In the automotive industry, the design process is one of the most elaborate and expensive stages in a car’s development process as it requires several prototyping cycles -with each cycle calling for different design propositions. And just because the STi isn’t a new car -in the sense that it was based on the existing WRX Impreza, don’t think that it didn’t go through various design phases.

We’ve included a series of images showing the 2008 STi’s development stages from rough sketches to clay models and onto the final prototypes. Check them all out right after the jump and tell us your opinion. Who knows, maybe you’ll like one of the prototypes more than the actual production version which you can see by clicking here. -Continued

Isn’t it a darn shame that BMW decided not to equip the Tokyo Show 1-Series Coupe Tii Concept with a powertrain? Car shows are all about pipe dreaming; tell a lie and say that it’s fitted with a prototype twin-turbocharged, 250Hp 4cylinder engine. What’s the good in just saying that it features lightweight materials, optimised aerodynamics and a race-inspired interior if you know that the car is an empty dummy? For details and high-res images of the 1-Series Coupe Tii click here.

Now, see what we missed out on by not going at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show? Our Jalopnik pal Mike was quite delighted (and why shouldn’t he be) when he discovered that the press-room coffee-drink cans at the Tokyo show were in fact collectibles as each one featured a classic Japanese car. In all, there were six different coffee cans: 1969 Nissan Fairlady Z432 (Datsun 240Z), 1967 Toyota 2000GT, 1970 Suzuki Jimny, 1969 Mitsubishi Delica Coach-Deluxe, 1970 Subaru R-2SS and 1978 Mazda RX-7. Now if only the Detroit boyz could do the same thing with beer cans at the 2008 NAIAS...

2009 BMW 7-Series Scooped By Reader

Thursday, October 25, 2007 | 1 comments » Categories | , | Bookmark and Share

There seems to be some sort of bonding between Carscoop readers and the BMW 7-Series as for the second time in a month, one of our readers managed to snap a prototype version forthcoming bimmer. Csarno, who sent us this image, said that his friends spotted the camouflaged BMW 7-Series during a recent trip in Europe. Even though the spy shot doesn’t reveal much of the new 7er it is apparent from the rear-quarter design that BMW will seriously tone down the styling of the car compared to the current model. According to Carscoop sources, the new Seven will go on sale in Europe in late 2008 with the U.S. following in early 2009.

German carmaker Volkswagen has began replacing its 1.6-litre FSI petrol engine (115 Hp & 114 lbs-ft of torque) with the new 1.4-litre TSI unit (122 Hp & 155 lbs-ft of torque) across the Golf, Golf Plus, Golf Variant, Jetta, Eos and Passat and Passat Variant models. The 122 Hp engine is based on the 140 & 170 Hp 1.4-litre TSI units but instead of combining a supercharger and a turbocharger the new unit uses simply a turbocharger. -Continued after the jump

The 122 Hp 1.4 TSI unit (already available in Audi A3 and Seat Leon models), can be combined with a choice of six-speed manual or the all-new seven-speed DSG twin-clutch gearbox. According to VW, the new engine not only produces more power and torque than the 1.6 FSI unit, but it also offers reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

In the UK, VW announced today that all 1.6 FSI powered models will be replaced with the 1.4 TSI unit that will carry a retail premium of around £150 ($307 or €215) over the current 1.6-litre FSI. In the Passat Saloon and Estate models the premium rises to £175 ($359 or €251) for, where the moderate price rise includes the addition of an autohold function for the parking brake which was previously a £50 option.

Nissan To Launch GT-R V-spec Model In 2009

Thursday, October 25, 2007 | 4 comments » Categories | , | Bookmark and Share

And you thought we’d heard the last piece of news regarding the 2008 Nissan GT-R with the release of the media kit –well, at least for the duration of the Tokyo Show. The boyz at Insideline are reporting that an unnamed Nissan source has confirmed that a lightweight, more powerful version of the high-performance GT-R Coupe called “V-Spec” will hit U.S. showrooms in mid-2009 (about a year after the N. American market launch of the GT-R).

We remind that the GT-R’s right-hand-drive-only predecessors, the Skyline GT-R R32, R33 & R34 models (R34 V-Spec II pictured on the right) were also offered in V-spec trim featuring sportier suspension settings, lower ground clearance, carbon-fibre diffusers and spoilers along with mechanical upgrades.

The 2007 SEMA Show (Specialty Equipment Market Association) on October 30 will host the U.S. premiere of the 2008 Elantra Touring in the form of the “Beach Cruising” concept, which has been customized by K-Daddyz-Kustomz. As we informed you back in August when Hyundai first announced the Touring (click here), the newest addition in the Elantra’s line-up is what Europeans know as the i30 Crossover or simply put, the station-wagon version of the Kia Cee’d based i30.

Among other things, the custom concept features a purple and orange two-tone paintjob, 20-inch alloy rims and a chromed grille with interlocking Hyundai logos. Inside, things get really ugly, as the Californian based tuner has complemented the two-tone brown leather surfaces with purple and orange colored accents. -Press release and image gallery after the jump

PRESS RELEASE: HYUNDAI ELANTRA TOURING "BEACH CRUISER" CONCEPT TO BOW AT SEMA SHOW

LAS VEGAS, Nev., October 25, 2007 – Hyundai Motor America will show a colourful glimpse of the future when it takes the wraps off the Elantra Touring "Beach Cruiser" Concept at the 2007 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) on October 30. The custom concept is derived from the all-new five-door Elantra Touring, which arrives in the U.S. in 2008, taking advantage of the strong resurgence in compact hatchbacks. The Elantra Touring Beach Cruiser Concept was customized by K-Daddyz Kustomz of Bakersfield, Calif., to capture this future model's high-functioning and fun-to-drive character.

