We found this little gem over at our Italian friends at Autoblog.it this morning. At first, we thought it must be some sort of a photoshop joke reminiscent of the vehicles featured in the “Cars Movie”. As it turns out though, it’s as real as it gets. Along with a bunch of extra images, we also discovered that the….Smorsche is the work of some crazy Greek guy who was probably fed up with the 500’s cutely looks and decided to give it the Porsche treatment! Ok, I just got a crazy idea; how about we give a real-life Porsche 911 Turbo to this innovative fella and let him transform it into a Fiat 500? Now, that would be something to talk about wouldn’t it…

I don’t know if I want to laugh or shiver with fear after watching this video. Allegedly, this incident happened in a tunnel in Russia. The really scary part is that no one stopped to help the poor guy who was lying down in the middle of the highway. Fortunately, it only (...) took about a couple of minutes for the “Ace Ventura” ambulance drivers to notice his absence and return to the “crime-scene” for the pick up.

This is becoming quite a trend don’t you think? I mean exactly one year after the presentation of Ferrari 575GTZ, Zagato’s presenting another one-off model, the GS Zagato that’s based on the outgoing Maserati Coupe, or to be exact, on its cabrio sibling, the Spyder that features a 180mm shorter wheelbase. While last year it was Japanese Ferrari collector, Mr. Hayashi who ordered the one-off 575GTZ, this time it’s a chap called Paolo Boffi, a well-known entrepreneur in the furnishing and luxury design sector -according to Zagato.

And yes, despite Zagato’s implications for a shape reminiscent of the 1954 Maserati A6 G Zagato, we do find more simularities with last year’s 575GTZ and this year’s Diatto concept…
The Maserati GS Zagato will make its public debut at the Concours d’Elegance Villa d’Este, to be held in Cernobbio (Italy) 20 -22 April 2007. - Press Release and high-res images after the jump (click “Read More”)

Press Release: Zagato Villa d'Este 2007

One year after the presentation of the Ferrari 575GTZ, Zagato returns to Villa d’Este with a world preview for fans of Italian sports sedans: the Maserati GS Zagato. In the most classic traditions of exclusive collections that inspired the creativity of car designers in the '50s and '60s, Paolo Boffi, well-known entrepreneur in the furnishing and luxury design sector, has commissioned from Zagato a customised look for his Maserati GS Spyder.

Zagato proposes a line that evoked the historical Maserati A6 G Zagato of 1954: one of the most beautiful Italian sedans ever built, and nowadays at the top of every collector’s wish list.

The Maserati GS Zagato, like its celebrated ancestor, has all-aluminium bodywork and bears the Trident on the bonnet and the Z on the wing, expressing eternal Italian excellence in its shape and its content. A winning combination that matches powerful and reliable mechanics, with an elegant and and sports style, both rigorously Made in Italy.

For purists of the compact coupé, afficionados of the Milano-based brand, it is a two-volume, two-seater, hatchback with a streamlined profile and a neat tail. The wheelbase is 180mm shorter, a spin-off from the Spyder, provides excellent handling and stability on curves, with extraordinary torsional rigidity.

In homage to the tradition of the gentlemen drivers who asked Zagato to transform the bodywork of their cars, modern collectors choose mechanics at the top level of technical evolution and ‘dress’ them in tailor-made garments that increase in value as time passes. This is the mission of a modern automobile atelier: to create timeless objects that celebrate prestigious models and brands and which, unlike mass produced vehicles, are destined to last for ever.

Zagato, born in 1919 as an atelier for automobiles and planes, has put its signature on all the most important mechanics of the last century, earning the opportunity to create, every time, an “instant classic”.Zagato’s strengths lie in the concept of sports-style elegance, a functional design that does not bow to momentary fashions but seeks out the excitement and pleasure of driving, and in the precious aluminium bodywork, a value recognised everywhere.

If you’re a spy shot “freak”, then you’ll know that French carmakers are among the most punctilious chaps in the industry when it comes to camouflaging cars. Not this time though as a reader of Wheels24 named Francois Malan managed to scoop the best images yet of the upcoming 308 with very little camouflage during a photo or advertisement shoot outside the city Stellenbosch in South Africa. Don’t get any weird ideas now; there’re other ways you can resolve your problems –theoretically speaking of course… According to Chosun, the 47-year-old from Seoul named Kim was quite pissed with his cell-phone carrier, SK for not fixing his Samsung-phone. After …16 phone-calls and two visits to the company’s headquarters he decided to try his luck once again by visiting the SK offices. Kim parked the Mercedes S500 (which by the way was registered under the name of a friend), right in front of SK’s building and put signs on the windshields that said "Delinquent SK". But before he managed to go in the building the security guard caught up with him and asked him to move the car. And that’s exactly what Kim did; he moved the car into the building! Though I’m not se keen on the idea of having a 4.5 m or 177-inch long race-car lying around my living-room as the seller suggests, this handmade Ferrari Formula One replica would surprise many of your neighbours if you parked it right outside of your garage. According to the company that sells it, the main body is carved from fibreglass, while the exterior decorations are made from metal, and the tyres are made from rubber –and no, the replica doesn’t have an engine. There’s only one catch and that’s the price which is 11.999 BP or around 23.800 USD / 17.600 EUR. For that kind of money and If you’re not thinking of using it for professional reasons, I really doubt that someone would pay that much cash to decorate his garage… Link: Drinkstuff

Porsche is spicing up its appearance in this year’s relatively unknown, Transsyberia Rally which starts off from Moscow and goes all the way though Siberia to Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia from 2-17 August. While in 2006 Porsche was represented with two Cayenne Teams, no less than 26 customer teams from all over the world are now entering the Rally with a special rallying version of the 2008 Cayenne S. The Transsyberia Rally is split up into six categories, with the Cayenne S entering in the Class 1C for gasoline-powered passenger cars with engine capacity of more than four liters. -Continued click “Read More…” below, high-res image gallery & specs included

Compared with the “regular" version of the Cayenne S, the Porsche Cayenne S Transsyberia has received several upgrades like the revised suspension and tires, the addition of a roll cage, a shorter final drive for the Tiptronic S along with a transverse lock to enhance off-road driving qualities etc. There’s no change under the hood as the power unit of the Porsche Cayenne S Transsyberia has been carried over from the stock version with hardly any changes (4.8-liter naturally aspirated V8 delivering 385 Hp). Porsche took measures to lower the cars weight though by throwing out several amenities like the rear seat bench, interior body panels and sound-proofing material. As for the Transsyberia’s appearance, Porsche designers handed the Cayenne S Transsyberia 2007 a sort of Carrera GT3 RS with all that clock-work orange.

PRESS RELEASE: Porsche Cayenne S Transsyberia

The Sporting All-Round Performer

The Porsche Cayenne S Transsyberia is a typical Porsche through and through, tailored precisely to the needs and requirements of the sporting, ambitious customer – which in this case means a car tailored specifically to the requirements of long-distance rally racing.

Compared with the “regular" version of the Cayenne S, the Porsche Cayenne S Transsyberia as a special rally version has been modified on a number of points serving first and foremost to enhance safety and the car's racing performance.

Production Engine, Shorter Transmission Ratio

The power unit of the Porsche Cayenne S Transsyberia has been carried over from the regular road version of the Cayenne S with hardly any changes: Output of this 4.8-litre natural-aspiration V8 with direct gasoline injection remains 385 HP (283 kW) at 6200 rpm. Maximum torque of 500 Newton-metres or 369 lb-ft, in turn, comes at just 3500 rpm.

