Not what we’d call innovative since the recipe, “car chased by chick in a chopper and 007 music” is something that we’ve seen more times and with more diverse products than we can even remember. But it’ll have to do for now. -Check out the 2008 Audi A4 official press release and high-res image gallery here

Since neither science nor chemistry was our forte, we’ll use Mazda’s own words to explain: “The biofabric is made of 100 percent polylactic acid, which is a plastic created by combining large numbers of lactic acid molecules that are made from fermented carbohydrates such as plant sugars”.

Huh? Oh, well, to make it simple, Mazda created a durable plant-derived biofabric for vehicle interiors without using any oil-based materials. See that wasn’t so difficult wasn’t it. The Japanese firm plans to use the biofabric for the first time on the seat covers and door trim in the all-new Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid that will be displayed at the Tokyo Motor Show this October. -Press release and images after the jump

Mazda Develops World's First Biofabric Made With 100 Percent Plant-Derived Fiber for Vehicle Interiors

HIROSHIMA, Japan - The world’s first biofabric made with completely plant-derived fibers, suitable for use in vehicle interiors, has been developed by Mazda Motor Corporation in collaboration with Teijin Limited and Teijin Fibers Limited. This newly developed biofabric does not contain any oil-based materials, yet it possesses the quality and durability required for use in vehicle seat covers. Resistant to abrasion and damage from sunlight, in addition to being flame retardant, the new biofabric meets the highest quality standards. Based on this biotechnology, Mazda will strengthen its future research and development on non-food-based materials in consideration of the impact such technologies have on food supplies. Mazda plans to use the biofabric for the seat covers and door trim in the all-new Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid that will be exhibited in October at the Tokyo Motor Show 2007. The all-new Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid will also feature a bioplastic, which Mazda developed in 2006, in the vehicle’s instrument panel and other interior fittings.

All of Mazda’s biomaterials fall under the “Mazda Biotechmaterial” brand name. Mazda is dedicated to continuing its research and development efforts for these environmentally friendly technologies which will help to realize a sustainable society in the future.

This newly developed biofabric has harnessed the latest technologies to control the entire molecular architecture of raw resins to improve fiber strength until the fabric attained sufficient resistance to abrasion and light damage for practical use in vehicle seat covers. The biofabric is made of 100 percent polylactic acid--a plastic created by combining large numbers of lactic acid molecules that are made from fermented carbohydrates such as plant sugars. Mazda developed this new biofabric in collaboration with Teijin Limited and Teijin Fibers Limited, companies with R&D and manufacturing sites in the region near Mazda’s headquarters in Hiroshima. Other crucial qualities necessary for the highest performing fabrics, such as fire retardant properties, were achieved through Mazda’s accumulated experience in surface technologies built up through years of cooperation with several local companies.

Seita Kanai, Mazda’s director and senior executive officer in charge of R&D, said, “Mazda succeeded in developing this 100 percent plant-derived biofabric for use in vehicle interiors by leveraging the technical expertise we have amassed in the Hiroshima area. We are convinced that our new technology, which enables the manufacture of this material without any oil-based resources, will become a cornerstone for future biotechnologies aimed at reducing the burden on the environment. Mazda, working together with our locally-based partners, will continue its research and development programs aimed at achieving a future car society that is eco-friendly.”

As soon as we confirmed that we we’re actually looking at the 2008 Audi A4 and not its predecessor (…), we noticed that one of the vehicles on Audi’s Frankfurt Show stand was badged as the “A4 e Concept”. Apparently “e” stands for both efficient and eco-friendly as the concept is equipped with a brand-new 2.0 TDI turbo-diesel engine, consuming a mere 4,9 litres of fuel for every 100 Km (48,8 mpg). At the same time the “A4 2.0TDi e” features CO2 emissions of just 129 g/km -that's less than the E.U.'s 2012 limit. -Continued after the jump

Other highlights on the “A4 e Concept” include the newly developed 6speed manual gearbox with reduced internal friction, the start/stop system and the recuperation system that converts kinetic energy into electrical energy as the vehicle decelerates. Despite its eco-friendly and frugal nature, the “A4 e Concept” manages to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.3 sec while it achieves a top speed of 215 km/h – 134 mph. Expect Audi to introduce a production version of the A4 e in mid 2008.

Press Release

Just 129 grams of CO2 – the 2.0 TDI e Concept

With the new 2.0 TDI e Concept, Audi is showing just how effective its new Modular Efficiency program is. The sporty middle class saloon undercuts the consumption limit of five litres per 100 km. The A4 2.0 TDI e Concept needs just 4.9 litres for 100 km on the EU cycle. This means CO2 emissions of just 129 g/km – less than the limit that the European Union aims to introduce for vehicle fleets from 2012. With an output of 105 kW / 143 bhp and a peak torque of 320 Nm, the A4 2.0 TDI e Concept is a powerful saloon – for Audi, a dynamic character always goes hand in hand with low consumption.

In this vehicle, Audi has realised a whole package of innovative engineering solutions. Some of these are already in series production on the new Audi A4. Others, such as the start/stop system or the energy recuperation system, will be introduced in the near future.

TDI marries efficiency with dynamism

The 2.0 TDI in the new Audi A4 presents itself in an essentially enhanced form. A common rail injection system supersedes the unit injection pumps used to date, its piezo injectors supplying fuel with a pressure of up to 1,800 bar, allowing extremely fine atomisation in the combustion chambers. This improves fuel combustion and smooth running.

The refined engine develops a powerful 105 kW / 143 bhp of output. Even in the speed range between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm it puts a bullish 320 Nm of torque onto the crankshaft – this mighty pulling power at low revs is a one of the great strengths of the TDI principle. Modified piston geometry improves the thermodynamics in the combustion chambers. Other measures to reduce internal friction and for temperature management further increase fuel efficiency.

On the A4 e Concept, the 2.0 TDI engine is supplemented by the ultra low emission system. That means that this engine not only works highly efficiently, but it is also exceptionally clear and absolutely future-proof: Even today, it undercuts the strictest European emissions levels, which are not expected to come into force until 2014. The ultra low emission system, which makes the TDI the world's cleanest diesel, will go into series production in 2008 as an option on the new Audi A4 3.0 TDI.

Low-friction gearbox

The TDI's power is transmitted onto a newly developed six-speed manual gearbox that is characterised by greatly reduced internal friction. It has been specially tailored for the high-torque of the TDI engine – its transmission ratios are slightly longer in third to sixth gears. Like all Audi gearboxes, its gear changes are playfully light and extremely precise. The gear change indicator in the driver information system encourages an economical driving style. It indicates which gear is selected and if another gear is judged to be better while driving steadily, it will show this as a recommendation.

An especially fast and smooth start

Another important contribution is made by the start/stop system. It avoids the engine running inefficiently when the vehicle is stationary. This is important because much of our day-to-day driving is made up of trips that are shorter than ten kilometres, and these are interrupted by numerous stops at traffic lights.

As soon as the A4 2.0 TDI e Concept comes to a standstill, the gear lever is moved to neutral and the driver takes his foot off the clutch, the TDI is automatically switched off. The engine is restarted when the driver depresses the clutch. The TDI runs up while he is engaging the gear. It has reached idling speed by the time he releases the pedal. A specially developed starter motor turns the engine in little more than two tenths of a second – 60 percent faster than a conventional part, and yet especially comfortable acoustically.

Microhybrid gathers energy when coasting and braking

The recuperation system on board the A4 2.0 TDI e Concept converts kinetic energy into useful electrical energy as the vehicle decelerates. An innovative gel battery is used as the power source for the vehicle electrical system. This is extremely robust even at high loads and when it is heavily discharged, allowing it to achieve a particularly long service life.

When the A4 2.0 TDI e Concept is coasting or braking, the secondary voltage from the D/C converter is run up. The alternator is now able to convert the kinetic energy into electrical energy that is temporarily stored in the gel battery. When the saloon subsequently accelerates again, the battery feeds the energy back, relieving the load on the alternator.

The power steering has also been thoroughly modified – its effectiveness has been improved by around 50 percent because it is now fed hydraulic energy by a demand-controlled vane-cell pump. In contrast to conventional power steering pumps, which constantly recirculate large volumes, it only pumps as much oil as actually needed at that very moment.

On the automatic air conditioning system, Audi uses an innovative, thermostatically controlled refrigerant circuit with an internal heat exchanger. Along with intensive precision work on other components, has greatly improved the efficiency of the system – the new automatic air conditioning system requires 20 percent less fuel that its predecessor model did.

Sporty performance yet highly efficient

The A4 2.0 TDI e Concept glides smoothly and effortlessly through the wind. Its body is fundamentally extremely aerodynamic. Its boot lid has been given a slight additional separation edge. Specially designed alloy wheels improve the airflow across the wheels and wheel arches, while a sporty tuning has lowered the body by 20 millimetres. This modification reduces the frontal area, improving air resistance.

For Audi, efficiency means exactly the same as dynamics. For example, the tyres are configured for light running, but still have a sporty performance – they have the wide, visually attractive 225/50 R17 format. Yet the most impressive evidence of the potential of the A4 2.0 TDI e Concept is found in its performance figures. The middle class saloon sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 9.3 seconds. Its top speed is 215 km/h. A spurt from 80 to 120 km/h in 5th gear needs just 8.7 seconds.

Not only did Fiat have a few of the best looking babes at the Frankfurt Show, but the Italians also had by far the most intriguing stand. In particular, Fiat created a gigantic replica of the new 500, exactly five times larger than the actual car. And that’s not all as the giga 500 incorporated a mini circuit (with music, lights and special films) where you could hop in one of the five available versions of the 500 and take a mini-stride inside the replica. If you happen to visit the Frankfurt Show (11 to 23 Sep.), don’t miss it. -More images after the jump

Apart from the aluminum paint job and the body/chassis mods, it’s most prominent feature is the modified 6cylinder turbocharged engine that can run on E85 (85% bioethanol, 15% petrol).

According to Volvo, the T6 engine produces around 350Hp at 5,500 rpm and 550 Nm or 406 lbs/ft of torque between 1,500 and 4,000 rpm. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h will take around 5.8 sec. -Press release and pictures after the jump

Volvo S80 High Performance version flexes its muscles at SEMA in Las Vegas

German tuning and motor sport experts Heico Sportiv has developed a spectacular high-performance version of the Volvo S80.

With a high-tech aluminium-look exterior and a 350 hp bioethanol engine, the S80 High Performance Concept is destined to be a true attention-grabber at the SEMA show in Las Vegas.

"We wanted to explore how far we could take a special high-performance version of the S80. Heico Sportiv's impressive track record in motor sports and Volvo tuning made them the perfect partner for the job," says Lex Kerssemakers, Senior Vice President Brand, Business and Product Strategy at Volvo Cars. He adds:

"Personally, I think the result is absolutely stunning. Both when it comes to the exterior and interior design as well as the impressive muscle under the bonnet."

The turbocharged T6 engine has been modified to run on E85 (85 percent bioethanol,15 percent petrol) - a biofuel that is becoming increasingly widely available throughout Europe.

The T6 engine in the Heico S80 High Performance Concept boasts around 350 horsepower at 5500 rpm and a massive 550 Nm of torque between 1500 and 4000 rpm. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h will take around 5.8 seconds.

"The engine development is not yet finalized, so we hope to reach an even higher horsepower figure when the car is ready for SEMA," says Heico Sportiv's president Holger Hedtke.

All Wheel Drive and sports suspension

The Heico S80 High Performance Concept features Volvo's electronically controlled All Wheel Drive system with Instant Traction. The car also has specially developed sport suspension. New shocks and springs lower the chassis by 40 millimetres. The 6-pot sport brake system has blue callipers featuring the Heico Sportiv logo, sports brake pads and 355x32 mm discs.

The specially developed 20-inch VOLUTION®X. forged alloy wheels are shod with 255/30R20 tyres from Continental.

"When it comes to the driving experience, we aimed at tuning all the components so we get a dynamic yet harmonious result. In other words, a true sports car experience without losing the luxurious and comfortable touch that is the hallmark of the S80," says Holger Hedtke.

Spectacular aluminium-colour effect

The exclusive aluminium metal-effect colour of the Heico S80 High Performance Concept radiates a distinctive technical look. "To bring out the shiny, "real metal" effect was a major challenge. This type of paint is normally not used to cover a whole car. All told, the bodywork features seven coats of paint. The coat that gives the aluminium effect doesn't allow any touch-ups afterwards, so you have to get it right from the beginning. The whole process takes two weeks," says Holger Hedtke.

All other parts, such as the tailpipe trim, window mouldings, front grill and rub strips are coated with matte finish black chrome. All body parts are handcrafted. The car's body kit has redesigned wide skirts all round. The front features integrated spoiler flaps, three larger air ducts, integrated LED daytime running lights and an integrated sport grille with the Volvo iron mark. The exhaust system is made of stainless steel throughout and the exhaust tailpipes are integrated into the wide rear spoiler. There is also a rear deck spoiler.

Mystic Blue interior

The bespoke interior has full high-quality leather in Mystic Blue with matching blue stitching and Heico Sportiv logo, both on the sport-contoured front seats and the two individual "bucket" seats in the rear. The safety belts and floor-mats are also blue.

There is a sports steering wheel trimmed in leather and a leather-trim gear lever with a silver carbon accent. The extended floating centre stack is covered with silver carbon fibre. The centre stack also features integrated controls for the rear seat entertainment system and a storage space with a handmade blind. All decorative trim elements are made of silver carbon fibre. The illuminated entrance trim in stainless steal and glass features the Heico Sportiv logo

Mazda RX-8 Special Version

Celebrating Mazda’s Rotary Tradition

• Two special body colours, wheel design and 40th anniversary emblem

• Special seat/trim materials, leather stitching and silver shift knob

• Foam-filled cross member and sports suspension with Bilstein dampers

As it did with the MX-5 roadster in 1989, Mazda changed customer expectations of what an affordable sports car should be when it launched the Mazda RX-8 in 2003. It redefined the Mazda sports car with a strong and sporty Zoom-Zoom design that visually shows its performance potential. It created a new class of four-seater sports cars by resurrecting the centre-opening door system – a feature that is just as fresh and innovative today as it was four years ago. And under the bonnet was the naturally- aspirated RENESIS rotary engine. This engine won the International Engine of the Year award in 2003 along with three other category awards in both 2003 and 2004.

Since Mazda RX-8 came to market, Mazda has dominated sales in the European non-premium sports car segment with a share consistently around 18 percent (combined RX-8 and Mazda MX-5 sales).

The Special Edition RX-8

Based on a special version concept presented at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and following the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the rotary engine, Mazda Motor Corporation is issuing a Special Edition RX-8 (depending on market) that adds components to the chassis and body shell, and exterior and interior features , all of which raise the bar on affordable sports cars once again.

Exterior – Special Body Features for Sporty Sophistication

The normal Mazda RX-8 combines classical sports car aesthetics described by its original designers as “athletic tension” that visually communicates performance potential. It is dynamic and sporty with short overhangs, striking fenders and bumpers, and a unique bonnet line. For the Special Edition RX-8, these exterior features are enhanced to celebrate Mazda’s rotary engine history with two specially designed exterior colours – a newly-developed Metropolitan Grey that gives the RX-8’s sporty form a strong touch of sophistication; and Crystal White Pearl that will set it apart on European roads. Enhancing the Special Edition’s look of sporty sophistication is also a new ten-spoke, bright- grey wheel design, new blue-light fog lamps and a 40th anniversary emblem at the back of both front fenders .