K-Daddyz Kustoms Elantra Touring "Beach Cruiser" Concept

K-Daddyz Kustomz is partnering with Hyundai for their fifth consecutive world premiere at SEMA. Kyle "K-Daddy" Gann took a prototype Elantra Touring five-door compact and created the ultimate Southern California "Beach Cruiser."

A two-tone "Amazing Grape and Tango Orange" paint scheme with Hyundai's "Flying H" tribal graphics highlights the flowing curves of the concept, while a green Polynesian Tiki idol graces the hood. True to the cruising culture, the vehicle features a front-to-rear panoramic sunroof. K-Daddyz' team also crafted a full line of interior and exterior billet accessories along with a custom race exhaust and ground effects kit. This approach is highlighted by a custom front grille with interlocking "Flying H" logos.

Performance enhancements include a prototype cold intake system, strut tower brace and painted motor cover and accessories. Twenty-inch Konig Rolf Blix 3 wheels matched with low profile Dunlap Sport Maxx tires complete the "Beach Cruiser's" aggressive and sporty look.

The purple and orange paint scheme is carried through to the interior and is complemented by two-tone brown leather surfaces and matching interior accents. No cruising car would be complete without state-of-the-art audio and video capabilities, and K-Daddy delivers with four rear-seat video screens, eight speakers, five amplifiers and eight Infinity subwoofers. In signature attention-to-detail fashion, K-Daddy created billet speaker grilles to match the exterior "Flying H" grilles, fabricated by Ryno Manufacturing. Gann also covered the five amplifiers in the trunk with an orange fiberglass "Flying H," which is hand-painted with a purple outline.

PRESS RELEASE: HARDCORE NEW IMPREZA WRX STI REVEALS ALL

  • Totally new five-door WRC look-alike body with large blistered wheelarches
  • Smoother ride and increased grip from new multi-link rear suspension
  • Plush new interior features leather/Alcantara as standard
  • Three different engine-response modes from Si-Drive
  • Thoroughly revised 2.5 litre turbo ‘boxer’ engine now with 300 PS
  • Upgraded symmetrical all-wheel drive system offers even more driver-selected handling characteristics
  • Unveiled on 24 October at Tokyo Motor Show, on sale in UK next spring

Subaru has at last revealed details of its hardcore new Impreza WRX STI which is substantially different to the non-turbo five-door models now being delivered to first customers.

Developed by a dedicated team of performance-loving engineers, the stunning new WRX STI debuts at the Tokyo Motor Show on 24 October, with first UK deliveries due next spring.

And with a heavily-revised new 300 PS turbocharged 2.5 litre ‘boxer’ engine, totally new platform and suspension plus even more advanced symmetrical all-wheel drive system, the World Rally Championship look-alike is sure to satisfy Subaru traditionalists.

Its proportions are radically altered compared to both the previous Impreza and mainstream new 1.5 and 2.0 litre models.

For example, the wheelbase is 95 mm longer than the old car despite overall length being 50 mm shorter. This reduces front and rear overhangs and enhances stability.

And at 1,795 mm wide, the new STI is even 55 mm wider than the new model thanks to heavily blistered wheelarches, while front and rear tracks are 45 and 40 mm greater for a ground-hugging stance.

Apart from the extended front and rear wings, key visual differences include a mesh front grille and a new, deep bumper design with sporty vertical air vents at either side to help cool the intercooler.

Immediately behind each front wheel is a vertical air outlet for the intercooler, topped by an ‘STI’ moulding plate.

Specially-designed side skirts neatly blend into the extended wheelarches, while an oversized roof spoiler with high-mounted stop lamp further distances the WRX STI from the mainstream Impreza. In addition, an integrated rear bumper diffuser reduces high-speed lift.

At the rear, four exhaust pipes twinned in pairs at either side of the body not only give a distinctive look but reduce exhaust air-flow resistance by 38 per cent, increasing power and reducing noise.

Colour choices will include Subaru’s signature ‘WR Blue’ and while gold-coloured alloy wheels are available, other designs include high-lustre silver alloys measuring 18x8.5ins with 245/40R tyres.

Comfort With Agility

The new Impreza WRX STI boasts a much plusher interior than before, offering leather/Alcantara-covered sports seats as standard with Recaro seats as an option. Curtain airbags are standard and the audio system has been upgraded.

Continuing on the comfort theme, the totally new suspension combines outstanding road-holding and driver involvement with a much smoother ride for passengers thanks to the multi-link double-wishbone rear suspension.

Like the previous Impreza WRX STI, the new car has inverted front suspension struts which provide a more rigid mounting and less camber-change during hard cornering. Aluminium front suspension lower arms reduce unsprung weight.

And for an even lower centre-of-gravity for enhanced grip, the front of the engine is 22 mm lower than before with the differential centre down by 10 mm.

The braking system has been developed in conjunction with Italian specialist, Brembo, and features four-pot callipers at the front and twin-pot at the rear – both ventilated discs. The system also includes four-channel, four-sensor Anti-Lock with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution.