VarioCam Plus valve management ensures a smooth and consistent surge of power throughout the entire speed range, with engine management varying valve lift on the intake side between 3.6 and 10 millimetres as a function of engine speed. And with the intake manifold also being variable in length, the engine provides muscular torque right from the start even at low engine speeds.

Despite the power increase over the previous engine, the new 4.8-litre reduces fuel consumption by approximately 15 per cent, giving the Cayenne S a significantly longer cruising range than before – obviously a big advantage particularly in a long-distance rally.

Automatically detecting the quality of the fuel it is running on, the engine is also able to run on regular fuel with an octane rating of 91 or more, even though this will reduce both engine output and torque. In fact, the engine is also able to run on a mixture of gasoline and ethanol, with up to 25 per cent of the latter.

A sports exhaust system reduced for minimum weight gives the Cayenne S Transsyberia a particularly powerful and muscular sound, while Tiptronic S transmission with a shorter final drive ratio helps to ensure even better acceleration both from the start and in gears. And last but not least, the transmission management has been optimised for offroad use.

Even Better off the Beaten Track

Like all other models in the Cayenne range, the Cayenne S Transsyberia also comes with Porsche Traction Management (PTM) permanent all-wheel drive.

In its basic mode, PTM feeds 62 per cent of the engine's torque to the rear wheels and 38 per cent to the front. Then a multiple-plate clutch operated by an electric motor and controlled electronically is able to vary the distribution of power as a function of driving conditions, if necessary feeding as much as 100 per cent of the engine's power completely to the front or rear.

The map-controlled longitudinal lock and the differential lock on the rear axle respond not only to lack of traction on the front or rear wheels, but also benefit from sensors measuring the speed of the vehicle, its lateral acceleration, the steering angle and the position of the accelerator pedal. Using this information, PTM is able to consistently calculate the degree of lock required on the two axles and feed precisely the power required to the axle at the front and rear.

A transverse lock fitted additionally in the Cayenne S Transsyberia serves to enhance offroad driving qualities to an even higher standard (and is also available in the regular production model as part of the optional Offroad Technology Package).

Particularly in heavy terrain, PDDC Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control, interacting with air suspension and PASM Porsche Active Suspension Management, enhances traction to an even higher standard. And should the driver activate the low-range mode on the six-speed automatic transmission by means of the control paddle, PDCC will automatically switch over to the offroad mode, the system thus allowing maximum articulation of the axles.

In the Special Offroad Mode provided by the air suspension, the maximum depth when crossing rivers and streams, etc, is approximately 750 mm or almost 30". To make such an extreme depth possible, both the body and the doors are sealed off against the penetration of water all the way up to the side windows. And using a flexible air filter snorkel, the air intake has been moved up even further to the roof of the vehicle, ensuring that the front wave typical when crossing water is not able to reach, let alone enter, the intake manifold.

The wheels and suspension of the Cayenne have naturally also been modified for the most extreme, long-term demands of rough tracks and rocky surfaces. As an example, the double-arm front axle comes with reinforced track control arms, with track itself being increased by 34 millimetres or 1.34" for extra stability.

The usual high-speed tyres fitted on the regular model are replaced by special offroad tyres measuring 255/55 R 18 T and homologated for speeds of up to 190 km/h or 118 mph. The tyres themselves are fitted on 18-inch, 15-spoke Cayenne S II light-alloy wheels and the rim hubs are finished in orange, like on the Porsche GT3RS.

Massive Safety Cell within the Interior

It is already well known that the Porsche Cayenne ranks right at the top in the offroader market also in terms of body stiffness and passive safety – which is no surprise, considering that more than 60 per cent of the body-in-white is made of high-strength steel. Forces generated in an accident are absorbed by three load levels above one another and fed into the stiff longitudinal floor support, the side-sills and tunnel areas. The reinforcements in the A- and B-pillars, in turn, are made of ultra-high-strength steel to improve safety in a rollover. And to offer both the driver and passenger even better protection from the consequences of a collision or rollover under racing conditions, the Cayenne S Transsyberia comes with a safety cage bolted on to the passenger cell. Indeed, this cage even follows the rules and requirements of the FIA Motorsport Authority, with the driver also being protected by an airbag for extra safety.

Optimised for Minimum Weight All Round

To set off the extra weight of the safety cage and rally equipment, and to further lower the vehicle's centre of gravity, the rear seat bench, interior body panels and sound-proofing material have all been removed from the car. Central locking, in turn, is replaced by a manual door opening mechanism on the front doors with orange-coloured opening and closing loops.

Both the rear window and the side windows at the rear are made of light polycarbonate, while the side windows at the front, as on all Cayenne models, feature special hydrophobic treatment at the outside to make water run off more quickly and smoothly and ensuring that the glass remains far cleaner for far longer than with conventional windows.

As another important advantage, both the driver and front passenger enjoy the benefits of lightweight sports seats with a leatherette/Alcantara cover.

Sporting Exterior

The new models in the Cayenne range are even more sporting and dynamic also in their looks than their predecessors. And so it is no surprise that the Cayenne S Transsyberia comes with the same brand-new front end as well as the dynamic rear-end design of the new model enhanced to an even higher standard, extra-large air intake scoops bearing clear testimony to the car's superior power and performance.

On the tailgate the Cayenne S Transsyberia boasts a roof spoiler with a double-wing profile fitted in position to provide even greater stability at high speeds. The front and rear air dams, in turn, are finished in stainless steel, and orange-coloured wheels give the Cayenne S Transsyberia a sporting look, making the vehicle easily recognisable at very first sight.

At the side this special rally model proudly boasts orange-coloured stripes bearing the name “Cayenne S Transsyberia 2007" in a look similar to that of the Porsche Carrera GT3 RS.

The Cayenne S Transsyberia is available exclusively in two special colour schemes – either Basalt Black Metallic or Crystal Silver Metallic. And matching the model designation at the sides as well as the wheel rims, contrasting elements such as the exterior mirrors, the rear wing, the additional headlights and crossbars on the cooling air intakes are all finished in orange.

Wide Range of Rally Equipment

All 26 units of the Cayenne S Transsyberia come as standard with a navigation unit enabling the team to plan their routes also off the beaten track, with the navigation system naturally being masterminded by the passenger for optimum efficiency.

The glove compartment is replaced on this special model by a Tripmaster computer enabling the co-pilot to exactly scrutinize the route between individual navigation points on the way.

Most of the control units are fitted within the interior, and all electric lines and wires have been installed at new points and in new positions.

Using a central switch at the right beneath the driver's seat, the man at the wheel or the co-driver are able to switch the on-board electrics on and off in one quick and convenient operation, thus re-setting the electronic system if necessary even while driving.

Air for the engine is drawn in through a special opening above the engine compartment lid, a snorkel serving to move the air intake up even higher all the way to roof level, thus ensuring that the front wave generated when crossing rivers or streams, etc, is not able to enter the intake manifold.

Reinforced and extra-large underfloors protection panels made of aluminium and an additional cover made of stainless steel for the exhaust tailpipes protect the Cayenne S Transsyberia from the particular damage and exposure easily encountered on a rally with its extremely tough conditions.