Interior – Special Seat/Trim Materials and Cockpit Enhancements

The Mazda RX-8 is known for having a stylish and premium interior ambience that is both sporty and modern. It has four sport seats with superior long-trip comfort and good side support for sporty driving, and headrests in the form of a triangular rotary. In front of the driver is a leather-covered steering wheel and parking brake lever, a triangular rotary- shape shift knob and a tachometer scaled to 10,000 rpm to reflect the high-revving characteristics of it RENESIS rotary engine. For the Special Edition RX-8, the interior has several enhancements that celebrate the car’s premium look and feel. These include seat materials developed for the Special Edition RX-8 with light grey Alcantara ® * in the centre and black leather at the sides , combined with special trim materials in matching colours. For an extra touch of quality, the steering wheel is black leather – to match the sides of the seats – with light stitching to match the colours of the seat middle. And the shift lever is covered in the same black leather with light stitching and features a silver shift knob centre .

Special Foam-Filled Front Suspension Cross Members and Bilstein Sports Suspension

The Mazda RX-8 is one of the best handling cars in its class. It features a front-midship engine layout and rear-wheel drive, which results in a perfect 50/50 weight distribution over the front and rear axles. It also delivers outstanding torsional rigidity with a unique transmission tunnel structure where the upper side of the tunnel is a rigid, closed-section high-mount backbone frame that is joined to the mainframe front and back. For the Special Edition RX-8 – which comes standard with the High Powered RENESIS engine producing 170 kW/231 PS at 8,200 rpm , maximum torque of 211 Nm at 5,500 rpm, 18-inch aluminium wheels, and the short shifting six-speed manual transmission – front suspension cross members are now filled with polyurethane foam for even more quiet operation and sharper handling than the original. And further enhancing the RX-8’s acclaimed handling characteristics is a sports front suspension with special springs and Bilstein dampers all around – only available for the Special Edition – that provides even more sporty driving fun.

Along with the "standard" X6 Concept, BMW also presented a hybrid version of the prototype at the Frankfurt Show. The X6 ActiveHybrid will most likely be available a few months after the market debut of the X6 in mid-2008. The concept’s hybrid system, jointly developed by BMW Group, GM and the (former) DaimlerChryler Group, combines two compact, high-performance electric motors with an electrical continuously variable transmission (ECVT) and it features two operating modes, one optimized for low, the other for high speeds. -Continued after the jump

The car can be driven on electric power only, on the combustion engine alone, or with a combination of both power units. Moreover, the electric motors may also be used for both accelerating and regenerative application of the brakes, in which case the brake forces generated pour into the high-volt energy storage unit. According to BMW, the X6 ActiveHybrid ‘s system helps reduce fuel consumption by up to 20 per cent compared with an equivalent BMW running on a combustion engine alone

PRESS RELEASE: BMW X6 Hybrid Concept

Description in Brief.

Character:

World debut of BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid – combining significant enhancement of efficiency with Sheer Driving Pleasure so typical of BMW.

The close and direct link of concepts combining the new Sports Activity Coupé with innovative BMW ActiveHybrid technology ensures an authentic match of design and technology in every respect. The potential of BMW’s ActiveHybrid system develops its optimum effect in the unique concept of the Sports Activity Coupé. This holistic, all-round approach sets the stage for an all-new driving experience.

The BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid, the BMW in the world of hybrid cars.

BMW ActiveHybrid is far superior to conventional hybrid vehicles in terms of driving dynamics. Its fuel consumption and emission ratings are up to 20 per cent better than on a comparable car with conventional drivetrain technology.

The combination with innovative hybrid technology offers the most sporting and dynamic rendition of a BMW X Car. Design language typical of BMW takes up the superior driving dynamics of the Sports Activity Coupé and visualises this superiority through authentic design and a unique look. Indeed, the extravagant design of the body combines the sporting elegance of a BMW Coupé with the striking DNA of BMW X and provides a clear reference to the innovative drive concept.

Technology:

The driving experience in BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid corresponds to the character of a typical BMW based on supreme dynamism and performance on the road. The car responds directly, spontaneously and with outstanding precision to the driver’s commands, offering the driver perfect feedback at all times through touch effects and acoustic signals, like on a car with a conventional combustion engine.

BMW ActiveHybrid is a particular highlight of BMW EfficientDynamics, BMW’s trendsetting development strategy for today’s world. Introducing this technology, BMW is taking the next step in the ongoing reduction of fuel consumption and emissions. BMW ActiveHybrid is based on a modular concept following the strategy of “Best of Hybrid“ to integrate the most appropriate, optimum components in each case in different concepts.

Interacting with the two-mode active transmission, the concept, through electrical support, offers two operating modes, one for setting off and driving at low speeds, one for higher speeds. This ensures optimum use of the torque generated as a function of driving conditions.

The innovative two-mode active transmission allows variable power transmission via the power split incorporating planetary gearsets. In addition, the active transmission incorporates an electric drive system and enables the vehicle to drive at fixed transmission ratios within one system. This combines the driving dynamics and efficiency of the combustion engine and the electric drive system in an innovative, intelligent manner.

Exterior design:

The powerful presence of the car’s body forms an ideal match with the flat, sleek flow of the greenhouse roofline. Indeed, this flowing roofline is a characteristic feature of the car’s coupé silhouette, just like the short front overhang, the long wheelbase and the long rear overhang.

In its design, BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid boasts all the DNA and genes so characteristic of the BMW X philosophy. The visual balance of the front and rear wheels to be admired clearly from the side makes a clear reference to BMW xDrive, BMW’s intelligent all-wheel-drive technology.

The second element dominating the design of the body is the clear orientation to the wheels, the muscular wheel arches and the large wheels clearly bearing testimony to the stable position and roadholding of the car.

The dynamically rising contour line at the side and the growing distance between the shoulder and the sill-line as the vehicle moves back create a dynamic wedge shape.

The striking front view with a clear focus on the vehicle’s width again provides the typical look of a BMW X car further emphasised by the extra-large BMW kidney grille also serving as the air intake with its robust slats.

The engine compartment lid comes with clearly shaped contours sub-divided by sharp lines and tapering towards the BMW kidney grille, as well as a powerful curvature at the top with that striking BMW powerdome.

Through their unique shape and design, the D-pillars provide a clear expression of power and stability. The innovative design of the rear lights, in turn, emphasises the sheer width of the car, while horizontal lines highlight the wide track.

The underfloor protection panels front and rear are made of brushed aluminium, the rear underfloor panel moving out when required and covering the tailpipes on BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid while driving on electric power only.

Door cutout trim with blue stripes and the name “BMW ActiveHybrid” clearly refer to the unique drive concept of this equally unique vehicle. The light colour of the body, in turn, forms a clear contrast to the dark window graphics, and the 21-inch wheels come in innovative, three-dimensional rim design.

Unique and Only from BMW:Hybrid Technology with Sheer Driving Pleasure. BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid.

An innovative vehicle concept and equally innovative drivetrain technology are now coming together in a unique car the world has never seen before: BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid is the world’s first Sports Activity Coupé to feature a special concept of hybrid drive likewise never seen before – and all this from Germany’s premium car manufacturer.

The result is the first BMW in the hybrid world, BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid combining Sheer Driving Pleasure with significant enhancement of all-round efficiency. Through its drive concept alone, BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid allows far greater driving dynamics than a conventional hybrid car and at the same time reduces fuel consumption by up to 20 per cent versus a comparable car running on a combustion engine alone.

The innovative drivetrain and the unique concept of the Sports Activity Coupé unparalleled the world over form an ideal match. BMW ActiveHybrid technology has indeed been developed especially for a particularly dynamic car in this segment and for extensive use far beyond city traffic.

In terms of its size, character and driving dynamics, the BMW Sports Activity Coupé is simply ideal for bringing out the full potential of BMW ActiveHybrid technology, combining an elegant and dynamically flowing roofline with the features so typical of a BMW X car. In its design it clearly bears out the full DNA of BMW X, while interpreting the character of these cars in a uniquely sporting manner.

Combining the qualities of electric drive and BMW driving dynamics to provide an unprecedented driving experience.

BMW ActiveHybrid for the first time combines the combustion engine and two high-performance electric motors to allow use of the greater efficiency of hybrid technology over a much larger speed range than with a conventional hybrid vehicle. A further unique point is the driving experience provided by BMW ActiveHybrid reflecting the specific features and characteristics of electric drive together with the proven features of a combustion engine from BMW.

Responding directly and immediately to the driver’s commands when setting off, the electric drivetrain contributes its special qualities right from the start. Then, continuing the process of acceleration, BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid offers a perfect symbiosis of the drivetrain performance required and appropriate touch-based and acoustic feedback to the driver never seen before on a hybrid vehicle. The result is a driving experience at all speeds with that dynamic development of power and performance so typical of a BMW engine interacting with the particularly precise and fast-acting automatic transmission.

BMW ActiveHybrid: the next step in the BMW EfficientDynamics development strategy.

Offering enhancement of both all-round economy and driving dynamics, BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid fits perfectly into the BMW EfficientDynamics development strategy. Indeed, implementing this strategy with full consis-tency, BMW is able to offer cars in all segments through the current model range ranking right at the top against the competition in terms of both performance and efficiency.

BMW ActiveHybrid is a firm part of the BMW EfficientDynamics development strategy. Introducing this technology, BMW is taking the next step in consis-tently reducing both fuel consumption and emissions. BMW ActiveHybrid is based on a modular principle following the strategy of “Best of Hybrid” to integrate the optimum components in each case in various vehicle concepts. And pursuing this strategy, BMW, with its first full-hybrid car, is now taking the next step towards lasting and sustainable mobility based on Sheer Driving Pleasure.

BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid is the result of the consistent development of attractive vehicle concepts and drivetrain technologies. Inventing the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), BMW has already revolutionised the market by creating a complete, brand-new segment where previously there was only the sports utility vehicle (SUV). And given their supreme agility and driving dynamics, both the BMW X5 and the BMW X3 have now gained a dominating position in this segment.

Now the concept of a Sports Activity Coupé shows how the range of BMW X models so successful the world over might be enlarged by another exclusive variant, while at the same time presenting a further possibility of experiencing the sporting performance so typical of the brand in completely new style.

A further highlight is BMW’s outstanding competence in the area of drivetrain development, setting the basis for combining an innovative driving experience with outstanding efficiency. Once again, therefore, BMW is becoming the trendsetter in a market segment which shows particularly dynamic growth.

A hybrid car with that typical BMW character requires innovative technology.

The objective to combine that Sheer Driving Pleasure so typical of BMW with a significant reduction of fuel consumption and emissions in BMW’s first full hybrid, called for the development of innovative technology offering a synthesis of the combustion engine and the electric motor.

To make this process of development as efficient as possible, the BMW Group has joined forces with General Motors and DaimlerChrysler to form the Global Hybrid Cooperation serving to develop the next generation of hybrid drive systems. These three equal partners pool their know-how and resources in the GM, DaimlerChrysler and BMW Hybrid Development Center in Troy (Michigan, USA, concentrating in the process on a flexible system concept allowing each of the companies involved to integrate the particular concept, design and construction of their cars in the new technology, focusing on the specific features of each brand. Precisely this is why the technology of the two-mode active transmission created through this cooperation is part the BMW ActiveHybrid modular development system.

Optimised use of energy and superior power in every situation.

The innovative power transmission featured by BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid combines two compact, high-performance electric motors with a transmission using fixed transmission ratios. These drive systems are connected to one another by three planetary gearsets allowing a power split covering the drive forces of the combustion engine and the electric motors in two transmission ranges and thus ensuring a level of variability quite impos-sible on a conventional hybrid drivetrain thanks to the combination of the two drive sources able to provide optimum power and maximum efficiency under all driving conditions and power requirements from the driver.

The system referred to on account of its two operating modes as the two-mode active transmission also comprises a high-performance battery, power electronics with an integrated inverter module, and the cables required.

The two-mode active transmission is based on an ECVT electrical continu-ously variable transmission. The two operating modes, one of which has been optimised for low, the other for high speeds, are supplemented by fixed transmission ratios.

The two power-split ECVT sections allow the drivetrain to run at continu-ously variable speeds and ensure full, highly efficient hybrid functions throughout the complete operating range of the car, the innovative system in BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid thus serving to reduce fuel consumption by up to 20 per cent compared with a comparable BMW running on a combustion engine alone.

Given the two-mode system, the electric motors are furthermore very compact in their dimensions, facilitating integration into the overall vehicle as well as a minimum increase in weight, which is lower in the case of BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid than with conventional hybrid cars offering comparable power.

BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid can be driven on electric power only, on the combustion engine alone, or with a combination of both power units. Depending on driving conditions, the electric motors may also be used for both accelerating and regenerative application of the brakes, in which case the brake forces generated when coasting and when applying the brakes flowi to the high-volt energy storage unit to provide an increase in electric power.

This energy subsequently available for further use need not be generated by the combustion engine and is therefore available virtually free of charge.

Already using this principle in a similar manner on production cars featuring Brake Energy Regeneration, BMW is able to ensure efficient energy management and maintain the battery at a high charge level. On the road, the support provided by the electric motors in this way referred to as “boosting” serves, first, to give the car incomparable spontaneity and a direct response and, second, to significantly reduce fuel consumption.

BMW ActiveHybrid comes in where conventional hybrid drive reaches its limit.

Conventional hybrid systems allow efficient motoring only in relatively small or medium-sized vehicles at relatively low speeds. This is because most of the power coming from the combustion engine has to be conveyed most of the time via the electrical path of the transmission and because of the use of a high level of electric power. A car with enhanced dynamics, performance and running speeds would therefore require a larger combustion engine calling for less efficient, larger and heavier electric motors.

In the power split drive mode, also referred to as the output branched concept, one of the two electric motors acts as a generator, converting some of the engine’s power into electrical current subsequently fed to the battery or the second electric motor. The second electric motor then converts such power coming from the first electric motor or from the battery back into mechanical power for the output drive shaft on the transmission.

Two-mode technology varies the balance of electrical and mechanical energy on the respective paths for optimum efficiency.

A further point is that a conventional hybrid drive system does not come with fixed mechanical transmission ratios, which would serve to optimise fuel consumption. Instead, conventional hybrid drivetrains use a continuously variable transmission, with the disadvantage that the actual requirement for performance and load feedback from the car are separated from one another, thus failing to provide a dynamic driving impression.

The two-mode active transmission, by contrast, overcomes and eliminates the disadvantages of a conventional hybrid drivetrain. It reduces the share of power flowing through the electrical branch of the transmission throughout a broad range of transmission ratios. Through its power split in two transmission ranges, the two-mode active transmission therefore provides the energy of both electric motors in an ideal form tailored to current driving conditions.

BMW ActiveHybrid: the result of years of research.