A multi-mode Vehicle Dynamics Control System allows the driver to select the best setting for the prevalent road conditions. For example, it can be turned off altogether or set to ‘Traction’ which delays artificial interference.

More Power, More Driver Involvement

The award-winning 2.5 litre horizontally-opposed ‘boxer’ engine benefits from a thorough revision which includes a larger and more efficient intercooler which increases power.

The new STI also boasts stronger low to mid-speed torque thanks to variable-valve timing for the intake and exhaust system and a fast-warm catalytic converter for reduced emissions.

Power is now 300 PS at 6,000 rpm with torque of 300 lb ft at 4,000 rpm – increases of 19 PS and 11 lb ft respectively.

Also new is Subaru’s Si-Drive system as fitted to the Legacy 3.0R spec.B. This gives the driver three different engine-response programmes at the turn of a switch, ‘Super-Sharp’ Mode giving the ultimate in throttle response.

The much-praised six-speed manual transmission has been revised, with a shorter-throw gear-change and lighter movements, especially from neutral to 1st and 1st to 2nd gear thanks to a revised synchromesh.

As before, the symmetrical all-wheel drive system features a centre viscous-coupling plus front and rear limited-slip-differentials. This shares grip front to rear and side-to-side, constantly adjusting for maximum road-holding.

A firm favourite with existing STI owners, the Driver’s Control Centre Differential has been improved, giving even more choice of handling characteristics.

The DCCD is operated via a switch in the centre console, allowing the driver to manually select the torque distribution front to rear, reverting to automatic mode every time the ignition is switched off.

For example, he or she can choose between having a sharper cornering turn-in or more stable straight-line running.

In Manual Mode, the driver can adjust the front to rear torque distribution through varying degrees to suit different road conditions such as loose gravel or soft snow.

Now, for the new Impreza WRX STI, the DCCD switch also allows the selection of three different types of ‘Auto’ Mode.

1: Auto Mode is selected when the engine is started and covers most road conditions.
2: Auto+ Mode places the emphasis on traction for slippery roads, sharing out the torque more evenly between all four wheels and enhancing straight-line stability.
3: Auto- Mode increases agility by enhancing steering response through less torque-split interference.

Lawrence Good, Subaru (UK) Limited Managing Director, said: “The new WRX STI will be the perfect addition to a new range of Imprezas which are appealing to a wider, more mainstream audience.

“With its improved ride, refinement, interior space and practicality coupled with even more power and driver involvement, not to mention the kind of road presence Imprezas are renowned for, we are convinced our loyal fans will not be disappointed.”

NOTE: Full technical details will be released later.

Honda has confirmed plans to build a production version of the CR-Z prototype that made its worldwide debut today (Oct. 24, 2007) at the 40th Tokyo Show. Dubbed as the successor of the highly popular CR-X compact sports coupe, the CR-Z (which stands for Compact Renaissance – Zero) is powered by the latest iteration of Honda’s hybrid IMA powertrain which promises to deliver low emissions and fuel consumption figures.

According to Honda’s own words, the road-going version of the CR-Z “will be a compact, lightweight sportscar powered by a hybrid powertrain”. Though the Japanese carmaker was hesitant to announce launch timings for the production version, our sources state that the CR-Z will be introduced sometime between late-2009 and mid-2010. While we might not be exactly crazy for the CR-Z’s appearance, the fact that it will be equipped with a hybrid powertrain has definitely sweetened it up. Follow the jump to check out our CR-Z Tokyo Show image gallery along with a few comments made by Honda UK’s Enviroment Manager, John Kingston. -Continued

“Hybrids have always been seen as niche products, and hybrid car design has mostly been based around practicality and versatility,” said John Kingston, Environment Manager at Honda (UK). “The CR-Z Concept looks stunning, and shows that green cars can be sexy and exciting – but also minimise environmental impact”

“The fact that we will be producing cars like this – and the global hybrid – proves that hybrid cars are becoming key volume products within our range. All of this means that Honda will be selling over 1/4 million hybrids a year by 2009.”

Audi’s is going… “small in Japan” at this year’s Tokyo Show with the concept version of the 2009 A1 mini. Though we posted the full image gallery along with the initial facts (click here) about a week ago, we didn’t have the official press release in our hands up until today. The concept version of Audi’s forthcoming answer to the BMW Group’s MINI hatch is equipped with a hybrid system that consists of a 1,4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine that delivers 150 Hp and an electric motor mounted behind the rear seats powering the rear wheels which delivers an extra 40 Hp.

According to Audi, the A1 can accelerate (when using both engines) from standstill to 100 km/h – 62 mph in 7,8 sec while it reaches a top speed of 124 mph – 200 km/h. The German carmaker supports that the with slightly judicious accelerator control, a combined economy figure of 48 mpg (57.6 UK mpg or 4.9-l t/ 100 km) is possible, coupled with modest C02 output of 112g/km. -Press release and pics after the jump

  • Interior features innovative Audi mobile hand-held device offering mobile telephony, MP3 and video playback and GPS navigation Driver can also input sat-nav destinations and control in-car functions such as heating before leaving home

Audi pays homage to Japan’s flair for miniaturisation this week with its new sub-compact metroproject quattro design study, which makes its debut on Press Day at the Tokyo Motor Show (October 24 – November 11, 2007). Condensing the premium quality, innovation and design progressiveness for which the Audi range is renowned into less than 4 metres of road space, the metroproject quattro could provide clues to the look and packaging of a future Audi sub-compact production car.

