eBay: 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX!

Tuesday, August 07, 2007 | 0 comments » Categories | , , | Bookmark and Share

Well, that was fast; the first or one of the first (can’t be sure) US Spec 2008 Subaru Impreza WRXs was listed for sale on eBay with a starting price of $27,164. Just the other day I happened to visit a Massachusetts Subaru dealer with a friend who was looking into buying the current WRX and they didn’t even have the 2008 Impreza brochures in their hands, let alone the cars –though I did see a couple of days ago several ’08 WRXs being transferred on trucks at the Mass pike.

Back to the eBay 2008 Impreza WRX which consequently is wearing the same honeycomb grille as the Aussie version, has clocked a mere 7 miles and according to the seller, its equipped with 17-inch alloys, a 5-speed stick shift, CD-player, automatic climate control and cruise control. -More images after the jump

Back in June, Michelle and Haley had sent us an email featuring their hand built Ferrari 250 GTO Replica based on a Nissan 280Z and equipped with a BMW V12 engine (see pics here & video here). Now, two months later, we received another email from Michelle informing us that their replicated Ferrari was written up in Motive Magazine’s website in a manner that would have made Ferris Bueller take another “day off” all over again.

The article revisited all the real life locations of the 1986 flick “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” from the steps of Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook, Illinois to the actual garage Ferris parked his 250 GT California Spyder LWB, the article drew picturesque scenes from what became and will forever remain a classic film with a classic car. -Continued: Click “Read More…” below

Even though there were some “slight” differences in Michelle and Haley’s car and the car in the video (the one in the movie was a roadster), they still shared the same reminiscent attributes and the fact that both vehicles were replicated versions. In the movie, Coachbuilder Modena Design used a small-block Ford V8 in a custom tube chassis to create the vehicle that was “so choice”. Visit motivemag.com to read the story and we thank Michelle and Haley again for sharing their interesting adventure with us.

Quoting an article from Russian newspaper Vedomosti, Reuters is reporting that the owner of local car maker GAZ, Russian tycoon Oleg Deripaska, has bought a 5-percent stake in General Motors. GM’s stock closing price at Monday was $32.45 per share meaning that if Deripaska actually bought 5% of the American car maker on Monday he’d have to withdraw a whopping $900 million out of his bank account. Not much if you consider that according to Forbes magazine, Deripaska is Russia's second richest man with a fortune estimated at $16.8 billion.

Spy photographers or shall we call them spy cinematographers have managed to scoop the top-version of the next generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class performing test runs around the iconic Nurburging race track in Germany. Expected to be introduced in late 2009 or early 2010, the E 63 AMG will probably retain the current model’s 514Hp strong 6.3-liter V8 upgraded though to produce around 550Hp in order to justify the 2009/2010 name tag.

Subaru Japan has presented the 2008 model year Legacy “Tuned by STI”. Unfortunately our Japanese is as bad as yours and the translation sites can’t seem to differentiate between sushi and suspension. But anyway, with the help of the image gallery we suppose that changes over the stock version include revised suspension and brake system, a sporty exhaust and the usual STI body and interior upgrades. Hopefully Subaru will release an English press release later on, but until then take a look at the picture gallery after the jump. -Continued

Yeah we know, BBQ Grilles? But this ain’t no ordinary BBQ Grille as it’s been penned by the renowned Italian car-designing house Pininfarina. Even though we’re definitely more of the barbeque eating guys than the cooking ones, this grille would look mighty good next to the Ferrari F430 in our dream garage.

Porsche 911 Turbo Gauge Desk Clock

Tuesday, August 07, 2007 | 0 comments » Categories | , | Bookmark and Share

If you’re a “petrolhead” with plenty of time in your hands then this puzzling hand-made desk clock made from a 70’s Porsche 911 Turbo speedometer and a tachometer is something you should consider adding to your collection. According to its maker “PWH”, the tachometer acts as the hour hand while the speedometer as the minute hand. Both hands only travel through 180º - the upper part of the gauges – so the entire range of 12 hours / 60 minutes is compressed into half. At the end of their travel the two hands rapidly return back to 0. Makes Einstein’s “theory of relativity” seem like a piece of cake doesn’t it… -More images after the jump

Four years after the second generation A8’s market launch in early 2003 and just two years after its first facelift in 2005 which saw the introduction of the so-called single-frame grille inspired by the Nuvolari Concept, Audi has come forward with the 2008 A8. Aesthetically, minor changes include the slightly modified single-frame grille, rectanglurar fog lights, exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals, new wheel designs and LED tail lights along with new paint finishes and new interior colour schemes and inlays.

Most of the changes come under the skin though as Audi revised the steering system for a more direct feel while overall travelling comfort has been enhanced by the modified adaptive air suspension and extensive improvements to noise insulation. Audi also introduced a new 2.8 V6 FSI petrol engine delivering 210 Hp and a maximum torque of 280Nm. The A8 2.8 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62mph) in 8.0 seconds with a maximum speed of 238 km/h (148 mph) and an avg. fuel consumption of 8.3 l/100 km (28.3 mpg). In Germany the Audi A8 2.8 FSI costs from 61,900 EUR - $85,350. -Follow the jump for the press release

Audi A8: Sporty luxury and exemplary efficiency

  • New A8 2.8 FSI offers the lowest CO2 emissions in its class
  • Consistent enhancements across the model series
  • A new driving experience in one of the world's quietest cars

The Audi A8 not only offers the sportiest performance of any luxury-class saloon, it also stands out as a model of efficiency. A particularly outstanding example is the new A8 2.8 FSI: superlative performance and excellent comfort make it a joy to drive. But at the same time, with a standard fuel consumption of 8.3 l/100 km, its CO2 emissions of 199 g/km are the lowest in its class.

The new A8 model series features major advancements across the range, which includes the top models Audi A8 W12 and Audi S8, and offers a new driving feel whilst building on traditional strengths. An even more precise driving feel, even better ride and acoustic comfort, and subtle refinements to the exterior and interior serve to strengthen the special status of Audi's flagship model.

Unique character – consistently enhanced

To achieve this, many aspects have been refined in the unique blend of sportiness, elegance, supreme control and sophistication that forms the Audi A8 character. For instance, the more direct steering and re-engineered running gear have produced even more exact handling. Overall travelling comfort has also been enhanced by the modified adaptive air suspension and extensive improvements to noise insulation. These make the Audi A8 one of the world's quietest and most comfortable saloon cars.

The new assistance systems Audi lane assist and Audi side assist promise to make life easier for the driver and considerably enhance safety, especially on long journeys. Their tasks are to alert the driver if the car begins to drift out of its lane and to warn of vehicles in the adjacent lane.

