Bitter Vero Update: High-Res Image Gallery

Wednesday, October 17, 2007 | 0 comments » Categories | , | Bookmark and Share

We just got our hands on a new set of high resolution images of the Bitter Vero that was unveiled earlier today (click here for details). Did the fresh pictures change our mind about the Holden Statesman V8 based Vero? Mmmm, nop. And before you call us "bitter" we can think of about 122,000 reasons why not, beginning with the fact that, a slightly revised Holden Statesman cannot cost… €121,975 ($172,800). It's insane, it's ridiculous it's... I don't know how to describe it, but it's definetely wrong. -Image gallery after the jump

Yes, you’ll see turbochargers, performance packs, sporty bodykits and cool 18-inch rims. But what we’d really like to see is Ford dumping the U.S. Focus and bringing the European gen-2 model to the States. Then Ford could give those tuning folks a nice Focus ST to play around with. Now, that would be something to get excited about. -Details and images after the jump

Additional pricing ranges from $28,960 for the Odyssey EX to $40,610 for the fully-equipped Odyssey Touring. -Details and high-res pics after the jump

Press Release-

The significantly-updated-for-2008 Honda Odyssey minivan goes on sale today with a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price1 (MSRP) starting at $25,860, plus destination and handling charges, for the well-equipped Odyssey LX, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced.

Additional pricing ranges from $28,960 for the nicely-equipped Odyssey EX to $40,610 for the ultra-luxurious Odyssey Touring that includes the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™ with voice recognition and rearview camera, Bluetooth®2 HandsFreeLink®, DVD Rear Entertainment System, and Michelin® PAX® run-flat technology.

The Odyssey receives new exterior styling along with a more fuel-efficient version of the available Variable Cylinder Management™ (VCM®) i-VTEC V-6 engine. Exterior styling focuses on a bolder, six-sided grille design and a front bumper fascia with crisp lines that add to the vehicle's dynamic and premium appearance.

"The Odyssey is the king of the Honda lineup when it comes to moving the maximum number of people in maximum comfort," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "For 2008, the Odyssey strengthens its styling and functional advantages while adding even more premium features."

Four new and notable available premium features include Bluetooth HandsFreeLink (available Odyssey EX-L and Touring), 4-way power passenger seat (standard Odyssey EX-L and Touring), rearview camera display integrated into the rearview mirror (standard Odyssey EX-L) and memory-linked side mirrors with reverse gear tilt-down (standard Odyssey Touring).

Interior styling receives updates in the form of revised colors and textures for the instrument panel, along with premium fabric for Odyssey LX and EX seating surfaces. Further interior refinements include an additional storage bin in the 2nd Row PlusOne Seat™ (standard on Odyssey EX, EX-L and Touring), standard MP3/Windows®3 Media Audio (WMA) compatibility (CD-based) and a standard auxiliary input jack.

The Odyssey achieves the highest five-star crash safety rating by the federal government for both frontal and side impacts4. In keeping with the Honda "Safety for Everyone" initiative, all Odyssey models are equipped with Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®), also known as electronic stability control; standard anti-lock brakes with brake assist; advanced dual-stage, dual-threshold driver's and front passenger's SRS airbags; front side airbags with passenger-side Occupant Protection Detection System (OPDS); three-row side-curtain airbags with a rollover sensor; and a pedestrian injury mitigation design in the front of the vehicle. An Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure provides enhanced occupant protection in a frontal collision. New for 2008, active front seat head restraints and daytime running lights have been added.

Known for its industry trend-setting One-Motion 60/40 Split 3rd-Row Magic Seat®, the Odyssey's innovative eight-passenger seating areas (seven-passenger on LX) quickly and easily adapt between passenger and cargo duties. The 3rd-Row Magic Seat can accommodate up to three passengers and still provide 38.4 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the seats, or fold completely flat into the floor for cargo duty to create 91.1 cubic feet of cargo volume while still maintaining room for five passengers (four passengers on LX). With the second row seats removed, total cargo volume expands to a voluminous 147.4 cubic feet. For comparison, total interior volume measures 209.8 cubic feet for passenger and cargo volume combined - representing a total volume greater than two Civic Sedan interior volumes combined.

The 2nd-Row PlusOneSeat™ integrates a new storage bin inside the seat structure and is standard equipment on the Odyssey EX and EX-L. The 2nd-Row PlusOneSeat has been added as standard equipment to the Odyssey Touring, replacing the standard removable center console, while retaining similar functionality and adding a seating position to the previously seven-passenger Touring model.

Designed with families in mind, a total of three Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) child seat attachment systems exist: two are located in the outboard second-row seating positions and one is located in the middle third-row seating position.

Standard comfort and convenience features include dual-zone air conditioning (tri-zone automatic climate control on Odyssey EX, EX-L and Touring), tilt and telescope steering wheel, power windows and door locks, keyless entry and cruise control.

Available premium features include the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™5 with voice recognition, an 8-inch screen, and Zagat Survey®6 restaurant guide information, and a Honda DVD Entertainment System with a 9-inch screen. A rearview camera aids rear visibility on the Odyssey EX-L equipped with the available navigation system. Odyssey EX-L models without the available navigation system provide a rearview camera display via a 2.5-inch monitor embedded in the rearview mirror.

Based on the model, two engine choices exist. The 3.5-liter, all-aluminum, SOHC VTEC® engine on the Odyssey LX and EX produces 244 horsepower at 5750 rpm and 240 lb-ft. of torque at 5000 rpm. The Odyssey LX and EX models achieve an EPA-rated city/highway fuel economy of 16/23 mpg.

The Odyssey EX-L and Touring models feature a 3.5-liter, all-aluminum, SOHC i-VTEC® V-6 engine with VCM for enhanced fuel efficiency. This engine produces 241 horsepower at 5700 rpm and 242 lb-ft. of torque at 4900 rpm.

For 2008, a new generation of VCM provides the additional capability to selectively deactivate either two or three of the engine's six cylinders during cruising and deceleration (instead of three, exclusively). Similar to the new VCM system available on the 2008 Accord, the Odyssey's new VCM engine expands the cylinder deactivation operating range, which helps to increase fuel efficiency in a wider variety of driving conditions and speeds.

An "ECO" indicator light illuminates on the instrument panel when the vehicle is operating at an optimal level of fuel efficiency. The Odyssey EX-L and Touring models achieve an EPA-rated city/highway fuel economy of 17/25 mpg7.

Vehicles equipped with VCM use both an audio system-based Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) system and a chassis-based Active Control Engine Mount (ACM) system to cancel noise and vibration that can occur during cylinder deactivation.