Power for the Vorsprung durch Technik study is provided by a modified version of the 1.4-litre Turbo FSI petrol engine recently adopted by the A3, combined with a lithium-ion battery-powered electric motor mounted behind the rear seats which reduces fuel consumption and emissions by around 15 per cent. The petrol engine’s increased 150PS output, up from 125PS in the A3, is delivered at 5,500rpm, and its 40Nm higher torque output of 240Nm peaks from just 1,600rpm. The electric motor adds 41PS and an extra 200Nm of torque, and when engine and motor work in unison the metroproject quattro is able to accelerate from rest to 62mph in 7.8 seconds.

Delivered via the widely acclaimed S tronic dual-clutch transmission, the impressive performance can, in the right conditions, culminate in a top speed of 124mph. With slightly more judicious accelerator control, a combined economy figure of 57.6mpg is possible, coupled with modest C02 output of 112g/km.

The metroproject quattro is able to derive its power solely from its petrol engine, purely from its electric motor or through a combination of the two, their interplay controlled by the highly intelligent on-board management system.

If the driver opts for electric operation alone - a particular advantage for urban driving and shorter distances – the metroproject quattro is able to cover up to 62 miles at speeds of up to 62mph, silently and completely cleanly, before its lithium-ion batteries need to be ‘refuelled’ by a power socket. Energy released during braking is transformed back into electrical energy rather than being released as heat and wasted, helping to conserve resources even more effectively.

While only the petrol engine is running, the metroproject quattro sends drive through its front wheels, and while powered by the electric motor on the back axle alone it is effectively rear-wheel-driven. When the two operate simultaneously, the compact Audi is able to offer all the advantages in composure and control that four-wheel-drive brings.

More enthusiastic driving, which would call the two power sources into play simultaneously, is enhanced by a sophisticated McPherson strut front and four-link rear suspension configuration, electromechanical speed-sensitive power steering with a low energy draw and Audi magnetic ride adaptive damping technology which has won plenty of praise already in the TT and R8 sports cars.

The Audi drive select system introduced recently in the all new A4 Saloon, which enables the driver to fine-tune suspension, steering and transmission characteristics to suit his or her preferences, also helps to bring out the very best in the driving experience.

The metroproject quattro’s transverse ‘east-west’ engine installation, short overhangs and similarity in height to the larger A3 hatchback mean that its interior belies its compact exterior dimensions. Its four individual seats offer impressive leg and head room, and the discreetly illuminated electric motor incorporated within the floor of the load compartment, and visible when the tailgate is opened, still permits the provision of 240 litres of luggage space.

Remote control for virtually every in-car feature
The highlight of the typically meticulously finished cabin is the new, removable hand-held Audi mobile device, which not only offers mobile telephony, GPS navigation and audio and video playback, but also serves as the control unit for numerous vehicle systems which can be set and adjusted from outside the car. The driver can, for example, enter destinations into the satellite navigation unit, program the audio system or switch on the heating from the comfort of an armchair at home before setting off.

Using the same operating principle as the Multi Media Interface (MMI) infotainment control system that is highly regarded in today’s production Audi models, the Audi mobile device not only brings optimum user friendliness, but also maximum space efficiency by integrating several communications devices that were previously only available separately into a single unit. The handheld, touch screen system, which is able to recognise both Latin and Japanese characters and even decipher handwriting, communicates with the car by way of a WLAN connection.

Shortly before the on-sale date of the new BMW 1 Series Coupe on 24 November, BMW designers have given an insight into what an out-and-out motorsport-focussed derivative might look like. The BMW Concept 1 Series tii will take centre stage at the Tokyo Motorshow and uses lightweight materials, optimised aerodynamics and a race-inspired interior to deliver an uncompromising focus on motorsport.

The BMW Concept 1 Series tii is the fifth concept car presented by BMW in 2007. It showcases innovative technologies but also reflects on the traditions of BMW's compact, lightweight and sporting Coupe's. The Concept's tii badging harks back to the BMW 2002tii from the 1960's and 70's - a car that set the mould for successful and dynamic two-door BMW models of recent times.

On first inspection, the most noticeable part of the car is its striking colour scheme. Alpine White body panels combine with a visible carbon-fibre bonnet, black and white front-to-rear decals and blue trims to give a dynamic appearance. But the BMW Concept 1 Series tii has sporting substance to back up its bold visual appearance.

The BMW 1 Series Coupe's roots are clear in the BMW Concept 1 Series tii but the concept car displays clear motorsport genes. From the front, the bumper and valence have been redesigned to deliver even more air to the engine and braking system. Air flow is also enhanced through BMW's trademark kidney grilles, with the usual vertical slats replaced by wire mesh. The bonnet is constructed of carbon fibre, as are the mirror caps and inserts in the front air intakes to reduce weight and lower the centre of gravity. The fins running along the carbon-fibre bonnet help the flow of air over the bonnet and are reminiscent of the legendary BMW 3.0 CSL from the 1970's.

From the side, the profile of the new BMW 1 Series Coupe's is retained, but the Concept 1 Series tii features extensively remodelled side sills and a uniquely-designed 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheel finished in dark chrome. From the rear, the aerodynamic enhancements continue with a carbon-fibre boot-mounted gurney-flap rear spoiler to deliver enhanced rear down force. Weight is further reduced with the rear bumper insert also made from lightweight carbon-fibre material.

