Allegedly, this Lexus RX was parked illegally so the Russian authorities took care of the problem in there own unorthodox way -or at least that’s what the guys at “englishrussia” claim. Truth is however, we don’t give much credit to the scenario as this looks to be a brand new Lexus RX - it’s still covered with the protective plastic wrap! So we’re guessing maybe it was confiscated and destroyed by the police or someone with a camera simply got lucky and saw the Russian mafia in action... It’s Sunday, I’ve been stuck inside all day mucking around with my PC –boy, do I need a vacation…, and among other things, I surfed the net in search of a new desktop wallpaper which led me to BMW’s North American site. Before I take a desperately needed break and head off to the beach, I though I’d share with you these artistically gorgeous wallpapers featuring the new 135i Coupe. In all, there are 8 different wallpapers of the new Bavarian compact coupe, available in these dimensions: 800x600, 1024x768, 1152x870, 1280x1024 and 1680x1280. Now if you’ll excuse me, I think I’ll take off! -Follow the jump for the comprehensive wallpaper gallery

Jeez, some kids are capable of wonders, aren’t they... Like this 11-year-old girl from Cantonmont Florida, who led cops on an 8-mile chase going 100mph (160 km/h) through the resort town of Orange beach. The vehicle sideswiped another car and flipped over on the side of the road. When cops approached the flipped car with guns drawn they found a “sweet and innocent” little girl inside who suffered from a few scrapes, bruises and alcohol breath. That’s right, she was drunk! Not much information was released about the girl because she is a minor but one of the officers did say that she had enough alcohol in her system that she could have been charged with a DUI even if she had been an adult!

BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar, Lexus and now Infiniti. Don’t you just love modern day communism? Right… Nevertheless, China’s considered the land of opportunity for any car maker (or any “maker” for that matter) so it was only logical that Infiniti would rush into one of the world’s most prominent markets.

Infiniti’s first authorized dealer, dubbed “Shanghai Yongda Infiniti” started its sales in China from July 1st. The first models available in the Chinese market are the G35 sedan and FX35/45 SUV. G35 Base is priced at RMB448,000 ($59.000 or €43.000), G35 Premium at RMB478,000 ($63.000 or €46.200), while FX35 Base is priced at RMB638,000 ($84.000 or €61.600) and FX35 Top at RBM678,000 ($89.200 or €65.500) and FX45 Top at RMB808,000 ($106.300 or €78.000). -Continued after the jump

During the grand opening of the Shanghai dealership, Nissan Motors Corporate Vice President, Yasuaki Hashimoto said, “The China business is crucial for Infiniti’s global expansion and the smooth implementation of Nissan Value-Up”

“Infiniti has been well received in the marketplace thanks to its vibrant design, exhilarating performance, modern luxury experience and premium quality, as well as its Total Ownership Experience customer care philosophy,” said Yasuaki Hashimoto. “Infiniti’s worldwide customers are innovative, ambitious and successful people. We are also expecting many of the same kind of customers in China. Cumulative Infiniti global sales have so far topped 1,100,000 units. Today, we are so excited to see that Infiniti has taken a major step forward in China. We hope that Infiniti can achieve great success in this market."

Why must people insist on destroying and defacing innocent cars? Take this pulled apart 2006 Mustang that’s up for auction on E-bay. By pulled apart we mean, it’s in four pieces. The owner says that it can be disassembled in about 2 minutes but it’s pretty worthless unless your using it for promotional or entertainment value. This “transformer” Stang was specially built for the last running production show "headlights and tailpipes" featuring numerous custom cars and starring Playboy bunnies at the Stardust casino in Las Vegas before implosion.

Here’s an idea, save your money and hire a clown at your next party. And for god’s sake, leave the Mustang in one piece! -More pictures after the jump

eBay: The Milwaukee Batmobile!

Holy priceless collection of Etruscan snoods! Who’d ever think that Milwaukee-kee sub-zero temperatures could make a man loose it and create this freak of a Batmobile! Poor car, I feel sorry for it; I mean, as if being a 70’s Oldsmobile 98 Convertible isn’t one burden too many, having to wear this pitiful tranny Batman outfit, phwee… And just in case you want to see the replica in all its glory we've added a video featuring the Milwaukee Batmobile with the King of customs himself, George Barris, admiring it -we think... -Continued: Click "Read More..." below for the video and the image gallery

You’ve seen it and you like it a lot but the question is, if it were to be imported to the States, would you actually go ahead and sign a check to buy Fiat’s retro styled Nuovo 500? Although this is based on pure speculations, think of a price range between $12k and $19k. Moreover, just to set things into perspective, we’re talking about an intermediate alternative to sub-compact cars like the tiny Smart Fortwo, Honda Jazz, Toyota Yaris and the more upscale VW Beetle and MINI and not to larger or sportier cars in the same price range. Tell us what you think. -See the Fiat 500 here

Here’s a great driving scene from Fox Network’s TV series, “John Doe” starring Dominic Purcell. In a few words, the series is about the life of John Doe, a mystifying man who possesses knowledge of literally everything in the world yet has no memory of who, or even what, he is. In this clip, which is dubbed in Italian, John Doe "learns..." how to drive a Shelby Cobra 427 like a pro on the streets of Seattle.

Mostly known for its extreme conversions on BMW models like the M5 based CLR 500RS, Lumma Design surprised us with its overly subtle optic package for the E92 BMW 3-Series Coupe. Thus meaning forget about orange-clockwork paintwork schemes and 10-inch fenders.

Instead, Lumma equipped the 3-Coupe with a front spoiler on the lower part of the bumper, carbon fiber mirror caps and grille lining, headlight “eyelashes” and a discreet rear spoiler. Add the 19-inch rims in 235 rubber along with the Lumma-Design badges and there you have it: the complete exterior pack! Kitsch fans will probably also feel disappointed with Lumma’s offerings for the interior since options are limited to a set of floor mats and aluminum pedals/footrest. According to the guys at the NASIOC forums who broke the story, Ernie Boch of Subaru New England in Massachusetts had the idea for the Tribeca Limo which he then passed onto Subie execs in Japan. General Motors introduced today Friday, July 6, the all-new 2008 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid at the Major League Baseball All-Star Fan Zone in San Francisco, California. The first-ever Malibu Hybrid is equipped with a 36-volt electric motor/generator mated to GM Powertrain’s 167Hp 2.4L four-cylinder engine and Hydra-Matic 4T45 four-speed transmission. GM’s Hybrid system reduces fuel consumption by:

  • Shutting off the engine when the vehicle is stopped, to minimize idling
  • Restarting the engine swiftly when the brake pedal is released
  • Enabling early fuel shut-off during vehicle deceleration
  • Capturing vehicle kinetic energy during deceleration through regenerative braking to charge the advanced nickel metal hydride battery
  • Performing intelligent battery charging when it is most efficient

According to GM, the Malibu Hybrid delivers an EPA rating of 24 mpg city and 32 mpg highway which accounts to a two-mpg increase over the non-hybrid four-cylinder model. The Malibu Hybrid’s production is scheduled to begin in October with the first vehicles arriving in dealerships shortly thereafter. -Press Release, specs and images after the jump

PRESS RELEASE: All-New 2008 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid Debuts at Major League Baseball's All-Star Game

Malibu Hybrid production begins in October, available at dealerships soon after

SAN FRANCISCO – The all-new 2008 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid will join baseball’s other stars as it makes its world debut in the All-Star Fan Zone today. The Malibu Hybrid’s appearance continues through the last out of one of MLB’s highlights of the year.

Thanks to an affordable hybrid powertrain option, the all-new 2008 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid not only will be the most refined new midsize sedan in the neighborhood, but one of the most fuel-efficient, as well. Powered by the GM Hybrid System, the first-ever Malibu Hybrid delivers an EPA rating of 24 mpg city and 32 mpg highway – a two-mpg increase over the non-hybrid four-cylinder model – and will be Chevrolet value-priced, offering customers an affordable hybrid choice.