Luxurious, sporty motoring with low fuel consumption

The 2.8 FSI impressively demonstrates how well the Audi A8 combines luxurious, sporty motoring with high efficiency and low fuel consumption. Its efficiency nevertheless comes with exciting performance, as the new high-tech V6 engine produces 154 kW / 210 bhp and delivers its maximum torque of 280 newton metres over the broad rev band of 3,000 to 5,000 rpm. With acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.0 seconds and a maximum speed of 238 km/h, the Audi A8 2.8 FSI is an effortlessly powerful performer.

High-tech engine with lightweight design concept

Thanks to its state-of-the-art engine and an exceptionally low vehicle weight of only 1,690 kilograms, the A8 2.8 FSI has a standard fuel consumption of just 8.3 litres per 100 kilometres. That is equivalent to CO2 emissions of 199 grams per kilometre – the lowest value of any luxury-class car. Here the dual benefits of low vehicle weight – thanks to lightweight aluminium design based on Audi Space Frame technology – and low wind resistance make themselves felt, in both excellent performance and equally good fuel economy.

The new six-cylinder engine demonstrates "Vorsprung durch Technik" with FSI petrol direct injection and the innovative Audi valvelift system. This new technology adjusts the valve lift, varying it between two levels. The Audi valvelift system uses sliding cam units mounted on the intake camshaft, which are moved by an electronic control mechanism. Depending on the engine power demand, the valves are opened wide or less wide as determined by the position of the cam units.

The advantage: the required quantity of fresh charge can be very efficiently controlled via the valve opening. Most of the time, the throttle valve remains fully open, thus substantially reducing throttle loss. In combination with a series of additional measures to reduce friction on numerous components, the Audi valvelift system reduces fuel consumption by ten percent.

High power transmission comfort with athletic qualities

The new A8 2.8 FSI is equipped with front wheel drive and the multitronic continuously variable automatic transmission. The multitronic not only offers unmatched power transmission comfort with fully jolt-free acceleration, its tall overall gear ratios make for very fuel-efficient motoring. Nevertheless, the seven fixed ratios available in manual mode reveal its thoroughly athletic qualities.

In Germany the Audi A8 2.8 FSI with its extensive standard equipment costs from 61,900 euros incl. VAT.

Consistently enhanced

The A8 impressively embodies the progressiveness of the Audi brand: its extremely rigid lightweight body based on the Audi Space Frame principle, the powerful FSI and TDI engines, quattro permanent four-wheel drive and the highly acclaimed MMI operating system are a few of the elements that demonstrate Audi's impressive "Vorsprung durch Technik" in the luxury class.

The character of the Audi A8 is formed by a synthesis of dynamic and agile performance and exceptionally refined ride and acoustic comfort. While setting new standards with its agility and steering precision, the A8 displays handling with definite sports car qualities. Even long journeys are both relaxing and pleasurable.

To underscore the unique character of this luxury saloon, Audi has further enhanced the two major strengths of the A8. The rack-and-pinion steering with variable steering ratio and servotronic speed-dependent power assistance has been optimised and engineered for a more direct feel. The dampers, supports and tuning of the adaptive air suspension have been revised. As a result, the A8 shows an even more spontaneous response to steering input, tightly follows winding country roads and effortlessly maintains a smooth straight line at high speeds.

Air suspension with even more sensitive comfort

Gains in performance and handling are matched by those in ride comfort: the standard-specification adaptive air suspension is now even more sensitive in responding to fine bumps. The electronically controlled variable dampers are now fitted with new seals to reduce friction. These are combined with new valves that have optimised characteristic curves, and the entire hydraulics have also been retuned. The A8 absorbs expansion joint grooves with supple ease and without even the hint of a vibration. With the addition of an insulation package to reduce rolling noise and road noise, the luxury saloon from Audi offers outstanding comfort.

Exemplary soundproofing

Even the complete acoustics of the A8 have been optimised with the use of innovative materials – after all, Audi approaches noise insulation as a component of its intelligent lightweight construction. The result: without gaining weight, the Audi A8 achieves the lowest rolling, road and ambient noise levels in its class. Being one of the quietest cars in the world is an important element of the relaxing long-distance comfort that is a hallmark of the Audi A8.

Assistance systems bring comfort and safety

Drivers of the Audi A8 can rely on the support of the most up-to-date assistance systems. They serve to enhance comfort and combat driver fatigue on long journeys, thus making an important contribution to safety. The new Audi side assist in the A8 makes use of intelligent radar technology.

The system is especially designed for lane-changing manoeuvres and warns the driver of dangerous situations: whenever there is another vehicle in the critical zone, a yellow LED display in the exterior mirror housing lights up and remains on.

If the driver of the A8 activates the indicator to change lane even though the warning display is lit up, the LEDs become brighter and flash more quickly at shorter intervals. This signal is almost impossible to miss as the peripheral vision of the human eye is extremely sensitive to changes in contrast.

Audi lane assist warns the driver to prevent an unintentional departure from the lane. A small camera positioned above the interior mirror on the windscreen observes the road ahead of the car and a high-speed computer detects the lane marking lines. If the driver moves towards one of these lines without indicating, Audi lane assist makes the driver aware of this by a vibration in the steering wheel.

Still a step ahead in the luxury class

The clear and progressive design idiom of the Audi A8 stands out for its timeless quality. The exterior design has thus only been accentuated at carefully chosen points – from the modified single-frame grille and new exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals to the new wheel designs and LED tail lights with their innovative night design. To complete the range, the A8 is available in new paint finishes and with sophisticated aluminium trim inserts plus new interior colour schemes and inlays.

The Audi A8 thus resolutely continues its progress on the road to success. With sales of over 100,000 vehicles so far, the current model has already exceeded the total sales volume of its predecessor. And it is continuing to make gains year by year in a market segment that has remained flat overall. How come? Because the A8 steadily attracts customers from other brands with its clear character, while at the same time product loyalty and repurchase rates among A8 drivers are above average.

The only common ground between the mid-80’s first generation Mazda RX-7 and the late 60’s Jaguar E-Type is the front-mounted engine, rear-wheel drive layout. But that seemed a good enough base for this old chap to create a unique replica of the stunning Jaguar E-Type Convertible using the chassis and the 135Hp strong Wankel rotary engine of a 1985 Mazda RX-7 (FB, 3rd Series). Even though the Rotary powered E-Type might lack the… penis-like analogies of the original Brit model, the fiberglass body is pretty detailed and you may fool some people. Plus, you’ll get a kick out of the looks on everybody’s faces when they hear the rotary engine scream. The RX-7 E-Type Convertible was sold on e-Bay a couple of days ago for $16,000 or 12,250 EUR. -More images after the jump

Kia has taken off the wraps on the second preview image of the three door Cee’d, dubbed Pro-cee’d, unveiling the tail of the car which has remained quite close to the original concept previewed at the 2006 Paris Show. Judging from this image, we’d say that former Audi designer Peter Schreyer took a rather close look at the 3door A3 (see pic below) when he penned the Pro-cee’d. In any case, Kia’s sporty hatch looks like quite the piece and we believe that its design will draw a lot of attention in the European C-Segment category (VW Golf, Opel Astra, Renault Megane etc).