The car's exterior colours and motorsport orientation continue inside the car. Supportive bucket seats give the highest levels of lateral support while the three-spoke sports steering wheel is covered in Alcantara with body-colour white inserts. The roof lining, door linings and instrument panel are also covered in Alcantara. Ahead of the steering wheel, the instrument binnacle also reflects the motorsport intentions of the car with a white rev-counter with red needles dominating the driver's view.

There is no current information available on the drivetrain of the BMW Concept 1 Series tii or any plans to develop it for series production.

FHI Introduces All-New Subaru Impreza WRX STI

Tokyo, October 24, 2007 – Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), the maker of Subaru automobiles, has announced the introduction of its all-new Subaru Impreza WRX STI in Japan. The new WRX STI went on sale nationwide through Subaru dealerships today.

Advancing FHI’s theme of producing the complete driver’s car and embodying the essence of total driving control, the third-generation Impreza WRX STI has debuted with complete makeovers in its design, engine, chassis and features. Benefiting from Subaru’s signature Symmetrical AWD and the Horizontally-Opposed Boxer engine, the new WRX STI is an innovative AWD sports model that delivers a combination of joy of driving and pride of ownership.

The new five-door model features not only a greatly refined engine and suspension but new mechanisms such as the multi-mode Driver’s Control Center Differential (DCCD) and multi-mode Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC). Also, the Subaru Dynamic Chassis Control Concept (Subaru DC3) has been further developed for the WRX STI in order to maximize performance and driving pleasure and to ensure high levels of driver satisfaction through total control of the vehicle.

The vehicle’s interior and exterior design expresses sophistication and refined functionality. The widened body flares give an irresistible presence, integrating function and beauty, while the interior design stresses high quality and a sporty image. In addition, the Impreza WRX STI features advancements in the areas of environment, safety, and comfort, all of which match FHI’s goal of delivering exceptional performance and enjoyable and dependable drivability with environmental considerations in all Subarus.

The first-generation WRX STI model was based on the first Impreza WRX and was developed by Subaru Tecnica International (STI), an FHI subsidiary specialized in motorsports activities. Since its introduction in 1994, the WRX STI has established a solid reputation as a high-performance sports model. In the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) that requires participants to compete with production-based models, Subaru WRX STI models have proven their credentials by bringing Subaru three consecutive Manufacturers’ championship titles from 1995 to 1997. In this context, FHI plans to submit a Group N homologation application effective as of January 1, 2008 for the new WRX STI to FIA.

The introduction of the new WRX STI has completed the full lineup of the Impreza series in Japan. The Impreza 15S, 20S and S-GT models have been available since June 2007, each offering individual strengths in performance and comfort.

Major Features

1. Design

[Exterior design]

Styled around the concept of “Pure Form for Driving”, the widened body flares accentuate the 5-door body taken from the new Impreza. A deep-set character line, running along the side from the front bumper to the rear end, and a pronounced edge shape reflects light and shadows and gives the car a different look depending on the time of day. While retaining a consistent flow from front to rear bumper, the front and back fenders are prominently projected, creating a distinctive identity and gives the WRX a unique road presence.

Aerodynamically improved body styling with a large rear spoiler optimizes the balance between the front and the rear quarter panels by reducing wind resistance. An aerodynamically curved form from the front bumper to the front fenders helps minimize lift forces and contributes to maintaining vehicle stability at high speeds. Engine compartment ventilation is provided on both sides of the front bumper and along the rear edges of the fenders.

The strong front grille employs a sharp wing shape with metallic mesh, suggesting the car’s inherent sportiness. The rear garnish is painted in the body color, enhancing the widened body shape. The rear edges of the front fenders are embellished with STI logo plated in cherry red.

The muffler comes with twin dual-tail pipes. Eye-catching 18-inch aluminum-cast wheels, distinguished by their five spokes and highlighted by dark-tone high-luster paint, are standard. These wheels enhance the vehicle’s bold and commanding presence while expressing high quality and streamlined beauty. BBS-brand cast wheels with spokes and sharp lines are also available as an option.

Seven exterior colors are available: Obsidian black pearl; pure white; spark sliver metallic; dark gray metallic; lightning red; midnight blue pearl (only for the WRX STI); WR blue mica.

[Interior design]

The interior is finished in black and silver to highlight its streamlined design, as well as to create an impression of elegance and sportiness. Dynamic designs with decorative insets in the center panels and door trim express roominess in the cabin. The vehicle information display, which constantly shows outside temperature, average mileage and time, as well as a navigation screen and audio display, are placed nearer the top of the dashboard for improved visibility and functionality.

The front bucket seats use a combination of Alcantara fabric and leather and are designed to offer easy access into and out of the vehicle and to hold the driver and passenger in comfortably and securely. Jointly developed by RECARO, custom bucket seats are also available as a manufacturer’s option. The RECARO seats offer fuller side support and excel in maintaining a comfortable position for sporty driving. Their height adjustment enables the further lowering of the hip point setting in the seats.

Power tilt and telescopic steering comes with a three-spoke genuine leather wheel embossed with the STI logo in its center. The instrument panel combines three meters, a tachometer between a speedometer and fuel gauge, in a single module illuminated in red. Each meter’s dial is colored cherry red, the STI brand color, emphasizing a quality feel and sportiness. When the ignition key is turned on, the needles of the three meters swing up to their maximums and quickly fall back to their original positions, imparting a boost of excitement for the driver. The meter module also comes with a REV Indicator, DCCD Torque Indicator, and Shift-up Indicator. In addition, red LED lights are used for interior door step lights, and they are also provided for the console tray. The center console is embellished with the STI logo, which illuminates when the car’s headlights are on.