“The beauty of the Chevy Malibu Hybrid is that customers don’t have to choose between a stylish, expressive, fuel-saving sedan full of standard content and the gasoline that goes in the tank,” said Chevrolet General Manager Ed Peper. “The Malibu Hybrid‘s winning package of uncompromising design and fuel economy will help us assert leadership in the midsize sedan segment and meet the needs of Chevy customers.”

Production of the Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid is scheduled to begin in October, with vehicles arriving in dealerships shortly thereafter. The system will be available as a powertrain option on the base LS model, which also features Electric Power Steering, Automatic Climate Control and the StabiliTrak electronic stability control system.

The GM Hybrid system featured on the Malibu Hybrid saves fuel by using sophisticated controls and software, as well as a unique, 36-volt electric motor/generator mated to GM Powertrain’s 2.4L Ecotec VVT four-cylinder engine and Hydra-Matic 4T45 four-speed transmission. The GM Hybrid system maintains the vehicle’s sporty feel and seamlessly reduces fuel consumption by:

Shutting off the engine when the vehicle is stopped, to minimize idling
Restarting the engine promptly when the brake pedal is released
Enabling early fuel shut-off during vehicle deceleration
Capturing vehicle kinetic energy during deceleration through regenerative braking to charge the advanced nickel metal hydride battery
Performing intelligent battery charging when it is most efficient

The GM Hybrid system provides additional power, when required, during launch from the electric motor/generator. At wide-open throttle, such as during a passing maneuver, the system enhances acceleration by using the motor/generator to bolster the gasoline engine and achieve maximum power.

The GM Hybrid system also is designed to automatically maintain full accessory functionality – including climate control – when the vehicle is stopped, so that hybrid operation is seamless to the driver and passengers. The Malibu Hybrid delivers an appropriate balance of fuel economy and cabin comfort with an air conditioning system with two selectable modes. The Hybrid A/C mode favors more fuel-efficient performance by limiting the draw on the hybrid powertrain, while the normal mode provides maximum passenger comfort in hot climates and enhances defogging performance.

Malibu Hybrid models make a statement away from the gas pump, too, thanks to specific exterior appointments such as 16-inch low rolling resistance tires and unique hybrid badging. Inside, a special gauge cluster provides information and feedback about the hybrid powertrain’s operation.

The 2008 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid is covered by GM’s five-year / 100,000-mile powertrain warranty, the most comprehensive in the industry. In addition, the Malibu Hybrid’s advanced nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery pack is covered by an eight-year / 100,000-mile warranty.

Thank you ABT, if you don’t mind I think I’ll just go now and deposit my mini wursts in the dunny… Nein, nein and nein again. What’s with the kitsch bi-colour body paint anyway? Phwee… Bypassing ABT’s AS5 Harlequin outfit, the German tuner’s proposition for the 2008 Audi A5 includes an exterior package consisting of a front skirt with a grid element which emphasizes the single-frame grill and the fog lights, rear spoiler, gill-shaped air-inlets, rear skirt inset in diffuser optics and the 4-pipe rear muffler. Finishing off with the exterior, ABT offers the AR wheel, which is available for the A5 in the sizes from 18 to 20 inch, of course together with appropriate sport tires. -Continued: Click the title above or “Read More...” below

For the moment, the only version of the A5 that’s available with an engine upgrade kit is the 3.0TDI, however, ABT promises to broaden its offerings shortly. Thanks to the improved motor management, the 3.0-liter turbodiesel’s output has increased by 32Hp to 272Hp. If your pocket allows it, you can add an extra ABT turbo charger that lifts power to 300Hp. ABT backs the engine mods with an adjustable sports suspension and a new brake with a disc diameter of 380 millimeters.

They just won’t let it go, will they? What if every Chinese car tested by Germany’s ADAC has miserably failed at the crash tests; who cares! Just keep bringing them in and at some point we’ll accept them. Following the Landwind SUV and the Brilliance BS6 Sedan, next up from China is the Shuanghuan Sceo SUV that will be distributed by a new French car dealer named “AZ Motors”. The latter announced that it has been appointed as distributor of the Chinese 4x4 in France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

However, with the Sceo, safety isn’t the only thing Europeans should be worried about as you don’t need the imagination of J.K. Rowling to see that Shuanghuan’s SUV is inspired from the previous generation BMW X5 with a touch of Toyota Land Cruiser up front. We might find it hilarious, but we’re sure as hell that BMW execs aren’t finding this at all funny… -Continued: Click “Read More…” below

A Bentley turned Hyundai? Oh the horror! The owner of this Continental GT has somehow professionally applied Hyundai badges on the trunk lid, center cap of each wheel and the hood. I’m sure Bentley isn’t finding any humor in this. But one thing’s for sure, the people over at Hyundai went home today with an enlarged ego. Tonight they will dream of Hyundai’s with Bentley-esque designs for their upcoming Elantra model. Surprised? So are we. While most of us were expecting Fiat to unveil the turbocharged version of its 500 minicar at next year’s Geneva Show, yesterday, during the worldwide media presentation in Torino, Italy, Fiat Automobile’s CEO (not Fiat Group) Luca De Meo, announced that the 500 Abarth will make its public appearance at the forthcoming Tokyo Show this October!

We talked to several journalists that attended the media presentation in Torino, but unfortunately no one managed to dig out any information concerning the Abarth’s powertrain. We suspect though that the rang-topping 500 will wear the Grande Punto’s 1.4-liter turbocharged unit that’s available in 120Hp and 150Hp guises. Check out a video featuring a prototype 500 Abarth at the Nurburgring race track here.

These days Marbella has become the epicentre of M3 fans as BMW has chosen the beautiful seaside city in Andalusia, Spain, to perform the presentation of the 420Hp coupe to journalists. Yes, some guys have all the luck; sunny days, Mediterranean beaches, free food and hotels, beautiful Spanish women, a dozen or so E92 M3s and the chance to take the most desirable bimmer of the year for a spin at the Ascari racetrack, located not far from Marbella in a secluded valley in Ronda.

Thankfully (?), we can get a wisp of what’s going on there as a member of the Spanish forum “BMW Faq” managed to snap a few shots of the M3 along with a 6,5 min long video. Even though the drivers seemed a bit restricted, you can just imagine what’s going to happen at Ascari… I’m depressed right now, I think I’ll just crawl into bed and stay there all day. -Pictures after the jump

Chinese automaker, Great Wall, is at it again. This time, they’re knocking off our beloved “robots in disguise”, The Transformers, in order to promote their own knock off vehicles. With the opening of the new Transformers movie, what better way to show off the Chinese copy-cat skills than to make some knock off robots and match them with profiles, silly names and their own “original vehicles”. Take for example “Florida” which transforms into a 3.91 meter tall robot from a knock of Toyota. But after we learned that this particular robot “identifies most with Paris Hilton”, we completely lost all respect. Other fake-o characters include Perry, i7 and Coolbear. Beware for those knock-off Chinese Transformers because ultimately, they are “less than meets the eye.”

We’re probably about 99% sure on the accuracy on the inside info on this BMW 1-Series Cabrio. If it were anything less we wouldn’t even have bothered sharing… follow the jump to see what we mean. As you can see from the spy photos that we took a few months ago, the 1-Series Coupe’s roofless alter ego will be fitted with a conventional canvas top just like the 6-Series Cabriolet and in contrast to the 3-Series Cabriolet, which is equipped with an electric folding hard-top. Although there’s no official information, we suspect that BMW preferred the soft-top to a hardtop not only because it’s quite cheaper but also because the canvas roof takes up less space from the boot.

Power is likely to come from the same range of engines as known from the 1-Series Coupe, which means, a 230Hp 3.0-litre petrol unit for the 128i, a 306Hp twin turbo 3.0-litre petrol engine for the 130i and in Europe, a 177Hp 2.0-litre turbodiesel for the 120d and a 204Hp 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel for the 123d. We expect the 1-Series Cabriolet to go on sale shortly after its premiere at the 2008 Geneva Show in March. -Continued: Click “Read More…” below

We know that this part is off-topic, but we think some of you will find it interesting.