The regular foot-operated parking brake is replaced by a handbrake enabling the driver to oversteer the vehicle intentionally in a tight bend. Four additional headlights are fitted on the roof, and to successfully master particularly difficult and demanding terrain, as well as to salvage other vehicles, the Cayenne S Transsyberia comes with a winch easy to fit when necessary and stored for convenient use in the luggage compartment.

The luggage compartment also comes with two 20-litre reserve cans, a hydraulic offroad car jack, two fire extinguishers, two sand boards, two full-size spare wheels, and two transport boxes for tools. Further features included as standard are two two-man tents, two heat-car insulated mats, four lashing belts, a nine-metre-long salvage belt complete with tackle, a folding spade, a folding saw, an axe, a manually operated and adjustable headlight, four towing bar openings and a complete Hazet toolkit-carscoop.

While I’m pretty sure that across the pond this will ring like a joke to the ears of most Europeans for the folks at MTV’s “Pimp My Ride” it’s a step forward to being “green” without loosing their “bling-bling”. As part of a very special Earth Day episode that’ll air on April 22nd at 1 pm ET/PT, the Galpin Auto Sports (G.A.S.) crew will return in the fifth season of MTV’s “Pimp My Ride” transforming a 1965 Chevy Impala into a biodiesel vehicle nicknamed the “Bio Rocket.

The green-pimped Impala will be fitted with a new PPE supercharged GM Duramax diesel engine that runs on B-100 biodiesel which, according to G.A.S., reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 78 percent –they don’t say compared with what though.... The Bio Rocket’s engine power was boosted from 350 horsepower to 800 horsepower with 1400 lb-ft of torque and according to the team the Bio Rocket can go from 0-60 mph (96 km/h) in roughly 3.5 seconds. PRESS RELEASE: GALPIN GOES GREEN FOR EARTH DAY WITH MONSTER BIODIESEL MUSCLE CAR DEBUT ON MTV’s “PIMP MY RIDE”

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger Helps Galpin Auto Sports Launch 800-HP “Bio Rocket” Giving Serious Muscle To The Green Movement

VAN NUYS, CA (April 9, 2007) – In celebration of Earth Day, the Galpin Auto Sports (G.A.S.) crew returns in the fifth season of MTV’s “Pimp My Ride” and shows that alternative fuel vehicles can be fast and fun by transforming a 1965 Chevy Impala into a biodiesel vehicle nicknamed the “Bio Rocket.” As if the event needed any more muscle, the Bio Rocket will be unveiled by special guest Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger during a ground-breaking Earth Day episode of “Pimp My Ride” scheduled to air on Sunday, April 22, 2007 at 1pm ET/PT. The episode will also serve as the kick-off of a “Pimp My Ride” Sneak Peek marathon featuring brand new episodes from the fifth season.

Galpin Auto Sports, the garage of “Pimp My Ride,” takes going green to an all new level in this special episode. Galpin Motors’ dedication to protecting our Earth dates back to 1979 when they began converting fleets of gasoline engine vehicles to run on methanol and even opened the nation’s first methanol service station. Additionally, Galpin Motors was one of the first dealers to sell Ford flexible fuel vehicles, Ford’s TH!NK Neighbors and other electric vehicles, for which they even built on-site charging stations.

“With the increasing amount of traffic on the roads, protecting the environment is a major concern for automotive manufacturers and dealers,” said Beau Boeckmann, president of Galpin Auto Sports, Vice President of Galpin Motors and consulting producer and on-air talent for “Pimp My Ride.” “By installing a monster 800 horsepower diesel engine to run on biodiesel in the ’65 Impala, we demonstrated that you don’t have to sacrifice power to go green.”

The Bio Rocket is loaded with a new PPE supercharged GM Duramax diesel engine that runs on B-100 biodiesel which reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 78 percent. Switching the Bio Rocket to alternative fuel consumption did not compromise its performance and speed. In fact, it improved it significantly. The Bio Rocket’s engine power was boosted from 350 horsepower to 800 horsepower with 1400 lb-ft of torque allowing the Bio Rocket to jet from 0-60 mph in approximately 3.5 seconds.

Making the inside green counts too, so the G.A.S. crew made the seats from a material comprised of 100 percent recycled fibers. The Bio Rocket’s trunk is lined with biodegradable, all natural hemp and reclaimed wood that was recovered from quarries and pre-existing wooden structures. Finally, eco-friendly meets convenience with a built-in GPS that shows the driver where to find the nearest biodiesel station.

“Galpin’s customizing innovation began in the late ‘50’s and produced national trends in the automotive aftermarket,” said Boeckmann. “50 years later, the aftermarket and tuner world has become a much greater part of the mainstream. We see Galpin’s move to green, ground-shaking horsepower as the ripple that can start a sea of change and we are proud to start that right here, right now.”

You could call the W2 the first new Rover model in years, but I guess we’d rightfully anger British enthusiasts so lets just say its the first Chinese-designed Roewe. According to our initial info Roewe (they presented the Chinese version of the Rover 75 dubbed 750E a few months ago), will put the 4door-sedan concept into production with little changes towards the end of the year. We’ll have more on the W2 Concept as soon as we get our hands on an English press release since we don’t plan on learning Chinese -for the time being that is...

So, do you need any more proof that the Chinese are getting all the goodies? First, it was the Holden Statesman / Caprice based 2008 Park Avenue, now just a few days later we get to see the first picture of Buick’s upcoming “gullwing-door” Riviera concept that’s making its worldwide debut at the… 2007 Auto Shanghai Show that opens up its doors to the public on April 22. We’re still in the black when it comes to details but according to an earlier press release, the Buick concept car was developed at PATAC (Pan Asia Technical Center) in Shanghai and its purpose in life is to preview the future global Buick design language. Biddings for Josef Ratzinger’s -now known as Pope Benedict XVI, ex 1999 VW Golf VI have just ended a few minutes ago (Saturday, 14 April 2007 09:18:24 PDT) on ebay. The car’s current owner, Texas-based online casino, GoldenPalace.com sold it bidder No33 (we don’t have any details yet), for a staggering 204.400 USD.

This is the second time that the "holly" Golf changed hands since the…blessed 21-year-old Benjamin Halbe (it was only when he obtained the car’s registration documents that he realized who’s car it was) sold it to GoldenPalace in 2005 for approximately 244.590 USD. According to GoldenPalace proceeds from the auction will benefit "Habitat for Humanity Great Britain". Link: ebay

This spectacular car crash happened last year at the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. At some point Matt Connolly Motorsports BMW M3 driver Joey Hand, went off the track and into the grass but while everything seemed under control a sudden elevation change caused the car to launch into the air. That led to eight (!) consecutive flips across the track until he came to a stop upside-down. Amazingly enough, Joey Hand managed to come out of this crash virtually unscratched.