The principle of the two-mode active transmission in BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid forms a significant milestone in BMW’s ActiveHybrid strategy, fulfilling the demands made by a broad range of customers looking for a dynamic, economical and responsible form of motoring.

To reach this goal BMW pursues a clear-cut “Best of Hybrid” strategy enabling use of the optimum components under a modular principle within a wide range of different vehicle concepts planned for the future. Parallel to the Global Hybrid Cooperation, the BMW Group has therefore entered into yet another joint venture with DaimlerChrysler, developing components for hybrid drive in the luxury performance saloon.

BMW started to develop hybrid drive many years ago, long before the foundation of the Global Hybrid Cooperation. Indeed, BMW tested the electric drivetrain as early as in the late 1980s, for example in the BMW E1. And the BMW Group has been conducting research on hybrid technology and its various options for more than 15 years, making this technology and the results already obtained a firm part of the BMW X5 EfficientDynamics development strategy.

In the meantime the BMW Group has presented several hybrid vehicle concepts, starting with a hybrid car in 1995 based on the BMW 518i. In particular, the outstanding potential of this drive technology has been proven in the BMW X5 EfficientDynamics presented in 2003 and the BMW Concept X3 EfficientDynamics shown to the world in 2005.

Introducing BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid, BMW is proudly presenting the highest degree of maturity in hybrid technology seen so far. Indeed, this technology offers everything it takes to combine extremely efficient motoring with that Sheer Driving Pleasure so typical of BMW.

A clear sign of the special status of the BMW ActiveHybrid concept is the presentation of this technology in combination with a brand new type of vehicle: BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid is the unusually attractive vision of a truly innovative vehicle virtually predestined for such cutting-edge drivetrain technology.

A thrilling team: BMW ActiveHybrid and the world’s first Sports Activity Coupé.

BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid establishes a new benchmark right from the start through the innovative combination of design and concept features. Four doors and the smooth, dynamic coupé roofline interact with a high window line and extra-muscular wheel arches ensuring permanent presence and a perfect balance of the front and rear axle as a clear reference to all-wheel drive.

At the front BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid is dominated by design elements symbolising the vehicle’s dynamic orientation to the road, while from the side the vehicle’s proportions are particularly elegant and well-balanced. The short front body overhang emphasises the dynamic character of the car, the long overhang at the rear highlights the stretched and sleek appearance of the vehicle.

Moved far to the back and with the roofline dropping down visibly and continuously from the B-pillar, the greenhouse, together with the high window line, ensures flat and low-slung window graphics.

The roofline flows down gently to the contour lip at the rear, finally merging into a slight upward swing perfecting the coupé line and at the same time optimising the car’s streamlining.

The rear look of BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid is split by horizontal lines making the car look wider and emphasising its stable grip on the road.

A muscular bumper and the protective cover for the underfloor are further classic design elements characteristic of a BMW X Car. And last but not least, the proportions so typical of a coupé are borne out here in particular style typical of a BMW X Car, inter alia through the muscular and elegant shoulders.

A typical BMW also in design.

BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid is clearly recognisable as a BMW from every angle. All design features clearly bear out the language of BMW design, with the focus primarily on those sculptural lines so characteristic of all BMW X models.

The front, side and rear body sections flow smoothly and directly into one another, with additionally highlighting various design elements typical of the brand ranging from the BMW kidney grille through the dual round headlights with their cut contour and the powerful contour line at the side all the way to the horizontal lines at the rear.

Following the usual philosophy of a BMW X Car, the wheel arches show slightly square contours offering space for 21-inch light-alloy wheels in Y-spoke design created especially for BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid. This is indeed a brand-new rendition of such three-dimensional rims with the individual spokes showing recessed surfaces not only at the top, but also further down towards the inner sections of the wheel.

The exterior mirrors on BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid are likewise brand-new in their design, a white, shimmering row of lights standing out between the lower element finished in body colour and the upper section of the mirror cap made of aluminium. Supplementing the corona rings in the headlights so typical of BMW, these additional lights also provide a daytime light function.

The unique character of BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid is also borne out by the design of the rear lights where the L-shape so typical of a BMW X Car is re-interpreted in a particularly dynamic, sweeping motion. Extending far into the side panels, the rear lights also serve to emphasise the overall width of the car in its night design.

Front and rear: clear signals for efficient motoring.

BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid proudly presents its unmistakable design also through truly authentic, unique features clearly visible at very first sight. Hence, through its look alone this concept car arouses the greatest expec-tations of the driving experience in such a Sports Activity Coupé. It clearly underlines the robust character and superior traction of a BMW X Car in combination with dynamic driving qualities never seen before in this segment.

The unique character of this drivetrain concept is also expressed through the design of BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid: Not only the door cutout strips with their blue, illuminated “BMW ActiveHybrid” marking and the strongly contrasting colour scheme combining the paintwork with the dark window graphics confirm the special status of this vehicle, but also other, truly unique and innovative design features at the back of the car.

As soon as the electric motors take over in full and provide all the drive power required, a clear signal for optimised combustion and emission ratings is proudly displayed at the back, since the underfloor protection panel made of brushed aluminium both front and rear is a moving element on BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid: So as soon as the vehicle is running entirely on electric power, the rear protection panel may be moved up to cover the two tailpipes on the exhaust system as long as they are not required for their normal purpose.

The innovative philosophy of BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid clearly proves that large and dynamic vehicles may also be driven economically and with a clear focus on the environment, at the same time reaching new horizons in terms of driving pleasure and aesthetic design.

BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid thus offers not only a particularly high standard of efficiency, but also enhanced driving dynamics, this concept meeting the high standards of BMW EfficientDynamics in every respect. Indeed, BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid ensures progress on all levels – in terms of driving dynamics, in its all-round economy, and in design. Sheer Driving Pleasure and the unique experience of particularly efficient motoring therefore come out clearly at very first sight.

Frankfurt Review: 2008 Mazda6

Thursday, September 13, 2007 | 0 comments » Categories | , , | Bookmark and Share

To answer your first question; yes, the all-new Mazda6 actually looks as good in person as it does in the press pictures that leaked into the web a week ago. We assume your next question will be about the interior. Well, its spacious, well built, it has a neat looking instrument panel but we weren’t exactly thrilled about its overall design which isn’t much of a departure from the current “6”. Also we would have liked to see larger quantities of soft-touch plastics in the cabin but ok, you can’t have it all. -Continued: Click "Read More" below

Design apart, the new Mazda6’s highlights include its slightly larger dimensions (65 mm longer, 15 mm wider, 5 mm taller, with a 50 mm longer wheelbase), a new 2.5L petrol engine with 170 PS and improved 1.8 and 2.0L petrol engines with improved fuel efficiency and CO 2 levels along with a 2.0 turbodiesel (140 PS). Moreover, despite being slightly larger than its predecessor, thanks to thorough weight reduction measures, Mazda announces a vehicle weight reduction of up to 35 kg or 77 lbs. And how about the US market? Well, according to Mazda’s own words, “there will be a dedicated new Mazda6, designed and engineered specifically for N. America. More information will be provided during Summer 2008”.

Zoom-Zoom Evolution - the All-New Mazda6

We are very pleased to introduce the evolved all-new second- generation Mazda6 at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show.

As programme manager of the first-generation Mazda6, the first embodiment of the Zoom-Zoom initiative, I devoted myself to the development of a “global car“ that would define how Mazda’s unique character should develop. It was a challenge to create a car that would stand out even on Germany’s autobahns, which are the ultimate test for cars in terms of beauty, enjoyment, practicality and comfort. To achieve this, we aimed at comprehensive innovation covering design, packaging, platform and powertrain. Developed with this determination, the original Mazda6 significantly raised the bar for CD-segment car design and boosted Mazda’s evolving brand image.

In March 2007, we announced “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom,“ a programme aimed at engineering cars with an enhanced harmony between driving pleasure and paying more attention to safety and the environment – an essential effort in the evolution of Zoom-Zoom.

The all-new Mazda6 inherits the first-generation model’s individuality and excellence and, through careful consideration of our customers’ feedback and demands, has become even more desirable. The new model shows dramatic advances in distinctive design, exceptional functionality, and responsive handling and performance – the three essential elements of Mazda’s DNA. I believe that Mazda’s determination to build cars that “look inviting to drive, are fun to drive, and make you want to drive them again“ while also advancing environmental and safety performance is perfectly embodied in the new Mazda6. Look for a great deal more from our advanced Zoom-Zoom.

Director, Senior Managing Executive Officer in Charge of Research and Development

1. Summary

Mazda at the Frankfurt Motor Show 2007

World premiere: All-New Mazda6 – Zoom-Zoom Evolution

Taking centre stage at the Mazda stand at this year’s Frankfurt show is the world premiere of the all-new Mazda6, which is the company’s second new-generation car to be developed from the ground up. As it did when it was first launched in 2002, the all-new Mazda6 is poised to set a new standard in its class. It is more refined, more mature, more premium with exquisite quality – and represents an evolution of Zoom-Zoom.

The Three Key Values of the Zoom-Zoom Evolution Concept

Zoom-Zoom evolution is the concept behind the all- new Mazda6. Along with enhanced environmental and safety performance, the car has a more emphatic Mazda character in its design, dynamic performance, packaging and craftsmanship. Mazda adopted the following key values to embody the development concept:

Key Value One – Emotional and Sporty Design

An engaging styling and dynamic performance creates a sense of delight and kizuna – a Japanese word that implies strong emotional ties such as those found between people – when the owner looks at or drives the Mazda6. Its captivating, sporty styling connects with the driver emotionally. It is also 65 mm longer, 15 mm wider, 5 mm taller, with a 50 mm longer wheelbase (sedan and hatchback) for more room on the inside and one of the widest boot openings in the segment, that makes the new Mazda6 a delight to use on a daily basis.

Key Value Two – Exclusive Experience

Exquisite craftsmanship enhances the emotional connection between the customer and the car, adding to the delight of ownership. Exquisite and high quality craftsmanship makes drivers and passengers feel good. On the outside, body gaps are greatly reduced for a look of solid quality and on the inside higher quality materials are introduced for a greatly improved premium feel. And of course the Mazda6 is supremely comfortable, with space and features for relaxed confidence.

Key Value Three – Insightful Package

The balance of good looks and versatile packaging brings delight to daily driving. Superb balance between engaging, sporty styling and a comfortable space. Simple, easy to use, well-thought out driver interfaces and storage space. This includes an evolution of Mazda’s Karakuri rear seat system for the hatchback and estate. Besides delivering one- touch seat-drop function from a latch in the boot panel, the system now includes an all-new boot tonneau cover for the estate that automatically moves up when the rear liftgate is opened.

Driving Dynamics

The development theme for the Mazda6’s dynamics was ”driving performance that creates oneness between the car and driver. ” This was realized by an emotionally appealing, sporty performance feel, plus handling and brake performance that respond accurately to the driver’s intentions. This was achieved by a series of new features including a new, six-point mounting system for the high- mount double wishbone front suspension , the use of electric power assisted steering for a more rigid steering feel with less transmission of disturbance from the road, lowering of the car’s coefficient of drag (Cd) to 0.27 (down from 0.30) for the sedan and hatchback, and to Cd 0.28 (down from 0.32) for the estate, and by reducing vehicle weight despite the new Mazda6’s larger dimensions . The solid sense of security created by the confident, predictable handling is central to the Zoom-Zoom evolution concept embodied in new Mazda6.

Enhanced Engine Line-Up

A new 2.5-litre petrol engine has been developed from the previous 2.3-litre unit. The MZR 2.5 has a bigger bore and a longer stroke, plus freer-flowing intake and exhaust ports which together improve low and mid-range torque by 10 percent. Power is 170 PS. Also available are the existing 1.8 and 2.0-litre petrol engines and the MZR-CD 2.0 turbo diesel, carried over from the previous Mazda6.

Safety

Improving running, turning and stopping achieves stress- free driving performance that gives the driver predictable control of the vehicle, so every Mazda6 driver will be in a safe frame of mind. Besides Mazda’s state-of-the-art active safety systems – including large disc brakes, ABS, dynamic stability control (DSC), electronic traction control (TCS) and brake assist (standard in Europe) – and a passive safety package with Mazda’s stiff and strong Triple-H body shell and six airbags (standard in Europe), there are further features to help the Mazda6 avoid an accident or protect its occupants if an accident is unavoidable. These include Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS), parking sensor, an extensive field of vision, Mazda’s first active head restraints , crushable brake and clutch pedals and extensive pedestrian protection measures.

2. World Premiere: All-New Mazda6

Kizuna Brings Greater Satisfaction

“Zoom-Zoom Evolution” – this expression represents the commitment by every development team member to show the world a further evolved Zoom-Zoom from the first generation Mazda6.

With this expression we delivered an all-new Mazda6, which fully embodies the progressing of Mazda’s product development philosophy.

While deepening the kizuna or “emotional connection” with the development team, I came to appreciate this connection with the Mazda6 itself. Kizuna implies strong emotional ties. I firmly believe that together with the enhanced new technology and realization of high levels of performance, it is just as important to realize a strong kizuna between the car and the driver coming from the sense of reliance, comfort and affinity with the car.

I would like to present a kizuna experience with the all-new Mazda6. I believe this car can continue to lead the CD segment with an experience that only Mazda can provide.

Zoom-Zoom Evolution

• More refined, more mature, more premium with exquisite quality

• Designed to make the driver feel at one with the car with linear, intuitive responses and new levels of handling and ride

• New 2.5-litre petrol engine delivers exceptional response from generous torque

Mazda signalled its rebirth back in 2002 with the first Mazda6, a sleek, stylish and highly successful car, which embodied the company’s Zoom-Zoom spirit of driving pleasure. Since then, it has been one of Mazda Motor Europe’s best-selling cars with a total of over 440,000 units registered (through May 2007). More than a quarter of all Mazda6s have found owners in Germany during this period, at just under 120,000 units, followed by the UK with around 72,700 units, Russia with about 31,200 units and Italy with over 27,700 units. With approximately 38 percent share each, the hatchback and estate are Europe’s most popular Mazda6 body styles with approximately 38 percent of all Europeans preferring the 2.0-litre diesel engine as their Mazda6 choice.

Mazda6 has proven to be a pillar of reliability, and now, here at the Frankfurt Motor Show, five years and over 100 industry awards later, Mazda unveils a new, more refined, more premium Mazda6. Set to become the new benchmark in its class, the new Mazda6 will be available in three body types: sedan, hatchback and estate

The Three Key Values of the Zoom-Zoom Evolution Concept

Zoom-Zoom evolution is the concept behind the new Mazda6. Along with enhanced environmental and safety performance, the car has a more emphatic Mazda character in its design, dynamic performance, packaging and craftsmanship. Mazda adopted the following key values to embody the development concept.

Emotional and Sporty

• Captivating, sporty styling connects with the driver emotionally

• The driving feel creates oneness between the car and driver

Exclusive Experience

• Exquisite and high quality craftmannship makes drivers and passengers feel good.

• The Mazda6 is supremly comfortable, with space and features for relaxed confi dence.

Insightful Package

• Suberb balance between engaging, sporty styling and a comforable space.

• Simple, easy to use, well-thought out driver interfaces and storage space.