2. Packaging

An extended wheelbase and widened track provide optimal dimensions for the new model to ensure its outstanding driving stability and straight-line maneuverability. (The wheelbase is wider by 85 mm, the front track is 40 mm wider, and the rear track is 45 mm wider, than the previous model.) The 5-door body style excels in balancing lift forces in the front and desirable downward forces in the rear, achieving optimal aerodynamic characteristics.

Shortening of the front and rear overhangs has reduced yaw moments of inertia, and enabled highly stable handling, while interior roominess has been preserved. The body structure has been enhanced for improved performance and upgraded specifications. However, the gross weight has remained nearly the same as in the previous model through streamlined body construction.

3. Powertrain

[2.0-litre turbo Boxer engine]

An electronically controlled throttle enables finely adjusted control of the 2.0-litre turbo Boxer engine and ensures acceleration that is linearly responsive to pedal movement. The Dual Active Valve Control System (Dual AVCS) hydraulically controls timing in both the intake and exhaust valves, which helps improve low-end torque while providing a strong power boost at high rotations. Dual AVCS also increases combustion efficiency, thereby reducing exhaust emissions. Changes made in the intake and exhaust ports promote smoother air in- and outflow, contribute to enhancing power output, and improve combustion efficiency, which reduces emissions and improves fuel mileage. In addition, changes in the shape of the turbocharger compressor have increased the efficiency of the air intake and enabled more responsive and smoother acceleration.

Also, the layout of the exhaust pipes greatly facilitate overall air outflow by canceling interference and increasing airflow between the exhaust port and the turbo charger to deliver optimal torque and engine response at various speeds.

A tumble generated valve (TGV) has been installed in the intake manifold, boosting combustion efficiency by controlling the intake flow. It improves efficiency particularly at the time of engine ignition. Also adopted is a secondary air system that forces air into the exhaust port to burn out any gasoline remaining in it. The system helps eliminate harmful substances when the powertrain is still cool, and it promotes early activation of a catalytic converter.

The muffler is placed horizontally, which lowers resistance in the exhaust flow, results in improved noise cancellation, and contributes to smooth power output.

[Transmission]

A 6-speed manual transmission, Subaru’s own development, has been further perfected for faster, more accurate and responsive shifts. Friction is substantially reduced through the adoption

4. Drivetrain

The front differential gear adopts a torque-sensitive LSD (limited slip differential) that excels in response to input torque; the rear differential employs the Torsen LSD that supports distribution of torque. The SI (SUBARU Intelligent)-Drive system offers three different modes of driving for the driver to enjoy: Intelligent; Sport; and Sport Sharp. For example, when a driver continues to heavily depress the accelerator pedal in the Intelligent mode, engine output is automatically boosted to the level of maximum torque.

The multi-mode Driver’s Control Center Differential (DCCD) enables the driver to choose from different modes of control for the center differential. This feature allows the driver to enjoy handling and maneuvering as he desires, and it provides high levels of vehicle straight-line stability unique to the AWD configuration. The multi-mode Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) also provides three different modes that the driver can choose from to experience a wider range of driving enjoyment, while always maintaining the safety features of VDC.

[Multi-mode DCCD]

AUTO mode: The standard mode automatically controls the differentials under all kinds of driving conditions.

AUTO [+] mode: This mode is suited for driving on slippery or icy roads, which requires higher levels of road traction, achieved by elevating differential control.

AUTO [-] mode: This mode enables agile driving whereby the vehicle responds swiftly to steering by the driver.

MANUAL mode: This mode allows the driver to control the center differential manually.

[Multi-mode VDC]

NORMAL mode: The standard mode controls ABS, TCS and VDC.

TRACTION mode: Adjusting both TCS and VDC, this mode extends the time period until the VDC kicks in. This mode is suited for sporty driving as it does not control torque-lowering in the engine.

OFF mode: This mode only controls ABS. It is used in emergencies like getting the vehicle out of deep snow or mud.

*Though the multi-mode VDC is the vehicle stability control device that offers a superior function, it is a driving assist system.

5. Chassis

The WRX STI boasts a state-of-the-art chassis design that reflects the Subaru DC3. Equipped with a strut-type front suspension and the newly designed double-wishbone rear suspension, and combined with its widened track, this model achieves outstanding cornering stability. Optimized suspension geometry settings with adjusted camber angles have made substantial improvements in road-hugging traction and riding comfort. Aluminum cast lower arms and a stabilizer bar in the front suspension help raise torsional and rolling rigidity, providing accurate response in steering. In the rear suspension, suspension links are attached to the body through the sub-frame, which enhances riding comfort and further lowers noise levels.

The Boxer engine is mounted lower on the chassis, further advancing vehicle stability already ensured by its low center of gravity: 22 mm lower at the front end of the engine, compared to the previous model.

The Brembo-made ventilated disk brake system employs an ultra-low expansion brake hose and tie rods for the brake booster. The brake system, coupled with the SuperSports ABS (antilock brake system) with EBD (electronic brake distribution), processes information fed from the G sensor, steering angle sensor, yaw rate sensor, and pressure sensor to deliver steady braking and control. It also works with the DCCD to ensure accurate braking on all four wheels independently, while minimizing deviations from the driver’s intended path. Bridgestone RE050A (245/40R18) tires are standard.

