2008 Subaru Impreza WRX Receives Mediocre Reviews

|

Widely accused for its sober looks, the 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX is nevertheless a WRX deep down under that boring outfit. Or isn’t it? The guys at Edmund’s don’t think so describing the latest WRX as slower, softer, pricier and worst of all (in our opinion), more family orientated than its predecessor. Overall, while they think the new Impreza WRX features a unique combination of utility and speed, they feel as though it lacks an attitude which was ever present in the previous WRX.

So, after 14 years of developing a following and sending a car down a particular marketplace path/position, why did subaru suddenly stop that, throw the efforts in reverse, and disregard 14 years of work it took creating this following. This generation WRX should have been slightly more hard edged, slightly more power and slightly more of a corner cutter. This is marketing suicide meltdown. A disaster. You could put all the tack-on pieces you want, but this body shape doesnt lend it's self to anything. And anything tacked on will only lessen the appeal. Oh subaru, how could you do it? I feel like my life-long best friend just deserted me.

You just gotta wonder what the hell were they thinking. This thing is fugly.

They changed because they had mined just about as much as they were going to get of that particular niche market. In order to grow marketshare the product's appeal has to be broadened. Do the risk turning off their core customer? Of course, but staying where they were in such a small niche would be hard to defend corporately.
I test drove one of these on the weekend and I was frankly blown away. It is much smoother than I thought. Yes, that may not appeal to a "boy racer" but it certainly made me sit up and take notice.

I'm very happy with the new design. I just bought the new WRX because of the new look. I just didn't like the old look. It's more mainstream now and it will attract more buyers.

I just bought one myself. First Subaru I have ever owned. I love it. Gas mileage could be a little better, but I wouldn't change th engine, ride or handling for anything.