Key Value One: EMOTIONAL AND SPORTY

Engaging styling and dynamic performance creates a sense of delight and kizuna (strong emotional ties) when the owner looks at or drives the new Mazda6.

Design

Chief designer Youichi Sato describes the design theme for the new Mazda6 as “Bold and Exquisite.” The design is an evolved Zoom-Zoom form, which cleverly combines two seemingly contradicting ideas of strength and delicate grace through an expression of Japanese aesthetics. While inheriting the ‘athletic’ design that was key to the signature Mazda look of the previous model, the new Mazda6 is yet a stronger statement of driving dynamism. Its designers also worked on a combination of playfulness and dignity to create a new expression of “cool,” aimed at moving the Mazda6 to the top of its class. Youichi Sato states, “it is vitally important that the new Mazda6 confidently embodies a Japanese design identity . And it must still look fresh in 10 years’ time.”

Advanced Exterior Styling Based on Japanese Aesthetics

The design theme “Bold and Exquisite” is embodied in the new Mazda6’s sporty styling that is sure to turn heads. “Japanese aesthetics give new Mazda6 its unique visual identity,” says Sato. “Rather than being derived from traditional sculpted forms, it stands apart from its rivals by straightforwardly expressing the Japanese aesthetic sense to embody a new and advanced character.”

The exterior has a unique character, expressed by the interplay of discreetly flowing curves and prominent edges from the front end through the fenders, and through the taut curves that lend richness and strength to the rear view. The door panels placed between the sharp top and bottom character lines convey an expression of beauty from simplicity . Then there’s the exquisiteness of detail evident everywhere in the tsukurikomi (inbuilt quality). Combined, these elements of beauty create an advanced, emotion-pleasing character that could only be found in a Mazda.

As before, there are three body styles: hatchback, sedan and estate . The five-door hatchback symbolizes the new Mazda6’s sporty and sophisticated nature with a flowing, coupé-style silhouette and a six side-window cabin design. The sedan plays down its three-box form with its tautly- arched cabin and short, high tail, giving it a fastback look clearly related to that of the hatchback. The estate version features three-dimensional curves that give volume and tension to the side and rear view to achieve a level of stylish design, rare in an estate.

Interior Design – Driving Enjoyment, Secure Feeling, High Quality

The sporty and sophisticated interior design perfectly expresses the “Bold and Exquisite” design theme. For the sporty aspect, the designers created a snug, cockpit-like driving environment with a relaxed driving position, clear instruments and intuitive controls to support it. The design of the dashboard and door trim builds an exquisite contrast between gracefulness and sharpness and mechanical dignity to yield a space where the driver and passengers travel in pleasure, comfort and calmness, helped by the way the facia top curves away from the occupants and seems to float above the structure beneath.

Richly curved surfaces create depth by casting controlled shadows to convey a sense of dignity and high quality feel . New textured paint, sophisticated materials and controlled glossiness add to the air of craftsmanship, along with the microfine accuracy with which the components fit together.

Driving Dynamics

The development theme for the Mazda6’s dynamics was “Driving performance that creates oneness between the car and driver. ” This was realized by driving dynamics, steering, handling, and brake performance that respond accurately to the driver’s intentions. Also, the further enhanced high- quality ride and quietness provide a sense of security in accordance with the feeling of oneness between the car and the driver. This solid sense of security created by the confident, predictable handling is central to the Zoom-Zoom evolution concept embodied in the new Mazda6.

Enhanced Engine Line-Up

A new 2.5-litre petrol engine has been developed from the previous 2.3-litre unit. The MZR 2.5 has a bigger bore and a longer stroke, plus freer-flowing intake and exhaust ports which together improve torque in the frequently used range by approximately 10 percent . This assures a more linear acceleration feel, nimbler driving and more precise response. Power is 170 PS . Also available are the enhanced 1.8 and 2.0-litre petrol engines and the MZR-CD 2.0 turbo diesel , carried over from the previous Mazda6.

Advanced Six-Speed Manual Transmission

The six-speed manual transmission offers an especially precise shift operation with built-in positive stops for the extremes of the gear lever‘s movements. Also, with the counter weight, a light and smooth operation feel was pursued. The synchronisers between 5th and 6th gears are enlarged to lower the shift force required during high-speed driving by 15 percent compared to the previous version.

Responsive, Confidence-Inspiring Suspension System

Whether driving in the city or on the motorway, the suspension system delivers a responsive and reassuring drive. The high- mounted double-wishbone front suspension is mounted on a subframe now attached to the body at six points instead of four , for a further refined steering stability. This dramatically reduces road noise and improves ride comfort because it allows the use of more compliant suspension bushes.

In the multi-link rear suspension , the front pivot of the trailing link is now placed higher to reduce tail-lift under braking, and the dampers are mounted more upright to improve the leverage acting on them and thus their responsiveness. These modifications enhance both handling stability and ride comfort.

Electric Power Steering for Sportiness and Enhanced Environmental Performance

In order to achieve optimal steering assist at various speeds, such as comfortable handling at low speed and stable and rigid handling at high speed, the former hydraulic power steering is replaced with an electric system. Also, to give a more natural steering feel , special attention was paid to reduce the inertia level. Similar to the Mazda RX-8 the motor is mounted on the steering rack and has further evolved with a brushless motor. Also, the fuel economy is improved by approximately two percent compared to the former hydraulic power steering.

Powerful, Progressive, Responsive Brake System

The new Mazda6 is fitted with larger front brake discs and a larger-diameter master cylinder to enhance the performance level, and brake feel is optimised by various brake tuning measures. The result is a brake system with a very rigid and linear feel, controllable brake performance that conforms to the driver’s intentions. The stopping distance from 100 km/h is 39 m on dry ground, among the best in the segment (Mazda in-house measurement)

Lightweight Body with Greater Rigidity

Besides achieving high body rigidity , Mazda engineers worked on reducing weight to further improve dynamic performance and fuel economy. Reinforcement at key points and the widespread use of high-tensile and ultra- high-tensile steel brought significant increase in torsional stiffness , up by 30 percent for the hatchback, 25 percent for the estate and 14 percent for the sedan. Despite this, the body shell’s weight is greatly reduced to class leading levels due to the increased percentage by weight of high-tensile and ultra-high-tensile steel sheet and an optimal layout created by using CAE technology.

Aerodynamics Among the Segment‘s Best

Attractive styling and aerodynamic efficiency go hand-in- hand with the Mazda6. From the early stages of development, Mazda engineers utilized simulation testing to the fullest in order to improve their initial designs, and then carefully fine-tuned them with prototypes and the wind tunnel. In the end, they achieved a remarkable drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.27 for the hatchback and sedan versions and 0.28 for the estate . New horseshoe-shaped air deflectors ahead of the front wheels ensure adequate brake cooling despite the low Cd. Fore-and-aft lift balance is also optimised, keeping the car stable and firmly grounded at high speed.

Key Value Two: EXCLUSIVE EXPERIENCE

Exquisite craftsmanship enhances the emotional connection between the customer and the car, adding to the delight of ownership

Customers will form a kizuna bond with the new Mazda6 for many reasons. These include a heightened sense of quality, ride comfort and quietness, as well as top-level environmental and safety performance. Adding to this is the refined, high- quality build that is part of the craftsman’s spirit of hospitality, creating a comfortable space and equipment levels which support driver confidence.

Delight of Ownership Through Detailed Craftsmanship

“Tsukurikomi (inbuilt quality)” is one of the three pillars of Mazda’s distinctive craftsmanship. In line with this, the feeling of quality is greatly enhanced for all textures and the seats are upholstered with optional (standard for some grades) high-grade leather.

The second, “functional beauty” requirement for Mazda craftsmanship is served by such measures as optimizing the driving position by setting the steering wheel angle at 21 degrees, a more upright position than on the previous model, to give the driver greater comfort and a better sense of unity with the vehicle.

And to promote the third pillar, “customer delight,” an advanced welcome mode turns on the panel lights in order of precedence, from lower to upper, suggesting to the driver that the car is waking up and getting ready to go. A heartbeat effect around the centre display is also an example of the interface between the car and the driver, along with Action Illumination in which the selected switch lights up when activated and then fades down.

New Technology Keeps the Driver in Touch

Mazda’s new CF-Net (cross functional network) features a combination of switches on the steering wheel , which provide integrated control of navigation, audio, air conditioning, driving information , and other systems through simple, smooth operation and a centralised display at the top of the instrument panel to minimise movement of the driver’s line of sight.

The driver and passenger benefit from independent air temperature controls , and the optional (standard depending on grade) advanced keyless entry system includes an engine start-stop button on top of the instrument panel. An eight- speaker BOSE® premium sound system , and a Bluetooth® hands-free mobile-phone interface , are optional (standard depending on grade).

Quiet Yet Sporty Engine Note, Dramatically Reduced Road Noise

Another “exclusive experience” development target was improved quietness . While reducing the overall noise of the engine, the engineers also emphasised certain frequencies to overlay a sporty engine note on the serene backdrop. The new 2.5-litre engine uses a dual-mass damper and a flexible flywheel and also focused on weight reduction of pistons and connecting rods. With this, it was possible to reduce combustion noise as well, achieving some of the lowest vibration level measurements in the class.

To reduce road noise while promoting handling stability, engineers reinforced body structures to suppress vibration transmitted from the road to the car body as well as noise radiated from panels. This results in some of the lowest road noise measurements in the class on all road surfaces whether smooth or rough. The diesel models destined for Europe have also undergone extensive work on NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) , resulting in reduced knock and other engine noises to achieve extremely low noise levels.

Key Value Three: INSIGHTFUL PACKAGE

The balance of stylish design and versatile packaging brings delight to daily driving

Sporty and Practical

The new Mazda6 inherits all the functionality of the previous model’s packaging, while raising practicality to a new level with creatively-designed equipment unique to Mazda. Various innovations blend sporty, emotion-pleasing styling with a comfortable interior and practical luggage space.

Sporty Proportions Wrap a Spacious Interior

Mazda’s designers aimed to achieve a cabin with sporty proportions, while making the interior roomier than in the previous model. The line from front windscreen to roof remains smooth but the header section is shifted rearward to eradicate any feeling of oppressiveness that front-seat occupants might feel. The body is slightly wider so keeping the same spacing between the driver and passenger seats as before, creates more shoulder room. Knee room for the rear passengers is increased by 13 mm for a spacious rear seat. These modifications add up to a sporty-looking cabin that belies the generous roominess within.

Driving Position For Confident, Comfortable Control

Besides having a more upright steering wheel, the gear lever is moved slightly towards the driver compared with the previous model. The driver’s seat armrest has an adjustable front-back slider mechanism , which allows drivers to rest their elbow comfortably while changing gears.

Karakuri Tonneau Cover and a Large Luggage Compartment

By researching the actual usage of the luggage space, the area most frequently used by customers features class- leading width for the new Mazda6. The rear seatbacks fold forward with a simple, single movement (Mazda’s acclaimed Karakuri rear seat fold system) opening up a flat luggage floor. The estate‘s rear tonneau cover automatically moves upwards as the tailgate is opened , eliminating the need to handle the cover every time cargo is loaded or unloaded.

Exceptional Safety and Enfironmental Performance

Exceptional Safety

Improving running, turning and stopping achieves stress-free driving performance that gives the driver predictable control of the vehicle, so every Mazda6 driver will remain in a safe frame of mind. Besides Mazda’s state-of-the-art active safety systems – including large disc brakes, ABS, DSC, electronic traction control and brake assist (standard in Europe) – and a passive safety package with Mazda’s stiff and strong Triple- H body shell and six airbags (standard in Europe), there are further features to help the Mazda6 avoid an accident or protect its occupants if an accident is unavoidable. These include:

Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS) : auxiliary headlamps shine across a corner as the car is steered, thus illuminating the actual path of travel.

Parking Sensor: eight ultrasonic sensors in total, four in the front and four in the rear bumpers, sense the distance to obstacles from the corners of the car and deliver a series of audible beeps to help the driver.

Extensive field of vision: the expansive windscreen gives the driver an unobstructed view of high traffic signals, while optimising the shape of the rear pillars and the use of flatter rear headrests gives a clearer rear view to ease parking manoeuvres.

High-rigidity Mazda Advanced Impact energy Distribution and Absorption System body : attains exceptional crash-safety performance by joining front members to the perimeter frame for improved crash energy absorption efficiency, by greatly reinforcing the cabin, and through the use of larger cross-section and straighter rear side members in high-tensile steel.

Mazda’s first active headrest : in a rear-end collision, the front seat headrest is instantaneously thrust forward, immediately supporting the head of the occupant while lightening the load of the impact.

Crushable brake and clutch pedals : the pedals are prevented from moving rearward into the cabin in a frontal collision, reducing injury to the driver’s legs.

Environmental Efficiency

In addition to the aerodynamics enhancement and reduction of rolling resistance, other features such as the electric power steering and LED stop lamp contribute to the fuel efficiency . Also, though slightly larger than its predecessor, by conducting thorough weight reduction measures, vehicle weight reduction of up to 35 kilograms has been achieved, depending on specification and model.

In addition to the overall vehicle weight reduction, by fine- tuning the engine control aspects, the 1.8-litre petrol engine’s fuel efficiency and CO 2 level has been improved by over 11 percent , while the new MZR 2.5-litre petrol engine achieves over six percent better fuel economy and CO 2 emissions than the current 2.3-litre version it replaces. The new Mazda6 engine has the catalytic converter located immediately downstream of the exhaust manifold to assure a sportier performance feel while improving exhaust gas purification.

The 2.0-litre diesel engine has also been improved. With its common-rail fuel injection system, optimisation of EGR volume, pre-mixed pilot combustion and other refinements, the engine achieves a cleaner exhaust with lower particulate emissions and minimal NOx.

As well as being fun to drive and delightful to travel in, the Mazda6 must excel in safety and environmental measures to deliver maximum kizuna with its customers. Mazda sums up its responsibilities here as “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom,” embodied in the new Mazda6. This is an essential effort in the evolution of Zoom-Zoom.

Not that we really like to brag about our accomplishments but we thought we ought to mention this. While major car magazines were insisting Ford would unveil a heavily revised Focus possibly at the Frankfurt Show, Carscoop insisted that you should expect nothing more than a mild facelift in Frankfurt (definitely). See what we wrote in June by clicking here.

Surpassing the negative fact that Ford had only two (!) Focus’ at its stand, the basic differences between the current and the revised model include: the “Mondeo” inspired front end with the trapezoid grilles and “swept-back” head lamps, the addition of a strong undercut running from front to rear of the car, new tail lamps and rear bumper. Inside Ford added a new instrument cluster, a redesigned center console, an optional Start button and a new grained soft-touch synthetic material on the entire instrument panel, as well as the upper trims of the front doors. -Continued after the jump

Mechanic wise and apart from the addition of the environmental-friendly ECOnetic version -details here, Ford unveiled its brand new 6-speed double-clutch transmission (like Audi’s DSG) which will be available with a 136 Hp 2.0-litre TDCi turbo diesel engine. Back in 2005, I had the chance to drive a prototype C-MAX 2.0 TDCi fitted with the double-clutch transmission in Germany (during the development phase), and I was quite impressed with the result. Diesel engines and dual-clutch transmissions make a perfect match. Can’t wait to drive the lighter and more agile Focus.