The hill-start assist function maintains the braking function one second after the brake pedal is released in case of starting a car on a hilly road.

6. Body construction

The WRX STI uses an advanced form of Subaru’s legendary and proprietary Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frame Body Structure, reinforcing each pillar with frames that circle around the body in a ring shape. Reinforcements are now provided to connect firmly between the lower part of the front pillar and upper frames, increasing the strength of the strut attachment onto the body frame. Reinforcements are also added to the upper part of the opening of the rear gate.

Through streamlined body construction and the extensive use of high-tensile steel, including 590 MPa–level steel for major body frames, the new model has achieved both high body rigidity and a weight reduction of 11 kg.

7. Safety

Advancing the Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frame Body Structure, the new WRX STI has realized high levels of safety and crash worthiness through effectively absorbing and dispersing crash impact in frontal, side, or rear impact crashes. The hood, for example, is specifically designed to disperse frontal impact. The new model boasts low-impact features for pedestrians and other vehicles in collisions.

All models are equipped with dual SRS airbags, side SRS airbags and curtain airbags, as well as 3-point seat belts in the rear seats. A collapsible brake pedal is available on all models to reduce the risk of foot injuries in accidents.

8. Environmental friendly features

The new model achieved an additional 50% reduction in emissions from the levels of the 2005 exhaust emission regulations set forth by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. This was accomplished primarily owing to reduced weight and performance improvements.

9. Utilities

The all-new double-wishbone rear suspension makes room for a wider and deeper luggage compartment, improving the utility of the car. The wide and flat load floor can accommodate two Tour-size golf bags or five carry-on bags. Larger door openings afford improved ingress and egress, and the rear doors open 75 degrees to allow for better rear seat access. The door pocket serves also as a beverage holder that can hold a 500-mL PET bottle. In addition, the center console box accommodates 8 CDs, while the console tray provides space for placing small items.

10. Others

Standard features on the WRX STI include retractable headlight washers; an anti-theft alarm system and immobilizer; a hood damper; and a keyless entry system with a push-bottom starter.

An HDD navigation system with audio capability (compatible with Subaru G-Book Alpha telematics service) is offered as a manufacturer’s option.

As anticipated, German carmaker Volkswagen presented the second iteration of the “up!” concept that was introduced at the Frankfurt Show in September (click here). The rear-engined “Space-up!” is basically a 4door version of the “up!” with an extended wheelbase (2.56 meter). Accordingly, at 3.68 meters the “Space-up!” is exactly 23 cm longer than its 2-door spouse while at 1.54 meter, the van also gains an extra four centimetres in height. Inside, the “Space-Up!” can seat four passengers with cargo space varying between 220 to 1,005 litres (depending on the positioning and use of the rear seats). As Volkswagen points out in its press release, the development of the production models of both the “up!” and “Space-up!” have already begun. -Press release and high-res image gallery after the jump

The space up! - Key Aspects

space up! – The biggest small Volkswagen since the Beetle

World premiere in Tokyo: space up! – The space wonder from Volkswagen

New Small Family: space up! – The second variant of a new world car

Wolfsburg, 24 October 2007

The “New Small Family” from Volkswagen is gaining speed on its journey to the future. Just six weeks after the world premiere of the up! – the two-door city specialist – Europe’s largest automobile producer is now introducing the second member of the “New Small Family” at the Tokyo Motor Show: The space up! concept car. “The world premiere of the up! at the IAA in Frankfurt served as an initial test to see how the concept of our New Small Family would be received in Europe. And the results of this test were more than favorable,” says Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Head of Technical Development. Volkswagen’s chief engineer continues: “The second member of this new family now follows in the space up!. The small van shows that we are consistently exploiting every millimeter of space and creating an emotional design.”

Walter de Silva, Chief Designer of the Volkswagen Group, underscores the assessment of the board member heading development: “In formal design terms, one can see that the space up! is fun and at the same time offers maximum space on the smallest of platforms. Our New Small Family brings a smile back to the road. An exceptionally amiable charisma unites the up! and the space up! now being presented in Tokyo. At the same time, it is apparent at first glance that despite all of the emotionality of this car we avoided superfluous gimmicks of any kind. This has created a very straight-lined and confident design.”

The space up! - Concept

The space up! is a small space wonder. On just 3.68 meters length and 1.63 meters width, it offers the space of a considerably larger vehicle. The clever space concept of the space up! is to a great extent attributable to its engine layout: The environmentally-friendly gasoline, diesel and electric powertrains of the future up! family are always located in the rear – just like on the Beetle and the Bulli (Microbus) of the past.

A brief comparison: The space up! is exactly 23 centimeters longer than the up! shown at the IAA in Frankfurt; accordingly, its wheelbase is also larger (2.56 meter). At 1.54 meter, the van exhibits a height gain of four cm.

In contrast to the two-door up!, the space up! has four doors. And in actuality there are even six. That is because the van concept car does not have a classic tailgate, but instead a two-part rear door. Hidden behind this door are 220 to 1,005 liters of cargo space, four seat positions that are multivariable in design, and an exceptionally innovative cockpit concept. Numerous functions are controlled via a touch-screen with 3D graphics and proximity sensors.