“We wanted to make Pro-cee’d as ‘sporty’ as cee’d could possibly be, while still remaining a member of our cee’d family,” explains Gregory Guillaume, Chief Designer, Kia Motors Europe. -Continued: Click “Read More…” below

“We are proud that the appearance of the Pro-cee’d production car remains so close to the concept we showed at the Paris Motor Show in 2006. The three-door Kia Pro-cee’d is such a comprehensive re-working of the cee’d design theme that only the bonnet and the front wing panels are carried over from the five door model. All other exterior panels are new and exclusive to this car.”

The new Kia Pro-cee’d three-door hatchback model will make its World Premiere at this year’s Frankfurt International Motor Show on 11 September and will go on sale across Europe in early 2008.

Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year (1977-2007), Mercedes-Benz tuning specialist Brabus will unveil a high-performance sports sedan at the 2007 Frankfurt International Show in September. The German tuner characterizes the car in its own words as a ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing. Although Brabus avoided giving out any details they did hand out a picture of the car covered in black clothing. As you can see for yourself in the pictures after the jump, a closer look reveals that the vehicle hiding underneath is a 2007 C-Class. Up until now Brabus’ most powerful version of the new C-Class is the 344Hp strong V6 C350 (see here). So what’s in store for us at Frankfurt? In our humble opinion, a V8 powerhouse delivering far more than 400Hp. -Press release after the jump

BRABUS Celebrates Its 30th Anniversary at IAA 2007

World Debut of a True “Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing” and Launch of the Redesigned BRABUS Website

Bodo Buschmann founded BRABUS back in 1977. On occasion of its 30th anniversary BRABUS presents an automotive ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing” at the Frankfurt International Auto Show IAA 2007 that will redefine this fascinating vehicle segment. The debut will be accompanied by the launch of the newly designed BRABUS website at www.brabus.com.

BRABUS is the world’s largest independent automobile tuner and is considered a car manufacturer by the German Federal Motor Vehicle Registration Agency (Kraftfahrtbundesamt). The BRABUS tradition of building legendary special models is as long as it is successful. What started back in 1984 with a Mercedes 190 equipped with a V8 engine, led eventually to the BRABUS E V12 that in 1996 set a new world record for fastest street-legal sedan in the Guinness Book of World Records with a top speed of 330 km/h (205 mph). Today that same record is held by the BRABUS ROCKET with a top speed of 365.7 km/h (227.2 mph).

The idea of dropping an immensely powerful engine into the engine bay of a sedan with almost indiscernible exterior modifications now reaches its latest pinnacle with the debut of a new ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing.’ The latest BRABUS special model based on a Mercedes-Benz vehicle delivers performance that only a very few of the world’s super sports cars can match.

Since 1997 some ten million auto enthusiasts have visited the continually updated BRABUS website. Now a completely redesigned website goes online at www.brabus.com.

Users can find loads of interesting information on BRABUS, its 30-year history and the extensive BRABUS product lineup. But that’s not all: An interactive virtual tour also offers glimpses behind the scenes of the dream factory in Bottrop.

The BRABUS Art Club is another new feature of the online presence of BRABUS. For the inauguration the club will feature a photo editing contest. Online visitors can choose from various BRABUS models and then render these models in scenery they can design. An international jury will select the best of these art works that will be presented on the new BRABUS website and elsewhere. There are also a number of attractive prizes.

A pit stop that allows interested visitors to virtually mount any available BRABUS wheel on the latest Mercedes models of their choice is also part of the site as are downloads of the various BRABUS sales literature and the latest selection of available BRABUS complete vehicles.

Wondering what the hell is the jet doing in the images provided by the Swedes? Join the club. Despite Saab’s or rather GM’s persistence to convince us that the 9-7X Aero is yet another Saab “Born from jets”, between you and me, we’re just talking about a rebadged version of the Chevrolet Trailblazer SS with a 45k base price. Sounds more like “priced like a jet” rather than born from one… -Click “Read More…” below for the image gallery

Taking Eames Shell Chairs to the 21st century, Garageworks Industries have presented a modern interpretation of the famed chair design substituting fiberglass with carbon fiber, a material that has found many uses in the car industry thanks to its strength and light weight. But chairs? Sorry but we’ll have to agree with our friends at Motorpasion that although the chairs look mighty nice -especially beside the Lamborghini Murcielago, this is one seat we wouldn’t like to put our buttocks on.

One Hell Of A Pimped Lada 2105

Boy did this dude take tuning to the extreme! Agreed, it may not be automotive “haute couture” but you have to admit that that he made the Lada 2105 sedan unrecognizable: coupe body with Lambo style doors, Porsche brakes, 18-inch alloys with 225/40 rubber, roll cage, head up-display (!), Recaro bucket seats and apparently several mechanic upgrades (there’s no info on the engine used) are just a sample of what we see. Who’d think that the rear-wheel drive, Fiat 124 based Lada 2105 would still be so popular for conversions? -Image gallery after the jump

Roughly a month before Mercedes-Benz officially unveils the Estate version of the new C-Class at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, South African car magazine “Wheels24” managed to scoop the mid-size SW without any camouflage whatsoever thus fully revealing the exterior shape of the new family orientated Benz. Weirdly enough and in contrast with the sexy C-Class sedan, the Estate’s appearance is once again somewhat uninspired. Maybe Benz designers should have taken a lesson or two from their colleagues in Audi (A4 Avant) and Alfa Romeo (159 SportWagon). -Continued after the jump

Hopefully the 2008 C-Class Estate will compensate its owners for its uninspiring looks with more interior space and practicality. As one would anticipate, the C-Class Estate’s engine range will be identical with the sedan’s, meaning that it will include a top range AMG version fitted with the 457Hp strong naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 unit.

We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again; we don’t favor tuning solutions for sport models like the R8. Even if Kicherer’s package doesn’t include any mechanical fiddling as it concentrates on the cars handling and appearance, the end result is what we’d call, “Kitsch…erer”. Copmared to the stock version, Kicherer has added a new front spoiler that promises to reduce lift on the front axle by 15%, a new rear spoiler, 20-inch alloy rims and a set of H&R springs that lower the R8’s ground clearance by up to 15mm up front and by 30mm at the rear axle. -Continued after the jump

Cool Mustang And Corvette Trailers

We stumbled upon these motorcycle trailers mimicking the shape of Mustangs and Corvettes and even though they’re a tad expensive –both versions cost $3,495 or 2,535 EUR, we completely dig them. To be honest, we’re not quite sure if the trailers are designed solely for use on bikes or if they can also be fitted on cars.