PRESS RELEASE: THE NEW FORD FOCUS

  • Production begins at the end of 2007, with prices announced closer to market launch

"The Ford Focus is very special to Ford in Europe. When it was revealed in 1998 it represented a huge step forward for us in terms of style and desirability over its predecessor. It truly changed the perception of Ford for many customers and journalists alike. That's why we felt it was vital to apply our new Ford design language, 'kinetic design', to the Focus as soon as we could. At the same time, we have taken the opportunity to make Focus even more practical and contemporary and added further quality improvements. Our design and development teams have done a really great job and I'm proud to present the new Ford Focus."
John Fleming, President and CEO, Ford of Europe

The New Ford Focus - Introduction

"It is not easy to improve something that is already good and well-proven. If you don’t take great care you run the risk of unnecessarily changing something that was really good before – and not for the better. With the Ford Focus, acknowledged as a great car, we were determined not to implement change for change's sake. We nevertheless managed to make the new Focus even better in specific areas. But it also made us proud that many of its attributes did not have to be touched at all. So you can still look forward to enjoying the driving dynamics of the Focus."
Gunnar Herrmann, C-Car Vehicle Line Director, Ford of Europe

The Ford Focus, with around 5 million vehicles produced in Europe, is the first and - to date - the only car in the world to be acclaimed "Car of the Year" both in Europe and in North America. In total the Ford Focus has won over 80 awards in Europe alone. It has significantly influenced the automotive world and at the same time triggered a successful new direction of Ford in Europe.

With this newest version of the Ford Focus due to begin rolling off the production lines from the end of 2007 as a three-door and five-door hatchback and as a wagon, this success story is set to continue. The Focus portfolio will then be extended further in early 2008, when the four-door saloon, the Focus Coupé-Cabriolet and the sporty flagship model Focus ST, will be added.

The New Ford Focus – Design

"Energy in Motion – what Ford vehicle would better suit the Ford 'kinetic design' philosophy than the Focus? After all, the Focus was a major factor in establishing Ford’s excellent reputation for driving dynamics. The balance we have created between dynamics and harmony makes the new Focus the best looking Focus ever."
Martin Smith, Executive Director Design, Ford of Europe

Exterior Design

Stefan Lamm, who led the exterior design team, was offered an open brief in the design of the new Ford Focus. "The hugely positive response to the re-design of the new Ford C-MAX gave us the confidence to push the design of the new Focus even further. The result is unmistakably kinetic, unmistakably Ford Focus and a recognisable member of the new Ford family."
Stefan Lamm, Chief Designer Exteriors, Ford of Europe

The new Ford Focus presents a bold new face to the world: Trapezoidal grilles, swept back headlamps and athletic full surfaces are all signatures of the new Ford brand character. The inverted lower trapezoid grille, in the upmarket Ghia and Titanium variants is enhanced by the elegant chrome surround. This lower grille is balanced by a smaller upper grille capped with a chrome strip visually linking it to the latest Ford kinetic entries such as Mondeo and more recently C-MAX. Great emphasis has been placed by the Design team on the headlamp appearance. The dramatic swept back housings are filled with the latest technology featuring HID Bi-Xenon or the Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS). These technologies are highlighted by different finishes for different series levels, for example black and chrome for Titanium vehicles and full chrome for other variants.

The Side View – Dynamic and Muscular

The side profile of the new Focus features the new 'kinetic design' cues of bold wheel lips and the strong undercut running from front to rear of the car.

This dynamic link from front to rear gives the vehicle its new sleek appearance. The body side is clean and uncluttered. "Finishing trims such as bodyside mouldings would have negatively impacted on the neat design of the side view, something that we were keen to avoid," said Lamm. "The expressive modelling of the side view of the car clearly brings the new Focus into the kinetic family."

The Tail – a Neat Conclusion

The 'kinetic design' elements visible on the rear of the vehicle include the newly shaped rear glass and contoured tailgate as well as new tail lamps and rear bumper. Together, these elements give new Focus a wider look and a more purposeful stance. A new body coloured upper rear spoiler (for Ghia and Titanium series) completes the look. The new design of tail lamps incorporates, as an option, the latest LED technology. "We have not made any compromises in the design of the new Focus and the Exteriors design team is very proud of the final outcome," Stefan Lamm summarised.

Interior Design

Comprehensive interior improvements were made to create an even more pleasant and user friendly space for those who travel in a new Focus, and to reflect the new dynamic exterior design on the interior as well. For the driver in particular, this has resulted in newly designed instruments providing better legibility which, along with all other interior controls, are now illuminated in red. The controls of the new audio equipment and two-zone air conditioning system were also ergonomically improved.

Furthermore, the high series now includes a newly designed centre console (optional for the Trend and part of the Sport Pack), which takes on the flowing look of 'kinetic design'. In addition to a movable armrest and a four litre capacity storage compartment, the back of the console provides additional storage surfaces for back-seat passengers or optional items such as a 230 volt inverter or the USB audio connection box. Another feature of the console will become available as an option from the beginning of 2008: the Ford Power Button, which will be positioned near the gear shifter.

It is not just the functionality of the interior that has been improved – special attention was also devoted to its quality. Particular importance was attached to selecting and combining surface materials and colours. Now the entire instrument panel, as well as the upper trims of the front doors, is made of a new grained, soft-touch synthetic material. New colours were added to complement the look.
A variety of attractive foil finishes highlight the central functional areas of the centre console and the instrument panel.
The fabrics of seating and interior panelling were also newly designed and from the Trend series upwards, an innovative woven roof fabric is fitted.

The New Ford PowerShift Transmission

The Ford PowerShift transmission will be available from the beginning of 2008 in the Ford Focus. This completely new six-speed double-clutch transmission combines the efficiency and driving dynamics of a manual transmission with the ease of operation of an automatic transmission. Its combination with a 136 PS (100 kW) 2.0-litre Duratorq TDCi common rail turbo diesel engine clearly demonstrates that relaxed driving does not have to come at the expense of high CO 2 emission levels.

The Ford PowerShift transmission, which was developed by GETRAG FORD Transmissions GmbH, 50:50 Ford/GETRAG joint venture, consists essentially of two layshaft transmissions working in parallel, each with its own wet clutch unit. Thanks to the layout of the intermediate shafts – one carrying the "uneven" gears 1, 3 and 5, whilst the other the even gears 2, 4 and 6 – the next gear change can be prepared by pre-selecting the next gear whilst in motion and at full power. The change then takes place through the opposed activation of both clutches, the clutch activations being co-ordinated such that no torque interruption occurs.

In contrast to the conventional automatic transmission, the basic technical configuration of the Ford PowerShift transmission offers numerous advantages. It does not require any complex sub-systems such as torque converters, planetary gear sets, multiple wet clutches and multiple bands – all of which significantly reduce gearbox efficiency due to increased inertia and drag torque effects. The result is impressive: the Ford PowerShift transmission now provides the ease and permanent motion of a conventional automatic transmission as well as the performance of a manual transmission. It also delivers fast and sporty shifts while maintaining highest degrees of shift smoothness. A further advantage of the Ford PowerShift transmission is its high torque capacity and free choice of ratios, making it an ideal partner of modern high performance diesel engines.

The New Ford Focus 2.0-Litre Duratorq TDCi with Ford PowerShift Transmission

The Ford PowerShift transmission will be available from early 2008 in the new Ford Focus as well as the Ford C-MAX, in combination with the 136 PS (100 kW) 2.0-litre Duratorq TDCi engine. This powertrain combination takes full advantage of the new PowerShift transmission. As a result, in this configuration, the average fuel consumption will be approximately 10 per cent better, and CO 2 emissions will be lower, compared to a conventional six-speed torque converter automatic transmission. Final homologated fuel economy and CO 2 emissions data, as well as performance data for the Ford Focus with this new transmission technology, will be published closer to the car's market launch.

The New Ford Focus ECOnetic

The new Ford Focus ECOnetic demonstrates that very favourable fuel consumption levels and significantly reduced CO 2 emissions can be achieved using conventional drive technology coupled with a clever combination of individual fuel-saving measures. Powered by a 109 PS (80 kW) 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi with standard Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), average consumption for this vehicle has been homologated at 4.3l/100 km. This corresponds to an average CO 2 emission of only 115 g/km, which is a class leading result for a conventional vehicle in this segment. A second variant with an even lower CO 2 performance is currently under development.

Using the already very economical regular 109 PS version with Diesel Particulate Filter as a base, the starting point in achieving such values was to reduce drive resistances. To improve aerodynamics, the vehicle was lowered by 10 mm at the front and 8 mm at the back. In addition, an aerodynamics kit is standard, consisting of a modified front bumper skirt and rocker claddings and a rear spoiler. To also improve the aerodynamics, the outer areas of the lower grille were given blanking plates on the inside. In combination with 195/65R15 tyres a very good cd of 0.31 is achieved.

A further measure to reduce driving resistance and which was tested for the first time in the development of the Focus ECOnetic was the introduction of a new
low-viscosity transmission oil developed by Ford's partner BP. The benefits were so clear that it is being introduced across other Ford products in the C and CD segments.

Besides a re-calibration of the engine-module, the reduction in energy consumption in conjunction with the electro-hydraulic EHPAS steering underlines the fact that sometimes even minor causes also produce a major benefit. By re-calibrating the
no-load performance of the electric servo pump, the respective current consumption was reduced sufficiently to result in a reduction in fuel consumption.

New Ford Focus 1.6-litre TDCi variants to achieve 120 g/km CO 2

Another direct result of the Ford ECOnetic initiative is that all 1.6-litre TDCI variants will achieve 120 g/km CO 2. By re-calibrating the engine and electro-hydraulic EHPAS steering modules, as well as using a low-friction transmission oil, all versions of the new Ford Focus fitted with the acclaimed 1.6-litre TDCi engine, will have an average CO 2 emission of 120 g/km or even less – and this is regardless of power rating, bodystyles and wheel dimensions.

Dr. Thilo Seibert, Supervisor Performance and Economy, Ford of Europe, explains: "Developed from an already very economical basic vehicle, the Focus ECOnetic combines new ideas and approaches. The result is a highly usable and extremely economical and clean car with favourably priced conventional drive technology. We are especially proud of the fact that we were able to achieve our target values without having to increase the length of the gear ratios – thereby ensuring that the Focus ECOnetic drives just as well as you would expect a Focus to do. What's even more – with the consequent adopting of Ford ECOnetic ideas to the core model range of the new Ford Focus, we made another important step in affordable and sustainable mobility."

Other Alternative Fuel Applications in the Ford Focus Range

The Flexifuel version of the 1.8-litre Duratec petrol four-cylinder engine can be fuelled with bio-ethanol E85-fuel as an alternative to conventional unleaded petrol – or in any mix of both. Bio-ethanol is a regenerative energy source produced from renewable biomass. Greenhouse CO 2 emission is reduced by 30-80 per cent over the entire life cycle as a result, without performance and driving pleasure being compromised.

Ford has been offering Focus Flexifuel models since 2001 in Sweden and they are today available in several other European markets. Around 80 per cent of all Ford Focus vehicles sold in Sweden now are Flexifuel.

Other alternative fuel versions for the Ford Focus range include CNG (compressed natural gas) and LPG (liquefied petroleum gas), both based on the 2.0-litre Duratec petrol engine. The availability of these versions is connected to market preferences for these alternative fuels.

New Equipment and Options

Easyfuel Capless Refuelling System

Like the Mondeo, the new Focus now also enjoys the benefit of the acclaimed Ford capless refuelling system. Apart from being simple and clean to use when re-fuelling, this system is designed to prevent mis-fuelling and the associated damage, inconvenience and expense.

Ford Power Button (from early 2008)

The optional Ford Power button enables the vehicle to start up simply and in style, without having to insert and turn a key in a steering column switch. As long as the driver has the key with them in the car, the Focus communicates wirelessly with a micro-chip in the key to activate the ignition system. All the driver has to do is lightly touch the Ford power button twice and the engine fires up. A further touch of the button in turn switches the engine and ignition off, with a safeguard to prevent it being operated while the car is in motion.

Tyre pressure warning system

Taking account of the respective driving situations, a sensor system checks the wheel turning speeds and, by means of a warning light in the instrument panel, reports any anomalies to indicate a change in wheel diameter due to a drop in tyre pressure. Simple, effective and secure – it is optional for every new Ford Focus.

230 Volt power socket

All vehicles with the 'High-Series' centre console can be ordered with a 230 Volt power socket as an option. A power inverter is accommodated in the console and the socket is positioned on the back of the centre console where it can be used easily by those sitting in the rear seats. By means of this option it is possible, at any time, to connect regular electrical appliances of up to a capacity of 150 Watts without the need for a specific inverter for each individual electrical appliance.

LED rear lights

All three- and five-door models, as well as the wagon, are fitted with LED rear light technology when the Adaptive Front lighting System or Bi-Xenon headlights are specified.

The Planar Light Guide technology gives the rear lights a unique appearance. In the centre of the rear light unit is located a hidden element with six LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes). These LEDs transfer their light energy via vertical optical fibres onto the rear of the tail light lens. These optical fibres are, in turn, traversed by horizontal cross bars on whose 45 degree edges the light energy is broken up and radiated to the outside. The visual result is unique and an industry first.

Lamborghini Reventn

The most extreme

The essence of the marque: just 20 examples of a design masterpiece

Clearly a Lamborghini, but nothing quite like it. A super car without equals: the Lamborghini Reventn is a road vehicle with an extreme specification and, at the same time, a limited edition masterpiece a coherent style, angular with sharp lines, inspired by the very latest aeronautics.

With just 20 produced, each 1 Million Euro (without taxes) Lamborghini Reventn is a symbol of extreme exclusivity, yet still offering the extraordinary performance that makes the Reventn so unrivalled: under the completely autonomous design, the Reventn possesses the entire technical and dynamic competence of the twelve cylinder Lamborghini.

Lamborghini prides itself on being the extraordinary manufacturer of extreme super sports cars without compromise. Sensuality and provocation characterise every Lamborghini, with an aggressively innovative style. However, the Reventn is the most extreme of all, a true automotive superlative. Our designers at the Lamborghini Style Centre took the technical base of the Murcilago LP640 and compressed and intensified its DNA, its genetic code, affirms Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A.

Born in SantAgata Bolognese

The Lamborghini Reventn has been entirely designed in SantAgata Bolognese, the original birthplace of the Lamborghini and the native home of every super car born under the sign of the bull. The design drawn up in Lamborghinis Centro Stile (Style Centre) is fine-tuned in close collaboration with the Lamborghini Research and Development Department. Thus, the Reventn is not only haute couture but it also stands out for its elevated dynamism whilst being entirely suitable for every day use.

The Lamborghini Reventn is not destined to remain a one-off. A total of 20 Lamborghini friends and collectors will be able to own this extraordinary car and, naturally, enjoy the incomparable pleasure of driving it.

The name Reventn has been chosen according to Lamborghini tradition. Reventn was a fighting bull, owned by the Don Rodriguez family. It is included in the list of the most famous bulls ever and is known for killing the famed bullfighter Felix Guzman in 1943.