2009 Ford X-MAX SUV Renderings

Saturday, April 14, 2007 | 0 comments » Categories | | Bookmark and Share

We’re not sure about the name yet but it’s definite that the production version of Ford’s 2006 Paris Show, Iosis-X concept is coming out towards the end of 2008. Based on FoMoCo’s C1 platform (Ford Focus, Mazda3, Volvo S40), the X-MAX will share most of its components with the upcoming Volvo XC60 and if Mazda gives the final ok, with the CX-5. While Volvo’s proposition in the compact SUV / Crossover segment will be more upgrade aiming at the German trio – BMW X3, Audi Q5 & Mercedes MLK, the X-MAX will take a hit on the mainstream competitors like Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V and VW’s Tiguan. (Ford Focus, Mazda3, Volvo S40). Expect a wide diesel and petrol engine range starting with Ford’s all-new 125Hp 1.6-litre petrol and going up to the 225Hp 2.5-liter Turbo. Pics Via: Automotorsport

If Warner Bros commissioned an Italian designer to pen the Batmobile today, we’re sure it would look something like this; sleek, sexy, exotic and at the same time as bad it gets. There’s no official information yet on the Spada’s Codatronca concept so we’ll withhold ourselves from posting any unsubstantial facts that we’ve seen here and there for the time being. We’ll just note that Spada is an Italian design-house whose work includes several classics like the Lancia Fulvia Sport, the Lamborghini 3500 GTZ, Alfa Romeo TZ, Aston Martin DB4GTZ as well more down to earth models like the Fiat Tipo and the BMW-E32 7 Series & E34 5-Series (checkout all the cars here). FYROM (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) newspapers are linking David Beckham’s BMW X5 4.8is that was stolen in Madrid last year to the interior minister of the newly created Balkan country, Gordana Jankulovska. The BMW fell into the hands of FYROM government after it was impounded due to the fact that it had been illegally imported into the country from Greece. Though it’s not officially confirmed yet that Jankulovska is actually driving Beckham’s stolen Bimmer, the story has created such a big fuss that the minister gave an interview to BBC where she noted, “This car changed a number of owners before and some of the numbers were changed in an illegal way. It is impossible to have a final confirmation that this is the car". –Continued: Click “Read More…” below

In another interview though, Jankulovska told B92 radio in Belgrade that she would be happy to meet the English soccer player if it turned out that the car belonged to him. Well actually, what she meant to say is that she would be more than happy to meet the world press and get the chance to pose for the central pages of hundreds of gossip magazines…

On April 14, 1927, the very first series-produced Volvo car dubbed OV 4, rolled out of the Swedish carmaker’s factory in the city of Gothenberg. 80 years and 15 million cars later, Volvo’s still alive and kicking under the protective (...?) arms of Ford Motor Company. If we where asked to describe Volvo with a single word, undoubtedly the first thing that would pop-up in our head would be “Safe”. A decade ago, our second thought would be the word “boring”, but thanks to diligent work over the years Volvo has successfully managed to present a significant number of models throughout its range that might not have blown us out of our pants in term of design or dynamics, but you couldn't call them boring.

Apparently Volvo thinks the same way as we do since their current press release concentrates on the “80 years of safety” and not the “80 years of Volvo cars” -that’s why we avoided getting into any details of Volvo’s rich history in safety innovations. Anywayz, we thought we’d pick the top 3 list of the most characteristic and mark defining Volvo models -post WWW III. So here’s what we came up-with: the astonishing P1800 Coupe of the 60’s, the brick-safe 240 / 260 Series of the 70’s & 80’s and the all-new 2008 C30 hatch which promises to combine elements and characteristics from both Volvo worlds (P1800 & 240). Press Release: Volvo celebrates 80 years of safety - Scroll Down For The Image - Gallery

Some principles never change. And after 80 years of safety advances from Volvo, the philosophy expressed by the company's founders is more appropriate than ever:

"Cars are driven by people. Therefore the guiding principle behind everything we make at Volvo is - and must remain - safety" (Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson)

Volvo will celebrate its 80th anniversary on 14 April - just a month after the world premiere of the all-new Volvo V70 and XC70 in Geneva. As always, new Volvo models come with improved safety features, and the new arrivals are equipped with extended inflatable curtains which, in combination with adjustable child booster cushions, belt force limiters adapted for children and a strong side structure, help to provide children of different heights with effective protection in a side collision. Child safety has always been important to Volvo, which introduced the first rear-facing child seats on the market as early as in the 1960s.

The philosophy of the founding fathers has provided the basis for many other new safety features over the years. One example is the safety cage, which was introduced in the Volvo PV 444 in 1944, together with the laminated windscreen, and was among the first major safety features in the company's cars. The three-point safety belt - the most important of all Volvo's inventions - appeared in 1959. This is considered to be one of the technical inventions that has saved most lives in the history of mankind. Side-impact protection (SIPS) was introduced in 1991 and the WHIPS whiplash protection system in 1998. In today's models, the crumple zone introduced in 1966 has been refined with the use of four different grades of steel to optimise the absorption of collision forces.

For the last 37 years, Volvo's own accident research team has been studying and learning from accidents involving Volvo cars. The team provides Volvo's research and development function with vital knowledge on a continuous basis.

Volvo envisages a future in which the traffic environment will be completely safe. In this vision, cars will be equipped with intelligent systems that will not only help to improve driver alertness, but may even take control of the car if the driver does not react in sufficient time to avoid an impending emergency. This work is already in full progress. The latest Volvo cars incorporate several advanced safety systems that assist the driver in this respect. These include BLIS, which warns of vehicles in the blind spot and Collision Warning with Brake Support which, in addition to visual and audible warnings, ‘primes' the brakes to help avoid a collision with the vehicle in front.

"The thrust of our new safety philosophy is to place human capability at the centre of our research work and future systems development. The objective is to help the driver to keep his or her hands on the wheels and eyes on the road," explains Ingrid Skogsmo, director of the Volvo Cars Safety Centre, who was named Woman of the Year 2006 by the influential trade magazine Automotive News.

City Safety, which was unveiled for the first time in the XC60 Concept at the Detroit Motor Show earlier this year, represents yet another step towards this vision. The system itself can, in some situations, apply the brakes to avoid a collision and Volvo Cars hopes that its use will prevent half of all rear-end collisions. City Safety is scheduled for commercial introduction within the next two years.

2008 Honda Accord Coupe Scooped

Friday, April 13, 2007 | 1 comments » Categories | , | Bookmark and Share

Honda’s upcoming 2008 Accord Coupe has been caught on camera performing test-runs somewhere in the States by a reader at Howardforums. Actually, the reader managed to capture two test-cars with his phone-camera giving us a pretty good idea of what to expect later on the year when Honda introduces the car to the American market. In comparison with the Detroit Auto Show concept, seems like Honda remained relatively faithful to the prototype. -Click “Read More…” below for more images

Looks like the French have beaten the Chinese in the cheap-ass car game -for the time being, at least. Following the introduction of the low-cost sedan in Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador, the Logan will be launched under the Renault brand in Argentina in May and in Brazil in July thus increasing the markets that the car is sold to a total of 57 countries. The Brazilian & Argentinean Logan’s will be built at Renault’s Ayrton Senna Complex in Curitiba, Brazil. Renault also confirmed earlier reports that it’ll sell the Logan as a Nissan to the Mexican market later on the year. -Click “Read More…” below for more high-res pics and the official press-release

PRESS RELEASE

Renault launches Logan in Argentina and Brazil -Another step forwards for Renault Commitment 2009

-The launch of Logan in Argentina and then in Brazil expands Renault's line-up in the two countries, where family buyers can now obtain the practical, spacious model at an affordable price.

-The gradual introduction of vehicles based on the X90 platform boosts production capacity utilization at the Curitiba complex in Brazil.

-The list of vehicles produced in Curitiba includes a model derived from Logan for the Mexican market, where it will be sold under the Nissan brand.

