We’ve been hearing about a luxury rear-wheel drive sedan from Hyundai aiming at the US market for a long time now, and to be precise, from the Equus HCD-7 Concept first shown at the 2002 Chicago Auto Show. During that period several heavily camouflaged prototypes popped-up here and there, but that was it. Till now that is since we’ve got the first official renderings of the near-to-production concept version that’ll appear at the New York Auto Show (April 6th-15th). -Continued: Click “Read More…” below to see the rest of the post plus one more image

Dubbed Genesis, Hyundai’s full size-luxury sedan concept seems to have lost any ties it might have had with the 2002 HCD-7, and instead it looks like a rebaged Toyota Camry… There’s no official information out on the streets yet, but i suspect that we won’t have to wait long so stay tuned. Even though I’m more of a radio-guy in the car, I assume that all you music lovers will really dig Alpine’s new car-audio system that allows you to directly connect an iPod to it via a direct high-speed USB connection. According to Alpine, the all-new iDA-X001 is the first aftermarket head unit designed for a fully integrated iPod. As you can see from the pic, the iDA-X001 includes a color 320 x 240 pixel TFT screen that displays artist, album and track information, and album art from the iPod. -Continued: Click “Read More…” below to see the official press release

ALPINE ELECTRONICS REDEFINES IN-DASH AUDIO WITH FULL IPOD INTEGRATION HEAD UNIT

March 12, 2007 – As more and more consumers shift their preferences from CDs to digital tracks, the demand for automotive products to meet those needs is on the rise. Alpine Electronics, the industry-leading manufacturer of mobile media solutions, today introduced a radical solution to meet this demand: the iDA-X001. The iDA-X001 is the first aftermarket head unit designed for a fully integrated iPod experience in the car. The iDA-X001 has one built-in audio source, an AM/FM tuner, and no CD/DVD slot. Instead, it has a dedicated USB input to directly connect an iPod, resulting in the highest possible iPod sound quality and most iPod-like experience in the car.

As a "Made for iPod" program member, Alpine designed the iDA-X001 to allow users to naturally and quickly navigate through all of the digital content on their iPod via the head unit. Winning the 2007 CES Innovations Award in the Mobile Audio category in America helped validate the relationship between these two products.

“The iDA-X001 is all about redefining what goes into people’s dashboards,” said Graham Johnson, Sales & Marketing Director, Alpine Electronics of UK Ltd. "The iPod has become the most popular digital music player in the world and Alpine is dedicated to making the best sounding, most intuitive in-vehicle iPod experience.”

The head unit includes a colour 320 x 240 pixel TFT screen that displays artist, album and track information, and even album art from the iPod. The unit also features three screen-view options: album art plus song name and track information; larger album art display and song name only; or clock and calendar information.

Fifth-generation iPods with the latest firmware link directly to the iDA-X001 via a direct high-speed USB connection. Unlike previous solutions, which relied on an analogue interface cable or adapter box, the iDA-X001’s pure digital USB connection provides fast data transfer, quick command response and superior iPod sound. It provides full digital audio using a 24-bit Burr Brown DAC and has a built-in 50 Watt x 4 amplifier and 3 pre-outs. Alpine’s USB iPod connection is approximately 4 times faster than Alpine’s Full Speed™ Connection for iPod cable.

For earlier-generation iPods, the iDA-X001 also retains Alpine’s Full Speed for iPod Connection capabilities through the KCE-422i (sold separately, £19.99 RRP). The Full Speed cable gives access to expanded iPod search options: playlist, artist, album, song, genre, podcasts and composers (except video playlists and audiobooks). The iDA-X001 can support both a USB iPod and another iPod connected via the Full Speed cable at the same time for maximum access to consumers’ music libraries.

The iDA-X001 was built with the first fully digital iPod connection, creating the highest fidelity iPod experience in the car. The iDA-X001 has sound-tuning features such as bass and treble with centre frequency and Q adjustability, and three pairs of RCAs for system expandability. When playing music from fifth-generation iPods, the iDA-X001 has a signal-to-noise ratio that rivals CD-quality.

The iDA-X001’s self-return dial is designed to quickly search through multiple files. Its unique design allows it to access files by varying speeds, depending on the position of the dial. The centred jog dial scrolls through files and incorporates Alpine’s Quick Search™ feature, searching by playlist, artist, album, song, genre, podcast, audio book or composer. The dial turns 35 degrees to the left or right, to set the volume or browse in the Quick Search mode. When the dial is moved 11-34 degrees, it moves one line forward or backward on the search list. When turned to the 35th degree, the search speed increases for faster scrolling.

Pressing and holding the Quick Search button activates the Alphabet Search mode to scroll the list alphabetically at the rate of one second per letter. A simple “Back” button on the faceplate allows users to go back one step, no matter what menu is being used, so they can easily return to a search even while a song is playing. The jog dial and button portion of the faceplate can be removed for anti-theft purposes.

The iDA-X001 is built on Alpine’s proprietary Ai-NET BUS platform, which allows it to connect to a variety of digital media sources and formats, including DVD or CD MP3 Changers and USB-based MP3 players. The unit also is Bluetooth ready and the “phone” button allows access to the user’s address book, missed, dialled and received calls. The Bluetooth indicator shows when the Bluetooth module recognises the phone and is ready for operation (separate interface adapters and service subscriptions required).

The unit comes with the iPod dock/USB adapter and a 2-metre (maximum length) USB cable. The provided USB cable must be used to connect the iPod, as other alternative cables are not compatible. The supplied USB cable includes a locking mechanism that secures it to the back of the head unit for anti-theft purposes. When the iPod is connected and the car is running, the head unit also charges the iPod battery.

The iDA-X001 is available now from authorised Alpine dealers at a recommended retail price of £299.99 / 440 EUR.

Official: Cadillac BLS Wagon

Monday, March 12, 2007 | 0 comments » Categories | , | Bookmark and Share

As speculated, Cadillac added a Station Wagon version to its BLS portfolio. Due to go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2007, this is the first station wagon in Cadillac's 104-year-long history. Based on the Saab 9-3 Combi, the front wheel-drive only BLS Wagon will be offered with a 150Hp 1.9L four-cylinder common-rail diesel and three gasoline engines that include two 2.0L four-cylinder versions (129 kW / 175 hp and 154 kW / 210 hp) and a twin-scroll turbocharged 2.8L V6 (188 kW / 255 hp). -Continued

PRESS RELEASE: Cadillac Extends European Portfolio with BLS Wagon

Further commitment to grow Cadillac's presence in Europe

Expressive design combined with elegance and versatility

Three turbocharged gasoline engines and one direct-injection diesel engine

Sales expected to start in the fourth quarter of 2007

DETROIT - Cadillac reinforced its commitment to grow its brand in Europe by announcing it will add the BLS Wagon to its portfolio later this year.

''The Cadillac BLS Wagon is an appealing addition to the Cadillac portfolio for customers preferring dramatically designed luxury vehicles that offer versatility and performance along with outstanding ride and handling characteristics,'' said Cadillac General Manager Jim Taylor. ''This is the first Cadillac wagon in our 104-year history, and we think it will do well in many European markets where consumers desire a high degree of versatility and functionality in their performance luxury vehicles.''

Cadillac signature style

Clear, clean, crisp and sharply defined contours are Cadillac design signatures. An international team of designers, under the leadership of Ed Welburn, GM vice president of Global Design, created a BLS Wagon with a striking wedge shape that is emphasized by the tapered lines of the side windows.

''The whole team was very excited to apply Cadillac's design language to a wagon for the first time,'' said Welburn. ''The V-shaped chrome-plated grille, a Cadillac hallmark, is picked up again by the shape of the rear window, and the body side character lines make it unmistakably a Cadillac.''

The BLS Wagon also features jewel-like headlamps, fog lamps integrated into the body-colored bumper and a wide air intake below the grille. A narrow chrome strip runs along the side windows and the latest LED technology is used in the center high-mounted stop lamp, which is prominently positioned in the rear spoiler. Vertical taillamps, another Cadillac hallmark, play a prominent role in defining the elegant rear proportions of the BLS Wagon.

Luxurious, flexible interior and state-of-the-art infotainment systems

The BLS Wagon interior is highlighted by a three-spoke leather steering wheel and an analog clock in the center stack. The circular instruments have white numerals and red needles on a black background. Flexibility and versatility define the rear seats and cargo area, which are designed to support a wide variety of luxury and leisure interests.

State-of-the-art infotainment systems include high-quality audio units from American sound specialist Bose, among others; a DVD navigation system with touch-screen operation; a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone system with a hands-free kit; and remote controls on the steering wheel.

Turbocharged diesel and turbocharged gasoline engines

The front-wheel-drive BLS Wagon is offered with a turbo-diesel and three turbocharged gasoline engines. The 1.9L four-cylinder diesel engine, with common-rail direct-injection technology, is fitted with a maintenance-free particulate filter and delivers 110 kW (150 hp) of power. The range of gasoline engines includes two 2.0L four-cylinder versions (129 kW / 175 hp and 154 kW / 210 hp), and a high-tech, 2.8L V-6 (188 kW / 255 hp) that features a twin-scroll turbocharger and variable phasing of the intake camshafts.

The BLS Wagon offers six-speed manual transmissions and five- or six-speed automatic transmissions, depending on engine. For BLS models equipped with an automatic transmission, a standard Sport Mode button allows the driver to select a sportier transmission shift pattern.

Comfort and driving dynamics

The chassis, which features MacPherson struts in front and a four-link rear axle, is designed to provide the agility customers expect from a luxury wagon. The chassis tuning ensures dynamic handling performance without compromising comfort and load capacity.

Available in Europe in the fourth quarter of 2007

The Cadillac BLS Wagon will be in European Cadillac showrooms in the fourth quarter of 2007. ''The BLS sedan created a significant amount of showroom traffic at Cadillac dealerships across Europe,'' said Taylor. ''With the new BLS Wagon, we intend to build on this interest and appeal to customers who are looking for more flexibility to meet their individual lifestyles.''

I don’t know what the heck going around this man’s head when he decided to take a stroll with his Mitsubishi Outlander SUV in the Augusta Mall but he sure gave another meaning to the term... party crasher! Listen to what Lt. Tony Walden of the Richmond County Sheriff's Office had to say about the incident: "He drove through locked glass doors. Continued through the mall and made a left turn and proceeded toward where the new food court is. When he gets to the new food court, the vehicle turns right. The vehicle then drives through those glass doors and exits the mall".

Finito la musica? No cause once the man drove out the Mall, he resisted arrest from the Richmond County deputies. As you can see from the surveillance video he was quite pissed at the officers and at some point he actually attacked them! In the end though, thanks to a pint of pepper spray, the deputies managed to restrain the distraught driver and arrest him.