Inspired by the fastest airplanes

The present day Lamborghini models are distinguished by the clear language of their shape. The coherent proportions of the Murcilago and Gallardo highlight their power and dynamism. Sharp edges, precise lines and clean surfaces: these are ingredients of a style reduced to the essential. Each element is created exactly according to its function; ornaments and decorations are totally foreign to a Lamborghini.

With the Reventn the Centro Stile designers have coherently developed this philosophy, inspired by another sphere where speed and dynamism reign absolute: modern aeronautics, responsible for the fastest and most agile airplanes in the world. This has created an extremely precise, technically striking style with a new vitality: interrupted lines and contorted surfaces create a fascinating play of light, giving the car incredible movement.

Made of carbon fibre and precision

Although it is based on the extraordinarily successful Murcilago LP640, the exterior design of the Reventn is completely new. Just like the base model, the exterior is made of CFC, a composite carbon fibre material, which is as stable as it is light. The exterior components are glued and fixed to the body comprised of CFC and steel.

The front is characterised by the acute angle of the central arrow and by the powerful forward-facing air intakes. Although they do not supply air directly to the turbine like an airplane, bearing in mind the 650 hp, an abundant volume of air is necessary to cool the carbon brake disks and the six cylinder callipers.

Characterised by coherent functions

Naturally, both doors on the Reventn open upwards since the legendary Countach this has also been a symbol of the V12 Lamborghini product line. With their asymmetric configuration, the large air intakes below the doors provide an example of the extreme coherence with which a Lamborghini fulfils its function: on the driver's side it is large to increase the flow of oil to the radiator. On the passengers side of the vehicle, the air intake is flat because in this case, it only has to ensure the flow below the floor. The aerodynamically optimised flat floor structure terminates at the rear with a diffuser featuring an accentuated shape. This guarantees excellent road grip and stability even at 340 km per hour.

In spite of the extreme and innovative language of its shape, the Reventn not only maintains all the strong features of the Murcilago LP640, but also offers further amelioration in terms of aerodynamics, the important engine cooling system, the air intake system and brakes. The airflow and the section of the variable geometry air intakes of the engine and the rear spoiler (also adjustable) have been modified.

Owners of the 20 examples will be able to test the performance of his or her Lamborghini in person.

Perfected to the ultimate detail

The engine hood made of glass laminate with open ventilation slits offers a glimpse of the beating heart of the twelve cylinders of the super car. The glass also features the marked arrow angle that characterises the design from the front to the rear spoiler. The Lamborghini designers love for detail is beautifully illustrated by the fuel tank lid: a small mechanical work of art, achieved by milling a solid aluminium block.

The combination lights transform the incisiveness of the design into light: the front features the most modern light-emitting diodes alongside Bi-Xenon headlights. Seven LEDs ensure continuous daylight while there are a further nine diodes for the indicator and hazard lights. Another technical innovation is found in the rear light LEDs. Because of the high temperature in the rear low part of the car, special heatproof LEDs are used for the indicator and hazard lights, stoplights and rear lights with a triple arrow optical effect.

A new body colour

Naturally, such a refined language of shape also demands an extraordinary colour. For the 20 examples of the Reventn, the designers from SantAgata Bolognese have created a totally new hue: Reventn, a mid opaque green/grey without the usual shine. However, thanks to the metallic particles, in the daylight this colour tone features surprising depth.

Opaque and brilliant colours for the wheel rims

This play of opaque and lustre is also featured on the wheel rims, especially created for the Reventn. Opaque carbon fins are screwed onto the black aluminium spokes, not only creating a visual effect with the precision of a surgeons scalpel, but a turbine effect also ensures optimum cooling for the powerful ceramic brake disks.

TFT display similar to an airplane

The same innovative force applied to the exterior design characterises the cockpit of the Reventn. Designed and created using Alcantara, carbon, aluminium and leather that comply with the top quality standards, the interior is inspired by the next generation cockpits: just like in modern airplanes, the instruments comprise three TFT liquid crystal displays with innovative display modes. At the touch of a button, the driver can choose from two vehicle information display modes. The instruments are housed in a structure milled from a solid aluminium block, protected by a carbon fibre casing.

The G-Force-Meter is also completely new: this display shows the dynamic drive forces, longitudinal acceleration during acceleration and braking, as well as transversal acceleration around bends. These forces are represented by the movement of an indicator on a graduated 3D grid depending on the direction and intensity of the acceleration. A similar instrument can be found in the airplanes. Formula One teams also use a similar device to analyse dynamic forces.

Customisable instruments

The instrument on the left of the speedometer associates the number of revolutions in the form of a luminous column with the display of the selected gear. Finally, every Reventn is equipped with a robotised e.gear controlled by two small levers under the steering wheel.

By simply pressing a button, the driver can switch to the second, quasi-analogical display, where the classic circular instruments, speedometer and engine speed indicator are configured in an equally innovative way and transformed into luminous pilot lamps with varying colours. The G-Force-Meter naturally remains at the centre in this display mode.

Electronic system developed entirely by Lamborghini

All this is possible thanks to the fact that the entire electronic platform of the Reventn, together with all the control devices, has been autonomously developed by the Lamborghini experts.

The same process for integrating the electronic displays in the car was applied to the Lamborghini Engineering Department.

From the conception of the very first radical ideas, the entire Reventn has been developed in SantAgata Bolognese thanks to tight teams of remarkably creative experts. An extremely refined and efficient process was employed: CAD design and development, creation of the prototype in the Prototype Department, all carried out under the constant supervision of the Research and Development Departments technicians and testers.

Atelier of creativity and high efficiency

Inaugurated in 2004, the Centro Stile is dedicated to design and characterised by a high degree of efficiency: an atelier of creators, designers and prototype constructors, who encapsulate the Lamborghini culture and spirit by using their remarkable skills to create aesthetic innovation.

The Centro Stile is located in a 2,900 square two-storey building. The large pavilion houses two test floors and related production and analysis equipment, while other rooms are set aside for the most advanced computerised workstations for designers and a style-model construction workshop. The Centro Stile is also closely linked to the nearby Engineering Department: the direct line between the Lamborghini development departments guarantees that ideas rapidly become reality.

Creativity and production under the same roof

The Lamborghini Reventn is a practical illustration of the streamlined functionality and efficiency characterising the Centro Stile: it took less than a year to progress from the first ideas to the finished car. The complete design process from the first sketches on paper, to three dimensional computer models with 1:10 or 1:4 scale, right up to the real size prototype is organised around streamlined, fast, efficient work groups. Thanks to the Centro Stile, for the first time in its history, Lamborghini is now able to create its own style philosophy in-house without having to rely on any external collaboration.

The 20 units will be manufactured in SantAgata, using a production process characterised by artisan perfection and rigorous quality standards.

A masterpiece with tested technology

The technology found in the Murcilago LP640 has not been modified. The engine in the LP640 forwards is the classic twelve-cylinder engine with 6.5 litre displacement. Only for this car, Lamborghini guarantees, an astounding 650 HP (478 kW) at 8,000 revolutions per minute (rpm). The huge torque, equal to maximum 660 Nm, ensures a powerful switch from any number of revolutions: even the slightest pressure on the accelerator is spontaneously transformed into thrust. The robotised e.gear changes gear faster than even the most expert driver. In addition, the permanent Viscous Traction four-wheel drive system ensures that every force is constantly translated into movement.

As in the original Murcilago LP640, the Reventn accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds, with a maximum speed over 340 km/h.

Born to become a legend

Since its foundation, Lamborghini has been a creator of trends in the world of sports cars and has always manufactured cars with an absolutely unmistakable character. Models such as the Miura or Countach, for example, were veritable forerunners and rapidly acquired the status of timeless classic cars. From the moment they are launched, every new Lamborghini promises to become a legend, destined to become a sought-after and precious possession.

With the Lamborghini Reventn, Lamborghini has done it again; it has created an unequalled super car; the perfect synthesis between the exclusivity and appeal of a limited edition design masterpiece, and the dynamism and driveability of a standard sports car. Thus, the Lamborghini legend is further enhanced by another, stylish future classic.

As I was walking away from BMW’s Frankfurt Show Hall minding my own business, out of nowhere I see a sweet German pussy err, I mean girl, on a pussycat themed bicycle wearing a pair of pussycat ear-sets on her head. I couldn’t resist asking her for a photograph and of course she couldn’t resist saying no. Although my charm is indisputable, I’m suspecting that there's a teeny weeny possibility that she stopped because she was part of “Brave Machine’s” promo. Naaa...

So I got a bit carried away with Frankfurt’s famous sausages -big deal, it’s not like someone gets to travel to Germany every day you know. Plus, out of sheer journalistic curiosity, it was my duty to see what the fuss was about at the snack bar –ok, plural, snack bars. By the way, I have no idea how those Frankfurt-Fries plunged in a pool of mayonnaise found their way into my table and I certainly don't know what happened to them after.

I can’t believe that I’m saying this for the second time today and God knows how many times during my stay at the Frankfurt Show, but here’s another Japanese car that definitely gets my vote for its unique and dare to say, attractive styling. And mind you, this is no simple exercise. See, Suzuki plans to enter the D-Segment (Ford Mondeo, Mazda6, Honda Accord, BMW 3-Series etc) in the very near future, and the AWD Kizashi that’s powered by a 2.0L turbo-diesel engine, contains the core values of the production model -sporty to drive, exciting to look at and at the same time, affordable. But will the production model actually look like the concept? That remains to be seen, but we certainly hope so. -Press release and high-res images after the jump

Suzuki Concept Kizashi, the World Premiere

The Third Phase of Suzuki's World Strategy

With the Swift, Suzuki began the first phase of its world strategy and gave undiluted form to the attribute that was the theme of the first phase: sportiness.

The Swift won awards around the world by virtue of its superior dynamics and design. Suzuki subsequently pursued sportiness in the Grand Vitara and SX4, and both cars enjoy enormous success.

The Splash is making its world debut at the 2007 Frankfurt show and will become the first model in the second phase of Suzuki's world strategy. In this phase, the theme is families. Having focused on sportiness in the first phase, enhancing Suzuki's image in the process, Suzuki is now building upon what they have already achieved while refocusing on its main traditional strength: family-oriented user-friendliness. The next model coming after the Splash is the next-generation Alto, which combines environmental compatibility with agility.

The D-segment initiative which is now being revealed represents the beginning of the third phase of the world strategy. The main objective of this phase is status. The brand has developed to such an extent that it's able to communicate status, and Suzuki has overcome the great challenge of making cars that give their owners a feeling of status.

1. Why is Suzuki Entering the D-Segment?

Suzuki has made a name for itself in the compact car and sport utility vehicle segments. Its customers spread in 168 countries and regions around the world. The annual sales have shown steady growth, rising from about 1,654 thousand units in fiscal 1997 to an estimated 2,405 thousand units in fiscal 2007.

Under the mid-term five-year plan, Suzuki is targeting sales of 3 million units in fiscal 2009 (the last year of the plan). The Japanese carmaker achieved consolidated sales of 3 trillion yen in fiscal 2007, meaning that the company is close to a mid-ranking position in the worldwide motor industry.

But despite the progress, Suzuki has not been able to accommodate many of the customers who have expressed a desire to stay with the automaker when purchasing subsequent, larger cars. Suzuki has entirely owed its customers for the growth since its founding in 1909. The carmaker feels obliged to respond to increasing expectations and is convinced that it's essential to offer a wider product range in order to accommodate customers' diverse lifestyles. Consequently, Suzuki has decided to expand its lineup to cover all segments from A to D in the next few years. Suzuki's first-ever D-segment car will stand at the top of the range.

Another major factor behind the D-segment entry is to more fully exploit the high level of Suzuki's technological competence and thus enhance its brand image.

2. Suzuki's D-Segment Entry

Suzuki realises that there's no point in entering the D-segment unless it can offer new value that can't be given by any of the existing brands.

Suzuki paid close attention to the fact that the D-segment is broadly divided into two parts. In one part, there are family-oriented cars that are relatively large and reflect an emphasis on cabin roominess. In the other part, there are “entry luxury” cars that reflect an emphasis on performance, are relatively compact, and offer relatively high levels of quality and prestige. The new value that Suzuki intends to provide will not belong to either group.

Suzuki's “Way of Life!” brand slogan is based on five elements: “straightforward”, “value”, “sporty”, “spirit”, and “excitement”. The words “straightforward” and “value” reflect Suzuki's ability to offer products that are sensible and worthwhile. The words “sporty” and “spirit” reflect the emotional appeal of its products. And the word “excitement” expresses the core factor that Suzuki delivers to customers through all products. Among these factors, “value” (in other words, a level of customer satisfaction higher than the expected from products' prices), is an inherent virtue of Suzuki cars.

It might be argued that all existing D-segment cars whose affordability is a selling point are chosen by customers because they offer a good balance of pricing on one hand and the rational factors of equipment, driving performance, and cabin roominess on the other. But the Suzuki D-segment car will be different.

With the D-segment entry, Suzuki is targeting emotional appeal as a way to deliver a level of customer satisfaction far higher than what might be expected from the car's price point. In other words, Suzuki is the first carmaker to target an uncompromised combination of affordability and emotional appeal in the D-segment.

For sportiness, the car's dimensions need to reflect a priority on performance. So while ensuring the cabin roominess that is essential in the D-segment, the car is as lean as possible. And with regard to design, Suzuki has thoroughly studied the nature of sporty, exciting styling in the D-segment and has concluded that the design of the new car should have two themes: grace and dynamism.

Since the overall theme of the third phase of Suzuki's world strategy is status, the expressions of dynamism should not be brash expressions of power. Rather, they aim for styling that's rich in character and conveys a passionate spirit.

The sportiness that Suzuki wants to deliver in the D-segment will perhaps be most directly expressed by the car's dynamics. The kind of dynamics creates a sense of refinement. Suzuki's engineers are striving to devise ways to maximize the quality of the dynamics not only in performance but also in terms of motion that stirs people's emotions. This effort is vital because the kind of sportiness is measured not in terms of times and performance figures but in terms of how it makes people feel. Suzuki has already given form to this thinking in the Swift Sport. Now, they plan to carry it forward and further develop it for the D-segment.

3. The Engineering Approach Supporting Suzuki's New Initiative

In order to achieve its goals, Suzuki is taking a typically Suzuki-like technological approach. The methodology is to combine and apply proven technologies, thoroughly refining them in user-centred ways rather than pursuing features using spectacular new techniques.

This approach is actually one of the greatest benefits Suzuki has gained from its company's motorcycle business (Suzuki is one of only a handful of companies that produce both cars and motorcycles). With a motorcycle – where the man-machine interface is even more crucial than it is with a car – establishing the dynamics based on data alone is impossible. Rather, it's essential to conduct numerous road tests, verifying and interpreting each and every comment from testers and feeding the results back into the design. This method may appear outdated in an industry where virtual-reality technology has become mainstream. Since Suzuki's engineers worked on the Swift, they have been convinced that it's the best way to dramatically heighten the dynamic performance of Suzuki's cars and stir the emotions of users. These factors are behind our focus on delivering a D-segment car that's spirited.