Patiently waiting to see the light of day, the 1-Series Cabriolet and Coupe scoop images weren’t the only things lying around on our desktop the past few months. We had also written an article to accompany the pics, but due to the numerous rumors about the upcoming 2 door 1-Series we hesitated since we weren’t sure what to believe. So, we decided to disclose both. Confused? Read the article below that we wrote several months ago and you’ll understand.

Question of the Day: BMW 1-Series Coupe & Cabrio or just plain Coupe-Cabrio?

We have to admit that we’re kind of confused with this one. During a one-on-one chitchat with a high-rank BMW official we were led to believe that there will only be one version of the 2door 1-Series when the car goes on sale in 2008: a Coupe-Cabrio with an electric folding hardtop. With the curious minds that we have, we also asked a PR who categorically confirmed the fact.

Theoretically, two ultra-reliable sources should be enough to break a story, but since we have a true love affair with “buts” (and butts, but that’s another story…) we contacted an inside source of ours that hasn’t proved us wrong up to now when it comes to BMW’s. Guess what; he claimed that to his knowledge, BMW will present two versions: a 1-Series Coupe and a 1-Series Cabriolet with a soft-top!

You know how they say if everyone in China jumped at the same time it would cause an earthquake? Well, with a population of 1.3 billion people, anything that everyone does in China will have some sort of affect on the rest of the world. The process has begun in Beijing where authorities are planning to conduct a trial period that consists of keeping one million cars off the road to test the effect on population.

One million of Beijing’s cars represent about 1/3 of the vehicles on the road in that city. The trial is going to last for two weeks, from August 7th-20th. This test is being conducted in plans for the upcoming 2008 Olympics in Beijing to see whether it’s worth limiting the amount of traffic on the road for the Olympic period. We’d agree this is a step into the right direction for China since, according to analysts, China could overtake the US this year as the worlds largest emitter of greenhouse gases.

Ever wonder what the cops and customs agents do with all the confiscated drugs and alcohol? I always had a sneaking suspicion that they just using it for their own personal fun, but in Sweden, alcohol that is seized by customs officials are being turned in bio-gas. Customs spokesperson Ingrid Jerlebrink said that ”We used to just pour it down the drain, but because of the increased volumes we had to look around for new solutions.”

The transition process helps to fuel the country’s public transportation system. Last year 184 gallons or 700.000 litres (!) of confiscated booze was transferred into fuel for over 1,000 buses, Lorries and one bio-gas train. The process includes heating the alcohol and turning it into bio-gas. Its good to know the authorities aren’t having crazy booze fests back at the station and they’re using the loot for better causes.

General Motors announced today the introduction of the Holden Commodore based, Chevrolet Omega in the Brazilian market. Evidently, the word “based” is an understatement because the only visible difference between the Chevy and its down-under stable mate is restricted to the bowtie in the grille. While American consumers will have to wait until early 2008 to get a taste of the RWD Australian sedan via the Pontiac G8, the Chevrolet Omega will go on sale in Brazil this August where it will be available with GM’s 250Hp 3.6-liter V6 unit.

For those unfamiliar with the Brazilian market, the current Chevrolet Omega is a rebadged version of the previous Holden Commodore. GM decided to import the Omega from Australia in 1999 after the original Chevrolet Omega based on the Opel Omega A and built locally between 1992 and 1998, ceased production. -More pictures after the jump

If you’ve been following our readings, you’ll know that we’re not exactly the bling-bling or fast & furious types when it comes to tuning. And luckily, Kelleners Sport’s proposition for BMW’s best selling model falls in neither category. The subtle, yet distinct aerodynamic kit consist of a front spoiler, side mirrors, side sills as well as a roof and rear spoiler. The exterior package is completed with a set of Kelleners Sport 19-inch 'vegas 2' alloy wheels in four finishes (black matt, black sheen, gun metal sheen and silver sheen), in sizes 8.5 x 19 (front, tires 235/35) and 9.5 x 19 (rear, tires 265/30).

Depending on the depth of you wallet you can upgrade the suspension components with different struts while Kelleners Sport also offer a larger brake system for increased stopping power. Finally, there’s an engine kit for the 330i that boosts power to 306 Hp (stock: 258Hp) and top speed to 278 km/h – 173mph (stock: 250 km/h – 155mph). -Image Gallery after the jump

In case people started putting the Splash out of their mind, Suzuki decided to liberate a revised version of the latest press release and while they were at it, they threw in a bunch of new images included one with the interior which is 100% identical to the one found in its Opel clone, the '08 Agila. Both cars will be built at Suzuki’s European factory in Esztergom, Hungary.

Back to the Splash, based on a 30 mm shorter wheelbase version of the Swift’s platform, it will rival cars like the Fiat Panda and the forthcoming Hyundai i10 (Atos). Suzuki Motor Corporation, the world leader in the compact car segment, introduces Splash, an all-new compact model aimed at building on the success of the loveable Swift. Following Swift, Grand Vitara and SX4, Splash is the fourth all new Suzuki model within just three years, and it epitomises Suzuki’s ‘Way of Life!’ philosophy, underpinning its strategy of building cars that excite customers all over the world.

Splash for Europe will be built in Esztergom, Hungary, by Magyar Suzuki Corporation, a Suzuki subsidiary that already builds Swift, SX4 and Ignis. Suzuki will also be manufacturing the second generation Agila for Opel/Vauxhall at this plant. With identical engineering, the main visual differences between Splash and Agila include different styling at front (bonnet, wings, headlamps and bumper) and rear (tailgate, tail lights and bumper).

Suzuki is targeting annual sales of approximately 60,000 units throughout Europe. Opened in 1992, the Esztergom factory has produced over one million Suzukis to date.

Splash cannot be considered to be the successor of the Wagon R+, the enlarged version of the Wagon R which in 1993 was originally developed for the Japanese market, and later also introduced in Europe. “Based on completely different criteria, Splash’s design is mainly tailored to the requirements of European customers,” explains Toshihiro Suzuki, the project’s Chief Engineer. Splash comes with attractive styling, compact dimensions, responsive handling, very good build quality and a high degree of environmental compatibility.

While the focus of Phase One of Suzuki’s “World-Strategy” was on sportiness, Splash is the first model in Phase Two which will focus on young families as its main target group. Apart from fresh and sporty styling, young couples with and without children attach great importance to attributes such as spaciousness, flexibility and economy.

Rather than a purely functional box shape, the designers have endeavoured to provide Splash with styling that lives up to its name, epitomising youthfulness, freshness and zesty, energetic performance.

Styling and the design philosophy

The styling team for Splash was headed by Akira Kamio (44), who also played a big part in the styling of Swift. As early as 2003, he began to analyse the necessary characteristics for a future European mini-MPV.

It soon became clear that whilst it should not look like a shrunken version of a full-sized MPV this car must keep all of its advantages: the high seating position and resulting good all-round visibility, the pleasant feeling of space and great flexibility allowing the rear compartment to be easily turned into a substantial stowage space.

In order to get up-to-date information, a group of 10 Suzuki designers from Japan travelled to Germany in January, 2004 to spend a period of six months there. They analysed European trends in cars, fashion, lifestyle and design.

Out of their impressions and findings, they finally distilled three models, which, in so called ‘car clinics’, were then presented to audiences of owners of compact cars and small MPVs. In the end, these audiences favoured the model offering the optimum combination of dynamic sportiness with youthful styling, implying a positive attitude to life and maximum suitability for everyday and recreational use.

At the Paris Motor Show in late September 2006, Suzuki presented ‘Project Splash’, a concept car showcasing a taste of the styling of the future production-version Splash. The extremely positive response of the audience confirmed to Akira Kamio and his team that they had taken the right path for Splash. One thing is certain: Splash will be a major player in the mini-MPV segment. While ideally suited to tight parking conditions, the 3.72 m-long car nevertheless offers sufficient space for up to five occupants plus plenty of sports and leisure equipment.