This kid might be 15 but he definitely knows his driving as he totally “pwned” the pursuing cop in the Chevy Camaro V8. However, despite the fact that no one was hurt in the end, you’ll agree with us that this was one hell of a stupid move on behalf of the 15year-old. He
risked not only his own life, but also the lives of the cops and more importantly, the lives of innocent and totally unaware by-passers who could have been seriously hurt for no reason at all.

The Gran Tourismo Coupe was met with enthusiasm from both journalists and consumers alike but despite the rumors, Opel hasn’t decided whether it’ll produce it or not. That makes Opel’s report on its Swiss adventures over the few past decades even more interesting since it not only refreshes our memories but it also offers us a chance to see what happened to their previous concepts. Undeniably, petroholics will find the sexy “Geneva” sports coupe as the most intriguing of them all. The “Geneva” actually started out with a rotary-engine but during the development process GM dropped its Wankel program before the concept was completed for the 1975 Geneva Show! -Continued: Click “Read More…” below to see the Concepts

Press Release: Advanced Opel Concept Cars in Geneva

1975 – Opel Geneve

In Geneva in 1975, Opel revealed a beautifully streamlined two-seater, the “Genève”. Engineered to take a Wankel-type rotary engine, its original name was “GT/W” (“W” forWankel). However, GM dropped its Wankel development program before the car was completed. Opel Design renamed it and exhibited its fiberglass mock-up as an eye-catcher at the show.

1982 – Opel Corsa Spider

The spectacular fiberglass “Corsa Spider” concept car was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1982. Cover plates were used to complete the transformation from a four-seater to a two-seater. In the same way, covering the front passenger seat gave the Spider the look of a single-seat race car. Much to the dismay of many fans, Opel did not put the “Corsa Spider” into production.

1992 – Opel Twin

Highlights of the Twin concept car included interchangeable drive units, with the engine, transmission, rear axle and energy accumulator housed inside. This allowed the vehicle to run on whichever drive assembly made the most environmental and economical sense. For highway driving for instance, there was a three-cylinder gasoline engine (0.8 liter, 34 hp) and for city or short distance driving, an electric unit with two wheel-hub motors (each with 14 hp). Arranging all the drive assemblies in the rear allowed for a variation to the usual seating layout. Instead of sitting front left, the driver had a central single-seat position, while three more passengers were able to sit in the back.

1995 – Opel Maxx

Instead of a conventional steel body, the Opel Maxx had a stable light alloy structure made of extruded aluminum profiles like a cage, which was visible from the outside. The form and dimensions of the profiles were variable, ensuring exceptional flexibility. The idea behind it was that instead of the two-door and two-seat basic version, Opel was also able to build a four-door extended version with four or even six seats.

1997 – Opel Signum Concept

The Signum was a concept for an elegant sedan with a long wheelbase and very spacious passenger compartment, featuring an interior arrangement with unprecedented flexibility in a car of this kind. The new idea became reality in 2003, when Opel launched a Signum that reflected the principle and innovation of the initial concept: maximum interior size and flexibility.

1999 – Opel Concept A

Distinguishing features of the “Concept A” microvan study were exceptional design, high levels of functionality and ultra-modern, environmentally compatible propulsion technology. Its striking look was just as impressive as its high variability, which allowed the compact five-door microvan to be transformed from a four-seater into a spacious load carrier. Raised seat positions made getting into and out of the vehicle easier and made traveling more relaxing. The smart Opel fun car was powered by a particularly low-emission “bivalent” engine and, at the touch of a button, ran on gasoline or compressed natural gas. The Concept A served as the forerunner to the Agila.

2002 – Opel Concept M

The “Concept M” was a sporty and environmentally-friendly concept van from Opel. With a height of 1.62 meters, the dynamically styled, compact body had plenty of space for four passengers. The 1.6-liter, 110 kW/150 hp natural gas turbo engine, combined with the automated “Easytronic” manual transmission familiar from the Corsa, formed a very promising drivetrain concept. The high-quality cabin was also ultra-modern and boasted great potential for a variety of innovative and flexible interior solutions. The Concept M became a great market success as the Meriva.

2003 – Opel GTC Geneve

With the GTC Genève, Opel unveiled a sporty three-door concept car that inspired many elements of the Astra GTC and showcased both high dynamics combined with comfortable seating for four people. The champagne-silver concept car featured a tinted, transparent roof that stretched from the windshield to the rear window, and the design team took the GTC's proportions (length/width/height: 4349/1773/1352 mm) to the extreme.

2004 – Opel Trixx

The Opel TRIXX was a true multi-talent. There was either room for up to three adults and one child, or plenty of load capacity as a one-seater. Three electrically powered pantograph doors enabled very easy access for passengers and luggage loading. Other ingenious ideas included an inflatable rear seat, a foldaway front passenger's seat and a rear pull-out luggage rack. This clever feature, which is today known as “Flex-Fix”, is now in series production and optionally available for the new Corsa and Antara.

Next time your satellite navigation system tells you to "turn left" make sure your not driving into, oh say, a railroad track. Unfortunately, a 52-year-old woman from Dorking, Surrey UK had one too many glitches on her sat-nav and ended up driving her Ford Fiesta onto a track blocking train services last January. Fortunately for her, UK authorities closed the case yesterday as they decided not to press charges saying that it was a bad, but honest mistake and that a prosecution was not in the public interest. Aiming straight at BMW's 335i Coupe the all-new Infiniti G37 Coupe gets curvy body lines and a more powerful 3.7-liter V6 engine delivering 330Hp & 270-lb-ft of torque. Along with the production version of the EX SUV Concept, the G37 will be one of the first Infiniti's to find its way to Europe starting from mid 2008.

ALL-NEW INFINITI G37 COUPE DEBUTS AT NEW YORK AUTO SHOW
SETS NEW STANDARDS FOR STYLE, PERFORMANCE AND LUXURY

– Highlights Include New 330 Horsepower* V6, Seductive Styling and Luxury Appointments –

The all-new 2008 Infiniti G37 Coupe, which makes its world debut at the 2007 New York International Auto Show, combines the exhilarating performance, stunning styling and modern, sporty interior of the original Infiniti G Coupe and accelerates each to new levels. Among the key enhancements to the new second-generation G Coupe are a larger, more powerful 3.7-litre V6 engine, available advanced 4-Wheel Active Steer system, a dramatic new exterior design and a refined interior with intuitive, integrated technology. The G37 Coupe joins the recently introduced, all-new 2007 Infiniti G35 Sedan in Infiniti showrooms nationwide in August.

“The new G35 Sedan, which has been named to both Car and Driver’s ‘10 Best Cars’ and Automobile magazine’s ‘All-Stars’ list, has set the stage for the introduction of the new G37 Coupe,” said Mark Igo, vice president and general manager, Infiniti Division. “The new Coupe builds on the styling, performance and interior enhancements of the G Sedan, adding the dynamic style, sporty atmosphere and expressive driving character expected of a class-leading luxury sport coupe. The line starts here.”

Exhilarating Performance From a New Engine Design

Leading the enhancements to the 2008 Infiniti G37 Coupe is the first-ever application of the new 3.7-litre V6 engine with VVEL (for Variable Valve Event and Lift).

Estimated at 330 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque, the new “VQ37VHR” contains approximately 35 percent new and unique parts from the new VQ35HR engine introduced in the 2007 G35 Sedan just last year. Both the Coupe’s VQ37VHR and the Sedan’s VQ35HR engines are based on the award-winning VQ engine series, named one of the “Ten Best Engines” by Ward’s Auto World magazine for 13 consecutive years.

Along with utilising a larger displacement than the previous 3.5-litre powerplant, the G37 Coupe’s new VVEL system combines hydraulic-controlled variable valve timing and electronically controlled variable valve lift on the intake side to help improve performance and response. The VVEL system is also expected to improve emissions and fuel efficiency. The VVEL intake camshafts, featuring continuously variable lift control teamed with the Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVTCS), allow for a 7,500 rpm redline.

The engine also features increased cylinder block height (from the previous 3.5-litre design), ladder frame construction for greater rigidity, large crank journal and pin diameters, asymmetric piston skirts, twin knock sensors, an electronically controlled “drive-by-wire” throttle system, molybdenum coated lightweight pistons, Iridium spark plugs and a symmetric twin air intake system.

A new, specially tuned dual exhaust system has been designed with equal length exhaust manifolds and low muffler exhaust backpressure to help improve engine breathing. Both intake and exhaust enhance driving pleasure with their authentic performance notes.

Rated at an estimated 330 horsepower, the new engine is not only considerably more powerful than the previous generation G Coupe (rated at 275 hp with 5AT, 293 hp with 6MT), but is expected to offer increased fuel mileage and reduced emissions levels. Overall vehicle fuel economy improvements are estimated to be nearly one mpg better than the G35 Sedan and nearly two mpg better than the previous generation G35 Coupe (actual EPA mileage estimates and emission information to be announced at a later date).

“The new 3.7-litre V6 is a true powerhouse – becoming more enjoyable as you drive it,” said Igo. “And, this powerplant also features Infiniti’s trademark “Swell” acceleration – introduced on the new G Sedan last year – with special tuning that builds horsepower almost continually to the redline like a building wave.”

The G37 Coupe engine is backed by a choice of an upgraded electronically controlled 5-speed automatic transmission with manual mode, downshift rev matching, DS mode and ASC (Adaptive Shift Control) that allows for quicker shifts in sporty driving situations and available genuine magnesium paddle shifters; or a newly revised, lightweight 6-speed manual transmission.

Performance Platform and Suspension

Developed at test circuits throughout Europe – including the famed Nürburgring – the G37 Coupe was conceived as a performance thoroughbred. Handling and ride performance increases come from the G37 Coupe’s enhanced FM (Front Mid-ship) platform, which has been stiffened 36% from the previous generation, is lower in overall height and has a wider front and rear track width.

The G37 Coupe’s 4-wheel independent suspension design features lightweight aluminium components and large front and rear stabiliser bars, increased spring rates and optimised suspension damping.

The front suspension is a double-wishbone design, with a single pivot lower wishbone and a long upper link. The multi-link rear suspension separates the shock absorbers and springs, locating the shock absorber inline with the wheel centre. These designs help minimise alignment changes and reduce suspension friction for nimble handling and smooth riding characteristics.

Steering is provided by a twin-orifice vehicle-speed-sensing design, which provides optimum steering effort at both high and low vehicle speeds. Standard on all G37 Coupes is Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), which assists in enhancing vehicle stability under a variety of driving conditions.