An independent front and rear suspension and a rigid unit body structure help provide comfortable and refined ride performance. Additional chassis components include power-assisted 4-wheel disc brakes and variable power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering. Odyssey LX, EX and EX-L models have 16-inch wheels (alloy on EX and EX-L) with all-season 235/65R16 tires. Odyssey Touring models are equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels and all-season 235/60R17 tires (standard); Michelin® PAX® System run-flat technology wheels and tires are available (460 mm wheels and 235-710R 460A tires).

eBay: Scooby Doo Mystery Machine Limousine

Wednesday, October 17, 2007 | 3 comments » Categories | , , , | Bookmark and Share

Can’t say that I ever liked Scooby Doo and his animated mystery pals -let alone the pitiful movie, though at some point of my childhood era I did actually buy a toy version of the Mystery Machine. I didn’t like it and I don’t like this particular replica of the Mystery Machine that we discovered on eBay UK either. Based on a ’93 Chevy van, it was used as a limo car. It can fit 8 passengers in its Scooby Doo themed interior which is equipped, among other things, with a flatscreen TV, DVD player, neon-lights and a smoke machine. Now tell me; wouldn’t you be scared to death if you saw your 16-year-old teen girl entering this vehicle? -More images after the jump

Not even 24 hours past yesterday’s massive Nissan GT-R leak which started off with the front cover of Motortrend’s December issue (which comes out in November…), and Autoweek has posted an article that includes a bunch of juicy mechanical details! Based on a modified version of Nissan’s new PM platform which is an evolution of the ever-present FM platform found in various Nissan and Infiniti models like the 350Z, the GT-R is equipped with a twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 petrol unit. It too is an evolution of the VQ engine family that we all know and love in Nissans and Infinitis. Output is rated at 473 Hp / 6,400 rpm while maximum torque at 433 lb-ft or 587 Nm, available from 3200 to 5200 rpm.

Power is transferred to all four wheels via Nissan’s new dual-clutch six-speed automatic gearbox (like the Audi/VW DSG gearbox). Gearshifts take a mere 0.2 seconds, but we won’t hide the fact that we’d want a GT-R with a manual gearbox. According to Nissan’s engineers, the four–wheel-drive system splits torque by 50/50 when the vehicle’s speed is under 25 mph (40 km/h) while above that and with normal driving (if that’s possible…), torque split is 40/60 (front-rear). However, torque split can go up to 2/98 under hard acceleration. The GT-R also comes equipped with adjustable Bilstein Damptronic shock absorbers with three settings: : Racing, Sports and Comfort. -Continued after the jump

Nissan announces that the GT-R sprints from standstill to 60 mph – 96 km/h in just 3.5 sec; the first quarter mile in 11.7 sec while top speed is 193 mph or 310 km/h. Impressed? Wait until you hear the price when it hits U.S. shores in the second –quarter of 2008: low-$70,000s (€50,000)! Basically, what Nissan’s promising us is, Porsche 911 Turbo ($126,200) performance and driving dynamics at half the price! Ok, the interior looks like a letdown, but the GT-R costs as much as a BMW M3. That’s tempting, very tempting…

2008 Citroen C5 II: Official Images

Wednesday, October 17, 2007 | 7 comments » Categories | , | Bookmark and Share

Our search for official images of the all-new 2008 Citroen C5 paid off as shortly after we discovered the anonymous camera phone pics from the dealer presentation in France (see here), we found a set of 11 high-resolution images wondering freely in the net. It was bound to happen…

We’re still in the dark when it comes to specs but we do know that the all-new C5 is based on the Peugeot 407 chassis and like the current C5, it too will be equipped with Citroen’s fabulous hydropneumatic suspension. We also now that Citroen’s designers have “sculptured” a beautiful and dynamic shape for the new C5 which will be offered initially in sedan and station wagon variants. Same goes for the interior though we could have done without that weird steering wheel with the fixed hub and the 20,000 buttons. -See our high-resolution image gallery after the jump

Here come the diesels -at last… Audi will launch its diesel-engine “enterprise” in the N. American market in early 2008 with the Q7 3.0 TDI while in mid 2008, U.S. buyers will also be able to opt for the new A4 3.0 TDI. Described by the German carmaker as the “cleanest diesel engine in the world”, the 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel engine fulfils the LEV II Bin 5 emission standard, which is operative in the US states of California, New York, Massachusetts, Maine and Vermont.

In terms of power, the V6 diesel unit develops an output of 240 Hp and a maximum torque figure of 405.7-lbs/ft), 90% of which is available from 1,500 to 3,250 rpm. According to Audi, the 3.0 TDI burns up to 35 percent less fuel than the average of petrol engines typically used in the USA.

According to calculations done by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. could save 1.4 million barrels of crude oil every day if one third of all passenger cars and light-duty commercial vehicles were equipped with modern diesel units. And while that may sound “utopian” today when the diesel engine share in the American market is just around four percent, a recent study performed by J. D. Power predicts that diesel engines will have a 12 to 15 percent share of the US market in 2015. The sooner, the better we say.

2008 Citroen C5 II Presentation Pics!

Wednesday, October 17, 2007 | 0 comments » Categories | , | Bookmark and Share

No thanks to a set of camera phone images (from what seams to be a dealer presentation in France) that leaked into the net today, we have the opportunity to get a sneak peak of Citroen’s all-new C5 II sedan. Set to be officially unveiled to European journalists tomorrow (Oct. 18), the C5 is based on the Peugeot 407’s “hardware”.

As many might of you might remember, the C5’s design was previewed via the C5-Airscape Concept that premiered at the Frankfurt Show in September. However, the C5 production version wont be available as a Cabrio. Instead, Europeans will be able to choose between sedan and station-wagon variants which can be equipped with wide variety of petrol and diesel engines. Sales are expected to start in Europe in March 2008. We’ll have more on Citroen's "chic" mid-size model tomorrow night when the French automaker will officially reveal all the details. -More pics after the jump

Who said that only Americans (e.g. Pontiac and Buick) rebody Holdens? So do the Germans, and in particular Erich Bitter’s homonymous coachbuilding company. Two years after Bitter showed of its latest product, the Holden Monaro / Pontiac GTO based CD02 Coupe, the German coachbuilder announced the launch of their latest creation called the Vero. The sports sedan is based on the Holden Statesman (long-wheel-base version of the Holden Commodore / Pontiac G8) and it’s equipped with GM’s 362Hp 6.0-liter V8 matted to a 5-speed automatic transmission. Bitter redesigned the front and rear end of the car which now measures around 5,200 mm in length (205-inches) and it sits on 20-inch alloy wheels. According to the Germans, the Vero features suspension upgrades. -Continued after the jump

Inside, Bitter dressed the whole interior with high quality leather and added several luxury extras like a DVD system with monitors incorporated in the front headrests. The Vero will feature a basic price of 121,975 Euros (about $172,800) in Germany. That’s a lot of money. Even if Bitter only produces 100 units of the car, somehow we don’t think that “exclusivity” would make us overlook the fact that the Vero is priced on par with cars like the Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG (€131,000 in Germany).