Apart from attractive styling, a cute minicar also requires the best engineering. This includes safe and precise handling, outstanding ride comfort, a high degree of environmental compatibility, and optimum passive and active safety. Hence Splash uses a 30 mm shorter wheelbase version of the Swift’s platform, Suzuki’s current best seller.

The chassis, steering and brakes were adapted to the new parameters in extensive tests, which included tens of thousands of miles of testing over various types of European roads, from English cobblestones, through twisty southern Spanish tracks to fast German autobahns.

Choice of three engines

Splash will make its debut at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September, with sales commencing in Spring, 2008. Customers will have the choice of three engines – two petrol and a diesel. The petrol units are 100% Suzuki designs, a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder unit producing 65 PS (48 kW) and a 1.2-litre 4-cylinder engine developing 86 PS (63 kW). Both are of advanced four-valve-per-cylinder design, offering a sophisticated combination of smoothness, low-end torque and fuel efficiency.

Diesel fans can choose the 1.3-litre common-rail direct injection engine available with a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter). Producing 75 PS (55 kW), this 4-cylinder unit is manufactured by Suzuki at its new diesel engine plant in India under licence from Fiat Group Automobiles.

All three engines are combined with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The 86 PS petrol version can also be ordered with a 4-speed automatic transmission. Given the stricter standards now being demanded with respect to environmental compatibility, all engines are Euro4-compliant, with CO2 emissions between 120 and 140 g/km in combination with manual transmissions.

Safety

Suzuki has paid great attention to safety measures in the design of Splash. Active safety features include ABS, brake assist, electronic brake-force distribution and ESP. Passive safety features include six airbags (dual front side and curtain airbags), a crash-optimised, rigid passenger cell, plus seatbelt-force limiters and seatbelt pretensioners for the front seats. For enhanced pedestrian protection the front end of Splash is fitted with energy-absorbing structures carscoop.

Following up on our morning post on the 2008 C 63 AMG here’s the official press release along with all 22 high-res images of Mercedes’ new sports sedan. In a nutshell, the C63 AMG is equipped with a normally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 engine that delivers 457Hp and 600 Nm of maximum torque. Accordingly, the C 63 AMG accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62mph) in 4.5 sec, while its top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155mph) meaning that Mercedes’ proposition in the super sport sedan category is stronger and faster than its archrivals, Audi RS4 and BMW M3. Of course in no way does that mean its better but it’s a start. See the detailed press release and the high-res pics after the jump. -Click “Read More…” below

PRESS RELEASE: Affalterbach – In the German Touring Car Championships (DTM) the new AMG C-Class ensures exciting motor racing at the highest level, and now its roadgoing sister model is celebrating its debut: the new C 63 AMG. Its AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine develops a peak output of 336 kW/457 hp and a maximum torque of 600 newton metres – unrivalled figures in this segment. Accordingly the C 63 AMG accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds, while its top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. In conjunction with an all-new front axle, speed-sensitive AMG sports steering and the new, 3-stage ESP Ã’, the AMG sports suspension ensures both outstanding driving enjoyment and exemplary handling dynamics. A combination of expressive design, a decidedly sporty interior and a high level of everyday practicality makes the C 63 AMG a unique high-performance car. The market launch will commence in early 2008.

With the new C 63 AMG, Mercedes-AMG GmbH is making a confident statement to mark the 40th birthday of the company. The new V8 flagship model is now the fifth generation of the AMG C-Class, whose family tree goes back to the C 36 AMG of 1993 – the very first vehicle developed as a cooperative venture between Daimler-Benz and AMG.

Merely the appearance of the C 63 AMG is impressive enough, with its wide, road-hugging stance. The new bonnet with its prominent power domes conceals the independently developed AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine, which develops a fulminating 336 kW/457 hp at 6800 rpm from a displacement of 6208 cubic centimetres. In this respect the C 63 AMG comes very close to the 470 or so horsepower delivered by the AMG C-Class racing touring car in the DTM series. This high output also benefits the power-to-weight ratio, which is a very favourable 3.6 kg/hp.

The torque developed by the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine need fear no comparison either. The maximum of 600 newton metres at 5000 rpm is unrivalled in this class, and the torque curve is equally impressive: from 2000 to 6250 rpm the driver always has more than 500 newton metres on tap – ideal for powerful acceleration in any engine speed range.

V8 with thoroughbred racing technology and a designer exhaust note

Introduced in 2005, the V8 engine is installed in numerous AMG high-performance cars and excels with its thoroughbred motor sports technology.

Perfect cylinder charging is guaranteed by the vertical arrangement of the intake and exhaust ducts, as well as the magnesium variable intake manifold with two integral throttle flaps. Other high-tech features include variable camshaft adjustment, four-valve technology with bucket-type tappets, a particularly rigid aluminium crankcase of closed-deck design and the low-friction TWAS coating on the cylinder contact surfaces.

Among the particular strengths of the AMG V8 engine are outstanding responsiveness and enormous pulling power – by virtue of its large displacement, it develops over 30 percent more torque than comparable engines in this performance class. Electronically controlled fuel delivery is another reason for the outstanding agility and responsiveness to movements of the accelerator. With its sporty AMG sound, which was designed-in during a series of sophisticated trials, this eight-cylinder powerpack from Affalterbach offers the unique excitement of a fast-revving, naturally aspirated engine – an audible and immediate experience whether at low, medium or high engine speeds.

Key figures for the C 63 AMG at a glance:

  • Cylinder arrangement/ valves per cylinder-V8/ 4
  • Displacement -6208 cc
  • Bore/stroke -102.2/94.6 mm
  • Compression ratio-11.3 : 1
  • Output -336/457 kW/hp @ 6800 rpm
  • Max. torque -600 @ 5000 rpm
  • Acceleration 0-100 km/h -4.5 s
  • Top speed -250 km/h *Electronically governed

In the interests of optimal reliability, the C 63 AMG has a particularly efficient water cooling system and large engine and transmission oil coolers. Located behind the large apertures in the AMG front apron, these coolers ensure non-critical operating temperatures at all times – even under the extreme stress of the racetrack.

Like all AMG high-performance engines, the AMG 6.3-litre V8 is built in the AMG engine shop on the traditional "one man, one engine" principle. This means that one technician is responsible for hand-assembling a complete V8 engine to the highest quality standards – which is attested to by his signature on the AMG engine plate.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC with blipping function

This high-performance eight-cylinder engine has the perfect partner in the form of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC transmission. Equipped with AMG steering wheel shift paddles and three driving modes, the seven-speed automatic transmission allows a decidedly sporty or more comfort-oriented style of driving according to the driver’s preference. The different modes - "S" (Sport), " C" (Comfort) and "M" (Manual) differ in their shift characteristics and speed: gearshifts in "S" mode are around 30 percent faster than in "C", and no less than around 50 percent faster in "M" mode. Pressing a button is sufficient to activate the desired driving programme.

The new C 63 AMG is the very first AMG car to feature an automatic throttle-blipping function during downshifts. This not only enhances the driver’s emotional experience – the almost completely jolt-free downshifting process also reduces the load-change responses and has a particularly positive effect when braking before bends on the racetrack.

Redesigned front axle with 35-millimetre wider track

The C 63 AMG owes its outstanding handling dynamics to the AMG sports suspension and an all-new three-link front axle design. The stiff configuration of the springs and gas-pressure shock absorbers ensures optimal road contact and low body movements when negotiating serpentine bends at speed. The new front axle has a 35-millimetre wider track – visible by the more widely flared wheel arches – and therefore ensures lower dynamic wheel loads when cornering. A number of features make for substantially more stability and precision in all driving situations: the redesigned wheel location at the front axle is 100 percent more rigid, leading to a considerable improvement in steering precision. Another benefit makes itself felt when braking, as the new wheel location ensures an immediate response even under high dynamic stresses.