Also available on the new G37 Coupe is Infiniti’s exclusive 4-Wheel Active Steer system (4WAS), with unique chassis configuration that features automatically variable front steering ratios and rear suspension geometry that adjusts to steering input and vehicle speed via motor-driven controls. The system’s electronic control unit calculates the desired vehicle dynamics from a series of sensors, including vehicle speed and steering angle, and separately directs both the front and rear actuators to change steering gear ratios and rear geometry by moving both the front steering gear and rear suspension lower links – thus providing sports car-like agility and secure stability.

Braking performance is provided by standard 4-wheel vented discs with 4-channel, 4-sensor Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA). The standard G37 Coupe adopts the “sport” braking system of the recently introduced G35 Sedan. The G37 Coupe Journey with Sport Package and G37 Coupe Sport 6MT are further enhanced with aluminium four-piston callipers (front)/two-piston callipers (rear) embossed with Infiniti lettering and large ventilated rotors – 14.0-inch front and 13.8-inch rear.

Also available on G37 Coupe is Infiniti’s Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) with Preview Braking, which provides a precise following distance from the vehicle ahead. It also identifies sudden braking situations with laser sensors to determine distance and relative speed of the vehicle ahead in the same lane and “pre-pressurises” the Brake Assist system before the driver steps on the brake pedal.

A new 18-inch wheel and tyre package is standard on G37 Coupe, featuring a “split 5-spoke” 18x8-inch aluminium-alloy wheel design with P225/50VR18 all-season tyres. A new 10-spoke 19-inch wheel and tyre package, with lightweight cast aluminium wheels and high performance tyres, is also available. A Tyre Pressure Monitor System (TPMS) is standard on all 2008 G37 Coupes.

To enhance the already high level of dynamic performance, the G37 Coupe 6MT and G37 Coupe Journey with Sport Package come standard with unique sport suspension, a Viscous Limited Slip Differential (VLSD) and a new wheel and tyre package with 19x8.5-inch front wheels with 225/45WR19 front tyres and 19x9-inch rear wheels with 245/40WR19 rear tyres.

Seductive Styling

The G37 Coupe’s advanced performance systems are wrapped in an all-new seductive skin, giving the vehicle a kinetic feeling with emotional surface expression, sweeping character lines and tight panel gap lines.

“Compared with its predecessor, the G37 Coupe is longer, lower and wider – indicative of the power and technology of the vehicle,” said Igo.

Exterior highlights include flowing front fender curves, a wave-style hood, expressive front fascia with Infiniti’s signature double-arch grille and L-shaped High-Intensity Discharge (HID) bi-xenon headlights with integrated fog lamps. As with the new G35 Sedan, Infiniti developed a specialised production process for headlight installation to impart tight build tolerances and an exacting fit of the complex front fascia. The aluminium hood is secured by dual latches located at the two front corners to ensure an excellent fit.

The strong side character line and side sills integrate with the large wheel wells and the 18- or 19-inch performance-oriented wheel and tyre packages to transmit an added sense of power and vibrancy.

The rear of the G Coupe features broad rear fenders, flowing into the large LED taillights – an Infiniti trademark, refined rear bumper, integrated RearView Monitor camera (when equipped), rear underbody air diffusers and large dual exhaust outlets with chrome finishers.

An available rear spoiler gives the G37 Coupe zero rear lift, matching the standard zero-lift front aerodynamics.

The G37 Coupe Sport 6MT models and G37 Journey with Sport Package add an enhanced performance look, with a unique front fascia, special side sills and standard 19-inch aluminium-alloy wheels with high performance tyres.

Eight exterior colours, including two all-new colours, are offered.

Sophisticated, Luxurious Interior

The 2008 G37 Coupe interior design features sophisticated craftsmanship, with a cockpit-oriented front driver and passenger area, Infiniti signature “double wave” instrument panel design featuring the Infiniti-signature analogue clock and dramatic, full-length centre console with a leather and aluminium-clad shifter. Special aluminium-alloy interior trim, inspired by elegant, handmade Japanese Washi paper, is located across the instrument panel, on the centre console and on the door panels. Genuine African Rosewood trim is also available.

The instrument panel features Infiniti electroluminescent instrumentation with white-and-violet illumination and integrated multi-function information drive computer (average fuel consumption, real-time fuel economy, average speed, elapsed time, running distance, distance to empty, outside air temperature, warning displays, odometer and automatic transmission shift indicator) display.

Drivers grip a double hand-stitched leather-covered steering wheel, designed for maximum comfort and usability with wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls. Available genuine magnesium paddle shifters for the 5-speed automatic transmission fall readily to hand and add control (G37 Coupe Journey with Sport Package only).

The 8-way power driver and 4-way front passenger seats (8-way on G37 Coupe Journey, G37 Coupe Journey with Sport Package and G37 Coupe Sport 6MT model) are appointed with Infiniti’s exclusive premium leather and feature 2-way adjustable head restraints and a unique rear-seat access system, whereby the front seats will move forward automatically at the touch of a button to allow passengers into the rear seat.

The G37 Coupe Journey with Sport Package and G37 Coupe Sport 6MT add special 14-way sport-styled seats with thigh extensions and power adjustable torso and thigh bolsters for the driver, unique steering wheel stitching and high-grip aluminium pedals.

Technological and convenience features abound in the new G37 Coupe. Standard is the Infiniti Intelligent Key with push button ignition, Remote Keyless Entry system, a tilt/telescoping steering column with increased travel, illuminated glove compartment and automatic temperature control.

Also standard is a 6-speaker AM/FM/CD audio system with mp3 playback capability, Radio Data System (RDS) and centre console-mounted auxiliary input, as well as a 7-inch colour display.

Available is an 11-speaker Infiniti “Studio on Wheels” by Bose, combining a 3-way front door speaker array using 10-inch woofers with an audiophile-quality head unit incorporating double oversampling 24-bit 96KHz Burr Brow Digital Analogue Converters (DAC). Also available is a Bluetooth hands-free phone system, new touch screen Infiniti Navigation System with available X NavTraffic™ real-time traffic information (subscription required), voice activation for navigation, audio and HVAC functions, and a 9.3-gigabyte Music Box hard drive with compact flash drive slot.

Three interior colour combinations are offered – Wheat, Graphite and Stone.

Safety Performance and Technology

Available on the new G37 Coupe is an Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS), which automatically controls the headlight lighting pattern according to steering angle and vehicle speed to help provide better visibility at night.

Standard on all G37 Coupes is an Advanced Air Bag System (AABS) with dual-stage supplemental air bags with seat belt sensors and occupant classification sensor, front-seat side-impact supplemental air bags and roof-mounted side-impact curtain air bags for front- and rear-seat occupant head protection.

Also standard are 3-point ALR/ELR seat belts (driver’s side ELR only) and front seat belts with pretensioners and load limiters and adjustable upper anchors, driver and front-passenger knee bolsters, front seat Active Head Restraints and the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) system. Available as part of the Technology Package are brake-operated pre-crash seat belts with motion sensor on the brake pedal.

The G37 Coupe features Zone Body Construction with front and rear crushable zones to help disperse crash energy around the passenger compartment. For occupant safety, the engine is designed to move under the occupant compartment in a high-speed frontal collision, while a breakaway construction of the propeller shaft (connected with the engine-drop function) and the double-wall construction of the bulkhead helps to minimise cabin deformation, especially in the lower leg area. In addition, the brake pedal is designed to collapse to help reduce lower leg injuries in a severe crash.

Three Well-Equipped Models

The 2008 Infiniti G37 Coupe is available in three models: G37 Coupe, G37 Coupe Journey and G37 Coupe Sport 6MT. In addition to the long list of standard features on all three models, several options and packages are available.

These include the Premium Package, with a power sliding glass moonroof, 11-speaker Infiniti “Studio on Wheels” by Bose audio system with iPod connection, memory system (driver’s seat, steering wheel and outside mirrors) with synchronisation, power tilt and telescoping steering wheel, anti-glare rearview mirror with compass and HomeLink Universal Transceiver, Bluetoot hands-free phone system, and heated front seats and door mirrors.

When you open up the hood of your car, you want to be aesthetically proud of what’s hidden beneath. While this new engine cover from MAHLE that uses BASF’s Ultramid B3WG6 GP (a polyamide 6 reinforced with 30 percent glass fibres) for DaimlerChrysler’s V8 motors does well in terms of abstract art with its clean, futuristic looks, it doesn’t tell me anything whatsoever about the engine itself. Technologically advanced yes, but for all I know, this could be the all-new 2010 Batship. I guess I’m one of those people who are more than happy with the raw mechanical beauty of a shinny 4-barrel Holley popping its head out of a V8 engine bay. -Continued: Click “Read More…” below to see BASF’s press release

PRESS RELEASE: Almost a piece of art- Mahle’s shapely engine cover made of BASF polyamide with high bursting pressure resistance

A futuristic engine cover with an integrated air filter is the brainchild of developers at MAHLE Filtersysteme in Öhringen, Germany. MAHLE produces this large part with its attractive design for DaimlerChrysler’s V8 engines. The company uses BASF’s Ultramid B3WG6 GP, a polyamide 6 reinforced with 30 percent glass fibres. This material combines the aspects of a particularly high resistance to bursting pressure with very good dimensional stability, while its surface characteristics allow the creation of aesthetically pleasing products. You could say that Mansory is trying to justify the Phantom’s name with the black-mat finish of its Conquistador project, but then again we’re talking about a 3.2 tonne, 5.83 m long tank on wheels so obviously that’s not the case here. If I had to choose, I’d say that the Conquistador was born to star in hip-hop video-clips; I can just imagine it filled with a bunch of “bootylicious” chicks dressed in mat-black mini shorts or even better yet, not dressed at all! Know what I'm saying... -Continued: Click “Read More…” below to see the rest of the article plus more images

I guess all of you who clicked here would like to know a thing or two on the Conquistador so let’s get straight to the point. From what we made from the German press release, the Conquistador has been painted with BASF Coatings' Glasurit brand mat-effect paints. The original black glossy finish was lightly sanded, then paint was applied, followed by a layer of clearcoat. After another round of sanding, a layer of clearcoat mat was added. The mirrors, the radiator grille, and the trim strips received a coat of silver mat instead of black mat.

And that’s no all since the Conquistador also features a “light” bodykit consisting of a front spoiler with LED daytime running lights, side skirts with implemented aluminum flanks, a trunk lid spoiler and a new set of humongous, 24’’ black rims. In the interior Mansory applied a huge doses of carbonfibre trim as well as ambiance-light-effects and chequered quilted seats.

Finally, Mansory decided to give the 6,8-litre V12 a little more power by intervening with the electronics. That resulted to an output of 499Hp and a maximum torque figure of 780Nm of torque (up from 460Hp & 720Nm respectively).