At the same time, Suzuki is conscious of the great demand for environmental compatibility in the D-segment. The main response to this demand is the development of a hybrid car. Its goal is to use a hybrid arrangement (an internal combustion engine provides the main propulsion, and an electric motor provides assistance whenever extra power is needed) to achieve environmental compatibility without sacrificing an emotionally appealing engine feel.

Suzuki is planning to use all-wheel drive (AWD; a technology that Suzuki has refined over many years) to further heighten the car's refined dynamics. For an even better combination of environmental compatibility and dynamic performance, the AWD development targets include the lowest CO2 emissions of any D-segment AWD passenger car.

4. Suzuki D-Segment Preview: The Concept Kizashi

Suzuki unveils the progress of the new project, a concept car called the Concept Kizashi, at the 2007 IAA Frankfurt show.

Kizashi is a Japanese word meaning “prelude” or “foretaste”. The name symbolizes the change within Suzuki.

The Concept Kizashi represents Suzuki's passion for challenges (this is a major aspect of Suzuki's corporate culture), its future direction, and the competitive strengths that are unique to Suzuki.

To fulfill this mission, the design theme for the Concept Kizashi is “a dynamic athlete in motion”. This is because its D-segment ideals are summed up by the attributes of a great athlete: dedication to sporting challenges, physical strength that comes from hard daily training, a honed physique with no superfluous weight, and the presence and dignity of a champion.

Suzuki made a particular effort to express the car's credentials as a highway athlete:

1. Overwhelming presence that breaks the D-segment mould

The body brings to mind the lean, muscular physique of a top-class athlete, and a strongly protrusive front end communicates a dignified character.

2. An energetic look that immediately gives an idea of the car's dynamic performance

Large wheels and wide treads express a capacity for high performance. The bonnet shape hints at abundant engine power. And the body hints at aerodynamics that enable the car to punch through the air while firmly gripping the road.

3. A sense of character and status befitting Suzuki's flagship car

The detailing of individual parts gives a sense of exquisiteness and quality.

The Concept Kizashi is a clear sign of the great things to come from Suzuki as the D-segment initiative continues to take shape.

Frankfurt Review: Ford Kuga SUV

Wednesday, September 12, 2007 | 0 comments » Categories | , , | Bookmark and Share

Without doubt, Ford Kuga’s exterior design won us instantly – inside, it’s another story since the cabin was virtually carried over unchanged from the redesigned C-MAX. In our books, the Kuga is by far the best looking compact SUV/ Crossover offered this moment in Europe. Put side by side to the Tiguan that also debuted in Frankfurt, and VW’s proposition looks like a previous generation model. We can’t wait to take the Kuga for a spin next year and see if Ford’s engineers have managed to combine looks with a “Focused” chassis. Pity Ford doesn’t consider importing it to the States. Check out the press release along with a high-res official image gallery here. -More images after the jump

According to Seat, the Tribu Concept previews the design language of the next models to be launched by the Spanish company (Ibiza and Toledo). Moreover, it's the first model to be penned by Seat's new Chief Designer, Luc Donckerwolke since he came to the Spanish brand after holding the same position at Lamborghini. To be completely honest, we don't understand what the fuss is all about. In our eyes the Tribu features a 'crispier' or 'edgier' interpretation of Seat's current design language as previewed by the Salsa concept which led to the second generation Leon. -Press release and image gallery after the jump

THE NEW SEAT TRIBU

A glimpse of the future

A concept car that offers a preview of upcoming models

Three drive modes: Urban, Sport and Freerun

A tough, compact and truly sporty image

Frankfurt is the venue for the launch of a concept car which is very important to SEAT, as it represents a turning point in the future of the Spanish brand. Just as the Salsa prototype was the prelude to the SEAT Leon, the new Tribu demonstrates the design basis for the next models to be launched by SEAT.

Indeed, the new Tribu is the first model to be completely designed by the Spanish brand's Chief Designer, Luc Donckerwolke and his team, since he joined SEAT after holding the same position at Lamborghini. Straighter and well-defined shapes, combined with sharper lines, increase the surface tension of the components which make up the model's design, and mark a change from the current design of the SEAT models. The Tribu has a robust yet sporty look allied with great versatility. Comfortable interiors, filled with passenger comfort and technological features. And of course a high-performance diesel engine with excellent environmental compatibility.

That's what future SEAT models will be like, with this concept car giving us a sneak preview.

Creative force

The Tribu once again demonstrates SEAT's enormous potential to create and develop new models. Its design reflects the SEAT brand's genes and its 'auto emocion' slogan; this design is innovative, with a strikingly sporty character and great vitality. And even more importantly, this concept car is not just looking to be the star of the motor show: its also previews the design trends for future SEAT models.

This was the case in the past for the SEAT Salsa, a vehicle which received great acclaim when it was unveiled in 2000, and was the prototype for the design and compact architecture of the SEAT Leon and the Altea family of today.

The Tribu is the latest in a line of SEAT concept cars, and is suitable for both on-road and off-road driving.

Three spirits in just one car

The Tribu manages to reconcile the contrasting worlds of town and country. Indeed, it could be said to be a car which is designed just as much for the town as it is for the country.

Three very different modes are combined in the one body, with the driver able to select the mode of his or her choice at any time. Depending on whether Urban, Sport or Freerun mode is selected, the new SEAT concept car changes its technical parameters (engine management, suspension, transmission and so on) in order to adapt to the circumstances in which it is used.

As the name indicates, Urban drive mode is for driving in urban areas, and prioritises comfort and fuel economy, as well as emissions reduction. Sport mode can be selected for showing off the sheer power of the Tribu's engine, with the main technical parameters for this mode being performance and driving dynamics. Finally, when heading off-road, Freerun mode adjusts the engine, transmission and suspension, enabling the Tribu's 4x4 nature to shine through.

And the Tribu does not just adjust its parameters in line with the selected drive mode. It also adapts to information from the vehicle's instruments, and even in some cases to the interior configuration.

SEAT genes

The most striking feature when you get close to the new Tribu is the complete evolution that the concept car undergoes compared with the SEAT range to date. The innovative hatchback and the impressive 20'' wheels make us realise that we are looking at a SEAT of the next generation. Even the untrained eye will easily be able to spot characteristic elements of the brand genes in the prototype's sideline and the expressive front end.

The dynamic line, which is so characteristic of SEAT models, has evolved and reconfirms its presence on the vehicle, starting from the front section, above the headlights. If we consider the headlights to be the Tribu's eyes, the start of the sideline is its eyebrows. This strong front line continues above the front wheel arch along the side of the vehicle to the rear.

The new generation of SEAT models will undoubtedly be easy to recognise from any angle.

But this is where the similarities with any other SEAT models end.

A three-door model with compact and sporty looks

The new Tribu displays all the features of a true SUV, and like traditional four-wheel-drive vehicles, there is a clear separation in its outline between the body of the vehicle (the passenger compartment) and the wheels and fenders. In addition, its compact shape gives the Tribu a truly sporty feel. From a raised frontal position, its expressive headlights and front panel, combined with the overhanging wheel arches, give the Tribu the look of a single-seater racing car. And the Tribu's appearance does not flatter to deceive, as its off-road character, impressive ground clearance and its total four-wheel-drive system, make it an authentic off-roader.

We could even go as far as saying that the colour of the new concept car contributes to its off-roader look. The Tribu's metallic yellow paintwork makes it blend in with the ochre shades of rural tracks, contributing to the car's closeness with nature. As a special feature, the less exposed parts, such as the hood, are finished with a layer of shiny paint. Areas that would suffer more from the effects of minor bumps or the impact of stones are covered with matt paintwork.

The side section of the new Tribu contains numerous design features that enhance its sporty feel. In addition to the dynamic line which already characterises the current generation of SEAT models, it is worth highlighting the absence, to the naked eye at least, of a B pillar, which gives continuity along the length of the side section up to the front and rear windows. The compact and sporty shape of the Tribu is also emphasised by its three-door configuration, with the driver and passenger doors being large size, and, as a special feature, not having frames.

Although undeniably sporty, the Tribu does not forget that it is also a 4x4. Off-roader features, such as the roof rack, can be appreciated from the side. The roof rack itself is original, as it is incorporated into the body of the vehicle, which is extended upwards in order to provide space.

The integrated turn signals are a special feature of the door mirrors. These turn signals are located inside aluminium-coloured mouldings, featuring a trapezoidal shape which is the hallmark of this model.

Finally, as regards the side section of the prototype, the Tribu's door handles are worthy of a mention. When the vehicle is locked, the handles retract into the door. However, when the vehicle is being opened, the handles rotate on an axle, making them accessible.

The trapezoidal geometry of the front headlights, radiator grille and air intakes, as well as the new-look extended hexagonal shape of the grilles, give the Tribu a powerful, ultra-strong appearance. In the same way, the overhanging front and rear wheel arches add to the previously mentioned design features, giving the Tribu a sporty feel.

Viewed from the front, and from behind, the large yet compact bonnet stands out, and the windscreen also extends along the length of the vehicle's roof. In this way, the windscreen and the panoramic roof blend into one, allowing a maximum amount of light into the passenger compartment, which makes it ideal for enjoying the scenery.

On the rear section of the Tribu, the most striking feature when viewed with the naked eye is the lack of rear lights. The rear lights are in fact located behind the hatchback, and can only be seen when illuminated, when the brake lights, sidelights and indicators are activated. The latest technology is used both on the rear lights and the headlights, which are made up of LED lights, offering the best possible guarantee of seeing and being seen.

Innovative rear hatch

Another truly original design feature is the novel hatchback opening system. The system moves up along two rails and has two phases. In the first phase, the door only partially opens, enabling small items to be put in or taken out. In the second phase, the hatchback continues moving along its rails until it pivots onto the roof of the vehicle, constituting an example of harmonious integration into the body of the concept car.

The rear fog lights, meanwhile, just like the reversing light, are integrated onto the bumper. The two exhaust outlets are also located on the sides of the bumper. Another feature of the Tribu's sporty spirit is a small aluminium spoiler, matching other parts of the body such as the roof bars, the door handles and the mouldings, where the door mirror indicators are located.

The lower section of the front and rear bumpers is formed by mouldings in black, guaranteeing protection for the body when the new Tribu heads off-road.

This is also the case along the sides of the vehicle, with the lower section in the same material with the same purpose. However, viewed from the side, all eyes will be drawn to the impressive 20'' wheels, with 255/50 tyres. Their design features a striking trapezoidal shape which has already been mentioned in connection with the mirrors, and which is also evident in other elements both on the inside and outside of the vehicle, while the impressive brake discs can be seen through the wheels.

With the modernity and spaciousness of a loft

Once the doors of the new Tribu are opened, the first thing that will catch the eye is the interior concept, which is inspired by the colours, design, luminosity and proportions of a loft-type space, where spaciousness and modernity go hand-in-hand. The wide range of technical features which maximise comfort and convenience for the driver and passengers also stands out. And that is without mentioning the vehicle's excellent passenger and driver space, and the practical solutions that not only invite you to travel, but also to enjoy the journey.

The joint windscreen and panoramic roof bring the outside world into the Tribu. This feature also makes us feel that we are travelling in a vehicle which is much roomier than its actual dimensions would suggest.

With a four-seat interior configuration, we can see that the front seats are authentic bucket seats which boast ideal ergonomics and which feature height and fore-aft adjustment as well as having integrated seatbelts. The Tribu's front seats boast several special design features. In particular, they have their own independent air conditioning circuits. In addition, the air outlets for the rear seats are located on the back of the front seats.

These seats are separated by a central tunnel which can be used as an armrest or drinks holder, as well as offering practical storage space. Without quite being bucket seats, the rear seats also stand out due to their sports vehicle configuration, guaranteeing maximum lateral hold. The rear seats can also be folded down in order to create a totally flat space, thus increasing boot capacity.

Once in the driver's seat, we really notice a major qualitative improvement in terms of materials, as well as the design and technology.

Great emphasis has also been placed on driver and passenger space. The Tribu is not just about design: it is also a highly practical vehicle. Despite its compact shape and dimensions, all four passengers travel in a comfortable and spacious environment.

The standard gear lever and handbrake have been removed from between the two front seats, giving the driver and front passenger more space. The gear lever has been replaced by a sequential gear change system controlled from the steering wheel, and the handbrake by a button located on the central console. The reverse, ignition, boot opening and hazard light buttons are located next to the handbrake button.

The steering wheel is also a brand new SEAT design. With three spokes, it has a truly sporty feel. Cutting-edge technology has also been used on the wheel: with both sound and mobile phone systems, as well as navigation and cruise control, being controlled from it.

All information at a glance

The dashboard offers the Tribu driver a wealth of information. This is concentrated primarily in the two dials (speedometer and rev counter) and in the TFT touchscreen, which is available for all passengers and displays information common to the three driving modes: audio system, vehicle configuration, air conditioning and so on.

The first auxiliary screen, located to the left of the speedometer and rev counter next to the driver's door, gives traffic information when in Urban mode, displays speed when driving in Sport mode, and shows a compass when in Freerun mode.

The second of the auxiliary screens, located between the speedometer and the rev counter, displays pure visual information from the navigation system, speed in a digital format with a stopwatch, and finally incline, when in Urban, Sport and Freerun modes respectively.

The third auxiliary screen is located to the right of the dials: in Urban mode it displays information from the 3D navigation system, and in Sport mode it provides information about the suspension system and tyre pressure, as well as oil temperature. In Freerun mode, a topographical navigation screen appears.

This information is optimally managed, so that far from being a problem, it only serves to help the driver.

In a 21st century vehicle such as the Tribu, the most in-demand multimedia connections just had to be included. In the tunnel below the dashboard, there are MP3 ports with USB and iPod connections, as well as an internet connection.

Another original eye-catching design feature is the air vent along the length of the dashboard, moving away from the traditional nozzle concept. This air conditioning system outlet has the trapezoidal shape already seen elsewhere on the Tribu such as on the footrest and pedals.

Another eye-catching interior feature in the Tribu is the use of inlays on both the dashboard and the door panels, with finishes in the exterior colour of the concept car.

It should also be highlighted that the materials used on the interior of the Tribu are strong, recyclable and easy to clean, and are intermingled with metal elements. The materials are of a colour and texture similar to neoprene black. The metal panels, meanwhile, use the bodywork colour, and have a matt finish, to avoid shine and reflections.

Wanna know what crossed my mind when I first saw the Accord Tourer? Mazda6. It’s amazing how two different design teams came up with the exact same “belt-line” and pronounced front wheel arches, that practically define both cars. Other than that, the Tourer concept that’s equipped with a newly developed 2.2-litre i-DTEC diesel engine indicates the design direction of the all-new Accord set to debut in Sedan and Tourer forms at the Geneva motor show next March. As many of you might be familiar with, the current European Accord is the N. American Acura TSX’s alter ego.

According to Honda, the all-new Accord will be offered withall-Euro 5-compliant engine line-ups consisting of 2.0 and 2.4-litre i-VTEC petrol engines and the 2.2-litre i-DTEC next-generation diesel engine. Compared to the current Accord engine line-up, output will be boosted and emissions and fuel economy significantly reduced. -Press release and images after the jump

HONDA PRESENTS THE ACCORD TOURER CONCEPT AND i-DTEC, THE NEXT-GENERATION CLEAN DIESEL ENGINE TECHNOLOGY, AT THE FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW

September 11, 2007 - Honda presented to the world the exciting Accord Tourer Concept and the new generation of Honda diesel engines, i-DTEC at the 2007 Frankfurt motor show.

