The British are very well known for their witty –sometimes even black- humor. On the other hand, the Germans are very well known for the top quality products that they produce. So, how would you find the idea of a witty British journalist testing out a quality German product? Sounds interesting doesn't it?
That's exactly what Fifth Gear did when they took a Mercedes 300TE W124 wagon and put it through various ordeals, that include sinking it in the water, ramming it with a huge Bigfoot-style Monster truck and well, shooting at it!

What a load of tosh
silly english twats destroying a perfectly good car
Speechless. Tosh? Twats? Those words are WAY too kind.
My first thought - Someone, low on funds, has been deprived of driving a perfectly good, cheap, car, so that these idiots could carry out a completely senseless "test".
And the idiots are probably CONVINCED of how clever they are.
.. What about the environment - and the fumes from burning all that plastic in the car?
And another point scored to keep the UK way down the European league for recycling.
Had the car not already proven itself, anyway?
Oh here! What am I wasting my energy on these lunatics for?
OMG this is sick. Thats the kind of merc I have been looking for! Why why would you do such a demented thing. The car HAS a proven rep. This is a waste of a beautiful Mercedes 300 Estate. And with on 167,000 miles, that poor babe wasnt even broken in.
That wasn't a 300TE, the car they destroyed had a 4-cylinder engine, so it was either the 200 or the 230, NOT the 300.
Still a shame though.
why english people are so stupid? that was not 300TE, that was 200TE or 230TE. Try to use your mind sometimes !!!
Enough of the Bosh and criticism!
This was fun!
I've always wanted to try this set of tests.
Thumbs up for the tester, two thumbs up for the Car!
Now lets try it out on an old Dodge Dart!
When was that? If after Top Gear doing similar things to a Toyota Hilux, it smells like a badly decomposed copycat.
I used to have a W124 Mercedes-Benz 260E until last October,she was 1992-made.
She was largely bullet-proof,but at last her air conditioner and wiper motor had become broken and needed immense cost as much as the brand-new Nissan March(Micra for export),so I traded it for a Lexus IS350.
But as for engine, her engine keeped similar condition as new until last days,as a proof that she recorded 161bhp as maximum output on the odometer of 140000km,one month before the last departure. Her quoted data were 166bhp(124kW) and 23.2kgm(228Nm),and her measured data were a little higher than those of 2000km!
Certainly she had been fragile mainly in electrical elements after 100000km,but she was still able to reach genuine 221km/h(137mph) easily, with its odometer 120000km,and considerable space left under accelerator! So her maximum speed was proven as 241km/h(150mph) on chassis dyno, tachometer well into red(from 6200rpm) and touching cut-off then. Above all,her manufacturer data was only 210km/h(131mph).
Her fuel consumption, too, roughly kept same, averaging 8.7km/l from new to 140000km.
As a conclusion, her mechanical precision is quite respectable, and brakes and steering are steadier than those of 2009-new Chevrolet Impala and Lincoln Town Car,I'm confident of.
Though some difficulties existed, she was a masterpiece in all Mercedes-Benz history.
I hope she will serve as a reliable transportation outside Japan(my country) now,as carrying some new riches in Baghdad,Iraq. I want to meet her again somewhere!