In combination with completely newly configured elasto-kinematics, the new wheel location provides greatly improved lateral dynamics and allows the driver of the C 63 AMG to benefit from significantly higher cornering speeds. A larger torsion bar stabiliser, new head bearings and dampers with rebound buffer springs further enhance this stability and precision. Steering feedback is also improved by the new kinematics. The speed-sensitive AMG sports steering has a ratio of 13.5:1, but feels more direct as a result of moving what is termed the instant centre of motion at the front axle. A more rigid Hardy disc in the steering column, as well as modified steering characteristics, make a further contribution to increased precision.

The multi-link independent rear suspension has also been thoroughly re-engineered, with a twelve-millimetre wider track and more camber leading to improved cornering performance. Reinforced drive shafts and drive joints increase fatigue strength and round off the improvements to the rear suspension of the C 63 AMG.

The completely newly developed AMG sports suspension combines outstanding handling dynamics with the long-distance comfort to be expected of a Mercedes – which also means that the C 63 AMG has the characteristic virtues of a genuine AMG.

18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels, 19-inch wheel/tyre combination on request

The C 63 AMG is appropriately fitted with new, 18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels in a five-spoke design. Painted in titanium grey, these high-sheen wheels in size 8.0 x 18 and 8.5 x 18 are shod with wide-base tyres in size 235/40 R 18 (front) and 255/35 R 18 (rear). Even more dynamic handling is made possible by the optionally available 19-inch AMG light-alloy wheels in a multi-spoke design. The front wheels are in size 8.0 x 19 with 235/35 tyres, with 9.0 x 19 wheels and 255/30 R 19 tyres at the rear.

Generously dimensioned AMG high-performance braking system

Internally ventilated and perforated disc brakes all-round reside behind the spokes of the AMG wheels. The front brakes have size 360 x 36-millimetre discs with six-piston fixed callipers, while deceleration at the rear is by 330 x 26-millimetre discs with four-piston fixed callipers. The AMG high-performance braking system is characterised by great sensitivity and high fade-resistance.

3-stage ESPÃ’ with Sport function as a new feature in the C 63 AMG

The Electronic Stability Program ESPÃ’ is specifically configured for the dynamic performance of the C 63 AMG, which is the first AMG model to feature the 3-stage ESPÃ’ with a Sport function. This system offers three different control settings, and is a logical further development of the AMG ESPÃ’ philosophy. The ESP key in the centre console enables the driver to choose between three modes - "ESP ON", "ESP SPORT" and "ESP OFF" – the currently active mode is shown in the central display of the AMG instrument cluster.

In "ESP ON" mode, the onset of handling instability leads to braking intervention at one or more of the wheels, accompanied by a reduction in engine torque. Briefly pressing the ESP key activates "ESP SPORT". In this mode the braking intervention to counter oversteer or understeer, as well as the accompanying reduction in engine torque, allows a higher dynamic threshold and, for instance, corresponding drift angles – which means that the driver of the C 63 AMG benefits from considerably more active driving pleasure. ESP Ã’ is restored to its normal function as soon as the brake pedal is operated.

Prolonged pressure on the ESP key activates "ESP OFF". There is no intervention to control the handling dynamics, and no reduction in engine torque – thus increasing driving enjoyment even further. "ESP OFF" should only be used by experienced drivers on dedicated racetracks. In this mode too, operating the brake pedal restores all the normal functions of ESPÃ’.

The system’s traction logic is active in all three ESP Ã’ modes. If one of the drive wheels threatens to spin, specific brake pressure is applied to create the effect of a mechanical differential lock. This means that the engine power is optimally transferred to the road.

More distinctive exterior design than ever before

It is not only in technological but also in visual terms that the new C 63 AMG is more distinctively different from the standard C-Class than ever before. The front end is dominated by the new bonnet with its two pronounced power domes, as well as the trademark AMG radiator grille with a central star and two louvres with chrome inserts. The honeycomb pattern of the grille is also reflected in the large air dams of the new, athletically contoured front apron which forms part of the AMG-specific bodystyling. The fog lamps with chrome surrounds are spaced well apart, acting together with the flared front wheel arches to accentuate the width of the car – with the striking transition from the front apron to the wings leaving a particularly strong impression. The side air vents in the front apron serve to expel the hot air from the oil coolers. If the C 63 AMG is specified with the optional bi-xenon headlamps or the Intelligent Light System, the headlamps are also dark-tinted.

Eye-catching features when viewed from the side include the 18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels, the harmoniously integrated "6.3 AMG" lettering on the front wing and the AMG side skirts. At the rear the standard LED rear lights, the AMG rear apron with its black diffuser insert and three pronounced diffuser fins, as well as the AMG sports exhaust system with two chrome twin tailpipes, provide further visual highlights that are hallmarks of the brand. The AMG spoiler lip on the boot lid reduces lift and ensures greater handling stability at high speeds.

AMG interior with new sports seats and performance steering wheel

This decidedly sporty theme is continued in the interior of the C 63 AMG, which now has special AMG sports seats with integral head restraints for the first time. The seats not only feature a new design with cross-piping and AMG lettering, but also an adaptive backrest with adjustments for the side bolsters and lumbar support. The standard upholstery in ARTICO man-made leather/AMG fabric is available in a choice of black or reef grey – or as an option the interior can be further enhanced with particularly high-grade leather in black, reef grey or black/sahara beige. Perfect handling control is assured with the new AMG performance steering wheel in a three-spoke design, which has a rim diameter of 365 millimetres and a flattened lower section. The upper section is covered in perforated leather, and two silver AMG shift paddles enable the gears to be shifted manually.

AMG main menu with a wide variety of displays

The trademark AMG instrument cluster in a tubular design features newly styled dials, AMG-specific lettering and a new night-time design. Eye-catching details include the 320 km/h speedometer scale, AMG lettering, red needles and the "6.3 V8" logo in the rev counter. The AMG main menu in the central display allows numerous settings, with "Warm Up", "Set Up" and "RACE" modes activated via buttons on the AMG performance steering wheel. "Warm Up" displays the engine oil and coolant temperature, "Set Up" the current ESP Ã’ mode and the transmission mode "S", "C" or "M". "RACE" mode makes the RACETIMER available, with which the driver is able to measure lap times on a racetrack.

Development and design of the C 63 AMG

Creating a new car is a complex undertaking, and this certainly applies to the new Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG whose conceptual phase commenced in 2004. This began with the fundamental feasibility study known as packaging. The new C 63 AMG was first constructed as a digital model, the engine, cooling system, fuel system, drive train and axles being "married" with the bodyshell to examine buildability. In spring 2005 the first 1:4-scale design models were produced on the basis of drawings and computer images, and in addition the first testing & development vehicles were already built on the basis of the preceding C 55 AMG. This made it possible to test major assemblies such as the drive train, brakes and axles. The latest onboard measuring technology provided valuable data such as engine oil, coolant and brake disc temperatures – but other aspects of interest were lap times e.g. on the north loop of the Nürburgring, as well as measurable, precisely defined handling manoeuvres to provide comparisons between different axle configurations. These tests were accompanied by extensive aerodynamic tests on the bodyshell of the C 63 AMG, and it was only then that the final design was approved.

Following approval of the concept in the autumn of 2005, the first fully-fledged prototypes of the C 63 AMG were built. At the same time the high-performance saloon was also produced as a digital prototype. Computer simulations made it possible for the "real" development prototypes to exhibit a very high level of maturity during the first rollout. These simulations included the most important vehicle functions, such as handling dynamics, the engine and drive train, bodyshell durability, suspension performance, passive safety, the engine’s thermal characteristics and performance/fuel consumption.

From Affalterbach to every climatic zone on earth

The standardised and highly sophisticated AMG development and test programme for the C 63 AMG began in summer 2005. Over the next couple of years around 20 vehicles were dispatched all over the world from Mercedes-AMG GmbH in Affalterbach, to be subjected to strenuous tests in every climatic zone.

Test, analyse and optimise – that is the creed of the specialists at AMG to achieve the objectives laid down in the book of specifications. Another decisive aspect was an ongoing dialogue between Design and Development, so that any necessary technical modifications were also implemented in design terms.

