French automaker Peugeot strengthens it's 607 line with the introduction of a new Euro 4 spec, 2.2 litre twin turbo-charged HDi diesel engine that produces 170 Hp at 4000 rpm and a maximum torque of 375 Nm -277 lb ft at only 1,500 rpm. Even more impressive though is the 607's extra urban consumption: 54.3 mpg (According to Peugeot, the use of sequential twin parallel turbochargers is a world first on a 4cylinder diesel car. The system (patented with Honeywell Turbo Technology) consists of two identical, small-diameter turbochargers.
At low engine speeds, a single turbocharger ensures engine responsiveness. It is then supported by a second turbocharger, which starts to operate in parallel between 2600 and 3200 rpm according to the applied load and atmospheric conditions. The entire range of engine speeds is therefore covered. The system is controlled entirely by the engine's electronic control unit (ECU). In addition, the low inertia and small size of the turbochargers reduce response time and improve throttle response.

Someone has messed up the math. The smaller US gallon will yield a lower mpg figure than the larger imperial gallon. - about 20% less. Neverthesless, this is a helluva an engine and I look forward to its arrival in North America. It goes to show that the Europeans are about a decade ahead of us in terms of engine technology.