The company that makes them, “American Custom Trailers” also accepts special orders for a custom trailer. If you choose this option though, prices skyrocket to $9,995 or 7,250 EUR which is kinda of a lot in our books but whatev. In this case the maker requires a deposit of $3,000 while the trailer takes 12 to 15 weeks to complete. -More pics after the jump

Audi’s authentic replica of the Silver Arrow that dominated the world of races pre WWII, is built on a scale of 1:2 to make it large enough to accommodate kiddy drivers up to 4’ 5” tall. The pedal car is made up of over 900 individual parts. Undoubtedly, its most unique feature is the aluminum space frame and the body made from aluminum paneling. Other highlights –remember, we’re talking about a kids toy here…, include a hydraulic dual-disc brake, seats, framing and steering wheel upholstered in leather by a bag-maker, as in the Audi TT, while the steering wheel can be removed to make getting in and out easier - just like the original Silver Arrow.

PAYING HOMAGE TO THE BYGONE ERA OF MOTOR RACING: AUTO UNION TYPE C PEDAL CAR

INGOLSTADT, Germany - A body made from aluminum, handcrafted leather trim and an extraordinary design – the vehicle sends Hubert Waltl, Head of Audi Toolmaking, into a rapture the instant he lays eyes on it: "This car is something really special." And, indeed, the car in front of him is no ordinary car – it's the Auto Union Type C pedal car which AUDI AG has brought onto the market as an absolute first. No other car manufacturer offers a pedal car built so elaborately and to such a high standard.

How did Audi stumble upon this idea? "We needed a highlight for our collection which conveys the brand message and, at the same time, is spectacular enough to find buyers," says Katharina Wicker, Head of Audi design – Lifestyle Articles. And this was how the idea came about to design a pedal car that mirrors the company's heritage at first sight. The Type C Grand Prix racing car provided the ideal blueprint for doing this. The Auto Union Silver Arrow dominated the world of motor racing in 1936, racking up a total of ten Grand Prix victories. Furthermore, the Type C is one of the best-selling heritage models in the range of Audi miniatures. The pedal car will therefore be an exhibition piece for "grown-up" fans too.

The car's execution called for a great deal of technical know-how and creativity. For a start, how large should the pedal car be made? How close should it keep to the original in order to nevertheless demonstrate the quality and workmanship of a true Audi? Which materials are best suited to underlining the Audi brand values of sophistication, progressiveness and sportiness? "The greatest challenge of all was transposing a historical model to a pedal car for children while remaining as faithful as possible to the original," reveals Achim Badstübner, director of the Munich design studio that created the first draft designs. Those responsible for the project eventually decided to build the pedal car on a scale of 1:2 to make it large enough to accommodate budding racing drivers up to 4’ 5” tall.

The technical drawings originated in Audi's own tool shop. And in true keeping with the premise "designed by Audi, produced by Audi", special tools and jigs were purpose-designed for the pedal car's manufacture in the Audi tool shop too. The pedal car is made up of over 900 individual parts. It features a hydraulic dual-disc brake and its speed is controlled via the seven-speed hub gear with back-pedaling brake function. Further technical highlights include the aluminum space frame and the body made from aluminum paneling which, just like on the full-size Audi models, symbolize the brand's expertise in the field of lightweight design. The seats, framing and steering wheel have been upholstered in leather by a bag-maker, as in the Audi TT, while the elegant spoke wheels have been custom-made. And because this pedal car seeks to replicate many different aspects of the racing car on which it is modeled, the steering wheel can be removed to make getting in and out easier, just as on the original.

The prototype of the pedal car was unveiled to the public for the first time at the Paris Motor Show in autumn 2006. Visitors to the show were instantly enthralled. "Lots of people even wanted to buy the exhibition model there and then!" recalls Katharina Wicker.

This pedal car, which is limited to a run of 999 models and is far more than just an exclusive collector's item, was an absolute joy to work on for all involved in the project. "It took me straight back to my childhood days. And I wasn't the only one to be seized by that play instinct again," says a delighted Hubert Waltl, Head of Audi Toolmaking. And Achim Badstübner is equally thrilled about the project's success: "Everyone put their heart and soul into this pedal car. And that is something we are all very proud of."

The pedal car can be ordered from the Audi importer for the specific country, who will also be able to provide details regarding the respective price.

Nissan presented a new concept car equipped with various systems that not only detect and warn drivers about their state of sobriety, but they also take matters into their hands immobilizing the vehicle. The systems incorporated in Nissan’s concept car include a facial monitor that detects driver’s consciousness through eyes, a driving monitor that checks the behavior of the vehicle –eg. If the car strays out of its driving lane, and alcohol odor sensors integrated into the driver’s and passenger seats to detect the presence of alcohol in the air inside the vehicle cabin. These systems issue visual and voice warning alerts and/or tighten the driver’s seat belt.

Most importantly though, Nissan’s experimental vehicle also features a sensor built into the transmission shift knob. The latter can spot the presence of alcohol in the perspiration of the driver's palm. If the alcohol-level detected is above the pre-determined threshold, then the system automatically locks the transmission, immobilizing the car. While we totally agree with the “Drink? Then Don’t Drive” concept, to be honest we’re not so sure about our car having a mind of its own. -Press release after the jump

CONCEPT CAR TO SHOWCASE ANTI DRINK-DRIVING TECHNOLOGY

TOKYO (3 August, 2007) – Nissan Motor Co., Ltd has revealed a new concept car featuring multiple preventative features designed to reduce drink-driving. The various technologies are designed to detect the driver's state of sobriety and to activate a range of preventive measures including immobilization of the vehicle.

This concept car was developed as an exploratory platform to showcase breakthrough technologies that could potentially be applied to future production cars, part of an ongoing programme from Nissan contributing towards the prevention of drink-driving.

Nissan has already launched and is developing several initiatives to help prevent drunk-driving. In June, the company introduced the “drink-driving” message alert on its navigation system. In July, Nissan also began testing of a new on-board breathalyser system in cooperation with several local government authorities, where an interlock mechanism will immobilise the vehicle if the driver’s breath indicates the presence of alcohol above a specified level.

Nissan is taking a holistic approach towards safety that extends beyond the technology built into its vehicles. To achieve a “safe driving environment”, Nissan has embarked on the Intelligent Transport System Project (ITS) in Kanagawa Prefecture – aimed at helping to reduce road accidents via the analysis of traffic data collected from on-the-road vehicles and traffic beacons. In Japan, the company’s safety vision is to halve the number of traffic fatalities or serious injuries involving Nissan vehicles by 2015 compared with the level in 1995.