The major test stages at a glance:

Development testing of the engine, transmission and drive train

  • Altitude tests in Denver, Colorado (USA), Lesotho (South Africa), Mont Ventoux (France) and Granada (Spain)
  • High temperature tests in Death Valley, California (USA), Upington (South Africa), Idiada proving ground (Spain) and Phoenix, Arizona (USA)
  • Driving trials in Los Angeles, California (USA)
  • Cold temperature tests in Arctic Falls (Sweden)

Development testing of the cooling and fuel systems

  • Various driving trials on the high-speed tracks in Nardo (Italy) and Papenburg
  • Trials in Upington (South Africa) and Death Valley, California (USA)
  • Tests in the DaimlerChrysler wind tunnel

Development testing of the braking and control systems

  • Brake testing on the high-speed track in Nardo (Italy) and the Grossglockner Alpine pass (Austria)
  • Testing of dynamic control systems on the Idiada proving ground (Spain), in Arjeplog (Sweden) and on the Boxberg proving ground
  • In addition various endurance trials are run, with the aim of simulating the vehicle’s entire lifecycle under the most severe conditions:
  • North loop of the Nürburgring: The car’s drive train, suspension, wheel location system, dynamic control systems, tyres and brakes are tested on the world’s most demanding racetrack.
  • Long-term testing on different roads: All the components and systems are tested together in everyday operation. Loaded up to their permitted gross vehicle weight, the test cars are put through a precisely defined test programme on country roads, motorways and in city traffic.
  • Endurance testing on the DaimlerChrysler proving ground in Papenburg: Extreme acceleration and braking manoeuvres with a high proportion of full load operation, making extreme demands on the cooling and fuel delivery systems.
  • · Endurance testing in the Swabian Alb region: The vehicles are loaded up to their permitted gross vehicle weight and driven on country roads with numerous uphill and downhill gradients, placing extreme loads on the transmission and drive train.
  • “Heide” endurance testing: (named after the poor post-war roads across the “Lüneburger Heide”): 2000 kilometres of extreme trials on the test track or on state-of-the-art test rigs. In this case the focus of the developers is on the durability of the drive train components, the entire bodyshell and the integral subframe on which the front axle, steering and engine are mounted. The test cars are loaded up to their permitted gross vehicle weight.

These tests are supplemented with extensive crash simulations and real crash tests, to provide the necessary evidence for country-specific certifications without which no registration would be possible. The end result is final vehicle approval – the green light for the launch of the C 63 AMG.

Two months; that’s how much time is left for the official unveiling of the ’08 Impreza WRX STi hatch at the Frankfurt Show in September. Of course, we promise to do our best here at Carscoop and practice Einstein’s theory of relativity by breaking the structure of press-time to deliver the first official images as earlier as possible, but for the time being, here’s a bunch of spy shots that we discovered over at our French pals at Le Blog Auto. -Continued: Click “Read More…” below

Seen here performing tests somewhere in Germany and despite the full-body camouflage, the forthcoming Impreza WRX STi looks like it’s going to honor its puffy ancestors with details like the oversized rear wing (though we were expecting something even bigger…), the huge bonnet air scoop and the blistered wheel arches. There’s no official info on what’s hiding underneath the bonnet, but we’re expect a slightly modified version of the current 2.5 turbo boxer engine with an output of around 300Hp.

After several months of negotiations and in the midst of Chrysler Group’s divorce with the Daimler Group, Chrysler and Chery Automobile Co finalized their agreement today in Beijing to jointly develop, produce and distribute small and sub-compact cars.

Under the agreement, the Chery will manufacture the cars in China and the Chrysler Group will distribute them under the Jeep, Chrysler, and Dodge brands for North America, Europe and other major markets. Just before the boyz in white let the ink roll down the paper, Chrysler’s CEO Tom LaSorda said that the agreement with Chery will play a big role in the American car manufacture’s plan of doubling sales in the next three to five years. -Continued after the jump

According to LaSorda, exports of the Chinese made mini and sub-compact car will begin in Latin America and eastern Europe within 12 months while U.S. exports are expected to commence in mid-2009. However, the first model exported, a Dodge badged vehicle based on Chery's A-1 small car will not be exported to the U.S. or Europe.

Someone let the dogs out quite earlier than we expected, but hey, that’s totally ok with us. While we’re waiting for the white collar folks down at Stuttgart to finish off eating their mini-wursts so they can upload the press release let’s see what we have beginning with the heart of any sports car. Under that bulgy hood the 2008 C 63 AMG is hiding the same normally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 engine that’s fitted in the CLK 63 AMG, E63 AMG, CLS 63AMG etc. As anticipated, Mercedes detuned the engine in comparison to other AMG models, lowering output to 457Hp. Still though that’s 37Hp more than the that its two German arch rivals, the 2008 BMW M3 and the Audi RS4, both of which are equipped with 420Hp strong V8’s. -Continued: Click “Read More…” below

In terms of maximum torque, the 6.2-litre V8 reaches a whopping 600Nm at 6.000 rpm, but there’s 500Nm of torque available from 2.000 to 6.250 rpm. The C 63 AMG accelerates from 0 to 100km/h (62mph) in 4,5 sec (RS4: 4,8 sec, M3: 4,8 sec) while its top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph).

Design-wise and apart from the usual visual treatment with the side skirts, sport bumpers, 18-inch rims etc, Mercedes has equipped the C 63 AMG with a new hood featuring two bulges reminiscent of the ones found on the first-generation SLK roadster. In all, the C 63 AMG is probably the most brutal looking car among the three German sports sedans, but we would have definitely preferred another grille as it reminds us of supped-up Eastern European Mercedes taxis.

Inside, Merc designers were a bit more constrained as the only significant changes seem to concern the “cut” sports steering wheel and the new gauges in the dashboard. We’ll have more on the 2008 C 63 AMG as soon as we get our hands on the high-res pictures and the official press release.

It might not look like one, but under those retro bodylines, there’s a Go-Kart hiding and it's equipped with an 8Hp strong Briggs & Stratton engine. The Go-Kart's owner says that the outer-shell is inspired from a 1939 Ford/Chevy Hot Rod. I don’t know why but to me it looks more like something that jumped out of a Batman movie. Either way, if you’re a 10-year-old kid this is one ride that will certainly raise your score in the neighbourhood stock-market. -More pictures after the jump

Sellers Description: You are viewing one of the coolest go cart 1939 roadster replicas you will ever see for sale on ebay. This little cart has been carefully brought to its current great condition with a brand new 8 horse power briggs and stratton motor that was about $800. I am told it will propel this little roadster to over 50 miles per hour.

The paint is a high gloss black enamel that has been colored sanded and buffed out to a better shine than most classic cars ever get and at a cost of over $1,500. The mags are painted steel with brand new multi ply tires and look fantastic as does the brand new upholstered seat with red racing stripes on it to match the custom red pin stripping. This little go cart also has a electronic push button starter and push button stop too… It also has a disc brake, working head lights and tail lights, plexy glass windshield and removable convertible top.

Chrysler Group announced on Tuesday, July 3 that it was recalling more than 80.000 or to be exact, 80.894 2007 Jeep Wrangler and Dodge Nitro SUV models in the States due to a defect that could cause power interruptions leading to a short engine stall. According to the American carmaker, there was one accident linked to the engine stall issue; however, no injuries have been reported. On its behalf, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that it opened an investigation in May after receiving about 180 complaints of engine stalling in Wrangler and Nitro vehicles. As with all recalls, Chrysler Group said that it will notify owners of the vehicles affected in a weeks time with the work completed of course free of charge.