-Renault's plan for growth in Latin America is underway, with an expansion of the range, increases in production and sales, staff recruitment and the development of the sales network.

Coming after the introduction of Logan in Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador, the launch of Logan under the Renault brand in Argentina in May and in Brazil in July marks a new phase in the implementation of Renault Commitment 2009 in Latin America. Logan epitomizes Renault's bid to win over a new target market in the region, namely a family clientele looking for a spacious, affordable vehicle that is also both robust and easy to maintain. The region's two main automobile markets – Brazil and Argentina – are currently expanding and represent significant potential for Renault. In 2006, a total of 1,834,581 vehicles (cars + LCVs) were registered in Brazil, plus a further 420,356 in Argentina. These volumes represent an increase of 28% and 57%, respectively, from 2004 to 2006.

Logan: a new product to build on Renault's long-standing presence in Argentina

Thanks to its Santa Isabel plant in Cordoba, Renault has benefited from production facilities in Argentina for more than 50 years. The brand can also count on strong brand awareness in this country where it claimed a market share of 11.5% in 2006. Logan joins the three-box saloon segment and will enhance Renault's existing range, which currently features Laguna II, Scénic I,

Mégane I (4- and 5-door versions), Mégane II (estate, 4- and 5-door versions), Clio II (3-, 4- and 5-door versions), Kangoo and Master. This product offensive will be further boosted by the import of Grand Scenic II from April 2007, followed by that of Mégane II Coupe Cabriolet in June. Three-box saloons are particularly popular in Argentina and Logan is aimed essentially at family buyers. The proven sturdiness and durability that have paved the way for its success in other markets stand out as incontestable sales arguments.

An unprecedented product offensive in Brazil

Following in the wake of New Mégane in March 2006 and Mégane Grand Tour estate in November 2006, Logan is the third vehicle to be launched on the Brazilian market within the framework of Renault Commitment 2009. Logan will be available here with the bioethanolpowered engines required for this market, and these powerplants represent a world first for the Logan range. As in Argentina, Logan is essentially set to appeal to the Brazilian family buyer looking for a practical, spacious car at an attractive price. Renault will be launching three other models before the end of Renault Commitment 2009 and, with a renewed range adapted to local demand, Renault do Brasil is aiming to double its sales and generate a positive operating margin.

Optimization of production facilities in Curitiba

The Ayrton Senna Complex in Curitiba (Parana State) comprises three factories: an LCV factory producing both Renault (Master) and Nissan (Frontier and Xterra) models, a passenger car factory and a powertrain plant that feeds South America. Inaugurated in 1998, the passenger car body assembly factory currently produces Clio, Clio Sedan, Mégane, Mégane Grand Tour and Scénic.

Logan is the third model to be introduced in Curitiba in one year. The passenger car factory has a production capacity of 200,000. The arrival of Logan, which will be the line's sixth vehicle, enhances the factory's flexibility and optimizes use of its facilities. Annual production capacity for X90 platform vehicles is 110,000 units, destined for the home market and for export, mainly Argentina and Mexico. A model derived from Logan will be marketed in Mexico under the Nissan brand. Further information about the vehicle will be announced later.

To increase daily production from 300 to 450 vehicles, Renault introduced a second shift in the passenger car assembly factory at the beginning of April 2007 and has recruited 600 employees. Logan will feature a high degree of local content, with 80% of parts produced in Brazil. The objective is to increase this figure to 90% by 2009.

Logan, a global success

Since its launch in September 2004, more than 450,000 Logans have been purchased worldwide. The current year stands out as a key period in the X90 Programme, with production starting up in Iran, India and Brazil. Logan is currently manufactured in seven countries, is sold in 55 markets and makes a major contribution to Renault's international expansion and growth.

The X90 Programme represents a significant share of the targeted volume increase of 800,000 vehicles specified in the Renault Commitment 2009 plan. In America, Logan is assembled in the Colombian plant of Sofasa, located in Envigado. Marketing began in September 2005 in Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador. The Logan Programme has met with considerable success in Europe, where the range has been extended to include an estate version (Logan MCV) and a utility version (Logan Van).

The first two months of 2007 saw Logan MCV sales reach 5,500 in the European and Turkish markets. Logan's debut in Iran – where it is known as Tondar-90 – is also proving particularly promising. In the space of just one week, Iranian customers ordered almost 85,000 vehicles, which is equivalent to the year's total production. The model is built in the factories of Renault's two Iranian partners – Iran Khodro and Pars Khodro – and production capacity will reach 300,000 units per year by 2009. Meanwhile, in India, the first Logan rolled out of the Nashik factory on April 4, 2007, less than two years after the signing of a joint venture agreement with Renault's Indian partner Mahindra.

This development is the fruit of Renault's expertise in the realms of product and process engineering, quality and purchasing, plus Mahindra's production expertise, frugal approach and in-depth understanding of the Indian market, supported by the commitment of the operators working in the factory.

Seems like those crazy folks at Mitsuoka where fed up with all those Nissan based, Jaguar look-alike replicas so they decided to take a hit –literally, on the Ford Mustang. The fact that they denied Nissan the privilege of using their cars doesn’t mean of course that they lost their tastes… So here’s what they came up with: a Mustang that looks like “milf” Bentley up front and like a Cadillac Eldorado ETC at the back. Revolting isn’t it? And imagine that in Japan Mitsuoka is asking a hefty 7.770.000 YEN or 65.000 USD for the V8 version and 6.720.000 YEN or 56.300 USD for the V6. Huh! This must be one of our most intriguing ebay-related posts by far; not only is the vendor selling a practically inexistent 2008 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet that we’ve only seen in spy pics for the time being but he’s also estimated the price of the car along with a bunch of extras including natural brown leather sports seats, parking assist and Sport Chrono package, at 143.000 USD (106.500 EUR). And that doesn't include destination charges! -Continued: Click “Read More…” below

But wait, it gets even better. Leaving aside the fact that he posted a… spy pic of the upcoming 997 Turbo Cabriolet, check out this footnote: “The car has been shipped from Stuttgart Germany. So if I’m not mistaken, a production version of the 997 Turbo Cabriolet is in a ship on its way to LA as we are speaking? Something smells fishy here… Via: Autoblog.it , Source: ebay

2009 Saab 9-4X Compact SUV Renderings

Thursday, April 12, 2007 | 0 comments » Categories | , | Bookmark and Share

Our little chit-chat with a Saab PR last week wasn’t only about the facelifted 9-3 that’s coming this fall with a new AWD version fitted with a 290Hp 2.8 V6 Turbo engine, as we also learned that Saab will debut its first-ever compact SUV, the 9-4X, towards the end of 2008.

Although not officialy confirmed, it’s rumored that Saab’s 9-4X will be based on the next-gen Opel Vectra / Saab 9-3 / Cadillac BLX platform. Talking about Cadillac, the American car-maker will also produce their versions of the Saab 9-4X, both of whom will compete against the likes of BMW’s X3 and the upcoming Mercedes MLK, Volvo XC60 & Audi Q5 SUV’s. Back to Saab, GM’s Swedish-arm will probably tease us with a prototype version of the 9-4X in the upcoming months but until then; check out a bunch of computer-generated renderings from the swedish mag, Teknikens Varld

As promised last year, Chrysler Group tuning specialist Startech presented a full-blown version of the Dodge Caliber. So apart from the 2.0 CRD engine upgrade which raises output to 180Hp from 140 thus dropping sprint time from 0 - 100 km/h (62mph) from 9.3 to 8.6 seconds, customers can now add to their shopping list an aerodynamic-bodykit along with numerous customization options for the interior. We’ll give kudos to Startech for managing to give a sporty look to the Caliber without going overboard. – Full Press Release and more high-res images after the jump (click “Read More”)

STARTECH Refines the Dodge Caliber (SCROLL DOWN FOR MORE IMAGES)

Sporty Design and Engine Tuning for the CRD Diesel

Tuning 'Made in Germany' for the Dodge Caliber: STARTECH offers a strikingly styled aerodynamic-enhancement program, and engine tuning for the diesel model.