WARNING: Keep this fool away from your M5. There are a lot of ways to love your car, but this guy has taken it literally. British mechanic Chris Donald has what many refer to as “auto-eroticism”. In a nutshell, he humps cars. He’s even made a web-site dedicated to the many auto-erotics out there where he tapes himself doing it with a car.

This guy says “It’s all about imagination and creativity. There’s more to car love than exhaust pipes. Stroking the body panels and delicate touching makes excellent foreplay.” We say, "GET A GIRLFRIEND". But apparently, the young lad is a very happy and normal (cringe) relationship.Posted by Dani Via: Jalopnik

GENEVA: Lada-C Concept

Friday, March 09, 2007 | 6 comments » Categories | , | Bookmark and Share

One of my beloved and obviously useless hobbies is to try to find similarities or inspirations between various concepts and models of different makes. With the Lada-C Concept I didn’t even had to try; to me, the folks over at Lada took a VW Iroc, threw in the rear part of a Fiat Stilo along with a shot of Russian idiosyncrasy and presto: Lada’s proposition for a sporty looking compact hatch! Don’t believe us? Check out the images after the jump and see for yourself. -Continued: Click “Read More…” below to see the official press release & more high-res pics

PRESS RELEASE

It is quite possible that in the nearest future LADA cars will look exactly like that – impetuous and aggressive. The letter “C” at the name of a vehicle, developed by young Russian designers, symbolizes three concepts at once: C-class, Concept, Coupe.

LADA-C is conceptual design on the basis of the new platform, which is developing in cooperation with Magna International Inc. and will become the base for the whole range of new LADA models. This class-C family will include sedan, hatchback, universal, compact van and cross-over with engines 1.6 – 2.0l. In September 2006 at Moscow International motor-show for the first time LADA presented the new family sedan, its name was Concept C, and today in Geneva there is a debut of 3-doors hatchback with a typically sports character.

Concept-car design illustrates the process of searching for the new style of future Lada vehicles and now we know that this design will comply with the latest requirements. The new LADA family from the very first stage realizes fundamentally new level of basic consumer characteristics – safety, reliability, comfort. In particular, form the very first stage the vehicle is developing with the purpose to obtain the maximum number of points for safety, not only for driver and passengers but also for the pedestrian safety. The results of tests, carried out according to a procedure similar to EuroNCAP, show that prototypes comply not only with the existing but also with prospective requirements for passive safety.

Well, not much of a concept since Skoda has announced that it’ll offer a white-painted roof for the new Fabia (photos below). Only difference is that this one draws its uniqueness due to the silver painted roof & mirror covers and the pearl-black body color. So, I guess at the Frankfurt show we’ll see a Fabia concept with a white colored roof "dressed" with the British err, sorry I mean the Czech flag? -Continued: Click “Read More…” below to see the press release and more photos

PRESS RELEASE

A Fabia concept car will present the design of the new model in an attractive elegant combination of colours in Geneva. In particular, the contrast between the black body with a pearl effect and the silver-painted roof is most impressive. Looking also very attractive indeed, a white-painted roof will be available for the new mass-produced Fabia.

Wrapping-up our reports on the 2007 Geneva Show we’ve got the first official pictures on TechaArt’s insane GTstreet. Unlike the other “clockwork orange” show car, Lumma Design’s CLR 500 RS, the GTstreet lived up to our expectations in terms of design though personally, I think a “Polar White” colour would be have been a better choice.

Featuring a supped-up version of the 997 911 Turbo’s 3.6-litre boxer engine that develops 630 hp / 463 kW at 6,800 rpm and 820 Nm at 4,500 rpm (up from 480 hp / 353 kW & 620 Nm), the GTstreet accelerates from zero to 100 km/h (62mph) in 3.2 seconds and to 200 km/h (124mph) after just 10.9 seconds while it has a maximum speed of 345 km/h – 215mph. Insane? Definitely but so is its price: 245,000 EUR or 321.600 USD… Via: Autoblog.it & TechArt -Continued: Click “Read More…” below to see the press release & a high-res image gallery

PRESS RELEASE

The Next Generation: TechArt GTstreet Based on Porsche 911 Turbo

The TechArt TA 097/T3 engine conversion comprises two special VTG turbochargers, a new air box with sport air filter, high-performance manifolds, intercoolers and a stainless-steel sport exhaust system with high-performance catalysts. The precise optimal interaction of all modifications is ensured by a newly programmed engine management system.

Power is transferred to all four wheels via a modified transmission with TechArt gear-throw shortening. Thus equipped the TechArt GTstreet delivers performance that firmly places it among the world’s fastest sports cars: 0 – 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds, 200 km/h after just 10.9 seconds and a top speed of 345 km/h speak volumes.

The body kit for the TechArt GTstreet was created in the wind tunnel, and offers an optimal symbiosis of aerodynamic downforce, minimized drag and striking design. The front fascia of the GTstreet with retractable carbon-fiber splitter produces downforce on the front axle and provides radiator, oil coolers and brakes with more cooling air, thanks to its large, striking air inlets. The auxiliary headlamp units with daytime running lights and fog lamps improve active safety. They also give the car even more passing clout.

The TechArt GTstreet fender flares on the front axle add 10 mm to the two-door’s width and give it an even more dynamic appearance. But that’s not all: The air outlets behind the front wheel houses optimize brake venting. The larger air ducts in the rear sidewalls provide engine and intercoolers with a larger supply of cooling air. For an optimal transition between front and rear fenders the TechArt designers have developed rocker panels that complement the new contours. TechArt mirror and headlamp moldings provide the finishing touches.

The TechArt roof spoiler extends the roofline and optimizes airflow to the adjustable rear airfoil of the GTstreet. The TechArt GTstreet rear fascia with integrated carbon-fiber diffuser contributes to the strong downforce generated on the rear axle. It also provides the perfect backdrop for the quad exhaust of the TechArt high-performance exhaust system.

TechArt Automobildesign offers a number of versions of its popular Formula wheel in sizes 8.5Jx20 in front and 12Jx20 on the rear axle. GTstreet buyers can choose from several color combinations and between the one-piece Formula and the multi-piece Formula II designs. The Formula II wheel features an exchangeable wheel lip. For optimal tires TechArt chose ContiSportContact 3 high-performance tires in sizes 245/30 ZR 20 and 325/25 ZR 20.

The large 20-inch wheels also provide the necessary space for the especially powerful and durable TechArt high-performance brake system. It features six-piston aluminum fixed calipers and 390-millimeter discs on the front axle. The rear axle is fitted with 365-millimeter discs and four-piston fixed calipers.

The TechArt GTstreet comes with a TechArt VarioPlus coil-over suspension that is based on the electronically adjustable PASM damping system of the 911 Turbo. This chassis allows individual ride-height lowering by up to 25 millimeters and push-button selection of two different damper settings, “Normal” or “Sport.” However, the dampers are not limited to these presets. Sporty driving automatically results in firmer damper settings in both modes, thus combining excellent ride comfort during normal driving with agile and responsive handling during fast cornering.

The cockpit of the TechArt GTstreet also differs distinctly from the stock 911 Turbo. Among the differences is an exclusive leather interior with color-contrasted stitching and sporty CarboBlack highlights. The coupe is further equipped with an ergonomically shaped TechArt sport steering wheel, aluminum foot pedals, foot rest and shifter, as well as with illuminated door sills sporting the TechArt logo.

Pedestrian Safety

The issue of pedestrian safety is a growing one. In the EU, one-fifth of all traffic fatalities – 7,000 people per year – are pedestrians hit by a vehicle. In densely populated Korea, the rate is as high as 39 percent. QarmaQ's Elastic Front™ safety system, which encompasses the whole front end of the vehicle, is arguably the world's first global pedestrian protection solution on a CUV. Three energy-absorbing structures are fully integrated underneath the futuristic styling of QarmaQ and this system takes advantage of several advanced materials that offer inherent energy absorbing properties. The QarmaQ's body panels have been designed to work in concert with energy-absorbing systems on the underside of these panels to manage and dissipate the force of a pedestrian/CUV collision. The Elastic Front™ has been engineered to meet EEVC WG17 Phase2, Euro NCAP, and JNCA pedestrian impact requirements and is currently undergoing testing for final validation.

A totally relevant concept

The Hyundai QarmaQ concept car is the result of the fusion of exceptional expertise and engineering foresight from Hyundai and GE Plastics. More than a design concept, QarmaQ illustrates that environmentally responsible solutions can be elegantly incorporated to enhance safety, design and performance.

"GE Plastics is committed to developing greener, lighter and aesthetically pleasing solutions to support our customers in creating vehicles with reduced environmental impact," said Gregory A. Adams, vice president and general manager, GE Plastics – Automotive. "We are delighted to have collaborated with Hyundai and we believe that working together we helped them develop an exciting new CUV that demonstrates greater environmental responsibility as well as improved safety, dramatic design, and high performance."

Firmly positioned as a crossover Coupe/CUV, the QarmaQ derives its name from traditional Inuit dwellings, constructed from earth, whalebone and animal skins. Like them, QarmaQ challenges conventional ideas on construction methods and materials. Also in common with the original structures, it boasts unusual strength, resilience and protection.

By combining leading edge design, advanced engineering techniques and the benefits of GE materials technology, QarmaQ demonstrates the ability to meet necessary, but problematic areas of legislation dealing with pedestrian safety and eco-responsibility.

The choice of a crossover coupe/CUV format for QarmaQ underlines the commitment of Hyundai to design innovation in this market sector. With Santa Fe, Tucson, and Veracruz, Hyundai created pioneering vehicles.

This 2+2 vehicle targets the important empty next baby boomers demographic, who are rediscovering a new-found freedom while remaining the wealthiest demographic in history. Today, this key group of consumers is beginning to spend their nest egg and enjoy the fruits of their labour, not on material possessions, but on experiences. The QarmaQ soulfully blends the driving experience of a Coupe with the ability to manage multi-terrain driving of a CUV, providing empty nesters with effortless access to their outdoor playground.

Design: Freedom of shape

As a joint project with GE Plastics, QarmaQ endowed designers with greater expressive freedom to create complex three-dimensional shapes that could not have been achieved with conventional production methods and materials such as metal and glass.

"The powerful profile and stance of the design incorporates dynamic, sculptural qualities and elegant sportiness on one hand, with smooth refined surfaces on the other," said Thomas Bürkle, chief designer, Hyundai Motor Europe. "Moreover, the various properties of the GE materials allowed more freedom in meeting or even exceeding safety requirements. The result is a uniquely balanced and harmonic design both inside and out," he added.