According to a report conducted by Bloomberg, Japan's regular vehicle sales fell in the first half of the year to their lowest point since 1975. Excluding minicars, the sales of trucks, buses and cars have fell 10.5% to 1.8 million in the first six months of 2007 from a year ago. What’s even more interesting is the fact that the report blames the continuing sales slump to Japans rapidly aging population and having the lowest birth rate in the world. It’s said that Japan’s work force will shrink as much as 33% by 2050 due to this factor that will most likely effect the production of the Japanese cars. Consequently, if we got it right, they had better start making some looove over at the “Land of the Rising Sun” or find new markets to sell their cars. Guess the second option sounds a lot much easier…

Toyota is broadening its C-Segment hatch line-up in Europe with the addition of a 3door version of the Auris. Like most of the competition in Europe, Toyota preferred the easy way when it came to designing the Auris 3d meaning it simply threw out the rear doors from the 5door version and presto; a “sporty” 3d hatch

As expected, there’s no change in dimensions compared to the Auris 5d. Same goes for the engine range with the 3d being offered with two petrol units (97Hp 1.4-litre & 124Hp 1.6-litre) and two diesels (126Hp 2.0-litre & 177Hp 2.2-litre). Unfortunately Toyota hasn’t issued an official European press release yet so well sit tight with what we found on Toyota’s German site. So in Germany at least, the Auris 3d costs €700 ($954) less than its equivalent 5door version. -More images and the German price list after the jump

Here’s another poor soul who fell victim to the preciseness of a GPS system. This time in Milan Italy, an Audi A4 took a “wrong turn” and ended up on tram tracks holding up the line for hours. The driver claimed he was just following directions on his navigation system. Evidently, this is something that happens quite often. A few months back we had posted a story about a woman who followed her GPS into a river and sunk her car. I guess there is no such thing as a bad GPS system, just a bad driver. My dad once drove our rental car onto a tram track on a European vacation a few years back. Instead of making a scene, he just made his way over a 6 inch border surrounding the tracks and destroyed the car. Ces la vie! -Follow the jump for the video

Chrysler Group is planning to unveil a concept version of its forthcoming mid-size CUV, better known in the US as the Chrysler and Dodge crossovers coded JC49 and JZ49 (pic above from AMS), at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. How do we know? Well, according to an off-the-record conversation we had with a Chrysler Group Europe source of ours and even though this hasn’t been officially announced, it’s 99% certain that the American carmaker will debut the MPV/Crossover concept dubbed “Crew” at the German car Show. What our source couldn’t tell us is whether the Crew will wear a Dodge or Chrysler badge –though we’ve heard that the Crew nameplate will be used for the Dodge model. -Continued after the jump

Smaller than the recently introduced Chrysler Town & Country or as Europeans know it, Voyager, the Crew will make use of the Chrysler Sebring / Dodge Avenger platform with production scheduled for January 2008 meaning that the production version will debut either at the L.A. Show in November or at NAIAS in January ’08.

Sex sells! So Renault is using most of people’s 2 favorite activities to sell the 7 passenger Renault Grand Scenic: Sex and Smoking. As our friends over at Jalopnik said, this commercial would never fly in the U.S. I mean come on, they banned the TV ad with Paris Hilton eating a cheeseburger and washing a car. Put it this way, the Renault commercial does not appeal to the soccer moms. Unless you’re planning on having an orgy, we wouldn’t recommend this Grand Scenic. It’s too Windstarish!

Scoop: 2008 Toyota Auris TS?

Tuesday, July 03, 2007 | 3 comments » Categories | , | Bookmark and Share

Here’s a set of “scoop” images that we discovered at our Italian buds at Autoblog.it that will certainly raise a few question marks. The most obvious one is whether what we’re looking here is the forthcoming Toyota Auris TS or just a privately supped-up version with a bodykit and a pair of bucket seats? If we had to choose, we’d probably pick the first scenario. Why?

Well, first of all the images seem to have been taken inside a Toyota repair shop –see the Yaris and the WRC (?) Toyota in the above shot. Then there’s the car itself. If it’s a bodykit, then it’s a damn good one. Everything looks factory-made: sporty bumpers, alloy rims, roof spoiler and twin exhaust pipes. In the interior the featured Auris gets a set of bi-colour bucket seats and sporty pedals -or at least that’s all we can see. The bucket seats probably eliminate the chance that this is a Toyota made sport pack for the Auris. But the detail that made us say that it’s official is the German license plate: AUR @ IS 924. That’s something you’d only see on an official car. With the Frankfurt Show just around the corner, we’ll find out soon enough. -Follow the jump for more images

UPDATE: According to a comment we received, these pictures originated from the Spanish site, "ClubCorolla". Members of the forum snatched the Auris during a visit to TTE's (Toyota Team Europe) headquarters in Cologne, Germany.

Remember the bloke back in March who crashed his older brother’s brand-new Bugatti Veyron in the UK? Well the unfortunate or untalented old chap –take your pick, has received nine points on his driving license and a breathtaking £400 fine (€591 or $807). That’s not even a slap on the fingernail if you consider that Ajay Soni’s brother paid a whopping £830,000 (€1.23m or $1.67m) only a week before he trashed the Veyron after loosing control of the car when accelerating out of a bend and then collided with a Vauxhall Astra coming the opposite way. Then again, Ajay’s brother could just send him the repair bill and call it even…

Last Tuesday, during the 10th Morgan Stanley Automotive Conference in London, Alfa Romeo’s CEO Antonio Baravalle revealed official details and technical specifications on the Italian carmaker’s future portfolio. For those of you who have been “stalking” Carscoop for a while, you’ll probably remember that last year, in a similar gathering, Fiat Group unveiled the 2008–2010 product plans for all three makes of the Group (Alfa, Fiat & Lancia). In Alfa Romeo’s case, what’s new here is that we get details about the forthcoming Junior and 149 models.

So let’s see what Alfa Romeo has in store for us. Beginning from the Junior, Alfa’s “MINI killer will go on sale in the second quarter of 2008 with a starting price of 16.000.- $21.800. Based on the B-Segment Fiat Grande Punto,” the Junior will be available with a variety of engines, from an entry-level 95Hp unit (Fiat’s 1.4-liter 16v) to a 230Hp top-notch version wearing the GTA badge. All Juniors get a standard 6-speed gearbox with an automatic transmission being offered optionally. As you can seen on Alfa’s official sketches, the premium sport hatch’s design is inspired from the extravagant 8c Competizione. -Continued: Click “Read More…” below

Following the Junior, in the first quarter of 2009 Alfa Romeo will present the successor to its 147 C-Segment hatch that will most probably be called 149. Designed to compete against the likes of Audi’s A3 and BMW’s 1-Series hatch, the 4.3m long 149 will use an evolution of the
Fiat Bravo platform featuring a multi-link rear suspension and Active Roll Control. In the engine department Alfa say’s that the 149 will be offered with several powetrains starting from a base 120Hp unit (Fiat’s 1.4-litre T-Jet) up to 265Hp (Alfa’s 3.2 V6) for the GTA version. Transmission options include a standard 6-speed gearbox and an automatic. Like the Junior (though less aggressive), the 149’s design takes several design cues from the 8c Competizione.

All well? Mmm, I’d definitely say no, because I nearly had a heart attack upon viewing the 149’s basic price tag: €28.000 or…$38.200! For the love of God Alfa, that’s BMW 3-Series territory! Even if you get everything right -which I seriously, seriously doubt judging from the Fiat Group’s latest product portfolio (…), who the hell will give €28.000 for a 120Hp 1.4-litre 149 when you can get a 160Hp Audi A3 1.8TFSI for much less? Tell me that was a typo mistake, please…

Crazy but anyway, before we close this post lets see the other two products that Alfa’s readying for 2009/2010. Alfa 169: think of it as something like a “poor-man” Maserati Quattroporte. The sporty 4-sedan will cost between €40.000 to 55.000 ($54k to 75k) but it remains unknown whether it will get a FWD, 4WD or RWD biased platform –yeah right… Second up the CXover, Alfa’s first ever SUV that will be available in the first quarter of 2010. Unlike the Junior, the CXover will be (?) priced logically at €28.000 to 45.000 ($38k to 61k).