Seven test drivers from the Nissan Technical Centre Europe (NTCE) in Bedfordshire, UK took turns piloting a 1.5dCi Qashqai in order to see how far they could go with one single tank of fuel. The light-footed pilots managed to travel the entire length of the UK, from Land’s End on the southwest coast of England to John o’Groat’s on the northern tip of Scotland without stopping once to refuel. The seven drivers, who set off on 25 September, managed an average fuel consumption of 56.1 US MPG (4.2 l/100 km) on the 867 mile or 1,387 km run.

What’s even more amazing is the fact that there were still another seven liters of fuel left in the tank when they crossed the finish line at the next day (Sep. 26) which was enough to cover an extra 110 miles (176 km). That means that the diesel-powered Qashqai could have traveled a total of 977 miles or 1.563 km on one single tank of fuel!

eBay: Ferrari F1 Replica

Tuesday, October 16, 2007 | 0 comments » Categories | , | Bookmark and Share

To answer the most obvious question that arises upon viewing this Ferrari F1 replica; no, you can’t use it to stroll down your neighborhood road in unequaled style. It would be cool, we know, but this is a static show car meaning there’s no engine or gearbox, and nor was it designed to have them fitted. You could however impress everyone that passes by your house but we doubt that it’s worth giving £8,000 ($16,200 or €11,500). -Continued after the jump

Aww, aint that cute? Well, no it’s actually funny but that’s another story. As you might have read on Carscoop earlier today (click here), GM’s Vice President, Bob Lutz visited Australia along with GM Vice President for Global Design Ed Welburn to check out Holden and the internationally sourced product development team working on the carmaker’s global rear-wheel-drive cars. When Ed Welburn saw his creation in near production form he ran over to it and, well you can see what happened in the image above. We did request the photo earlier and although this is pure coincidence, just in case it isn’t, we’d like to ask Bob Lutz for a second image -there must be more images stored in that Blackberry! In what has been described as a David (Ramblers’ Association) vs Goliath (BMW) legal battle, UK district judge, Witney, decided to allow the car-giant and Oxfordshire County Council to close a 2000 year-old-path that stood in the way of development at MINI’s plant in Cowley, Oxfordshire.

The Ramblers’ Association (a group that represents and promotes walking) supports that up to 400 people use the path every day. Although BMW said that they will
fund an alternative path, the walkers' advocacy group said it was ‘severely disappointed. -Continued after the jump

Adrian Morris, head of the RA’s footpath team commented: “We are bitterly disappointed that BMW will be allowed to close this community’s historic path, and deny hundreds of local residents per day a safe and quiet means of accessing work and the countryside beyond. The judge’s decision to close this safe and pleasant path flies in the face of the fight against obesity and climate change by encouraging people off their local paths and back into their cars”.

Call me incult, but if I saw this on my driveway I’d probably be practicing my French on the next-door neighbor’s kids. But someone actually paid a hefty $85,000 or £42,000 to obtained this car last Saturday (13 Oct.) during the Contemporary Art Auction at the Phillips de Pury & Company saleroom in London. The painting is the work of English artist, Tracey Emin, who’s planning to paint three other 500s (click here), one before the end of the year and two in 2008. All of them will be auctioned. The good news is that proceeds from the sales will go to the artist’s chosen charity PEAS, which is raising funds for a school library in Uganda.

But, honestly, we couldn’t care less. All we're interested in is showing you the full image gallery of the most highly anticipated premier at next week’s 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. Of course, as you’d expect from Carscoop, we did a little research of our own and we discovered a set of higher resolution images. In terms of specs, the 2008 GT-R is equipped with a twin-turbo V6 engine that takes the high-performance coupe from zero to 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 3.5 sec (quarter mile in 11.7 sec) and to a top speed of 192 mph – 308 km/h. Prices are expected to begin under $80,000. (PS: What do you have to say about the interior?) –Full image gallery after the jump

When you watch tons of automotive videos every week as we do, scarcely do any of them, touch you. Most are monotonous and uninspired with one objective: show a few details, nothing more, and nothing less. What’s there to like? Every once in a while though, some carmaker surprises us, just like Porsche did today with the creation of the truly amazing 2008 911 GT2 promo film. Actually, it’s more than a promotional video; it’s a piece of art. Take a look at it and tell us what you think.

Suspension specialist “H&R” is offering a new sport spring kit for the Audi R8 bringing the mid-engine sports car’s front 15 mm and its rear 30 mm closer to the road. According to H&R, whereas the stock R8 did not quite succeed in lapping the Nordschleifein race track in Germany (Nurburgring) in less than 8 minutes, thanks to the new suspension components, the upgraded version manages to drop time under 8 min. Moreover, the suspension specialist supports that the spring kit is totally suitable for everyday use. Tip: if you’re interested, ask a H&R dealer if you can take a car equipped with the spring kit for a short ride and decide for yourself it’s actually worth it. -Continued

The OneOne, pronounced “won-won” (Japanese description of a dog bark –what happened to woof, woof?) is Nissan’s proposal for this year’s 2007 LA Show Design Contest. According to the design team, the OneOne fulfils various needs of a family like retrieving dry cleaning and groceries or taking the children to school. Additionally, buyers can opt for a love pack which transforms the OneOne to the ultimate companion for those lonely winter nights –you wish… -Press release & pics after the jump

Nissan OneOne, a Friendly Pet

In the year 2057 robots have become an integral part of our lives blurring the line between humans and machines. The Nissan OneOne is the ultimate pet; a friendly, helpful member of the family of the future. OneOne (pronounced “won-won,” an endearing Japanese description of a barking dog) takes care of every aspect of the family’s busy lives from retrieving dry cleaning and groceries, to tending to the children. Guided by a real time GPS network, OneOne can take the children safely to school, soccer practice and back home in time for dinner.

OneOne takes mobility to a new level. Using synthetic muscles in its “legs,” it propels itself along by skating, much like you would on a pair of rollerblades. From performance car to city car, it lies down for speed or stands up for better visibility, allowing for more nimble navigation and easier parking.

OneOne fulfills every need from dutiful pet to spirited sports car in a design that makes it a welcomed member of the family.

GM’s Vice Chairman Bob Lutz completed a business trip to Australia visiting Holden (and apparently the 2007 Sydney Motor Show) and decided to do a write-up on the company’s official blog (Fastlane). Lutz was quite impressed with GM’s Aussie subsidiary and especially with Holden’s “passion for excellence and dedication to the product” as he described the carmaker in his own words.