Departing from conventional car design that combines a lower body and a glass cabin on top, QarmaQ blazes a new trail with panoramic wrap-around glazing area using GE’s Lexan™ polycarbonate resin. This part sits between the two pronounced “muscles” above the front and rear wheels. The C-shaped side window enables innovative helicopter-like downward visibility and is a key design feature demonstrating the new glazing technology.

Exterior: Fluidity of line

Connected by unique glazed surfaces, the exterior design relates strongly to, and interacts effortlessly with the interior. The unique division between the solid bodywork and transparent glazed areas creates a new perspective, whether viewed from inside or from the pedestrian standpoint.

The exterior contours and fluidity of line have been refined to give an immediate impression of movement frozen in motion. This aesthetic is mirrored in the interior, so that the fusion and merging of the perceptual boundaries between inside and out delivers a feeling of integration and synchronization to the overall appearance.

Although QarmaQ does not have a high waistline or small window area (conventional methods to convey a feeling of protection), the exterior design still communicates a commanding presence and a feeling of protection to the occupants.

”The QarmaQ’s exterior design communicates a commanding presence and a feeling of protection to the occupants,” said Robert Butterfield, global market director, GE Plastics. “ The twin domes on the sunroof, facilitated by the new glazing technology, increases the inner space for the rear passengers and creates a unique design feature.” The wrap-around windscreen, in combination with the elongated bonnet delivers dramatic, almost classic, proportions and gives the car a unique sporty feeling. Finally, the contrast of the strong dark coloured areas to the lighter tonal areas emphasizes QarmaQ’s off-road DNA.

Interior

In response to shrinking family sizes and emergent customer preferences, QarmaQ is specifically designed to carry four people in above average comfort. The extensive use of new materials and techniques has resulted in a more fluid, more unified interior, by allowing seamless integration of otherwise intrusive elements.

As the sporting exterior proportions suggest, QarmaQ is primarily a driver’s car. Within its unique interior architecture the cockpit is isolated in an active, yet protective pod structure. This helps promote a sensorial and highly self-indulgent driving experience.

One of the main aims of the interior design was to develop a practical and interactive space, which wraps around the occupants. The driver-oriented cockpit, which combines functionality with organic sculpted shapes, creates an attractive, fun-to-drive atmosphere. This is further underlined by:

Inclusion of smooth surfaces embedded with discrete or hidden touch activated sensors

“Floating” elements pulsating and glowing with tinted ambient lighting

The interior is brought alive by a variety of technologies, effects and surfaces, including:

Thoughtful ambient LED lighting by Lumination, LLC glows through ceramic components

Silicone applied next to leather, to give a pleasing tactile and visual experience

The colour harmony of the interior has been designed to enhance the feeling of serenity and spaciousness, which in turn relates directly to the high level of comfort enjoyed by the passengers. The mixed effects, textures and colours add sophistication to the dynamic forms and strong presence of the car. Functional elements made from aluminium emphasise the more technical aspects, contrasting with and highlighting the softness of the interior materials.

New materials, new directions in comfort and safety

Current composite technology is usually thought too expensive and too difficult to fabricate to be of use anywhere but the aerospace and motor racing industries. The QarmaQ is physical proof that this need not be so.

The wrap-around GE Lexan™ windscreen and extensive use of GE polycarbonate glazing materials provides a weight saving of up to 50 percent in relation to glass, while simultaneously allowing more adventurous shapes than flat glass. The glazing features a unique technology from Exatec™ which deposits a thin protective layer of glass on the Lexan™ to add protection from scratching and the effects of weathering.

The QarmaQ also introduces new curved and moving side glazing in Lexan. As well as allowing such advanced applications, the impact resistance and other properties of this material also helps increase both occupant and pedestrian safety.

Exatec™ infrared coatings on the whole transparent areas reflect heat, helping cool the interior and reducing the power demands upon the infrared regulated air conditioning. Lighting is achieved by incorporating mood illumination into the actual material, delivering a unique interior ambience. The material also facilitates a perfectly flat, fully integrated fractal radio antenna within the roof structure.

Among other milestones in the construction of QarmaQ, the front wings were designed from the beginning to be one very large single injection moulded component. Together with the deformable bonnet and precise bumper mouldings, these also form a major addition to pedestrian impact safety. The sophistication of the material and manufacturing technique also played a major part in the ability to fully encapsulate the complex headlight shape into the whole frontal styling.

At the other end, the tailgate breaks new ground by bonding different materials, including the glazing and rear light assemblies, to create a one-piece component structure. This increases the integral strength, while at the same time simplifying vehicle assembly and reducing weight.

Another major safety advance is the use of sensors to detect vehicle presence in the blind spots of the rear view mirrors when pulling out or overtaking, and audio-visually alert the driver.

Euro5 diesel engine

The QarmaQ's 2-liter diesel engine is fully compliant with EURO5 emission regulations. It features the very latest technologies such as high pressure fuel injection and fine fuel spray atomization for higher torque and better power output. Regulated emissions such as CO, THC, NOx and PM, were reduced drastically while a Catalyzed Particulate Filter system, CPF, is capable of cleaning about 90 percent of the particulate matter from the diesel emissions. Furthermore, by switching the position of CPF from the under-floor area to a location more closely coupled to the exhaust manifold, it was possible to minimize the catalytic light-off time and to enhance the naturally regenerative characteristics of the CPF.

A greener future

Thanks to extensive use of advanced materials, QarmaQ is 60 kg lighter than a comparable vehicle made with traditional materials.

GreenOrder, an environmental strategy firm based in New York, N.Y. that audited QarmaQ estimated that the 60 kg. that have been taken out of the QarmaQ, means the vehicle would require about 80 fewer litres of diesel per year, and would cut annual greenhouse gas emissions by more than 200 kg. Furthermore, if every new vehicle registered in the European Union (EU-15) in 2006 had reduced fuel consumption by the same amount, the result would have been an annual savings of more than 7.4 million barrels of diesel fuel -- or enough to sustain the European Union (EU-15) diesel demand for three days.

As a result, the greenhouse gas savings would equal approximately 3.1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide. According to Joseph Malcoun, an Associate with GreenOrder, cutting edge material technologies are expected to make a major contribution to increasing the fuel economy of tomorrow’s passenger vehicles. “As consumer demand for more fuel efficient vehicles continues to grow, we expect the use of advanced materials to play an increasing role in reducing the greenhouse gas footprint of the cars we drive.”

HPPC composites for horizontal body panels significantly reduce part weight - up to 50 percent per part - while maintaining strength equal to that of steel. This lighter-weight cladding contributes to better fuel efficiency and improved power-to-weight ratio for drivers and its energy absorbing qualities are harnessed to create the Elastic Front™ safety system.

The QarmaQ's body panels use an environmental responsible plastic, Xenoy iQ™ and Valox iQ developed as part of GEs ecomagination™ initiative to address three critical environmental concerns: conserving energy, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, and up-cycling or re-using materials such as PET plastic bottles. The QarmaQ re -uses approximately 900 PET bottles that would otherwise become landfill.

Another environmentally progressive aspect of QarmaQ’s design is the use of GE paint replacement technologies, including Visualfx™ resins with Lexan™ films, to replace painting operations that can release toxic and greenhouse gases.

To eliminate dependency on PVC in the wiring, GE’s Noryl resin technology was used for wire and cable coating. Replacing PVC, these ultra-thin coatings can reduce cable weight by up to 25 percent.

Press Release: World Debut at the Geneva Motor Show 2007

BRABUS WIDESTAR Based on the Mercedes ML 63: An Exclusive Wide-Track Version with 23-Inch Wheels and 550 hp / 405 kW

Sporty and dynamic, exclusive and powerful: These three attributes best describe the BRABUS WIDESTAR. The special model based on the Mercedes ML 63 celebrates its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show 2007. With the WIDESTAR BRABUS presents not only a new and exciting wide-track version of the SUV but also the new Monoblock E 23-inch forged wheels and BRABUS B63 S performance tuning for the ML 63 with 550 hp / 404.8 kW.

The WIDESTAR concept, which is of course also available for all current M-Class models, combines dynamic looks with maximum functionality. The elegantly flowing lines of the fender flares front and back increase vehicle width by four centimeters. The extra centimeters benefit the car's appearance while the wider track improves handling: The multi-piece BRABUS Monoblock E wheels in size 11Jx23 were custom-tailored for the wide-track version of the M-Class. Their forged wheel center ensures an optimal symbiosis of light-weight design and maximum strength. The new light-alloy wheels are mounted with high-performance tires in size 315/25 R 23.

The BRABUS control module for the standard AIRMATIC air suspension lowers the ride height of the vehicle by some 30 millimeters, further contributing to more sporty road-handling characteristics.

The BRABUS WIDESTAR body conversion consists of add-on parts for the doors, and rocker panels that create a more homogenous transition between the fender flares. But that's not all: Complete front and rear fascias replace their production counterparts front and back. The front spoiler bumper with three striking air inlets and four integrated auxiliary headlights lends the M-Class more passing clout and minimizes lift on the front axle. In combination with the rear spoiler the rear fascia with integrated diffuser and cutouts for the four chrome tailpipes of the BRABUS stainless-steel sport exhaust system provides the perfect aerodynamic balance.

Its well balanced aerodynamic properties make the BRABUS WIDESTAR a perfectly suited to serve as the platform for a tuned version of the ML 63. The latter was developed by the BRABUS motor engineers in form of the B63 S performance kit. The production V8 engine delivers 510 hp / 375 kW. It is fitted with sport air filters and high-performance metal catalysts as well as newly programmed engine electronics with custom mapping for ignition and injection. Together these measures result in an increase in power output by 40 hp / 31 kW to 550 hp / 404.8 kW. Simultaneously peak torque grows from 630 Nm to 650 Nm.

Vehicle performance benefits accordingly: The sprint from rest to 100 km/h is shortened to 4.9 seconds. The engine tuning and installation of the BRABUS V/max unit increase the top speed from 250 km/h to 275 km/h.

To further optimize active safety the BRABUS WIDESTAR can be equipped with a high-performance brake system. It features 12-piston aluminum fixed calipers and vented and cross-drilled 380 x 36 millimeter discs on the front axle. Together with 355 x 28-mm brake discs and 6-piston fixed calipers in the rear it provides the impressive stopping power usually reserved for purebred sports cars.

Yet another BRABUS specialty for the Mercedes M-Class is the creation of exclusive interior options: Stainless-steel door sills with illuminated BRABUS logo, an ergonomically shaped sport steering wheel and leather-covered door trim pieces to upgrade the factory leather are all part of the program as are exclusive BRABUS fully leather interiors made from meticulously crafted combinations of the finest Mastik leather and Alcantara.

The production front seats are equipped with special rear consoles that reach all the way to the headrests. They house seven-inch 16:9 LCD screens with integrated DVD player. Also available is a version with an electric folding table made from precious wood.