To add more sporty emphasis to the characteristic appearance of the Dodge Caliber the STARTECH designers have developed an aerodynamic-enhancement kit that adds to the compact car's striking design.

The STARTECH front fascia not only visually upgrades the front; it also reduces lift on the front axle. The sides are given a more homogenous appearance with the STARTECH side body cladding that gives the Caliber a lower and sleeker appearance.

The rear of the Dodge can also undergo sporty modifications: The custom-tailored STARTECH lift-gate attachment continues the bullish contour of the rear fascia over the entire width of the rear. The rear fascia with stylized tailpipes left and right gives the Caliber a more powerful look. The fascia can be complemented with the STARTECH sport exhaust system. The rear spoiler is attached to the liftgate and stylishly rounds out the STARTECH designer suit.

For the Dodge Caliber 2.0 CRD with common-rail turbodiesel engine STARTECH offers powerful and reliable power tuning that ups power output by 40 hp / 29.4 kW. The STARTECH SD3 performance kit consists of a plug-and-play control module that can be installed by any authorized Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge dealer in half an hour, thanks to an included custom wire harness. Like the production models the STARTECH-tuned Dodge Caliber 2.0 CRD meets EURO IV emission limits.

With STARTECH SD3 tuning peak power output of the 2.0-liter common-rail four cylinder engine with Diesel particulate filter jumps from standard 140 hp / 103 kW to 180 hp / 132 kW at just 4,000 rpm. Even more important for everyday driving is the increase in peak torque from 310 Nm to 360 Nm between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm. Thus equipped sprint time from 0 - 100 km/h is shortened from 9.3 to 8.6 seconds. Top speed of the tuned Caliber diesel model increases to 201 km/h.

STARTECH offers a stainless-steel rear muffler with one oval tailpipe on either side for all engine variants of the Caliber. There are two versions, one to be combined with the STARTECH rear fascia and one for installation in combination with the stock bumper. The exhaust system lends the Caliber not only a more thrilling rear appearance but also a more powerful exhaust note.

STARTECH offers more driving fun in the form of custom-tailored modifications to the suspension of the Dodge. Progressive-rate springs precision-calibrated to the standard shocks lower the ride height of the vehicle by some 30 millimeters.

Wheels make a car and STARTECH offers various custom-tailored STARTECH Monostar tire/wheel combinations with 19- and 20-inch diameters for the Caliber. The palette of suitable Monostar IV five-spoke wheels ranges from size 8.5Jx19 all around with tires up to 245/40 R 19 in size to an especially exclusive version with size 9Jx20 wheels and 245/35 R 20 tires.

We’ve heard of slalom and skid pad tests and a whole bunch of other tests but this one beats them all. A group of Americans –we don’t know any details concerning the how’s and why’s, where taken to the famous Nurburgring race-track in Germany to learn how to slow down
a vehicle in case your brakes died or if you suddenly came across a big accident that you didn't have time or space to avoid using the brakes. Forget about using the gearbox to slow down as these folks were guided into taking a more drastic action: they were taught how to throw the car on the guardrail! It’s a 5min long video but be WARNED; the sound of metal meeting metal is dreadful as chalkboard scratching.

While surfing the net, I stumbled upon an interesting post over at Jalopnik’s website referring to an article on Motor Trend Blog written by Todd Lassa. In a nutshell, Mr. Lassa began by commenting on the Mullaly – Bush incident (which to be honest, we haven’t followed but you can get an idea here & here) only to continue an excessive attack on bloggers and trained car-journalists working in mainstream media.

My opinion? I hate generalizations. I agree that a significant number of bloggers base articles on rumours without checking them out first, but on the other hand, I know plenty of bloggers who put trained journalist to shame with their thoroughly checked and lightning-speed articles that pop-up when the news happens and not a month later when prep-school kids can do it with the same ease.

A few examples? Let’s take the Corvette Blue Devil and the BMW X6 that Mr. Lassa referred to. The NY Show BMW X6 rumour -not that we want to praise ourselves, but I assume he’s talking about our April Fools Day joke that was picked up by several blogs (and sites…), and as Mr Lassa noted, “trained journalists were chasing bloggers' stories that the BMW X6 would appear at that show”. True, however, there were bloggers like our Spanish pals over at Motorpasion who “managed” to see straight through us and as far as we know, they’re not trained car journalists.

As for the Corvette Blue-Devil, just for the record, while Motortend fell for WindingRoad’s December hoax, several car blogs –Carscoop included, didn’t. But how the heck should we know about these things, we’re just a couple of ignorant and arrogant “small-time bloggers” with no idea whatsoever about car-journalism... So as Mr. Lassa notes on his article, "from now on, if you want the real story, just come to this space (aka Motor Trend) and other websites of well-established news organizations". Yeah right...

You knew it was coming, but you weren’t sure when. Now you know; this fall at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Audi/VW specialist will present their tuned version of the R8. Albeit ABT hasn’t released any official images yet, the Bavarian tuner is teasing us as with a couple of sketches allowing us to get the picture. Design-wise ABT’s aero-kit includes side skirts, rear-wing, carbon-fibre bonnet, redesigned front & rear bumpers with the latter featuring four inclined arranged exhaust end pipes and of course, a new set of 20-inch alloys. Kinda bling-bling in a German way but we’ll wait to see it in real-life pics for our final verdict. ABT doesn’t say anything about interior-mods, but we more than sure that they’ll fiddle around with the cabin.

And now to the really important stuff. Thanks to the addition of an ABT supercharger, the stock 4.2 V8 gets a 110 Hp (81 kW) power hike pushing output to 530Hp (390 kW). According to ABT, the supped-up R8 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 317 km/h – 197 mph (stock version: 4,6 sec and 301 km/h – 187mph respectively). -Click “Read More…” below for the press release

PRESS RELEASE: Τhe Abt R8: Sports car in perfection

There are cars and dream cars. The latter includes Lamborghini’s Gallardo, Ferrari’s F430 or Porsche’s 911 Turbo. These cars make your heart beat faster and show the perfected magic of speed on the roads. Abt Sportsline’s R8 will also be among these outstanding super sports cars and is getting ready to overtake them in the prestige duel.