He also had the chance to take several current and forthcoming rear-wheel drive models for a spin including the first fully representative prototype of the 2009 Camaro with close to final surfaces. Though the car isn’t ready yet, GM’s 72-year-old VC was moderately impressed with the Camaro. Here’s what he had to say about it:

“Twisting the key produced a muted rumble from the big V8. We pulled away smoothly in the first cog of the new, slick, six-speed manual. Depressing the accelerator shifted the world into fast forward, with three or four more quick upshifts. The car had just been completed and had had no tuning or finessing. But I loved the response, the sound, the steering and the brakes. There's more work to be done, for sure, and the group knows it. They still have time for further development. The goal of the team led by Gene Stefanyshyn is to produce the finest car in its class, ever. Do I think they will get there? I wouldn't bet against that team!” -Continued after the jump

Though Lutz did take pictures, he noted that he couldn’t share them with us. Oh come on, a little leak never hurt anybody. Think of all the buzz you’d create…

Kia Clarifies Mesa’s U.S. Competitors

Tuesday, October 16, 2007 | 0 comments » Categories | , , | Bookmark and Share

Through its official blog (Kia Buzz), Kia informed us today that there was some sort of a translation mix-up in a series of English reports from Korean media referring to the 2008 HM’s U.S. competitors. We discovered on of those articles in The Korea Times and it stated that the production version of the Mesa Concept is aimed at competing with Toyota’s Lexus RX350, BMW’s X5 and Mercedes Benz’s M-Class models in the United States. Wrong; according to Kia, the Mesa (codenamed HM) will compete against the Ford Explorer, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chevrolet Trailblazer, Toyota 4Runner and Nissan Pathfinder. -Continued after the jump

Moreover, Kia clarifies that the ongoing HM naming survey –there are three candidate names: Mohave, Windriver and Opelia, is only for the Korean market vehicle and not for the export model. Too bad, journos would have had a gassy blast if you picked out Windriver. However, Mohave does have a nice ring to it.

Mercedes is reintroducing diesel cars in California with the market launch of the E320 BLUETEC, the first diesel-powered vehicle to be available in the sunshine state for nearly a decade -no thanks to California's stringent emissions requirements. Beginning from today, Californian customers will be able to obtain a E320 BLUETEC under a two-year/24,000 mile lease program through Mercedes-Benz Financial Services. According to the German carmaker, the E320 BLUETEC is lease-priced on a par with its petrol sibling, the E350. -Press release after the jump

Mercedes is First to Bring Diesel Back to California

E320 BLUETEC Makes Market Debut in Los Angeles at Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek at Smashbox Studios

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 15 -- On the runway at this week's Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek at Smashbox Studios, Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) unveiled a version of its E320 BLUETEC, a diesel sedan that will immediately be available in limited numbers to California customers through a special two- year/24,000-mile lease.

California's stringent emissions requirements have kept new diesel automobiles models off the California market for the better part of a decade. The new E320 BLUETEC - distinguished as "2007 World Green Car" by an international panel of journalists earlier this year - changes all that.

BLUETEC denotes state-of-the-art engine and exhaust technology which produces the cleanest diesels available on the market today. Utilizing this technology, the V6-powered E320 BLUETEC diesel is able to provide the powerful torque of a large V8 engine with the low fuel consumption of a four-cylinder compact.

"In order to be able to provide the power and economy of diesel technology throughout the world, we had to make the diesel version as clean as the gasoline model. With BLUETEC, nitrogen oxides can be reduced to such an extent that our diesel vehicles will satisfy the strictest emission regulations in the world -- even in the future. This makes Mercedes-Benz the first manufacturer in the world to fully bring all exhaust gas components under control," said Dr. Leopold Mikulic, head of powertrain development at Mercedes-Benz Cars.

Beginning October 15, MBUSA will offer its E320 BLUETEC to customers under a two-year/24,000 mile lease program through Mercedes-Benz Financial Services. The E320 BLUETEC is lease-priced on a par with its gasoline sibling, the E350.

The special limited-mileage lease program is the first step in the company's plans to offer consumers diesel alternatives in all 50 states. MBUSA will offer 50-state diesels across its SUV model lines (M, GL and R- Class) late next year and will continue to add to its alternative powertrain offerings.

According to Tom Cackette, executive director for the California Air Resources Board (CARB), "The E320 is testimony to demanding nothing but the cleanest vehicles for California. Mercedes-Benz has developed a diesel emission control system that results in a car as clean as comparable gasoline vehicles being sold here. This vehicle has shed the reputation of diesel as a dirty technology. And we hope California has shed its anti-diesel reputation by certifying this vehicle as the first diesel passenger car to meet the most stringent smog emission standards in the world."

MBUSA, which has sold diesels here in the United States for 40 years, believes diesels are an ideal solution for today's luxury car buyers because they yield a significant increase in fuel efficiency without sacrificing performance or interior room. The E320 BLUETEC can go nearly 700 highway miles on a single tank of fuel.

"We're breaking new ground here as we pave the way for the return of the diesel to California," said Ernst Lieb, president and CEO of MBUSA. "BLUETEC is the most promising technology for customers who want to get up to 20-40 percent higher fuel efficiency without sacrificing the performance and the driving characteristics they're used to." According to Lieb, the California market plays a critical role in the comeback of the diesel: "In addition to being one of the top automotive markets in the world, California has tremendous influence. We know we have quite a few loyal diesel buyers there who have been waiting for the opportunity to get back into a diesel, but we also want to tap into a new group of buyers who are interested in making their dollar go farther without compromising performance or their personal style."

Beyond their fuel efficiency, from an environmental standpoint, BLUETEC vehicles are the cleanest diesels available in the world today. Since diesels inherently burn less fuel than gasoline vehicles, they also produce significantly lower emissions of carbon dioxide (C02). Also, in BLUETEC vehicles particulate levels are reduced to levels comparable -- or better than -- that of gasoline-powered vehicles. Similarly, NOX emissions are reduced to meet the most stringent exhaust limits in the world.

The California lease program will function as a bridge as MBUSA prepares to begin phasing in 50-state BLUETEC vehicles nationwide starting in 2008. The first step will be the extension of the special lease program to other states which do not currently allow sales of new diesel automobiles in January 2008. Later in 2008, Mercedes will introduce another BLUETEC system on its M-, R- and GL-Class vehicles. This system utilizes AdBlue injection, a process that adds precisely measured quantities of a urea-based solution into the exhaust stream which enhances long-term emissions performance sufficient to meet the stringent BIN 5 standards.

Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking confirmed in an interview he gave to the Sunday Times (Oct 14, 2007) that his company is prepared to take control of VW, if Germany’s so-called “Volkswagen law” is ruled illegal next week (October 23) by the European Court of Justice.

“I believe they will write it off. And if they do, we will look at what makes sense,” Wiedeking told Sunday Times. “We already have a lot of options to purchase shares at less than their current price. We are prepared.”