And this time, it looks like it’s for real as according to a report from Daily Telegraph UK, the deal will be signed on Friday in Detroit. "It's a done deal. All that remains is to cross the t's and dot the i's," quoted an unnamed senior source to the newspaper. The buyer is a consortium of business interests from America and the Middle East, led by David Richards, head of the UK motor sport organisation Prodrive.

We remind you that Prodrive has been a long-term partner of the British sports car maker and it runs Aston Martin's racing team. As for the price, it is rumoured that the deal will close at around 500m BP (1bil USD or 750m EUR) meaning that Ford has cut its expectations to half of what it was asking for Aston Martin when it put the British company up for sale last year. Albeit less impressive than Lumma Design’s original sketches suggested, the CLR500 RS is without doubt one of those cars that will never pass unnoticed -blame the eye-popping orange exterior combined with Lumma Design’s optical package that includes 21’’ rims and a wider body (50mm on each side thanks to the supped-up wheel arches). Although I could live with the its extravagant exterior, I think that Lumma went overboard with the interior which looks like someone accidentally spilled vitamin C in it.-Continued: Click “Read More…” below to see more images and the press release

Talking about vitamin C, the German tuner also put a hand in the engine department. Besides optimizing the ECU, Lumma also installed a larger metallic racing catalytic converter and a racing exhaust system. These changes added another 53Hp to the M5’s stock 5.0-liter V10 which now delivers 560Hp. No word out yet on acceleration figures but Lumma announced that it has removed the Vmax limitation thus allowing the Bavarian "clockwork orange" to reach a top speed of 327km/h – 203 mph.

PRESS RELEASE

· V10 with 560 HP
· Racing exhaust system with racing catalytic converter
· Complete body-kit with impressive rear apron with integrated diffusor
· Motor optical package of carbonized parts and red cylinder cover
· Sport chassis and 40 mm lowering
· LUMMA-set of wheels in an impressive 21 inches
· sporty interior accessories in matching colours to exterior chassis
· TÜV / german tested parts regulation institution in accordance to MOT

March 2007 - The swabian tuner LUMMA DESIGN continues its series of refined premium vehicles through CLR 500 RS. This time the development was based on the current BMW M5. This high performance limousine receives a complete body-kit in spectacular optics, a new chassis, a racing exhaust system, numerous interior accessories as well as power enhancement providing even better performance. This car, which is refined using every trick in the tuning book, celebrates its premier during the Auto Salon in Geneva 2007 as Show Car at the stand of the Swiss tuning specialists Forcar Auto accessories.

BMW bases its M-Models on high-rev concept. The M5 is based on the same principle. Its 10-cylinder motor has the character of a racing engine. Considering the old racing saying “you can never have too much horsepower”, soon may prove true within the stock power of 507 HP to being insufficient for various drivers. Question: How to get that extra kick? Answer: Drive to LUMMA DESIGN and order the performance enhancement 560 HP! A complete electronical optimization of the ECU is manditory. Larger metallic racing catalytic converters and a racing exhaust system extract more horse power from the V10 engine. The removal of the Vmax-limitation insures that the Bavarian Express races a solid 327 km/h.

LUMMA DESIGN also provides the CLR 500 RS with a classy motor optic package. It is complete with air collector and air filter casing made of carbon and as well a red cylinder head cover. A treat for the eyes!

Impressive Appearance through Body Extension

The body exterior of the CLR 500 RS makes one thing crystal clear; this is not just chicken feed; rather a very big deal. LUMMA DESIGN widens the car body from front to back 5cm on each side. The spectacular looking body-kit includes a new front spoiler bumper, wheel arch extensions and a rear apron. As an optical highlight, the rear apron features an impressive integrated racing-diffuser which is painted in racing typical black. It extends over the complete lower rear-end and embedded within is an impressively large tailpipe on each side. LUMMA DESIGN is well aware most motorists receive only this view in full. Causing quite a stir for the CLR 500 RS is the outstanding paint job in colour orange provided by LUMMA DESIGN.

For improvement of performance and weight, LUMMA DESIGN equips the CLR 500 RS with a lightweight trunk lid made of carbon-kevlar fibre with an embedded rear spoiler lip for improved downforce. Rarely does chrom match to such a sporty vehicle. Closer to what racing sport dreams are made of is the use of carbon fibre. That’s why LUMMA DESIGN covers all exterior chrom parts are with real carbon.

Mighty 21” Wheels

As for the theme wheels, LUMMA DESIGN cames up with its own special creation. The noble threepieced wheels are made of a combination between aluminium and stainless steel. They come in a highly-polished titanium finish with five spokes branching out in “Y” form to the rim. LUMMA DESIGN attaches great importance to true grandeur mounting its glamourous wheels in large 10x21” size equipped with Yokohama tyres 255/30-21 in front and 11,5x21”and 295/25-21 in back.

The reduction of centre of gravity of the vehicles goes along with agile driving performance. LUMMA DESIGN accomplishes this through the addition of H&R sport suspension lowering the CLR 500 RS by 40mm.

As mentioned above, the LUMMA DESIGN exhaust system is equipped with racing catalysators providing higher performance for the CLR 500 RS. It really gives one goose bumps with an awesome sound racing through two 115 mm thick exhaust pipes. Look out when it breaks loose!

LUMMA DESIGN supplies the interior with a sporty comfortable ambiance. The two-toned leather decor glistens in Lamborghini-orange. LUMMA DESIGN offers other matching extra interior parts in orange coloured carbon as well. The Winterlingen based tuner even matches the instruments to the outside vehicle. For this reason, even the tacho scale that LUMMA DESIGN extended to 360km/h, comes in orange. The LUMMA DESIGN self-designed steering wheel is ergonomically formed so that the driver can securely steer the CLR 500 RS and comes embroidered in carbon-leather combination. The final shine is found in the cockpit through both the gas pedal and foot rest comprised of anodized aluminium embossed with the LUMMA DESIGN logo.

Another motor show, another hybrid concept from Toyota. This one proposes a new design language for future Toyota hybrid models. If you scroll down and take a look at the official press release you’ll see that Toyota uses the word “J-Factor” to describe the Hybrid X’s design philosophy. “J-Factor” refers to the local and global acceptance of Japanese-inspired design and cultural form. Sound’s intellectual and sort of artistic doesn’t it? Then of course you take a look at the concept and you return to reality… -Continued: Click “Read More…” below to see the official press release & more pics

PRESS RELEASE: WORLD PREMIERE OF TOYOTA HYBRID X CONCEPT

New design language for future hybrid models
Four-door, four-seat open-space concept
Interactive interior design
A step closer to zero emissions

Toyota presents a world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show with the reveal of Hybrid X, a concept car that proposes a new design language for hybrid models, while also acting as an innovative technology showcase for future generation hybrid cars.

Hybrid X is a vision for future environmentally friendly motoring. It fits clearly within Toyota’s environmental strategy of offering sustainable mobility for modern families. Hybrid X further extends the use of Hybrid Synergy Drive which is becoming an enabler for vehicle concept innovation and allowing Toyota to push forward to new frontiers.

Hybrid X is designed as a four-door, four-seat open-space concept. It has the dimensions of a conventional family car with an overall length of 4,500mm and wheelbase of 2,800mm. The width is 1,850mm and height 1,440mm.

Hybrid X has been created and developed by Toyota’s European styling centre, ED², in the south of France. It proposes unconventional creative solutions that will themselves potentially become the signature points of a specific hybrid identity.

Hybrid X follows the core values of the Toyota brand design philosophy under two consistent themes: J-Factor and Vibrant Clarity. J-Factor refers to the local and global acceptance of Japanese-inspired design and cultural form, while Vibrant Clarity is the design language used to express the J-Factor. Through Vibrant Clarity, designers will infuse future vehicles with a completely original identity and emotional intensity that will be uniquely identifiable as coming from Toyota.

Interior designer, Laurent Bouzige, says: “Hybrid X is conceived as a multi-sensory experience. There is a formal style in the shape of the vehicle and the material used but every other reaction is linked to the passengers’ senses of sound, smell, sight and touch through interactive ambience.”

The strongest form element of the exterior shape is the two ‘U’ shapes created by the massive upper glass frame area and the unconventional A and C pillars. When viewed from above this gives the impression of a vast X – hence the name of the concept, Hybrid X.

The U-shaped pillars allow the general shape of Hybrid X to achieve a superior aerodynamic form, which is further enhanced by smooth surface lines and the integrated rear spoiler.

At the same time, the glass area greatly enhances visibility to create an ‘open-space’ concept which ‘frames the vision’ in all directions, including up.

Access and innovation are features of the rear-hinged passenger doors which open electronically at the touch of a button. Dynamic hints of driving performance are provided by the customised 20-inch alloy wheels with ultra-low profile 225/40 R20 tyres.

The smooth, aerodynamic lines of the front are unbroken by headlamps. Instead, these are integrated into the dashboard and are now part of the car’s interior. These LED lamps are ‘intelligent’ and display graphic forms through animation, adopting the interactive concept of Hybrid X to communicate safety information to pedestrians or other drivers, such as safety distances, acceleration and braking.

Across the rear the energy-efficient LED lights form another U shape, reflecting the design signature of vehicle as a whole.

The driver can set the ambience within the car via an interface controlling the four senses of sight, sound, touch and smell. LED lighting systems within the car provide a variety of illumination and change in harmony with different musical backgrounds. A perfume diffuser fills the air with a gentle, relaxing aroma, while the use of many different materials and textures on the interior surfaces provides variety to the touch.

The drive-by-wire steering pad features a central screen that relays vital information to the driver about the energy flow path, fuel consumption and gear position. Interactive navigation and Bluetooth connectivity are provided by a second screen in front of the driver.

A third touch screen in the console controls the ambience settings, such as the entertainment and audio systems, lighting operation and air conditioning. A sensitive touch control on the steering pad allows the driver to switch the information displayed on the screens.

The space saving seats are formed using injected foam techniques, which make them comfortable and reduce weight. In order to further promote human interaction, the two independent rear seats can be swivelled by 12 degrees to let passengers enjoy the scenery or a more intimate tête-à-tête.

For now, it is clear Hybrid X is an innovative vehicle that conceives how Hybrid Synergy Drive technology can deliver economical, cleaner and more comfortable motoring. It is a step closer to Toyota’s vision of the ultimate environmental driving technology and its design will influence the entire Toyota brand and its hybrid models in the future.

PRESS RELEASE: HONDA SMALL HYBRID SPORTS CONCEPT – A FUN–TO–DRIVE, HIGHLY EFFICIENT CONCEPT MODEL

Honda's interpretation of how a future hybrid model might appear is making its world premiere at Geneva. Honda Small Hybrid Sports Concept, a design study model, demonstrates a unique fusion of advanced environmental technology, exciting styling and fun-to-drive characteristics.