The design studies already show the first impressions of Abt’s sportiest creation – and prove that the Kempten-based tuner manages to perfect an excellent serial model like the R8 to detail and accentuate its racing genes already in the drawing. The front of the Bavarian R8 shows the marked Abt face. Together with the unique and beautiful rear with its four inclined arranged exhaust end pipes, the rear diffuser and the extravagant rear wing, the front of the Abt R8 is part of an overall concept that brings about phenomenal roadholding. The add-on parts of the super sports cars from the Allgäu-region improve downforce and ensure perfect balance of the front and rear axis. This is especially notable in speed ranges reserved for only a few cars. The sideblades which were developed especially for the Abt R8 and the Abt side skirts give the Abt R8 a new and individual design besides aerodynamical advantages. The aerodynamically efficient Abt body kit, which also includes carbon-fibre parts, is a real eye catcher but also shows the state-of-the-art Bavarian precision work. With the ingenious construction, which also includes a carbon-fibre bonnet, not only a maximum reduction in weight is achieved but it also ensures optimized weight distribution of the Abt R8 – the pure presence of the model athlete already shows this.

Technology and design milestones do not only come from Maranello or Sant’Agata-Bolognese but also from Kempten. The Abt R8 will be a gorgeous dream car with the genes of a top-class race car. This special automobile will belong to one of the fastest among the fastest; the Abt R8 will also challenge the Lamborghinis and Porsches. With regards to the anticipated performance data the Bavarians are traditionally discreet. But this data already amazes sports car fans and makes them want to spur the hot-blooded Bavarian horses. 530 HP (390 kW) are to be drawn from the 4.2 litre-V8 thanks to the Abt supercharger. Compared with the serial model which already shows impressive performance data this means an increase of 110 HP (81 kW).

The brand new Abt 20-inch BR wheels stylishly transfer this power onto the asphalt. The all-wheel-drive dream car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 317 km/h. These values are synonymous with magic and this extraordinary super sports car desperately wants to be driven. By means of the Abt suspension which is adjustable in height, pressure and rebound, the performance and driving comfort of the super sports car can be adapted perfectly to the requirements of its driver

A dream car is becoming reality: In autumn the top-class sports cars will have a new challenger as this is when the almost unrivalled fast and uniquely beautiful Abt R8 becomes available

Fabulous (...) Lexus LS460

First of all let’s get this straight; we may find this supped-up LS460 impressive, but under no circumstances fabulous. That’s just the name of the Japanese tuner who offers this bodykit consisting of front and rear spoilers and a subtle rear wing. And oh yeah, just to spice things up Fabulous also threw in massive 22’’ alloys in 245/30 tires up front and… 295/22 on the rear axle. -More images after the jump (click “Read More”)

About a week ago at the Seoul Motor Show, GM introduced the Daewoo LX4 or in other words, a rebadged 2008 Holden Statesman / Caprice. Now its turn for the Chinese to get a taste of Aussie RWD luxury and note it’s not the first time as the previous generation Statesman / Caprice was also offered as the Buick Royaum. And no, there’s still no word for an American version but why should there be since the Chinese bought more Buick's than the Americans last year

Although there’s no V8 power under the hood, Chinese buyers will get the option of two V6 engines, the 250Hp 3.6-liter which is also offered the Aussie models and a 201Hp strong 2.8-liter. In comparison with its Australian and Korean counterparts the Park Avenue looses the front wing air-vents while it gets a new front grille outside and redesigned center console, larger air-vents and different seats inside. -Press Release and more images along with a teaser video featuring Tiger Woods after the jump (click “Read More”)

Receiving its first update since its debut in 2003 (V50: 2004), Volvo’s revised compact-size model stands out thanks to the new set of bumpers, a redesigned grille and the slimmer tail-lights. While subtle, the changes manage to give the S40 /V50 a fresher exterior look. In the inside new design details include the revised instrument panel and air vents along with new trims and upgraded storage bins.

Mechanic wise, the only differentiation is that the Ford Focus ST based 2.5-liter T5 engine gets a performance hike of 10Hp, rising output to 230 hp. Depending in which country you live the S40 / V50 will also be available with another six petrol engines (1.6 100 hp, 1.8 125 hp, 1.8F 125 hp (Flexifuel), 2.0 145 hp, 2.4 140 hp, 2.4i 170 hp) and three diesel motors (1.6D 109 hp, 2.0D 136 hp, D5 180 hp). THE NEW VOLVO S40 AND V50 - MORE DYNAMIC LOOKS AND LIBERATED STORAGE SPACE

  • Increased differentiation between the S40 and V50
  • New S40 front with lower, broader stance
  • Sportier new grille creates a tougher V50 look
  • Slimmer tail lamps and new rear bumper
  • Larger and more practical storage space
  • New real wood inlay - Nordic Light Oak
  • Fresh new Spring Green upholstery

A number of distinctive design cues take the new Volvo S40 a visual step closer to the new S-range look as first shown on the all-new Volvo S80. At the same time, the V50 approaches the new V-range and the all-new V70 without compromising on its original compact and sporty attributes.

"When it comes to the exterior, we're aiming for increased differentiation between the two models. The interior refinements have focused on liberating smart storage space," says Volvo Cars Design Director Steve Mattin.

Starting with the new S40, the source of the inspiration can be seen clearly when the compact sedan is viewed from the front.

The new colour-coordinated soft nose creates a broader, lower stance thanks to a new grille with a larger Volvo iron mark, new headlamps and a lower air intake that sweeps across the entire front unlike the current model's three-part design.

"The new, lower and more horizontal appearance radiates smooth power. This impression is reinforced when the car is seen from the side. At the rear, it is the shape of the new tail lamps and the new bumper that further boost the dynamic appearance," says Steve Harper, who has been responsible for the design of the new Volvo S40 and V50.

Sportier V50 grille

The new black egg-crate grille with its larger Volvo iron mark emphasises a sporty language. The new headlamps and the three sculpted lower air intakes are other details that give the new colour-coordinated soft-nose V50 front an increased impression of solidity.

"Here, we've created visual vertical elements in order to further emphasise the new grille," says Steve Harper.

Slimmer tail lamps

The lower part of the tail lamp panel on both the S40 and V50 is 30 millimetres higher than before and the lamps themselves have an entirely new graphic layout. The brake lights are now of LED type and the position marker lamps emphasise the car's shoulders.

The new bumper features integrated reflectors in the lower corners and the lower, broader design language is supplemented with the more horizontal lines of the exhaust tailpipe.

"The improved shape and position of the exhaust tailpipes is a good example of how a little extra visual touch can create a highly potent impression," says Steve Harper.

Freeing up storage space

When refining the interior, the design team transformed itself into something of a liberation movement for storage space.

"The criticism of the current models' limited storage space served as high-octane fuel when the time came to sketch the new interior of the S40 and V50. We weren't entirely satisfied until we felt we had exploited every single available cubic centimetre in an efficient way," relates Steve Harper.

The team concentrated its efforts on two areas: the door sides and the centre stack.

The entire lower part of the front door inside panels was redesigned. The audio system loudspeakers were reshaped to free up space for a new, larger storage compartment with space for an A4 format book, an upright soft drinks can or a water bottle lying down.

As an added bonus, space was also freed up for an extra Dynaudio loudspeaker (only for Premium Sound), which adds even more spice to the audio experience.

Larger and more intelligent centre console

The already iconic super-slim centre console is available in additional decor versions such as the Nordic Light Oak real wood inlay, and the theme now flows smoothly with similar elegant soft curvature surfaces all the way to the rear seat.

The storage space between the seats has also been refined with the help of Scandinavian design tradition's most renowned hallmark - smart functionality.

The handbrake has a more compact design, which in turn has freed space for more generous storage capacity.