Germany’s so-called ‘Volkswagen law’, was introduced to guard against hostile takeover when the present company was transferred to German control by the British after the second world war. The law prevents any one shareholder from exercising more than 20% of the voting rights and gives both the federal government and the state of Lower Saxony the right to two seats on Volkswagen’s supervisory board. -Continued after the jump

Porsche's intentions became more than clear when in March, 2007, the company acquired a 31% stake in Volkswagen, the world’s fourth-largest carmaker. And the outcome was more than positive as Wiedeking smugly pointed out in his interview to the Sunday Times: “We paid €5 billion for 31% of Volkswagen and now that stake is worth €16-€17 billion. Not a bad investment, eh?”. You're damn right...

One down (Aston Martin) two, maybe even three (Volvo), to go: Ford plans to get rid (others call it a sale) of its two remaining British premium brands Jaguar and Land Rover until mid-December, the Spanish daily El Mundo reported, citing Ford Europe chairman and CEO John Fleming. "We are well on and in two months at the most we'll know which of the groups interested in the brands will be their new owner," Fleming told El Mundo.

When asked if the two British marques could be sold separately, Fleming ruled out the possibility saying: “"No, not really. They are both very integrated and it would be difficult to sell them separately”. As for your next obvious question, Ford is still thinking about what it should do with Volvo. "Volvo is a fundamental partner in the development of safety and environmental technology. It would be very dangerous to hand it over to a competitor," he told El Mundo.

Rumors: BMW To Create Eco-Friendly 4th Brand

Monday, October 15, 2007 | 2 comments » Categories | , | Bookmark and Share

Mark our words; over the next few months we’re going to be hearing a lot of rumours about BMW Group (BMW, MINI & Rolls Royce) and its alleged 4th brand. Following last week’s report from UK magazine Autoexpress referring to the renaissance of the Triumph brand (BMW holds the rights to the name), German business magazine Wirtschaftswoche is now reporting that the Bavarians are in search of an engineering firm that will help them develop a series of eco-friendly vehicles for a new brand.

In his speech towards the group’s shareholders back in September, BMW Group CEO , Norbert Reithofer did not rule out acquisitions or the creation of a new brand. However Reithofer did note that none of the existing brands fit neatly into the group.

Ok, so BMW is interested in adding a fourth brand to its portfolio. What next? Well, basically the Bavarian’s have three options: A- Acquire an existing brand that’s for sale (eg. Volvo), B- Create a new brand from scratch and C- Revive a brand using one of the names you hold the rights to (eg. Triumph). Every option has its pros and cons, but to make a long story short, we’d go for option “B”; create a new brand. An “eco-friendly” brand sounds even better. -Continued after the jump

Why go into all that hassle to buy an existing carmaker along with factories, debts etc or use one of the useless Brit names (petrolheads aside, the younger generations have no idea of obsolete marques like Truimph). We’re not saying that it’s going to be easy (think Mercedes-Benz and Smart), but BMW has proven the past two decades that, with the exception of the failed Rover/MG-Rover Group marriage, it can create and market vehicles that people want to buy.

These are the first pictures of the 2008 Dodge Challenger production version featured without a trace of camouflage. The camera phone shots were taken during a Chrysler dealer announcement show in Las Vegas this past week. Thankfully, Dodge has remained loyal to the 2006 concept with minor differences including the adoption of a (invisible) B-pillar, revised tail-lights, slightly redesigned rear bumper that’s about an inch longer in order to comply with safety regulations and the addition of a boot spoiler for the SRT8 version. At least that’s what we can make out from the pictures. -Continued after the jump

According to the guys that posted the camera phone images on “Ontario Street Car” and we have on reason not to believe them, the Dodge Challenger will come out in March as a ’08 model. The first batch of Challengers, about 5,500 units will all be SRT8s with automatic gearboxes priced at around $38,000. In July 2008, Dodge will begin production of the ’09 models which will be offered with with three engine choices: 3.5L V6, 5.7L V8 and 6.1L V8 HEMIS.

We’ve obtained an internal Volkswagen document addressed to VW dealers in Europe that informs them on the market launch of three important new models: the Scirocco Coupe, the Golf VI and the next generation Polo. The first model to arrive in European dealerships will be the Golf based Scirocco. The production version of the IROC Concept (see here) that made its premier at the 2006 Paris Show, will be available across Europe during the fourth quarter of 2008. If VW decides to import the Scirroco in the U.S., it shouldn’t be expected earlier than mid-2009. -Continued after the jump

According to the internal document, the sixth generation of VW’s compact class Golf will go on sale in Europe during the first quarter of 2009. Originally, VW planned to launch the Golf VI at next year’s Geneva Show in March but VW’s new boss, Martin Winterkorn, postponed the presentation for the Paris Show in September of 2008 as he was not pleased with the vehicle’s appearance. The US spec Golf should make its appearance in early 2010.

Finally, the next-generation Polo supermini based on the same platform as the recently introduced Skoda Fabia, will begin its European career during the second half of 2009. An the U.S.? Well, unless gas prices hike over $4 a gallon, we doubt it that the Polo will make it on the other side of the Atlantic.

Using the V8 powered H3 Alpha as a base, Geiger equipped the American SUV with an optics package that includes blue race-stripes, humongous 23-inch alloy wheels in massive 305/35 23R tires and tinted windows / indicators. Buyers can also opt for 24-inch alloy wheels, but it looks already silly enough so we’d avoid it if we were you. For the interior, Geiger offers carbon-fibre trim along with leather sport seats and a multimedia system with monitors incorporated in the front headrests. -Continued after the jump

We can’t figure out why, but Geiger equips the Hummer H3 GT with an engine tuning kit that raises the V8’s maximum performance to 300 Hp. That’s just a mere 5 Hp more than the standard 5.3-liter V8 unit’s output. To complement the 5Hp power boost (…) the German tuner provides a sport suspension, which lowers the ride height of the SUV.

BMW 1-Series Coupe US Brochure

Saturday, October 13, 2007 | 0 comments » Categories | , | Bookmark and Share

The guys who’re completely addicted to the BMW 1-Series have obtained the U.S. brochure for bimmer’s compact Coupe which will be available in the N. American market in 128i and 135i guises (click here for the high-res image gallery). Apparently, the most interesting sections of the brochure concern the equipment and color list. However, what caught our attention was the spec paper as BMW announces that the automatic versions weigh a couple of hundred of pounds more than their manual-gearbox siblings. Guess that’s what you get with preliminary specs. -Brochure scans after the jump

“The Chevy Volt” paid Boston a visit this week, interior and all. While at the “Volt Event”, which is hitting 3 other major cities in the U.S. (Miami, L.A and San Francisco), I had the opportunity to bring our readers’ questions and concerns about the new electric car to the engineers and designers that were in attendance.