The Small Hybrid Sports Concept is conceived around a front-wheel drive, small car platform and is powered by a Honda IMA 4-cylinder petrol/electric hybrid system driving through a CVT transmission. It explores the idea that a car can have a low environmental impact yet still deliver all the driving enjoyment expected of a compact sports car.

The aerodynamically efficient and curvaceous two-door sports coupe is characterised by short front and rear overhangs, wheelarches that wrap tightly around large wheels, and curvaceous, subtly contoured surfaces contrasting with sharp 'folded' edges along the waistline and at each corner. An accentuated, arrow-like nose features a full width air intake with Civic family overtones. This sweeps forward into a distinct protruding centre section complete with 'H' logo.

The Concept model's fluid lines are created by a steeply raked windscreen which extends back above the occupants' heads where it meets a one piece glass roof. This in turn flows rearwards to give the car its fastback styling, terminating in a distinctive and futuristic 3D floating glass design – a concave element which forms an additional vertical window. At its base, further distinction is provided by a 'floating' LED tail light unit that stretches across the full width of the car. At its centre, the glass panel extends downwards and contains an illuminated 'Small Hybrid Sports' name plate.

The Hybrid Sports Concept is equipped with 165/60 section tyres mounted on 20-inch distinctive rims. Their dimension supports low rolling resistance without compromising sporty driving.

Compact external dimensions lend themselves to nimble, agile performance on the road and help to ensure a good power to weight ratio. 4000 mm in length, 1270 mm tall and 1760 mm wide, and the 2350 mm wheelbase, in conjunction with a sports suspension, delivers stable and predictable handling characteristics.

The body is particularly aerodynamically efficient and compact. Rear-facing digital cameras take the place of conventional door mirrors. The Small Hybrid Sports Concept has been developed as a design study model by the design studio at Honda R&D Europe based in Offenbach, Germany.

More of rebadged Cee’d than an autonomous model aiming at a different sub-category of compact car buyers, the i30 is another example of what NOT to expect when seeing eye-popping concepts… After the video follow the jump and click “Read More…” below to check out the official press release along with a high-res image-gallery.

PRESS RELEASE: Hyundai Introduces i30 at Geneva

All-New Entry into the European C-Segment

Styled in Europe by Europeans for Europeans

New naming system for European model lines bear i prefix

(March 6, Seoul, Korea) At the 2007 Geneva Auto Show today, Hyundai introduces a new car, the i30 and a new naming philosophy with model lines bearing the i prefix. The i stands for inspiration, a key force driving all vehicle development at Hyundai. But i also stands for intelligence and integrity, and that is what customers have come to expect from Hyundai. In all these forms i lies at the core of any Hyundai brand promise. From this premise the “i” badge is a natural development.

With the i30 Hyundai introduces a new model range firmly positioned in the mainstream C segment. Styled in the company's Russelsheim Design and Technical Center for those who want stylish practicality with a distinctive dash of sporting flair, the i30 is aimed at the discerning European who wants something different, but with proven integrity and quality. Initially available as a 5-door hatchback and an estate car, the i30 opens a new chapter for Hyundai in Europe.

Creative Flair – the exterior

Flowing curves, emphasised by strong character lines highlight the broad stance and long wheelbase of the i30. The clearly defined unbroken waistline unifies the classic proportions. The effect is conservative, yet exiting, giving a dynamic impression of performance and capability.

The pronounced dual intake frontal styling seems to mould effortlessly into the bonnet and A pillar lines. The upsweep of the rear window lines mirrors the lower character line. The harmonic effect creates a distinct and dynamic posture.

The sculpted rear appearance is achieved by a combination of qualified curves that extend the waistline and reflect the curvaceous front and side styling. Every element of the design works in harmony. The seemingly effortless interaction of front and rear light clusters, unobtrusive roof spoiler and superb front proportions, all contribute a powerful sense of proportion and purpose.

Dynamic refinement – the interior

The long wheelbase and generous width of the i30, combined with Hyundai’s acknowledged skill in interior space packaging have produced an interior fully focused upon class-leading comfort, functionality and practicality.

Dynamic refinement has been applied to every aspect, including air management, the light airy ambience, seating comfort and intuitive ergonomics.

The i30 was conceived from the beginning as a driver’s car. The clarity of the instruments, tilt and telescope steering wheel, supportive bucket seats and optimal gearshift positioning are all evidence of this. For extra clarity, LCD technology has been used for the central info display and the instrument panel mounted display and warning lights. Generous directional air vents ensure optimum interior air management. Two-tone interior trim, with metallic soft paint treatment, together with special attention to the upholstery fabrics and materials has produced a vitalising and fresh, highly “European” interior environment.

Blue instrument lighting

Hyundai has adopted LED based blue instrument and minor control lighting throughout their upper market ranges. The advantages are less eyestrain and fatigue under all ambient light conditions, helping to maintain peak driver alertness and vision.

For years now Hyundai have been proving that a car does not have to be large to feel spacious or carry a premium price to offer an intelligent interior. The i30 is just the latest expression of this. Intuitive ergonomics are evident in all of the minor controls. The positive feel of the steering wheel audio/communication switches and column stalks, together with the easy to hand positioning of heating, air conditioning and power windows and mirrors amply demonstrate this. The easy access to sunglasses holders, map pockets and other stowage and storage areas are another Hyundai strength that characterises the i30. Even the positioning and precise feel of the automatic gearshift has been further optimised. All contribute to the reality of a driver’s car.

Seating to inspire superlatives

A car that offers above average sporting appeal must also provide the supportive seating to enjoy it. The front seats and contoured rear seats of the i30 provide long distance comfort and support. Attention has been paid not only to the form, with orthopaedic design input, but also to the stitching and materials used. The result is seating comfort designed to meet and match the very best European ideals.

The ideal integrated interior

The i30’s dimensions at 4,245 mm long, 1,765 mm wide and 1,480 mm high, fit i30 totally to current C-segment expectations. In addition the long wheelbase of 2,650 mm offers superior inside spaciousness, which has received the full force of Hyundai intelligent interior design. The extra space allowed the designers to optimise every aspect it. The result is increased freedom of movement, optimal seat and instrument positioning and increased comfort. Both front and rear legroom and headroom are well above the accepted average.

Rear space with the capacity to convince

The i30 matches above average occupant space with generous, easy access luggage capacity. A useful and fully useable 820mm length 1020mm width and 558mm height in the luggage area gives an impressive 340litres load volume with the rear seats upright. With the rear seats folded flat the load space length and load volume are increased.

Also, as the i30 is a Hyundai, utility and convenience have not been overlooked. As well as the standard luggage cover, a restraining net is optional. Hyundai have always been recognised for their generosity of equipment at all trim levels, and the i30 builds upon that tradition. The range of standard equipment combined with a full selection of reasonable cost extras, allows i30 customers to fully tailor their car to their wishes.

Engines and transmissions

A choice of three petrol, combined with manual or automatic transmission and three diesel power options means the i30 can meet virtually every driving, or geographic powertrain preference. All petrol engines have 16v dohc CVVT and variable inlet technology. All diesel engines can be best described as state-of-the-art and are mated to a manual gearbox.

The i30 offers a wide range of engines. At the entry-level, Hyundai’s new 108PS 1.4l petrol engine offers a sparkling combination of fuel economy and performance with 13.5kg.m torque. A new1.6 engine gives 121PS and 15.4kg.m torque, while the range topping 2.0 offers 140hp with 18.8kg.m torque.

In terms of diesel a new 1.6 CRDi is available in 90PS and 115PS versions, both with 26kg.m torque. At the top end, the 2.0 CRDi puts out an exhilarating140PS with 31kg.m torque. All feature variable geometry turbo charging (VGT), low friction balance shaft technology and high-pressure common rail diesel injection for minimised engine originated NVH.

Transmitting the power

Regardless of advances in automatic technology, manual transmission remains the favourite for European drivers. The 5-speed all-synchro transmission of the i30 has been specifically engineered to match the sporting nature of the car with short throw and really precise shifts.

Suspension and braking match the performance

In any of the five available launch versions the Hyundai i30 offers a dynamic, yet cultivated driving experience. Fitted with MacPherson strut front suspensions and multi-link rear suspension has been adopted to perfectly complement the high design rigidity. Ventilated 10 inch discs front and solid 9 inch rear* with 4-channel ABS and optional ESP* mean the dynamic appearance is matched to real on-road handling control. As regards performance choice, a range of 15, 16 and 17inch alloy wheels, with low and ultra-low profile tyres add visual impact to the sporting dynamics. The result is a car that simply demands to be driven.

Uncompromising safety

Like every other Hyundai, the i30 was safe even before it reached prototype stage. Advanced design systems and sophisticated computer simulation, combined with intensive component testing meant that by the time the real tests

came only conceptual fine-tuning was required. That is typical of the Hyundai approach to safety. It begins on the drawing board, is thoroughly tested by prototype stage, and fulfils every expectation on the road.

Passive safety

The i30 is fully equipped to protect. In terms of passive safety it features dual front, side, and curtain airbags, active headrests, seatbelt pretensioning and seatbelt reminders. Also, as with every Hyundai vehicle, the passive safety features are fully grounded in a state-of-the-art safety structure. This includes deformable zones, occupant protection cell and 3-way load distribution technology. Further rigidity has been achieved with reinforced A-pillars, strengthened bulkhead, front and side members, toughened B and C pillars and full-length side impact protection.

Peace of mind features

Customer expectations in the C category have risen constantly over the past decade. The i30 is equipped to meet them. Active front headrests are optional. The interior rear view mirror is electro chromatic self-dipping (optional) to reduce night driving eyestrain. The heated power exterior mirrors fold electrically to prevent breakage in tight situations. Rear mounted parking sensors that give and audible warning are also optional. That all adds up to extra peace of mind. ABS/ESP 4-channel ABS and deselectable ESP (optional) are standard on the i30 for advanced active safety.

Welcome to Hyundai’s i world

While in the past, names of Hyundai vehicles had been chosen to express the values inherent in or associated with individual Hyundai models, Hyundai is now taking a more holistic approach to its nomenclature. Future vehicle names will display a clearer technology-orientation and have a common core that is easy to understand for everyone.

Hyundai chose an alpha-numerical code that could establish a link between technology and the Hyundai brand’s core values. With the “i”, Hyundai chose the letter that could carry both messages. The letter “i” has a long tradition as an icon for technology products. Furthermore, as a frequently used icon, the “i” is already established across Europe.