Sliding cover and flexible armrest

The sliding cover over the larger storage compartments, in which there are also two holders that provide secure support for large and small cups, is complemented by an improved flexible armrest for the driver. This also has a built-in feature that the design team playfully call the "hamburger table".

"We've even utilised the small spaces that are usually simply covered over when they're not housing controls for options or accessories. Now instead, the space has been converted into a handy compartment, for instance for a mobile phone. After all, the phone is not something we should be using while driving, anyway," explains Steve Harper, and adds:

"And on the back of the console there is another little jewel: a flip-up holder for a 1.5-litre bottle within easy reach of passengers in the rear-seat."

New upholstery and green highlight colour

New design details in the instrument panel and air vents also contribute to the interior refinement in the new S40 and V50.

The upholstery range has been expanded both at base level and for the more exclusive options, for instance with a new, finer grained leather. At base level there is a green ‘accent' colour fabric with the poetic name of Spring Green.

"The green upholstery is entirely in line with the increasing demand for personalised choices by our customers. We started with blue and red upholstery in the new Volvo C30, and now we are introducing green in the new S40 and V50. I'm sure it's going to be very popular," says Steve Harper.

THE NEW VOLVO S40 AND V50 - REFINED SPORTINESS AND INCREASED PREMIUM FEEL

  • Closer visual links with the larger Volvo models
  • Increasing numbers of younger buyers with high premium demands
  • Improved storage
  • Enhanced driving pleasure
  • New safety features
  • Audio system of world class
  • One-third of total sales volume

When the current generation of the Volvo S40 and V50 were introduced in 2003, Volvo Cars had its sights firmly set on younger buyers with high demands on sportiness and premium feel.

The new Volvo S40 and new Volvo V50 are making a joint entry onto the market with considerably refined design. A range of new features further sharpens their competitive edge in the hunt for discerning young car buyers.

"When the cars were introduced almost four years ago, we emphasised that they gave buyers the properties of the larger Volvo models but in a more compact format. Now we're taking this approach one step further by increasing the ‘grown-up' quality perception even more. At the same time we are accentuating the differences between the two models. The new S40 moves closer to the Volvo S80 while the new V50 is more like the new Volvo V70," says Volvo Cars President and CEO Fredrik Arp.

Fresh figures from both the US and Europe show that the company's focus on younger target groups has made a significant contribution to sales.

Buyers under 35 years up by more than 20 percent

It's the figures for the USA that are most noteworthy:

  • The proportion of S40 buyers under 35 years of age has increased from 23 percent to 45 percent.
  • The proportion of singles has risen by 10 percent, from 30 to 40 percent.
  • The overall average age of S40 customers has dropped by ten years from 50 to 40.

"What is more, the reasons for choosing the S40 are much more emotional than before. Today's buyers speak enthusiastically of its sporty design and driving pleasure. We're also increasingly winning the image and prestige match against our toughest competitors," reveals Fredrik Arp.

In Europe, the proportion of V50 buyers whose main alternative was a premium car such as the large German makes is now touching 47 percent - compared with 24 percent for the previous Volvo V40.

The proportion of customers younger than 44 years has risen by ten percent from 45 to 55 percent. And in Europe too, it is the more emotional reasons for purchase that are gaining ground among V50 buyers, more of whom are families with children than in the case of the S40.

Improved storage

Both design and technical refinements in the new Volvo S40 and V50 focused on improving the models' already highly appreciated characteristics and on tackling weaknesses identified by customers, for instance when it comes to interior storage space.

"The design team exploited every available cubic centimetre in an intelligent way. The all-new design of the centre console and the door inside panels, for instance, has increased storage capacity and added even greater flexibility to the interior," explains Fredrik Arp.

Sharper driveline range

The driving characteristics are already among the most renowned strengths of the two models.

One new feature is that the T5 engine gets a performance hike of 10 horsepower, giving an output of 230 hp. There are also five other petrol engine versions available, plus a bio-ethanol Flexifuel variant:

  • 1.6 100 hp
  • 1.8 125 hp
  • 1.8F 125 hp (Flexifuel)
  • 2.0 145 hp
  • 2.4 140 hp
  • 2.4i 170 hp

Diesel engines, which account for 55 percent of S40 and V50 sales in Europe and 25 percent in total, are available in three versions:

  • 1.6D 109 hp
  • 2.0D 136 hp
  • D5 180 hp

One change here is that during the second half of 2007 the D5 engine will also be available with a manual gearbox, offering the driver no less than 400 Nm of torque compared with the automatic transmission's 350 Nm. This engine is one of the first to meet the expected Euro 5 European exhaust emission levels.

The E85-powered (85 percent ethanol, 15 percent petrol) Flexifuel variant producing 125 hp is becoming increasingly competitive. The Volvo S40 and V50 Flexifuel are sold in nine European countries and in 2007 account for 8 percent of these models' total sales.

Now with active headlights

When it comes to safety, the new S40 and V50 come with several new features:

  • Optional Active Bi-Xenon headlamps that swivel the light beam in the direction of the road when the driver turns the steering wheel.
  • The car's hazard warning flashers are automatically activated when the airbags are deployed, a feature that helps attract the attention of other motorists in the event of a single-vehicle accident in the dark, for instance.
  • The brake lights now have the EBL (Emergency Brake Lights) function, which causes them to flash rapidly when the driver stamps hard on the brake pedal, so as to effectively alert traffic behind the car.

Audio system of world class

The new Volvo S40 and V50 can be specified with an audio system of absolute world class.

The most advanced of the three systems, Premium Sound, has a digital amplifier from Alpine, Dolby® Pro Logic II Surround and loudspeakers from Dynaudio of Denmark.

In the High Performance and Premium Sound systems it is possible to play CD discs with music in MP3 or WMA format. This means that the CD changer can store several hundred music tracks and give the owner access to his or her own private home music library even while on the move.

What is more, all the audio systems now come with an extra socket (AUX) for connection of other equipment such as a portable MP3 player. USB and iPod connectors are available as accessories.

One-third of total Volvo Cars sales

The sales target for the new Volvo S40 is 75,000 cars per year.

The USA is the largest single market with one-third of total sales, while in 2007 China will advance to second place owing to local production of about 8,000 Volvo S40s. The United Kingdom, Spain, Germany and Sweden are the largest S40 markets in Europe.

The target for the new Volvo V50 is 70,000 cars annually. Here 85 percent of sales are in Europe, with Germany, Sweden, Britain,Italy and the Netherlands being the largest individual markets.

"The Volvo S40 and V50 not only account for one-third of our total sales volume in 2007; they also play a vital role in reinforcing the Volvo brand. The new models sharpen their competitiveness in every important area and I am convinced that together with the new C30, they will attract even more new and younger buyers," says Fredrik Arp.

Nearly a decade after Mercedes premiered the coupe & roadster Vision SLR Concepts which was followed by the production version of the SLR McLaren Coupe, the German company has finally decided to put the roadster into production. Mercedes has already confirmed that the SLR McLaren Roadster will be unveiled this summer with the first cars being delivered to their owners in early 2008 and these are the first production-ready pictures of the car, courtesy of Caranddriver.

To keep the weight down Mercedes seems to have decided to fit its super-roadster with a soft-top but it’s still unclear whether it’ll get scissor-type doors. As for performance, although nothings sure yet, rumors have it that the Roadster will get the revised 5.4-liter supercharged V8 of the 722 Special Edition that delivers 650Hp (vs 626Hp of the stock version).