In 1996, per direct orders from Mr. Lutz himself, the design team for the Volt began frantically sketching drawings of what will hopefully, one day, become a hallmark vehicle for General Motors. Bob Boniface, the Design Director of the Volt (father of the Camaro design) told us that GM’s main priority right now is to tie up the loose ends in terms of design and engineering and put this car into production sometime in 2010. Bob and his team meet twice a week, every week, with Bob Lutz to go over last minute ideas and production details. So for those of you that are anxious to see this on the road, don’t worry, it’s closer than it’s ever been. -Continued after the jump

For those of you that are more concerned with the design and overall logistics of the vehicle there’s good news and not so good news. There were many floating rumours about the battery life and whether Volt buyers would have to cash in some coin for an extra battery but it’s guaranteed to last 10 years and will probably be leased through GM.

But just to clarify confusion, here’s how it works. The Volt can be fully charged by plugging it into a 110 volt outlet for 6 hours a day. When the lithium battery is charged, the Volt will deliver 40 miles or pure electric range regardless of speed. When the battery runs out, the three cylinder turbo charged engine spins at a constant speed to create electricity and replenish the battery which in turn increases the fuel economy and range. The theory behind the engineering in terms of fuel conservation is that if you live with in 30 miles of work (60 miles round trip) and charged your battery every night or during the day, you would get about 150 miles per gallon.

The Volt concept uses a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged engine which is designed to run on E85, a blend of 15 percent gas and 85 percent ethanol. With E85, fuel economy of 150 mpg using gasoline would translate into more than 525 miles per petroleum gallon. But if you forget to charge the vehicle or go away on a vacation far from home, the Volt would still get 50 mpg by using the engine to convert gasoline into electricity and extend its range up to 640 miles, more than double that of today’s conventional vehicles. Chevy is also playing around with “variant” systems such as the Volt with hydrogen powered fuel cell and diesel engines, which drive the generator to create electricity using biodiesel (for our European friends).

So I must admit, its capabilities are very cool. But let’s talk design for a bit. According to GM, “the Chevrolet Volt’s athletic design challenges the notion that an environmentally conscious vehicle can’t be beautiful and possess an aesthetic spirit that matches its driving characteristics.” But we’re skeptical, especially since about 4 different people at the event told us that even though “the production model won’t look exactly like concept model, you’ll be able to recognize it as the Volt if you see it driving down the street.” For me, this raises a red flag. If GM can just get the design aspect right on this car they can hit a home run just like they did with the Camaro and Corvette. Hopefully, they’ll take the kinetic idea that the concept exhibits and incorporate it into the production model casting away the typical “boxy” style GM cars are so well known for. GM’s “Germanized” Saturn brand announced today that the 2008 Vue Green Line Hybrid will boast a fuel economy rating of 25 mpg (9.4lt/100 km) in city and 32 mpg (7.3lt/100 km) on the highway which is about 27 percent better than the non-hybrid four-cylinder Vue. The Vue Green line will go on sale in the forthcoming weeks with a base price of $24,795. Interestingly, Saturn also revealed that in 2008, it will introduce a 2-mode hybrid Vue, which will increase fuel economy by an approximately 45 percent over the comparable non-hybrid model while in the near future their will also be a plug-in hybrid version that will get just about twice the fuel economy of any SUV currently sold on the market. -Press release after the jump

PRESS RELEASE

Detroit
-- Saturn today announced that the all-new 2008 Saturn Vue Green Line hybrid will have a fuel economy rating of 25 miles per gallon in city and 32 miles per gallon on the highway -- the best highway mileage of any sport utility vehicle.

Saturn also announced that the Vue Green Line will have a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $24,795, making it the most affordable hybrid SUV on the market.

"You can go green without going broke," said Saturn General Manager Jill Lajdziak, "and with the Vue Green Line, you also don't have to give up utility, safety or comfort."

High mileage, long range

In combined city and highway driving, the Vue hybrid's fuel economy estimate is 27 percent better than the non-hybrid four-cylinder Vue. The fuel economy estimates are calculated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, using the government's new 2008 testing procedure that was revised to better reflect real-world mileage.

The hybrid Vue's 28 mpg combined city/highway rating gives the Saturn line-up a compact utility with significantly better fuel economy than the Honda CRV or Toyota RAV-4. The Vue Green Line also provides SUV capability with better fuel economy than that of popular sedans, such as the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.

The Vue Green Line's highway fuel economy will allow the vehicle to travel up to 585 highway miles on one tank of gasoline, farther than any competitor's SUV. That is enough range to travel roundtrip from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, from Washington, D.C. to New York City or from Detroit to Chicago. Potential one-way single-tank trips include Atlanta to St. Louis, Denver to Salt Lake City and Milwaukee to Kansas City.

Hybrid technology, features

The Vue Green Line's hybrid system combines sophisticated controls with a precise electric motor/generator mated to the 2.4-liter, 172-horsepower, four-cylinder engine and a modified automatic transmission. The system delivers fuel economy gains through advanced engine control algorithms including early fuel cut-off during deceleration, optimized transmission shift controls and by smoothly stopping the engine at idle. The system also features regenerative braking to capture electrical energy during braking, electric power assist during acceleration, low-rolling resistance tires and improved aerodynamics.

Several displays provide the driver with information regarding the Vue's hybrid system operation, including:

  • Charge/assist gauge - Indicates when the hybrid system is providing propulsion assist or when the hybrid battery is being re-charged.
  • Eco light - Illuminates when the vehicle is meeting or exceeding the federal government's fuel economy rating.
  • Auto stop position on tachometer - Indicates when the engine shuts off at idle.
  • Driver information center - provides instantaneous and average fuel economy information, in addition to other important vehicle data.

In addition to the hybrid system, standard features on the Vue Green Line include 17-inch polished alloy wheels, rear spoiler, painted fascias and single-zone automatic climate control.

All Vues, including the 2008 Green Line, feature a comprehensive array of standard safety equipment that includes six air bags, active front head restraints, a pedal release system for the accelerator and brake, StabiliTrak electronic stability control with trailer sway control, antilock brakes, tire pressure monitors and OnStar.

Quiet, responsive ride and handling comes from front and rear stabilizer bars, MacPherson strut independent front suspension and independent multi-link rear suspension, along with a double-isolated engine cradle.

The non-hybrid 4-cylinder 2008 Vue XE has a suggested retail price of $21,450 and a fuel economy rating of 19 city/26 highway.

In 2008, Saturn will introduce a 2-mode hybrid Vue, which will increase fuel economy by an estimated 45 percent over the comparable non-hybrid model. Saturn also has committed to producing a plug-in hybrid Vue that will get approximately twice the fuel economy of any SUV currently on the market.

