2011 Ford Mustang 4door-Coupe

Now this could be one hell of a smart move for Ford: a 4door-coupe Mustang, or in other words, a “poor-mans” Mercedes CLS. That’s if Autoweek’s & Autocar’s (it’s on both sites) photochop is really based on inside information and they’re not pulling our leg. The chop itself looks mighty sexy combining all your typical “Mustang” elements in a dynamic 4door sedan.

As both magazines say, Ford has plans to add the 4door-coupe version shown here along with an estate, to the 6th generation Mustang line-up which goes on sale in 2011. The thought behind this move is that Ford desperately needs a model to shake up its sales and boost the its brand name, just like the first gen M3 did to BMW. Sources state that Ford will base all version of the next Mustang on a new rear wheel drive platform with a multilink rear suspension that’s being developed for the Australian arm of Ford.

Mmmm, doesn’t that sound familiar? Of course it does, as that’s what’s going around with GM and the forthcoming Camaro which will be based on the new Holden Commodore platform. The latter is said to come in the US wearing Pontiac badges. Via: Autoweek & Autocar

PS: Sorry for taking down the rendering but Autoweek kindly requested us to remove it

Update: Ford officially denies any plans for a 4door-Coupe version of the Mustang

Just say NO! This is your brain on drugs if you think it's a good idea to have a 4 door Mustang or station wagon Mustang. Seriously, JUST SAY NO!

Look, if Ford absolutely must build a 4 door and Estate, do NOT call it a Mustang, rather call it a Falcon. Look back at history, Mustangs shared platforms with Falcons, and falcons had 4-doors and estates, NOT Mustangs.

I'm with you. The Falcon nameplate -which by the way is still used in Australia and that's the model that the next Mustang will be based on, would be the right way to go if consumers had an automotive culture and sense of a model's history. But as you understand that's not the case in the world we live in.

Plus, if Ford wants to go global with a 4door-coupe, the wise choice is the Mustang nameplate which is known everywhere. Who knows "Falcon" in Europe for example, or for that matter, how strong is the Falcon nameplate in the US now?

I'm not saying that its going to sell cause it will be called "Mustang", but you have to admit that it's a start to draw a lot of attention to it.

Do not give a mustang 4 doors! its just that simple! I would not buy a mustang with 4 doors. I dont even think it should be called a mustang if you do that.