Alcohol Odour Sensors

1) A hi-sensitivity alcohol odour sensor is built into the transmission shift knob which is able to detect the presence of alcohol in the perspiration of the driver's palm as he or she attempts to start driving. When the alcohol-level detected is above the pre-determined threshold, the system automatically locks the transmission, immobilising the car. A “drink-driving” voice alert is also issued via the car navigation system.

2) Additional alcohol odour sensors are also incorporated into the driver’s and passenger seats to detect the presence of alcohol in the air inside the vehicle cabin. When alcohol is detected, the system issues both a voice alert and a message alert on the navigation system monitor.

Facial Monitoring System

A camera is mounted on the instrument cluster facing the driver to monitor the driver’s face. The system is calibrated to monitor the driver's state of consciousness through eyes. When the system detects signs of drowsiness, a voice and message alert is triggered via the navigation system. Additionally, a seat-belt mechanism is activated which tightens around the driver to gain his or her immediate attention.

Driving Behaviour

By constantly monitoring the operational behaviour of the vehicle (e.g. sensing if the vehicle is drifting out of its driving lane), the system can identify signs of inattentiveness or distraction in the driver. When the system detects such behaviour, voice and message alerts are issued via the navigation system. The seat-belt alert mechanism is also activated, tightening around the driver to gain immediate attention.

Limited Edition SUV Offers Jet-Like Performance

Saab 9-7X Aero Takes Off

DETROIT -- Saab takes SUV-performance to a new altitude as it announces the Aero performance version of the Saab 9-7X today. The limited edition 9-7X Aero will make its way to dealer showrooms early this autumn.

The Saab 9-7X brings unique Saab brand characteristics to the midsize SUV segment, including sophisticated styling inside and out, premium design features, and the sporty and spirited performance inherent to Saab vehicles. Since its debut two years ago, more than 12,000 have been sold in the U.S. and Canada. For 2008, Saab adds the Aero model - the symbol of serious Saab performance - to the 9-7X lineup. The limited edition 9-7X Aero takes Saab's interpretation on the midsize SUV to an entirely new level accelerating the performance aspect of the sophisticated vehicle with a 6.0L V-8, 20-inch wheels and tires, unique paint and custom interior accouterments.

"The 9-7X Aero is one great SUV to pilot," Shannon said. "We are excited to offer enthusiastic drivers an increased level of performance with the Aero, a symbol of Saab performance, in the midsize SUV segment."

The new 9-7X Aero features a powerful, 6.0L small-block V-8 delivering 390 horsepower (295 kW) and 395 lb.-ft. (542 Nm) of torque. With 0-60 mph acceleration under six seconds, the 9-7X Aero is a treat for those who are actively passionate about the driving experience.

The 9-7X Aero will be easy to spot as it wears a paint color all its own: Carbon Flash Metallic. The charcoal metallic paint nicely enhances the SUV's clean lines. Specific to the 9-7X Aero are 20-inch polished, aluminum wheels wrapped with P255/50R20 V-speed-rated performance tires that provide the optimum balance between ride and handling. Complementing the refined and driver-oriented cockpit-inspired interior are "Aero" embroidered leather seats and embossed floor mats.

Under the hood of the 9-7X Aero is the LS2 6.0L V-8 with a cold air induction package, rated at 390 horsepower (295 kW)* at 6,000 rpm and 395 lb.-ft. of torque (542 Nm)* at 4,000 rpm. The LS2 6.0L is based on the small-block V-8 architecture and delivers excellent down-low torque for strong off-the-line performance. Torque is inherent to the engine's cam-in-block design, which features large 4.00-inch-diameter (101,6 mm) bores and a 3.62-inch (92 mm) stroke. Response is crisp and immediate, thanks to the electronically controlled throttle.

Unique to the 9-7X Aero's version of the engine is a composite intake manifold adapted to the LS2 engine to help produce balanced torque and horsepower. Maximum towing capacity on 9-7X Aero model is 6,600 pounds (2994 kg).

Like all Saabs, the new Saab 9-7X Aero is driver-focused, with a lowered chassis tuned and tested to deliver responsive, balanced handling. Corner control and body roll control are improved with front stabilizer bars that are approximately 10 percent larger in diameter. Additional strength is provided by a heavy-duty rear axle with limited-slip differential.

With a four-wheel disc braking system enhanced with larger, 12.8-inch (325 mm) front disc rotors and iron twin-piston calipers, it's not difficult to put a stop to things in the more powerful 9-7X Aero. The heavy-duty iron calipers are stiff and retain their shape under high-pressure/high-heat braking conditions, providing a more linear feel and reduced pedal travel in high-energy stops. The brake pads use high-performance linings for strong fade resistance.

ABS and automatic all-wheel-drive are standard on all 9-7X models as well as the StabiliTrak electronic stability control system that provides confident, sure-footed travel. The performance-oriented all-wheel-drive system delivers impressive on-road grip and enhanced "launch" feel. The always-engaged system uses a Torsen center differential to split torque between the front and rear wheels. It is a torque-bias system that detects low traction at one axle and directs more torque to the other when needed.

Like all 9-7X models, the Aero model represents a terrific value with a high-level of standard equipment. In fact, the 9-7X boasts the most standard features in its class while offering a very competitive starting price at $39,935. The limited edition 9-7X Aero will start at $45,690, which includes a $745 destination fee and will begin arriving at dealerships this fall.

John Wayland is a daring 47-year-old who has changed the preconceived notion that electric cars are widely known for their fuel efficiency instead of speed and muscle. He belongs to a group of hot-rodders who “humiliate” all gasoline-powered cars. For example, his “White Zombie” is an electric 1972 Datsun Sedan, which he bought in 1985 for $585, that can go from a standing start to 109 miles an hour in 11.9 seconds, making it one of the fastest street-legal cars in the nation. Other hot rodders like Wayland put cars like Corvettes to the test on the race track proving that electric power can appeal to the environmentally friendly speed freaks.

White Zombie and the other electric cars compete in the most popular drag-racing category: the one for cars that can be driven on regular streets. Anybody can drive up and compete in this "street-legal" category. White Zombie has two powerful motors normally used to operate forklifts and 36 12-volt storage batteries crammed into the back seat and trunk. Unfortunately, and to our dismay, most electric cars in the U.S. are little more than “souped up golf carts with fewer batteries and much less power.” -See a video of the electric Datsun racing after the jump

A test issued by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for 11 midsize luxury cars revealed that bumpers of even the most expensive vehicles do not resist damage in low speed impacts. The Institute conducted a series of 4 low-speed tests, full front and rear into a barrier designed to mimic the front or back bumper on another vehicle plus front and rear corner impacts. The full-width impacts were conducted at 6 mph while the more demanding corner impacts are run at 3 mph. (see how mainstream sedans managed at IIHS tests here)

The worst performer in the pack of 11 midsize luxury cars that were tested was the Infiniti G35 which sustained almost $14,000 in damage - that's more than double the cost of repairing a BMW 3-Series for God's sake! The Infiniti was a disaster,” said Institute senior vice president Joe Nolan. "There shouldn't be much or any damage in collisions at these speeds, especially to expensive and presumably well-made cars." The best performer was the Saab 9-3 which sustained "only" $5,243 in damage while the Audi A4 was quite close with $5.831. From the 11 cars tested, 4 broke the $10,000 barrier.