The premiere of the Accord Tourer Concept provides a strong indication of the design direction of the all-new generation Accord Tourer set to debut in mid-2008. The wider, lower look signals a sportier, more emotional styling approach, and while the design of the current Accord Tourer maximises its load-carrying capability, the new model goes for smarter, sleeker proportions while retaining a strong degree of versatility and practicality. The Concept's greater width makes for a more spacious cabin and also allows an increased track for enhanced handling characteristics.

The all-new Accord range will boast one of the first all-Euro 5-compliant engine line-ups which will consist of two i-VTEC petrol engines of 2.0 and 2.4-litre capacities and a newly developed 2.2-litre i-DTEC next-generation diesel engine. Compared to the current Accord engine line-up, power output will be boosted and emissions and fuel economy significantly improved.

The latest engines will be complemented by innovative new chassis technology that will deliver exceptional handling, greater linear stability and a more involving driving experience without compromising ride comfort. The all-new Accord will debut in Sedan and Tourer forms at the 2008 Geneva motor show.

The all-new i-DTEC is the 2nd diesel engine Honda has developed. By further improving the current award winning i-CTDi's superb performance, fuel economy and emission efficiencies, i-DTEC has achieved various stringent emission standards in the U.S., Japan and Europe (Honda test data).

The first phase of the programme - compliance with the Euro 5 legislation expected in 2009 - has already reached fruition, and an example of the new engine, which makes its first appearance in next year's Accord range, is being shown on the stand.

Honda continues to work on the second phase of development of its latest diesel engine and has already achieved compliance with the stringent US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier II/Bin 5 emissions requirements. This is of particular significance to the European market in that the Tier II standards are even more demanding than the Euro 6 requirements which remain at the proposal stage. An example of this engine is also on display at the stand.

Notes to editors:

  • In Euro 5 regulation, emissions of particulates from diesel-engined cars are expected to be reduced by 80 per cent compared to Euro 4 (down from 25 to 5 mg/km), while NOx levels are cut from 250 to 180 mg/km.
  • Tier II is the second stage of US emissions standards and is split into eight permanent and three temporary certification levels called ‘bins' to which vehicles are certified. When fully implemented in 2009, a manufacturer's light-vehicle fleet has to meet the average NOx standard of approximately 43.5 mg/km (0.07 g/mile) - the Bin 5 level (and equivalent to California's LEV II standard).

Theoretically, the up! concept represents VW’s twenty-first century Beetle. Tech wise that may be true as the up! is not only an economical proposition but it also revives the original “people’s car” rear-engine, rear-wheel drive layout. However, the 3.45m long up! comes no where close to the Beetle in terms of emotion.

It’s as if
Walter de Silva, Chief Designer of the Volkswagen group was summoned upon by his fellow engineers to draw up a sketch for the up! a couple of weeks prior to the Frankfurt Show opening. Completely soulless and a letdown when compared to Toyota’s beautifully penned iQ mini-car concept (see here). However, from what we learned, VW will present alternative proposals for the up!’s design in upcoming major car shows. Maybe as soon as the L.A. Show in November. -Press release and image gallery after the jump

The up! - Key Aspects

Volkswagen Reinvents the Volkswagen

World premiere: Volkswagen up! concept car with rear engine
Multivariable: City specialist offers more space, more variability and more fun

There are cars that endure for all times. They are icons of their type, masterpieces of craftsmanship and technology; they put ideas into motion, make progress tangible and sometimes quite simply make everyday life better, more practical and enjoyable. Many of these cars carry the VW logo. “Bug, Beetle, New Beetle”, “T1, Bulli, Samba bus, California”, “Golf, GTI”. Now Volkswagen is presenting – as a world premiere at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt – a concept car that once again has the right stuff needed to move more than just one generation. It is a small, pure and high-spirited Volkswagen that pays tribute to its environment. The overall concept is marked by an innovative, clear, intuitive functionality. The name of the concept car: up! – a positive name that is a synonym for departure, activity, dynamics and the future. “For Volkswagen”, says Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Board Member with Responsibility for Technical Development, “the response of IAA visitors will be a decisive test to determine whether the concept has the same kind of potential possessed by the Beetle at one time or by the Golf today.”

The up! - Concept

The up! is a city specialist, a car for four persons and all languages, for the job, the university, the drive to the beach and the excursion outside the city gates. A small car that shows a lot of size, because it offers more space than any other car of similar length (3.45 meters) and width (1.63 meters). Its engine – conceivable here are all facets of technology that can be sensibly applied – will run in the rear. And that changes everything: Space, mood and design.Walter de Silva, Chief Designer of the Volkswagen group, sums it up like this: “The up! is not a car whose form will become obsolete within a very brief period of time. It shines in its cleverness and yet is made with loving care. And so the up! is a clear and strong statement for future Volkswagen design.” Furthermore, the team of designers and engineers has envisioned the up! concept car as the first member of an entire model line; other facets are entirely conceivable.

Ralf-Gerhard Willner, Director of Concept Development, has final responsibility for the technical layout of the up! He and Walter de Silva had already achieved a new balance in the mutual interaction between form and function at Volkswagen before the start of the project. “Absolute harmony of the basic technological concept and the emotional aspects of the design”, note Willner and de Silva in unison, “can only be achieved in a hard clash of ideas between engineers and designers. That is the only way to produce icons.” That is precisely why the up! is not your run-of-the-mill, small, tightly packed car, but instead is a clever, innovative whole. Its form is pure. It just had to look like this, no other look would do. There is nothing superf luous, and its functionality – and so also its design – speak for themselves. Simultaneously – and this is typical of Volkswagen – uncompromisingly attention was given to refining every line and every surface until we had created a friendly and masterful car.

The up! - Exterior design

The fact that the engine of the up! runs in the rear has a decisive inf luence on its exterior design. That is because the up! has no classic radiator grille. It forges links to the Beetle. This fact alone gives it a great deal of independence. Dominant design characteristics are the headlamps that take an inward and diagonal line, between them the horizontally arranged air vents, the VW logo (as one of the few details kept in chrome), the tailgate that extends far forward and the smooth bumper with a circumferential black stripe as a detail of the “happy face” that is typical of Volkswagen.

In many areas, technology and design have melded into a vehicle architecture that is not only appealing, but is also very utilitarian. The rear end of the up! is a good example of this. The tailgate was produced using a transparent material. Under this gate developers also integrated the high layout of the taillights. This is where design and technical-conceptual aspirations come together on the economical car. The goal is to have the rear window wiper clean the taillights too as necessary. Another feature that is technically and visually new is the location of the VW logo in the tailgate; it is also located behind glass and illuminates when the light is on. The rear bumper was designed to match the “happy face” in front.

The powerful appearance of the up!, despite all of its compactness, is emphasized by a very wide track width (1.42 meters) relative to vehicle width. The wheels are flush with the sporty outboard wheel arches and side skirts. The radial design of the wheels and surfaces extending right up to the edge of the rim make the 15-inch alloy wheels appear significantly larger than they actually are.

The wheels that are arranged far outboard in the bumper areas reduce body overhangs to a minimum. All of these features are part of an unmistakable side profile with a very long roof arch as well as clear and large surfaces. Giving shape to its style here are the large doors (with a special space-saving opening mechanism) and the lateral window surfaces, which incline sharply upward at the height of the rear wheel arch and thereby help to form the very independent C-pillar design.

The up! - Interior design

Mounting the engine in the rear opened up entirely new interior concepts. Relative to its exterior size, the space offering is exceptionally forward-thinking. The same is true of its variability: Except for the driver’s seat, all other seats can be folded and removed. Since they are designed as light shells, they can be quickly stowed in one of the cargo areas – besides the front trunk there is also one in the rear – to free up space. Afterwards, the entire passenger compartment length can be utilized as a storage area for especially bulky objects.

To achieve the high level of seating comfort that is usual at Volkswagen, besides their ergonomic design, in the case of the up! this level of comfort is also attained by a simple yet very effective trick: Similar to a self-inf lating air mattress, air can be sucked out of the seat surfaces via a valve. This means that the seats can be adjusted 1:1 to the body anatomies of the occupants who have just taken a seat.

The up! - Intuitive interface

On its up! concept car, Volkswagen is presenting some completely new solutions when it comes to operator controls. Klaus Bischoff, Chief Designer for the Volkswagen Brand, comments on this: “Another reason the up! is so fascinating is because everything, every detail, was thought out anew. In the interior we have a touchscreen with new proximity sensor technology for controlling the navigation, radio, trip computer and climate control systems. It is operated absolutely intuitively. As a result, the most complicated functions can be controlled like child’s play.”

The up! has two central displays. In the cockpit, a 7-inch monitor shows the driver key information such as vehicle speed, fuel level and range, as well as momentary CO2 emissions.

In the center of the instruments – equally easy for driver and front passenger to see and control – an 8-inch monitor shows the way that future human-machine interfaces will look and operate. Here all conceivable functions can be controlled via the mentioned touchscreen, which also reacts via proximity sensor to gestures, i.e. specific hand movements.

Menuing was restocked and reorganized so that people without computer science educations would be able to operate the system. The developers intentionally separated “display” and “control” levels from one another. Always shown on the screen is a control bar with standard functions such as climate control or audio volume control. Developers packaged functions of other higher-order systems – navigation, telephone, radio, Internet, images, movies, etc. – on a display level that has been referred to internally as the “main menu carousel” – a type of virtual carousel. It consists of the icons of different system functions (telephone, navigation, etc.). When the user touches the “main menu carousel” it can be rotated by touchscreen. Visually, this control is just as spectacular as it is intuitive. When the desired function appears on the main menu carousel – such as the telephone – all the user needs to do is move his or her hand to the display to switch over to the telephone menu, thanks to proximity sensor technology. The new type of user control is fun, easy to understand in any cultural environment and very safe. That is precisely what is typical of Volkswagen.

Undoubtedly, the iQ is one of the 2007 Frankfurt Show stars in our books. Who’d ever expect that a Toyota, and especially a hybrid Toyota could ever look so good? A big bravo to the guys working at Toyota’s European design studio in France (ED2). But what is it? Well, simply put, the iQ concept is a proposition for a mini-hybrid car that can seat 3-three adults plus an additional child (3+1). At 2,980mm long, it is 425mm shorter than Aygo, but comparable to Yaris in width and height (1,680 x 1,480mm). If you’re thinking Smart Fortwo, you’re on the right track. Will it go into production? We think so. Not only because Toyota folks said that they’re seriously thinking about it, but mainly because it looks more like a pre-production model than a concept.-Press release and images after the jump

TOYOTA iQ CONCEPT: AN INTELLIGENT URBAN TRANSPORT SOLUTION

KEY POINTS

  • World debut of Toyota iQ concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show
  • Ultra-compact but space efficient design for urban motoring
  • Created at ED2, Toyota’s European design studio
  • Flexible 3+1 interior can seat three adults plus an additional child
  • Focus on low environmental impact

The Toyota iQ concept, unveiled today at the Frankfurt Motor Show, marks a step change in small car design, challenging conventional thinking by being small, yet spacious and high in premium quality features. It’s an ultra-compact vehicle that achieves exceptional space efficiency and is perfectly tailored to the lifestyle needs and environmental concerns of Europe’s modern metropolitans.

The iQ concept was created at ED2, Toyota’s European design studio in the South of France, following the principles of Toyota’s ‘vibrant clarity’ design philosophy – forward-looking, intelligent and energetic, with clarity of purpose and function.

Wahei Hirai, Manager of Toyota Motor Corporation’s design activities, explained: “The iQ concept is designed to reflect and enhance the lifestyle of its owners. In an urban environment, people want to express themselves through dynamic and on-the-edge design, but at the same time rational factors such as size, functionality and CO2 emissions cannot be ignored.

“Bringing these contradictory aims together in synergy was critical to the iQ concept, it’s a way of thinking we call the ‘J-factor’, a philosophy at the heart of all our activities.”

Being two centimetres shy of three metres in length, the iQ concept takes a radical approach to vehicle packaging and design. It challenges the current limitations of ultra-compact urban transport by having a versatile interior that can accommodate three adults, plus luggage space or seating for a fourth, child passenger.

It reinforces Toyota’s commitment to reducing vehicle emissions through innovative design, its small size helping address the problems caused by increased urban congestion.

Design

The iQ concept is designed to convey confidence and vibrancy in every aspect, giving it urban high fashion status. The exterior is simple, but the generous width of the vehicle gives a stable, robust stance. Viewed in profile, the ultra-short overhangs and cab-forward silhouette create a dynamic look, while ensuring maximum usable space is gained in the cabin.

The structures around the 17-inch tyres form part of the minimal overhangs, adding to the sense of strength and agility. Inside, the instrument panel has a simple geometric form that contributes to the overall open feel of the interior, while the centre console flows in a manta ray-shape – complete with chrome finished ‘tail’ – around the instruments to create a vivid central feature, a freeform shape that is echoed in the soft-touch door trims.

Overall, the iQ concept has an ‘on-the-edge’ style, expressed in elements such as the purple shimmer in its pearlescent white paint finish, mock snakeskin steering wheel trim and purple accents in the seats, door trims and dashboard.

Compact, not compromised

The iQ is the world’s smallest four-seat passenger concept car. At 2,980mm long, it is 425mm shorter than Aygo, but comparable to Yaris in width and height (1,680 x 1,480mm).

It has seating for three adults plus a child, with the option of using the fourth seat for luggage space. In regular use, driver and passenger sit side by side, but by sliding the passenger seat further forwards makes room for an extra adult and child in the rear.

Intelligent space-saving design and miniaturised technology help free up interior space, for example the ultra-compact heating unit that takes up less room in the centre console. A single central dial displays the interior temperature and ventilation controls, directly in the driver’s eyeline, with a three-dimensional three-in-one speed, rpm and fuel level read-out mounted above the steering column. Audio and navigation controls are integrated into the steering wheel, with the route-finding information projected in a head-up display.

The panoramic glass sunroof adds to the light and open feel of the cabin, while at night the interior has a darker, more mysterious ambience, adding to the iQ concept’s high fashion quality.

The small size has required no compromise in safety standards, with a strong passenger compartment safety cell that ensures optimum impact energy absorption.

In presenting the iQ concept, Toyota reveals an intelligent new design and technology package, a radical solution to the challenge of personal urban transport.

We're heading home from Frankfurt but before we go and drop dead, we thought we’d start our Show coverage with one of the show cars that grasped our attention, the BMW X6 Concept. Despite our initial, negative thoughts after seeing several spy shots, we actually liked BMW’s “Sports Activity Coupe” considering it –believe it or not, as one of the best Bungle-era designed bimmers. Heck, maybe this is what the X5 should have looked like in the first place. And if you’re wondering, BMW said that the X5 based X6 may lead to a production version. However, we are in a position to know that this car will find its way in a BMW store near you in mid-2008. Period. -Press release and images after the jump