I remember some years back on a trip to Acapulco, Mexico, the cabs had replaced their beeping horns with theme songs like “La Cucaracha” and “The Mexican Hat Dance.” Therefore, I guess you could say I wasn’t surprised when we discovered that people in Shanghai, China have switched to music and voice recordings instead of tooting car horns because of a new law banning honking in the downtown area. The difference between the two countries is that the Mexicans did it for the tourists, but the Chinese are doing it to reduce noise levels in the city populated by 20 million people. -Continued after the jump

Threatening fines of up to 200 Yuan (13$), police are strictly enforcing the law but it’s still not stopping Shanghai locals from being heard. They are spending up to 100$ to customize their horns. One taxi driver has converted his to a recording of a woman's voice saying, "Please mind the car, we are making a turn." But this new tactic won’t work for long as police say all forms of honking are going to banned but have yet to enforce the law banning any noise coming from the car horn. According to Shanghai News, one cab driver is taking preventative measures to ensure he doesn’t get slapped with a fine. He has posted a large note on his horn that says, "Don't press the button.”

With a population of 20 million people that are packed into 19th century tenement housing and narrow streets, I can understand why this law was established. However, with all those cars and no honking, will we be able to hear a pin drop?

If there’s one sedan that you shouldn’t mess around with its appearance, that’s the Maserati Quattroporte and thank God, Novitec limited its actions to the 20-inch multi-spoke rims in 245/35 Pirelli P-Zero rubber up front and 285/30 at the rear axle along with the stainless steel 2x83mm outlets of the exhaust pipe left and right.

As with the Quattroporte's exterior appearance, Novitec was also quite reluctant when it came to the engine bay. Along with the new exhaust system the German tuner optimized the 4.2-liter V8’s ECU and raised cut-off speed to 7.800 rpm slighlty lifting power from 400Hp @ 7.000 rpm to 413Hp @ 7.100 rpm and maximum torque from 451Nm @ 4.500 rpm to 468Nm @ 4.650 rpm. Finally the Italian car tuner upgraded the Maserati’s suspension that includes dual adjustable stainless steel shock absorbers. While Novitec didn’t release any performance figures for the “lightly” tuned Quattroporte, they did however include several pictures of the car which you can check out after the jump below.

First presented at the 2007 Geneva Show back in March, TechArt’s Porsche 997 Turbo based GTstreet is now available for sale with prices starting off at €245,000 MSRP -about $331,000. If any of you find the will power to separate yourselves from that sort of cash you’ll get a modified 2008 Porsche 911 Turbo equipped with a 3.6-liter, 6cylinder turbocharged boxer engine that develops 630 hp at 6,800 rpm, up from standard 480 hp while peak torque increases from 620 Nm to 820 Nm at 4,500 rpm.

Power is transferred to all four wheels through a modified transmission with TechArt gear-throw shortening. According to the German tuner, the GTstreet accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h (62mph) in just 3.2 sec, 200 km/h (124mph) after just 10.9 sec while its speedometer stops at exactly 345 km/h (215mph). -Full press release and more images after the jump

PRESS RELEASE: With its 2001 TechArt GTstreet based on the Porsche 911 Turbo of the 996 model series, TechArt Automobildesign created one of the fastest and most powerful street-legal sports cars of its time. The next evolutionary stage of this fascinating concept celebrates is now available: The new TechArt GTstreet, based on the 911 Turbo of the latest 997 series, starts at 245,000 Euros MSRP.

Like the predecessor the new GTstreet edition centers on a powerful engine: The 3.6-liter twin-turbo flat engine is modified by the TechArt engine specialists and now develops 630 hp / 463 kW at 6,800 rpm, up from standard 480 hp / 353 kW. Peak torque increases from 620 Nm to 820 Nm at 4,500 rpm.

The TechArt TA 097/T3 engine conversion comprises two special VTG turbochargers, a new air box with sport air filter, high-performance manifolds, intercoolers and a stainless-steel sport exhaust system with high-performance catalysts. The precise optimal interaction of all modifications is ensured by a newly programmed engine management system.

Power is transferred to all four wheels via a modified transmission with TechArt gear-throw shortening. Thus equipped the TechArt GTstreet delivers performance that firmly places it among the world's fastest sports cars: 0 - 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds, 200 km/h after just 10.9 seconds and a top speed of 345 km/h speak volumes.

The body kit for the TechArt GTstreet was created in the wind tunnel, and offers an optimal symbiosis of aerodynamic downforce, minimized drag and striking design. The front fascia of the GTstreet with retractable carbon-fiber splitter produces downforce on the front axle and provides radiator, oil coolers and brakes with more cooling air, thanks to its large, striking air inlets. The auxiliary headlamp units with daytime running lights and fog lamps improve active safety. They also give the car even more passing clout.

The TechArt GTstreet fender flares on the front axle add 10 mm to the two-door's width and give it an even more dynamic appearance. But that's not all: The air outlets behind the front wheel houses optimize brake venting. The larger air ducts in the rear sidewalls provide engine and intercoolers with a larger supply of cooling air. For an optimal transition between front and rear fenders the TechArt designers have developed rocker panels that complement the new contours. TechArt mirror and headlamp moldings provide the finishing touches.

The TechArt roof spoiler extends the roofline and optimizes airflow to the adjustable rear airfoil of the GTstreet. The TechArt GTstreet rear fascia with integrated carbon-fiber diffuser contributes to the strong downforce generated on the rear axle. It also provides the perfect backdrop for the quad exhaust of the TechArt high-performance exhaust system.

TechArt Automobildesign offers a number of versions of its popular Formula wheel in sizes 8.5Jx20 in front and 12Jx20 on the rear axle. GTstreet buyers can choose from several color combinations and between the one-piece Formula and the multi-piece Formula II designs. The Formula II wheel features an exchangeable wheel lip. For optimal tires TechArt chose ContiSportContact 3 high-performance tires in sizes 245/30 ZR 20 and 325/25 ZR 20.

The large 20-inch wheels also provide the necessary space for the especially powerful and durable TechArt high-performance brake system. It features six-piston aluminum fixed calipers and 390-millimeter discs on the front axle. The rear axle is fitted with 365-millimeter discs and four-piston fixed calipers.

The TechArt GTstreet comes with a TechArt VarioPlus coil-over suspension that is based on the electronically adjustable PASM damping system of the 911 Turbo. This chassis allows individual ride-height lowering by up to 25 millimeters and push-button selection of two different damper settings, "Normal" or "Sport." However, the dampers are not limited to these presets. Sporty driving automatically results in firmer damper settings in both modes, thus combining excellent ride comfort during normal driving with agile and responsive handling during fast cornering.

The cockpit of the TechArt GTstreet also differs distinctly from the stock 911 Turbo. Among the differences is an exclusive leather interior with color-contrasted stitching and sporty CarboBlack highlights. The coupe is further equipped with an ergonomically shaped TechArt sport steering wheel, aluminum foot pedals, foot rest and shifter, as well as with illuminated door sills sporting the TechArt logo.

This aerial image was taken just last week when a man, high out of his mind on cocaine, “plowed” and zig-zagged his way through this wheat field in Dussen, Netherlands. But since it’s never enough fun for one car to take credit for all of the damage, two police cruisers joined in on the chase adding to the chaos. The 35-year-old man was cornered and crashed into a ditch. So much for crop circles huh? I bet the aliens are really annoyed someone stole their idea!

According to a report from the German financial newspaper Wirtschafts Woche, Daimler-no-more-Chrylser has scrapped its plans to introduce a successor to the MPV-like A & B-Class hatches in 2011. Instead, Daimler boss Dieter Zetsche is said to have given the o.k for an all new sporty compact hatch in order to compete head on with the sportier Audi A3 and BMW 1-Series models. -Continued after the jump

Wirtschafts Woche notes that the new sporty hatch could also spawn a compact coupe as replacement for the somewhat larger, C-class based, Sportcoupé. Even though the German newspaper doesn’t say it, we’re guessing that, unlike the current FWD A and B-Class models, all three versions of Mercedes’ compact model (3d, 5d and coupe) will make use of a rear-wheel drive biased platform.