So, the question that follows is why were are spending so much cash on presumably quality cars and at the slightest fender bender we’re paying up to $14,000 and our first born child? As Nolan pointed out, "there's nothing luxurious about shelling out thousands of dollars to fix damage from a bump that occurred from something equivalent to the speed of a brisk walk. -Press Release and analytical repair costs after the jump

Bumpers on luxury cars aren't luxurious: worst is Infiniti G35; 4 of 11 cars sustain more than $10,000 damage in 4 minor bumps

ARLINGTON, VA — Bumpers, even those on expensive cars, don't resist damage in low-speed impacts. The Infiniti G35, the worst performer, sustained almost $14,000 damage in a series of 4 tests conducted at 3 and 6 mph by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The Saab 9-3 was the best, sustaining $5,243 damage. Only 3 cars sustained less than $6,000 damage, while 4 would cost more than $10,000 to fix.

"The Infiniti was a disaster, and even the Saab sustained way too much damage in these low-speed impacts," says Institute senior vice president Joe Nolan. "There shouldn't be much or any damage in collisions at these speeds, especially to expensive and presumably well-made cars."

Why bumpers don't bump: The purpose of a bumper is to absorb the energy of a low-speed collision before it damages expensive-to-repair parts like fenders and hoods. But there are multiple problems, the first of which is that the bumpers on colliding vehicles often don't line up vertically so they don't engage to begin with. Even some that do line up don't stay engaged during an impact. Their aerodynamic styling may allow them to slide under the bumpers of the vehicles they strike. This means they can't do the job of energy absorption. Another problem is that the bars underneath bumper covers, which are supposed to do the main work of absorbing crash energy, often aren't up to it. They may not be big enough to provide much protection from damage, especially if they don't extend to vehicle corners, or they may be too flimsy to absorb much energy.

Something else driving high repair costs after minor bumps is the price of replacement parts to fix the damage. This is especially true of luxury cars, which are expensive not only to purchase but also to repair.

To assess and compare bumper performance in low-speed impacts, the Institute conducts a series of 4 low-speed tests — full front and rear into a barrier designed to mimic the front or back bumper on another vehicle plus front and rear corner impacts. The full-width impacts are conducted at 6 mph while the more demanding corner impacts are run at 3 mph.

These tests replace the 5 mph flat-barrier and pole tests the Institute conducted for decades to assess bumper performance. The new tests, which reflect years of development, more closely replicate the damage patterns in today's low-speed collisions between vehicles. The first set of results of the Institute's new tests involved inexpensive and moderately priced midsize cars, which sustained up to about $9,000 damage in the 4 tests.

"Luxury cars don't perform any better than cheaper cars," Nolan points out. "There's nothing luxurious about shelling out thousands of dollars to fix damage from a bump at a speed about like a brisk walk."

Make bumpers wider and taller: To do an effective job of managing crash energy, the bars underneath bumper covers have to be long enough to protect car bodies out to the front and rear corners. If a bar doesn't extend far enough, a minor corner impact is likely to cause lots of damage, even compromising lights and other safety-related parts. The headlight on 1 car the Institute recently tested was damaged so much that it wouldn't illuminate, and those on another 7 sustained lesser damage.

Bumpers also have to be tall enough to engage, and to stay engaged with, the bumpers on other vehicles in collisions, even during emergency braking. Otherwise the bumpers bypass each other when the vehicles collide, overriding and underriding so that crash energy goes right through and crumples the vehicle body.

The Mercedes C class is a good example. Its front bumper is mounted so low that it underrode the barrier in the Institute's front full-width test, escaping virtually unscathed. A little touch-up paint was all that was needed to repair the plastic bumper cover. What absorbed the energy of the impact was the C class's grille, hood, radiator, headlight, and air conditioning condenser, all of which were damaged. This is how the repair costs escalated to more than $5,000, the highest total sustained by any of the 11 cars in any single test.

"This is exactly what we don't want to see," Nolan says. "The car body took the hit."

On the other hand, the front bumper system on the C class includes a longer bar than on the other luxury cars. This reduced damage in the corner impact to less than $1,000, second best behind the Volvo S60's $543.

Flimsy bumpers fail: Even when bumpers engage in collisions without under- and overriding each other, the components may fail. Bumper bars may not be strong enough. Energy-absorbing materials (foam or something similar) may not be up to the job.

The Audi A4 was the best performer among the luxury cars in both front and rear full-width tests. Equipped with components that work like shock absorbers to dissipate crash energy before it can damage the car body, the A4 sustained less than $1,000 damage in each test.

"It isn't coincidental that the A4 is the only luxury car among the 11 we tested with this kind of absorbers, which usually outperform other methods of managing the energy of crashes. If the A4 had longer bumpers for protection in corner impacts, it probably would have been the best performer among this lot of cars instead of second to the Saab 9-3," Nolan says. A bonus of stroking energy absorbers is that they don't have to be replaced after every impact. They can absorb energy again in subsequent collisions.

Federal rules don't cover bumpers on minivans, pickups, or SUVs: The barrier the Institute uses to test bumpers is set 16 to 18 inches off the ground, in keeping with a federal rule that specifies a zone for car bumpers 16 to 20 inches from the ground. The idea is to ensure that car bumpers line up reasonably well so they engage each other in collisions, allowing them to absorb crash energy. But there's a problem in collisions with other vehicles because the rule that applies to cars doesn't cover minivans, pickup trucks, or SUVs. The bumpers on these vehicles often are much higher off the ground, failing to line up with those on cars.

For example, the bumper on the Infiniti G35 luxury car is much lower than the one on the Infiniti FX35. An Institute test involving these vehicles indicates that in a collision into the back of the SUV, the G35 would slide right under the bumper system, especially if the driver were braking hard, which would cause the front end of the car to dip.

"Infiniti equipped this car with a bumper that wouldn't prevent damage in a minor collision with the same company's SUV," Nolan points out. "This makes no sense, and it won't be solved by tinkering with the bumpers on cars alone. The federal rules have to be applied to minivans, pickups, and SUVs too. Only then will we start to see good bumper match-up in collisions at low speeds."