Saturn, a division of General Motors Corp., markets vehicles in the U.S. and Canada through a network of about 450 retailer facilities, with a focus on providing innovative products with solid value and excellent customer service. In 2006, the brand began a major revitalization of its portfolio with four new vehicles: the Sky roadster, the Aura midsize sedan, the Vue Green Line hybrid and the Outlook crossover. The aggressive pace continued this year with the launch of an all-new Vue compact crossover and the new Astra small car (Fall 2007).

Honda - 14 - One to the Power of Four

The solar-hybrid powered Honda 14 is an energy efficient, fully robotic commuting solution. A suburban community re-population movement in the 2050’s has increased consumer demand for a truly flexible commuter vehicle.

The solar-hybrid Honda 14 solves the carpooling dilemma because it allows carpoolers to take advantage of HOV lanes, share commuting costs and once near the passengers’ final destinations, robotically transforms from one to four separate and unique modes of transportation.

Through a combination of gyros, artificial intelligence and molecular engineering, each individual vehicle instinctively reconfigures as a fully functional vehicle. When traveling as one, the division points are undetectable. The latest advancements in molecular engineering allow the body panels to divide and reshape to form each individual vehicle.

EU Probes Ford’s Romanian Plant In Craiova

Thursday, October 11, 2007 | 0 comments » Categories | , | Bookmark and Share

In a turn of events, the European Commission has launched a formal investigation under EC Treaty state aid rules into possible aid granted in the context of the privatization of the Romanian “Automobile Craiova” plant (former Daewoo Romania) and its sale to Ford in September 2007 (see here). The EU said it was investigating whether conditions attached to the privatization, including a write-off of debts of Automobile Craiova and a guarantee concerning the payment of debts towards other former Daewoo subsidiaries resulted in a lower sales price than if the privatization had been unconditional. -Continued after the jump

EU Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said: "The Commission fully supports Romania in its privatisation policy. However, we have to ensure an open and transparent privatisation process free of unlawful state aid. In this particular case, I have concerns that the state aid rules might have been breached."

Ford of Europe CEO John Fleming said in a statement, “We accept fully the EU Commission's right to open a formal investigation into the privatization process. We will cooperate fully with the Commission to help bring this investigation to a satisfactory conclusion as quickly as possible.”

European Commission Press Release

State aid: Commission opens in-depth investigation into possible aid in privatisation of Romanian car producer Automobile Craiova

The European Commission has opened a formal investigation under EC Treaty state aid rules into possible aid granted in the context of the privatisation of Automobile Craiova (former Daewoo Romania) and its sale to Ford Motor Company in September 2007. The Commission has also required Romania to suspend the granting of any unlawful aid until the Commission takes a decision on its compatibility. The Romanian authorities attached specific conditions to the privatisation, in particular the achievement of a minimum production level of 200 000 cars in the fourth year after the privatisation, the continuation of the current activity for four years and the maintenance of all former employees of Automobile Craiova and Daewoo Romania. The Commission has to verify whether these conditions resulted in a lower sales price than if the privatisation had been unconditional. If this is the case, the privatisation could involve elements of state aid. In addition, Romania seems to have changed the terms of the privatisation at a later stage of the process, which might have involved additional aid elements. The opening of an investigation gives interested parties the possibility to comment on the measures under examination. It does not prejudge the outcome of the procedure.

EU Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said: "The Commission fully supports Romania in its privatisation policy. However, we have to ensure an open and transparent privatisation process free of unlawful state aid. In this particular case, I have concerns that the state aid rules might have been breached."

Daewoo Automobile Romania was created in 1994. In 2000, the parent company Daewoo went bankrupt and most subsidiaries were sold. However, no investor could be found for Daewoo Romania because of its critical debt situation. Daewoo Romania was therefore taken over in 2006 by the Romanian State and renamed Automobile Craiova. The company is currently not producing any vehicles but is active only in the trade of spare parts.

A further attempt to sell the company was launched earlier this year. Following a public tender, Ford Motor Company was the only company to submit a binding offer and thus won the tender. The technical and financial negotiations started in July 2007 and the sale-purchase agreement was signed on 12 September 2007.

The Romanian privatisation agency AVAS attached specific conditions to the privatisation contract. In particular, the successful bidder had to ensure the achievement of a minimum production level of 200 000 cars in the fourth year after privatisation, to continue the current activity for four years and to maintain the 3900 former employees of Automobile Craiova and Daewoo Romania.

Furthermore, it was reported that the Romanian government passed a special law for the privatisation of Automobile Craiova. Allegedly, the law provides for a write-off of the debts of the car producer and a guarantee concerning the payment of debts towards the other former Daewoo subsidiaries. Such debt write-off was not offered to the other potential bidders in the tender procedure.

The Commission has concerns that the privatisation of Automobile Craiova through a conditional tender might have resulted in a lower sales price and could therefore involve state aid. The conditions would ensure the maintenance of a certain production level and the aid could therefore support Automobile Craiova. This advantage would be financed by the revenue that the State had foregone through the sale. Furthermore, if the new investor were to benefit from a debt write-off by the state, whereas the debt situation of Automobile Craiova allegedly deterred a number of potential investors from submitting a bid, the investor would have received state aid as well.

GM-Onstar ANT: 2007 LA Show Design Challenge

Thursday, October 11, 2007 | 0 comments » Categories | , | Bookmark and Share

As with the other propositions for this year’s “Design LA” contest that we showed you earlier today, we won’t pretend that we completely understand the details behind GM’s Onstar Ant concept. From what we managed to absorb from GM’s press release, the pyramid-shaped device opens up like a flower and it can be configured on any vehicle providing environmentally friendly mobility. Well, at least that’s what we think it is. We’ll let you read the press release after the jump and decide for yourself. -Continued

GM-Onstar ANT

Much like the self-regulating traffic system found in nature’s best commuter, the ant, OnStar enabled vehicle-to-vehicle communication and ubiquitously embedded intelligence allow GM’s ANT to act independently yet communicate with other vehicles to optimize traffic flow. Quantum computing power also allows each ANT to virtually recreate a highly personalized space for any occasion or personal need.

Omni-directional propulsion, provided by three independent Nanorb wheel systems, operate as independent robots and can arrange themselves in different configurations, turning virtually anything into a mobile device. Layered, environmentally friendly, single-walled, carbon-polymer nanocomposites form the flat surface panels, which incorporate the carbon nanotube battery.

All body panels are connected with electro-active polymer actuators (a.k.a. artificial muscles), allowing the easy and silent reconfiguration of body panels, depending on their optimal street use.