In addition, the “i” is also part of Hyundai’s brand promise. In the 1990s, Hyundai changed its entire corporate focus, moving away from its original business philosophy of producing “good-bargain” vehicles, to acquire a more sophisticated profile. Hyundai wanted to become more inspiring. Today, the will to “inspire” forms one of the cornerstones of the Hyundai brand. The letter “i” recognizes this fact and transports it to consumers.

The i30 is the first Hyundai to carry the “i” in its name. The number 30 is the numerical equivalent of the letter assigned to the i30’s segment, the European C segment.

i + numerical equivalent of segment letter:

i10 = A segment

i20 = B segment

i30 = C segment

i40 = D segment

i50 = E segment

For future derivatives or special segment models, an additional letter will be added to the i:

i30 CW = C segment cross-wagon

The new nomenclature will be applied only to future vehicles that are sold in Europe. It will not immediately replace the names of current models.

GENEVA: BMW M3 Concept

Tuesday, March 06, 2007 | 1 comments » Categories | , , , | Bookmark and Share

Finally, after months and months of anticipation BMW unveiled the E92 M3 at the Geneva Show today. Forget about the characterization concept, as what you see is what we’ll get (maybe with the exception of the carbon fibre reinforced plastic roof) at September's Frankfurt Motor Show. Like the “stock” E92 Coupe, the M3’s design is more of an evolution over the previous generation rather than a revolution. Of course, that’s something that’ll probably please most M3 byers, personally though, I’ll be honest and say that I'd have liked something a tad more dynamic but I guess cars like the E30 M3 come only once in a lifetime…-Continued: Click “Read More…” below to see the official press release & a high-res image gallery

BMW hasn't released any pictures of the interior but anyone who’s watched the evolution of the M3 over the years knows what to expect. Likewise, BMW avoided giving us any specific technical specifications on the E92 M3 apart from the fact that it’ll get a V8 engine. We’ve heard that the new V8 powerplant is a derivative of the M5’s 507Hp 5.0-litre V10 with a 4.0-litre capacity and an output of around 420Hp. That’ll be good enough for a 0 to 100km/h (62mph) time well under 5,0 sec with top speed electronically limited to 250km/h – 155 mph.

PRESS RELEASE - BMW M3 CONCEPT

The BMW M3 Concept Car -Description in Brief

Concept study of a BMW M3 by BMW M GmbH, dimensions and fundamental form based on BMW 3 Series Coupé, exclusive new engineering of almost every body element, purpose-built for individualistic form and maximum sporting potential.

At the core of this concept study is an M3-typical V8 engine tuned
to the high revving M concept.

Front design conveying a high performance sports car, functional execution of the front apron and engine compartment lid, a robust Powerdome and large air intakes that express the vehicle’s superior drive power, particularly voluminous air intakes for ample air supply to the engine compartment through the elimination of fog lamps, typical of M, and a front apron in a pronounced forward position that symbolises the car’s motoring spirit.

Sharply defined wheel arches, gill-shaped openings in the front side walls with an elaborate three-dimensional design typical of M cars, and chrome brackets with integrated direction indicators.Characteristic M-brand side skirts providing the side view with an energy-laden accent, visual emphasis of the rear-wheel drive and car’s wide track, 19-inch light alloy rims with the characteristic Y-spoke design, exclusive exterior mirrors with an aerodynamically optimised design.

Rear design with horizontal lines accentuating the car’s wide track, pronounced wheel orientation as a symbol of its powerful stance, rear diffuser that mirrors design elements of the front apron, balanced proportions underlining the BMW M3’s supremacy, M-typical double tailpipes arranged toward the centre of the vehicle.

Intelligent lightweight construction that directly influences the vehicle’s agility and dynamic performance, aluminium engine compartment lid. Side walls made of synthetic material and CFRP roof that optimise weight distribution and centre of gravity, visible CFRP roof construction as an additional design element, emphasis of flat silhouette and high tech character of the vehicle.

The Vision of Ultimate Driving Pleasure:The BMW M3 Concept Car.

Its very name is a symbol for unique performance on the racetrack and in everyday traffic. For two decades, BMW M3 has embodied the athletic heart of the brand in its most fundamental and succinct form. Its dominating role in motor sports and the ultimate driving experience it affords the driver on the road are inseparably intertwined. The qualities on which this synthesis is founded have given the BMW M3 the exceptional status it enjoys the world over. At BMW M GmbH, engineers have persisted in continuing this success story with the presentation of the new BMW M3 Concept Car. The concept study being presented to the public for the first time at the 77th International Motor Show in Geneva (8th to 18th of March, 2007) gives a first impression of what a future BMW M3 might look like.

The basic form for the BMW M3 Concept Car is a derivative of the new BMW 3 Series Coupé. The few components adopted directly from the series model are the headlamps and taillamps and, as the only body elements, the two doors and the luggage compartment lid. In all other respects, the BMW M3 Concept Car, which is being presented in the Chrome Shadow finish characteristic of BMW M GmbH concept studies, is obviously an individualistic and athletic vehicle with technology at the focus of its engineering.

Individualistic body concept with emotional aesthetics.

In keeping with tradition, the engineers at BMW M GmbH developed the BMW M3 Concept Car as a fundamentally individualistic vehicle. The level of commitment to this approach is clearly demonstrated by its body. While it is based on the dimensions and the underlying form of the BMW 3 Series Coupé, virtually all body elements have been newly developed and designed from the ground up. Apart from the supporting vehicle structure, only the doors and the luggage compartment lid were taken over from the series model.

All other components were specially engineered for the BMW M3 Concept Car, lending the vehicle exterior unique aesthetics that accentuate its superior power. Unmistakable features that make the BMW M3 Concept Car instantly recognisable are the special trim at the front and rear, the engine compartment lid with its bulging Powerdome and two air intakes, the lateral air slots in the front side walls, the side skirts and the exterior mirrors in a BMW M typical design.

Front with additional air intakes, engine compartment lid with Powerdome.

Faithful to the principle of “form follows function” in designing the body for the concept study, designers at BMW M GmbH used elements that not only visually emphasise the increased sportiness of the vehicle, but also serve a technical purpose. Conspicuous at the front are three large air intakes below the cooling grille that supply the engine with additional intake and cooling air. Strong, vertical struts delineate the air intakes and enhance their characteristic form.

The aluminium engine compartment lid exhibits a wide bulging curvature known as the Powerdome. Like the air intakes beside it, the Powerdome suggests the great potential that can be expected of a powerplant in the engine bay of a BMW M3. The M3 Concept Car features a high revving V8 engine that is anticipated for the series car once it goes into production.

The contours of the Powerdome and air intakes are in line with the forward-pointing sweep of the engine compartment lid and harmoniously blend into the overall design of the front, which is longer than that of the BMW 3 Series Coupé. Together with the double kidney grille typical of BMW and the flat headlamp units, they lend the BMW M3 Concept Car a highly dynamic character.

Wheel arches and side skirts communicate agility and stability.

The muscular front wheel arches of the BMW M3 Concept Car symbolise the high level of agility and driving stability achieved by this vehicle. Together with the forged 19-inch light alloy rims in the classic Y-spoke design, they emphasise the vehicle’s wide track, while a glance through the spokes of the rims reveals the compound high performance brakes developed exclusively for M vehicles.

The opening behind the wheel arch on the front side wall, which the designers refer to as gills, has an elaborate three-dimensional form that is split by a discreet chrome bracket containing the direction indicator and the M3 logo.

Two arched surfaces form the pronounced side skirt, creating a purposefully designed contrast between light and shadow. By giving the side wall a lower appearance, the side skirt lends the car a lighter, sportier look from this angle. The incidence of light on the likewise sharply defined rear wing and wheel stresses the dynamic character of this vehicle and visually highlights its rear-wheel drive.

The design of the side skirt corresponds with the shape of the strongly pronounced contour line. The play of light and shadow between the parallel contours of the skirt and contour line brings about a tightness in design that emphasises the individual character of the BMW M3 Concept Car even more strongly.

Exclusive exterior mirrors developed for the BMW M3 Concept Car feature the characteristic black double foot that reminds the viewer of the wings of an aircraft. Even this small detail is in keeping with the principle of “form follows function”. With their horizontal contour line and tapered shape toward the outside, the exterior mirrors not only contribute to the overall impression of the vehicle, but their aerodynamic shape, optimised in a wind tunnel, is advantageous to air resistance values.

Wide track, muscular stance rear design emphasises dynamic performance.

The rear of the BMW M3 Concept Car picks up on the design of the car’s front. The side lines gradually sink toward the rear and the wings end in a modelled hollow flute, emphasising the rear-wheel drive and visualising the superior dynamics of this vehicle. From any angle, the rear creates the impression of a pronounced wheel orientation and a muscular stance. Its proportions lend it confidence and a calm yet powerful impression. A visually discreet spoiler lip on the luggage compartment lid, also called a Gurney flap, optimally channels the air at the rear and additionally reduces lift on the rear axle.

The contours of the diffuser, whose design is subdivided by modelled struts, mirror the shape of the air intakes at the front. The diffuser and the double exhaust tailpipes positioned close to the vehicle’s longitudinal axis appear to pull the rear together at the centre and build up a tension in conjunction with the horizontal lines of the bumper. The tailpipes have a round cross section and are cut off vertically, as is typical for BMW M GmbH engineering.

Exclusive roof with visible carbon fibre structure.

There is hardly a body element in the BMW M3 Concept Car that exhibits the level of advanced technology as clearly as the roof. It is constructed of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP). Specialists at the BMW Plant in Landshut,Germany, rely on an exclusive production method in which the structure of the Formula 1 material remains visible and the finely structured surface is only coated with a layer of clear finish.

As a highly visible advanced technology component, the CFRP roof dominates the technically innovative appearance of the BMW M3 Concept Car. Seen from the side, it lets the roof edge appear flatter and thus lowers the perceived body height. Apart from the exclusive appearance, the CFRP roof also offers a real technical advantage: It is considerably lighter than a steel roof. This not only reduces the overall vehicle weight, but by reducing the weight of the highest element in the body, the centre of gravity is lowered as well. Thus, the reduction in weight at this location is particularly beneficial to the agility and dynamic performance of the vehicle.

The CFRP roof is a perfect example of how interlinking technical innovation with an individual design strategy was central to the development of the BMW M3 Concept Car. Following the tradition of the previous three generations of the BMW M3, this concept study represents a high performance sports car interpreted for use in everyday diving, with its every detail being yet another example of the objective pursued by the engineers. The BMW M3 Concept Car is a vision that shows where striving for the ultimate driving experience will take us in the future.

As we anticipated earlier last month, Nissan’s “secret” Geneva debut was the second generation X-Trail. It might not actually look like it, but this isn't a facelift but a brand new model.