Sky-high parts prices: Even when bumper systems perform adequately to minimize damage in low-speed collisions, the damage that does occur still can empty a consumer's wallet because of the price of the parts needed to restore the vehicle. In the rear full-width test, for example, damage to the A4 was confined to the bumper cover. However, the cost of the cover alone approaches $600. Then it has to be attached to the car body and painted to match.

Headlights were damaged in 15 of the 22 frontal tests the Institute conducted, 8 corner impacts and 7 full-width ones. It cost $847 for the G35's replacement headlight and $1,046 for the one on the Lexus ES, not counting installation charges.

"If an automaker is going to charge this much for a headlight, it ought to do a better job of shielding such an expensive part from damage in a minor bump," Nolan points out.

Put luxury in bumpers too: It wouldn't take much for automakers to reduce the cost of repairing the damage that occurs in low-speed collisions. Nolan points to 3 main things automakers already know how to do and could be doing:

1. Make the bumper bars longer so they protect headlights and other critical and costly equipment at the corners of vehicles. The bars all could be as wide as those on the Volvo S60, which was the only car that limited damage in the front corner test to the bumper cover alone. The rest of the luxury cars sustained damage to fenders and other body parts.

2. Make bumpers taller so they engage the bumpers on higher riding SUVs and pickup trucks instead of underriding them, even during emergency braking.

3. Don't sacrifice function for style by mounting bumpers too close to the car body. This makes for a sleek look, but it doesn't leave much room for absorbing crash energy. Mount bumper bars farther out and use the available space under a bumper cover for energy absorption.

Without these design changes, "we can't say anything good about the bumpers on these luxury cars," Nolan concludes. "There's nothing exemplary about even the best performer, the Saab 9-3. It simply avoided racking up the most damage in any single test and ended up coming out the best of a mediocre lot."

In this video the boyz at Edmund’s Insideline pit Mercedes’ brutal 507Hp 6.3-litre V8 powered CLK 63 AMG Black Series against BMW’s savvy-tech M6 Coupe which is fitted with the same 507Hp strong V10 engine that’s used in the M5. Theoretically, the CLK 63 AMG aims head straight at the forthcoming BMW M3 CSL, but with a hefty $136,000 price tag (vs $109,000 of the specific M6), the Benz hasn’t the comfort to choose with whom it competes with. However, judging from the video, the CLK 63 AMG Black Series gives the M6 more than it bargained for.

BMW Considers Developing Sub-MINI City Car

Thursday, August 02, 2007 | 0 comments » Categories | , , | Bookmark and Share

According to a report from Financial Times, BMW Group is thinking of developing a sub-MINI sized city car as part of a review of its market position and car portfolio. FT supports that the Bavarian carmaker is willing to make this move in order to lower its mostly large-engined fleet’s average carbon dioxide emissions as E.U. lawmakers push ahead with CO2-cutting laws. The newspaper also suggests that if the project gets a go, BMW will most probably use the same platform as the next-generation MINI on its new city car.

If you’re asking our humble opinion, we believe that if BMW doesn’t buy off another carmaker e.g. Volvo, the Germans will definitely go ahead with this project and they will most surely use the MINI’s platform. And the reason will not (only) be CO2 emissions. BMW needs to find a way to expand its front-wheel drive model range in order to justify the cost for the MINI’s platform. Having three versions of the MINI (hatch, Clubman and Cabriolet) is simply just not enough. Also, don’t be surprised if the rumors about BMW and Mercedes developing a new FWD platform in the near future actually come true either.

Safety isn’t (and shouldn’t) only be about occupants. A car also interacts with pedestrians. Nissan on its behalf will try to address this problem with the introduction of a “pop-up engine hood” to help reduce head impact injuries in the event of a pedestrian collision. The new safety feature will make its premier on the all-new Skyline coupe which is set to go on sale in Japan this fall.

According to Nissan, the pop-up hood concept helps minimize serious head injury by creating a protective buffer space between the hood and the engine components underneath. Upon impact with a pedestrian and based on the severity of that impact, a sensor incorporated in the bumper activates the pop-up control-unit which in turn will trigger an explosive actuator that raises the hood. As with all safety features of this kind, it is expected that the "pop-up engine hood" technology will pass into all future Nissan models.

Though it may look like it, this poor BMW Z4 M Coupe hasn’t been visually abused by a bitter girlfriend who wanted to get back at her cheating boyfriend. Actually, you’ll have to pay several thousands of euros to make your standard Z4 M Coupe look like someone spilled a dinosaur egg on it. But hey, look at the bright side; not only do you get a “enterprise-starship” style miniature roof spoiler but AC Schnitzer boosts the straight-six’s power from 343Hp to 350Hp and they also remove the electronic speed restrictor. What else could a man want? -Press release, specs and image gallery after the jump

The concept PROFILE by AC Schnitzer based on the Z4 M Coupé

Take the first ascent of the 8,848 metre high Mount Everest, the expeditions to the poles or the dive into the 11 km deep canyon of the Mariana Trench. There have always been individuals and extreme characters who have pushed our boundaries and discovered new terrain. An extreme region for automotive tuners, where only a few venture, has always been the BMW M-series cars, in particular the uncompromising Z4 M-Coupé, a thoroughbred driving machine.

But the fact that the limits of this extraordinary car are far from reached is evident from the new concept vehicle by AC Schnitzer - the PROFILE - even at first glance. Classic engine tuning hauls the power of the high-revving six-cylinder in-line plant to a robust 350 HP. Not only is a special "active breathing" airbox used, but the engine control unit has been remapped. But power alone isn’t enough to get the maximum from an athletic heart. So the modified rear axle ratio of 3.91:1 provides better sprint capacity, while the perfectly smooth transmission with the AC Schnitzer Short Shift ensures crisp changes by the driver.

And as you listen to the sonorous baritone note of the left/right sports exhaust system with the trapezoid tailpipes, you could be deceived into thinking that the driver is not changing gears, but playing some kind of a musical instrument. A feast for all the senses: Visually the stunning colour combination of white-orange casts its spell and perfectly enhances the exquisite contours of the AC Schnitzer bodykit. From the front skirt with its suggestive cup-wings via the widened wheelarches and flanks with the gill-like vents - as already used on the legendary BMW 507- the dynamic line is drawn over the bulging side skirts to the rear skirt with carbon diffuser.

The whole is crowned by a rear spoiler and a fascinatingly styled roof wing. The forged alloy Type V wheels from the standard AC Schnitzer collection are a work of art in themselves. Filigree design yet with an air of solidity, in size 9.0J x 20" at the front and 10.0J x 20" at the rear, these wheels are the perfect adornment combined with tyres size 235/30 ZR 20 front and 295/25 ZR 20 rear.