2009 BMW M5 To Get Twin-Turbo V10?

Thursday, October 11, 2007 | 4 comments » Categories | , | Bookmark and Share

Have the German carmakers gone completely power-nuts? They sure have and nothing seems to be stopping them. New reports are stating that BMW has decided to pick up Audi’s (RS6) glove and introduce the 2009 M5 with a twin-turbocharged version of the current 507 Hp 5.0-liter V10 engine that could easily surpass the RS6’s 580Hp.

MSN-Cars website supports that it may very well have proof of this through a series of spy pics featuring a faintly camouflaged BMW M5. And while one can’t be 100 percent sure of what we’re seeing in the spy pics, we can only think of one good reason other than that BMW is trying out its forthcoming DSG transmission, and that is a revised engine.

Continuing our talk on hot El-Camino’s here’s another sport ute that will eminently spice up your libido… The Ford Mustang El-Camino or simply Mustangmino, combines the front-end of a 1966 Mustang with the rear-half of a shortened Chevy S-10 pick-up box. The bastardized “Mustangmino” is up for sale on eBay but before you attempt to sharpen your “French”, note that the seller supports that the rear-half of the Mustang was completely destroyed when he acquired the classic coupe. Whatever the reason or the cause, this is one ugly piece of "merde". -Continued after the jump

eBay Description

For Sale - 1966 Mustang one-of-a-kind pickup truck - The front half (cab) is a 1966 mustang and the rear half is a tubular steel frame with a shorten S-10 box with a customize tail gate. The vehicle was originally made because no one makes a pickup truck which is less than 16 feet long and that is the length of my side of the garage. I know it is sacrilegious to do this to a Mustang, however the rear half of this one was already gone when I got it.

It was built with the original 108 inch wheel base, the rear of the cab had a tubular roll cage welded in for support and was than enclosed with sheet metal. The rear frame is 1 1/2 x 3 inch tubular steel built in a ladder style construction and in bolted and welded to the side rocker panels, and tied into the roll cage and is also connected to the front frame rails extension with frame connectors. I actually hauled 2 tons of scrap steel to the junk yard in the box of this vehicle so I know it is strong enough.

The rear window is from a Toyota pickup. The front end has the heavy duty GT suspension and was lowered 1 inch like the 65 Shelby's for better handling and front disc brakes. VW’s Californian Design Center has come up with a two-wheeled teardrop shaped vehicle for this year’s “Design Los Angeles” (see here). According to VW’s design team, the Slipstream travels in an upright orientation occupying one fifth the size of a traditional vehicle when it’s used in the city. When on a special freeway lane called the “Slipstream,” the VW’s pod tilts to a horizontal orientation thus optimizing its aerodynamic shape. Rear fins slide out to allow the rear of the vehicle to float like the tail section of an airplane to achieve speeds in excess of 250 mph. The Slipstream is powered by the energy stored in the hyper-efficient solar panels that cover the vehicle. If only it were so simple in real life... -More pictures after the jump

Apart from your “everyday” production vehicles and concept car premieres, the LA Show also hosts one of the craziest design contests in the world, the “Design Los Angeles”. Entering its fourth year, the Design Los Angeles provides designers and carmakers unlimited freedom to create the most radical and wackiest propositions you’ll ever see on paper. This year’s contest is themed “2057 Robocars”. We’ll be showing the entries throughout the day but we though we’d start off with one of the weirdest designs we’ve seen, the Mazda Motonari RX. Named after a legendary Japanese warrior Mori Motonari, Mazda’s proposition looks like the love child between a Decepticon and Ripley’s Alien monster. -Press release and images after the jump

Mazda Motonari RX

The Motonari RX, named after legendary Japanese warrior Mori Motonari, non-invasively integrates the driver with the vehicle making each indistinguishable from the other. A driving suit serves as the primary interface between the occupant and the vehicle, which contains millions of microscopic actuators functioning as a haptic envelope. This allows the driver to experience the road psycho-somatically, receiving electrical stimulation to specific muscle groups.

The entire structure of the vehicle is comprised of a 100 percent re-prototypable, carbon nano-tube/shape memory alloy weave with a photovoltaic coating. This enables programmable tensiometry and fluid movement while insuring efficient energy transfer to the in-wheel electro-static nanomotors.

The four omni-wheels allow 360 degree movement. Acceleration and direction is determined by two armrest mounted control points. Occupant positioning controls the effectiveness of cornering and is comparable to street luge maneuvering in appearance.

Volvo is developing a new Flexfuel version of the C30 hatch in order to compete in the STCC (Swedish Touring Car Championship). The C30 E85 FIA SUPER 2000 will replace Volvo’s current racing car, the S60. "The decision to leave this year's racing car, a Volvo S60, was fairly simple. The Volvo C30 is a somewhat smaller and more agile car with excellent driving characteristics, even in the standard version," says Derek Crabb , head of Powertrain and Engine at Volvo and the man recently appointed to lead Volvo's Racing department.

Development of the new racing car will be done jointly by Volvo Cars and Polestar Racing, who has been handling the Swedish carmaker’s STCC vehicles the past few years. According to initial specs, the C30 E85 FIA SUPER 2000 will be equipped with a 2.0-liter 5-cylinder unit that runs on bioethanol (E85) delivering around 280 Hp. -Continued after the jump

Here’s a brand-new online ad for the just released 2008 BMW M3 E90 Sedan (see images here and promo video here). Four pilots take the new M3 Sedan for a straight-line acceleration test. Once completed, the coordinator kindly asks the pilots to abort the car but… -well, let’s not spoil the surprise. One of the funniest commercials BMW has made in a while.

Ford Australia’s sport division, FPV (Ford Performance Vehicles) unveiled the first non-Falcon vehicle (though it is based on the Falcon platform) in its range, the F6 X, at the 2007 Sydney Motorshow. Derived from Ford's Territory vehicle family, the FPV F6 X is powered by a turbocharged 4.0-litre in-line six-cylinder engine, producing 362 Hp of power and 550 Nm – 406 lbs/ft of torque, matched to a 6-speed automatic transmission and a full-time All-Wheel-Drive system. -Continued after the jump

FPV engineers re-tuned the suspension of the Territory to produce a firmer sports feel while braking performance has been enhanced by the fitment of Brembo six-piston front calipers and a new FPV calibration for the ABS and DSC systems

Cosmetically, the F6 X exterior styling cues include a front mesh grille insert, rear spoiler and alloy running boards with a matching body color surround, metal accents on the front skid plate, bonnet air scoop, door mirror scalps and rear skid plate along with 18-inch five-spoke alloys in Alpine Silver finish.

Inside the F6 X gets a two-tone leather seat trim while the instrument cluster features the FPV logo, an engine speed red line and distinctive FPV blue illumination. FPV scuff plates and alloy pedals along with a build plate mounted on the gear selector surround complete the list of interior appointments.

According to Ford Australia, the new FPV F6 X is due to go on sale in early 2008 with pricing to be released closer to launch.