But traction alone isn't everything, and the dynamics are supported by the AC Schnitzer suspension with its racing heritage, set up in the Green Hell of the Nürburgring. An aluminium strut brace in "Racing“ style not only catches the eye but limits the torsion of the front body. Thanks to the AC Schnitzer racing seats, the driver always holds position. And the carbon interior trim and pedal set, with decor elements of aluminium, radiate pure racing flair. Could there be a better place to experience the limits of potential?

Performance: 350 HP at 8000 rpm, 370 Nm at 4950 rpm, power upgrade consisting of:

  • special air box, control unit and removal of speed restrictor, engine optics
  • AC Schnitzer rear differential modification, 3,91 : 1

Transmission: AC Schnitzer sports gear change "Short Shift" incl. gear knob

Exhaust: AC Schnitzer dual sports rear silencer left/right incl. chromed exhaust tailpipes, design "Sports Trim"

Suspension: AC Schnitzer Racing suspension, height adjustable incl. lowering AC Schnitzer aluminium strut brace for front axle, design "Racing"

Wheels:

  • AC Schnitzer lightweight forged wheel Type V
  • FA: 9,0J x 20" offset 22 with tyres 235/30 ZR 20
  • RA: 10,0J x 20" offset 13 with tyres 295/25 ZR 20

Bodywork:

  • AC Schnitzer special painting orange - white
  • AC Schnitzer front skirt

Bypassing the world premiere of the Tiguan SUV and six new “Bluemotion” eco-friendly models, the really important news in VW’s Frankfurt Show press release is the announcement of a prototype dubbed “City Expert”. Don’t let the lackluster name fool you since this maybe one of the most important concepts to wear the VW badge in years.

In VW’s own words, “the heart of this sensationally flexible City Expert will beat where the flat-four "Boxer" engine once did, in the Beetle”, thus meaning we’re talking about a rear-engined city car that revives the concept of the original Beetle. As you can see in the press release after the jump, the Germans are being quite secretive about the concept, but word has it that the City Expert forecasts a future global model priced well under 9,000 EUR ($12,000) in Europe and under 7,000 EUR ($9.000) in the developing markets. -Full press release after the jump

Press Release:

Volkswagen at the IAA 2007: Marketing campaign with eight world premieres

  • SUV: World premiere of an agile Tiguan
  • Prototype: World premiere of a slick City Expert
  • BlueMotion: Six new models at a stroke

Wolfsburg, 01 August 2007 – Volkswagen will present its widest product range of all time at the International Automobile Exhibition (IAA) in Frankfurt (13th to 23rd September). Europe's no. 1 will be presenting over fifty models on view in Hall 3.0 – eight of them world premieres. One of the highlights: the Tiguan – an entirely new generation of SUV developed to complement the Touareg. And if all that's not enough: Volkswagen will respond to the official motto of this year's IAA – "see what's driving tomorrow" – with a prototype. The heart of this sensationally flexible City Expert will beat where the flat-four "Boxer" engine once did in the Beetle. When the gates open at the IAA, six new BlueMotion models will also make their debut. From 2008 onward Volkswagen will offer nine vehicles under the BlueMotion label.

Volkswagen will welcome visitors to the IAA in an exposition area of 9,000 square metres. The centrepiece of that will be the Tiguan. It is the world's first production model exclusively equipped with supercharged engines. It offers two particular advantages: lower fuel consumption and still fun to drive. Also new: the remarkably quiet four-cylinder diesel engine with common-rail injection. The two new TDIs produce 103 kW/140 PS and 125 kW/170 PS respectively. Both engines already conform to the Euro 5 exhaust standards that will be introduced in 2009. You will be able to "see what's driving tomorrow" here and now.

Moreover, Volkswagen will unveil six new BlueMotion models at the same time. Therefore, in the course of 2008, there will be at least nine BlueMotion models available. The Volkswagen BlueMotion environmental label will certainly become a byword for effective environmental protection. The versions already available – the Polo BlueMotion (3.8 litres of Diesel consumed per 100 km and 99 g/km CO2) and Passat BlueMotion (5.1 litres of Diesel consumed per 100 km and 136 g/km CO2) – have already redefined the standards of economy in their respective classes.

The Volkswagen press conference will be held on 11th September at 11.00 a.m. in Hall 3.0, on the Volkswagen stand. Dr. Martin Winterkorn will present the new Tiguan there, as well as the prototype of a future compact model

A forum member of the Pug loving site “feline207” managed to snap the production version of the crossover concept, 207 SW Outdoor without any camouflage at all in Paris. Due to be officially introduced at the September Frankfurt Show along with the 207 SW RC (see here), the 207 SW Outdoor retains several elements from the concept like the slightly raised road-clearance, the 6-spoke alloy wheels and the protective plastic-moldings. As expected, Peugeot traded in the concept’s rear-lights, roof-rails and rear-view mirrors with stock parts from the 207 SW. The FWD 207 SW Outdoor will most probably be offered with the same engine range as the standard 207 SW. -More pictures after the jump

British luxury carmaker Bentley took the wraps off its facelifted Continental GT Coupe which features subtle styling, engine and suspension enchantments and most importantly, the addition of a more powerful edition dubbed GT Speed.

Starting with the Continental GT Speed, the new edition is equipped with a revised version of the 6.0-liter Twin-Turbocharged W12 engine that produces 610Hp at 6,000 rpm (9 percent more power than the GT) and a maximum torque of 750Nm (553lb ft) at 1,750 rpm that represents an increase of over 15 percent versus the standard engine. As a result, the GT Speed is not only the most powerful production Bentley ever produced but also the first to top 200mph (322km/h), with a maximum speed of 202mph (326km/h). The GT Speed accelerates from zero to 60mph in 4.3 sec (0-100km/h in 4.5s). -Continued after the jump

Compared to the standard GT, the Speed also gets a sportier suspension set-up sitting 10mm lower at the front and 15mm lower at the rear to improve handling dynamics. Uprated springs and dampers, together with revised software control promise enhance agility and body control. Design-wise and apart from the 20-inch alloys (GT: 19-inch), the GT Speed gets dark-tinted chrome matrix grille to the main and lower air intakes while at the rear, a black lower bumper valance and wider, rifled exhaust tailpipes. Inside the GT Speed gets the 'Mulliner' pack that includes a three-spoke steering wheel.

As for the facelifted Continental GT, subtle changes to the fascia (common to both the GT and the new GT Speed) include the revised front grille, the all-new lower bumper design which features a wider central air intake and the chromed bezels around the headlamps. While the GT's W12 output has remained unchanged at 560Hp, a host of engine and transmission enhancements that include a new crankcase design, a lighter camshaft chain and a new engine management system, promise to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions both by 3.5 per cent. Finally, the 2008 Continental GT features minor chassis, suspension and steering modifications. Both models go on sale in August.