The space up! - Exterior design

Volkswagen is introducing the space up! as the second model variant of the “New Small Family”. The up! concept car presented at the IAA in Germany and the space up! now being shown in Japan are unified by a common design philosophy. The cars are characterized by a simple, clear language of forms. The designers consciously omitted any superfluous gimmicks. Like the up!, the space up! is characterized by a completely new harmony between technical layout, on the one hand, and emotional design on the other.

Front end: Distinguishing the front end of the “New Small Family” are the headlamps that take an inward diagonal line, between them the horizontally integrated air inlets (minimized aperture optimizes aerodynamics), the VW logo arranged on the front hood (as the only exterior detail kept in chrome) and the smooth-surfaced bumper with a lower segment. An important new aspect when it comes to the headlamp design of the space up!. Here they extend far into the fender, and this also affects the side profile.

Side profile: On its sides, the concept car – like the “Bulli” in earlier days – exhibits a long extended window section and a clearly distinctive, powerful C-pillar whose form is typical of Volkswagen. The A-pillar is positioned far forward. The space between the A and C pillars is spanned by the line of butterfly doors with opposing hinges. Both the front and rear doors are opened by door handles at the height of the B pillars. Since they open in opposition, in the style of the legendary Samba bus, and extend across nearly the entire space between the wheel housings – i.e. the entire sill length – all four seating positions are exceptionally convenient to access. A key concept here is wheel housings: Hidden under them are the self-confident and large 18-inch wheels with size 165/50 tires. Distinctive in this area are the short front and rear overhangs. The front overhang, from the axle hub to the outer skin of the bumper measures just 53 centimeters; in the rear it is 59 centimeters. The result: Crisp proportions.

Rear end: Also unmistakable are the design features of the rear end. Take the example of the rear door: It fills out practically the entire car area above the bumper. Similar to the smaller up!, the door – split 1/3 to 2/3 here – consists of a transparent material. Integrated beneath it are the taillights. Fully opened, the door offers a cargo width of 101 centimeters. The bumper itself was designed to match its counterpart at the front end.

Thanks to the wide track width of 1.42 meters the outer edges of the wheels are in line with the wheel housings. The effect is that the entire vehicle width of 1.63 meters seems to consist of axles plus tires and wheels. Meanwhile, the only details that boldly jump outside of the vehicle width are the round-shaped outside mirrors, like the ones on the up!

The space up! - Interior design

The space up! is a full-fledged four-seater. In the rear, a bench seat is implemented with two integrated child seats. To convert them from adult to child seats, the seating surfaces are simply folded over, and two shoulder supports are folded out on each side. Finished. But not only will children travel comfortably in a production version of the concept car. The reason: The cushions of the four seats – for driver, front and rear passengers – consist of an airflow foam that automatically adapts to individual anatomies. In addition, the seating position is pleasantly high, making it extremely comfortable.

With the exception of the driver’s seat, all seats can also be folded and removed. If the seats are “only” folded, this creates a level cargo area with a capacity of up to 1,005 liters. With four people on board, cargo capacity up to window level height is still 220 liters. Since the low-profile engine of the space up! is located in the rear, objects with a maximum length of 2.8 meters can be stowed in a pass-through to the front cargo space. Remember: The concept van is just 3.68 meters long and thereby 15 centimeters shorter than the Fox, which is the most compact Volkswagen today.

The space up! - Intuitive interface

Since the car’s cockpit was conceived as a module to be applied across all models of the “New Small Family”, the cockpit unit was copied from the up! concept car presented in Frankfurt, with slight modifications. It is a cockpit with a great future. In detail, the space up! has two central displays: In the cockpit, an 8-inch monitor displays information such as vehicle speed, fuel level and range as well as momentary CO2 emissions. In the middle of the instruments a 7-inch monitor shows how future human-machine interfaces might look and operate. Here all conceivable functions are controlled via a touchscreen that – using proximity sensors – reacts to gestures as well, i.e. specific hand movements.

Menuing was retooled and reorganized so that people without computer science educations would be able to operate the system. The developers intentionally separated “display” and “control” levels from one another. Always shown on the screen is a control bar with standard functions such as climate control or audio volume control. Developers packaged functions of other higher-order systems – navigation, telephone, radio, Internet, images, films, etc. – on a display level that has been referred to internally as the “main menu carousel” – a type of virtual carousel. It consists of the icons of different system functions (telephone, navigation, etc.). When the user touches the “main menu carousel” it can be rotated by touchscreen. Visually, this control is just as spectacular as it is intuitive. When the desired function appears on the main menu carousel – such as the telephone – the user just needs to move his or her hand to the display to switch to the telephone menu thanks to proximity sensor technology. It was true on the up! and it also applies to the space up!: The new type of user control is fun, easy to understand in any cultural environment and very safe. That is precisely what is typical of Volkswagen. Toward the end of this decade, the first Volkswagen customers might be able to enjoy this new generation of intuitive controls aboard the New Small Family. The development of production models has already begun…’

Power is transferred to all wheels via an all-new GR6-type dual clutch transmission, with paddle shifting and a Borg Warner six-plate dual clutch for direct control. -Check out the press release along with high-res photos after the jump

NISSAN ANNOUNCES NEW NISSAN GT-R

-New Dimensional Multi-Performance Supercar Available in Early December in Japan-

TOKYO (Oct. 24, 2007) - Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., today announced the launch of the Nissan GT-R, a new multi-dimensional performance machine that lives up to the concept of “an ultimate supercar enjoyable to anyone, anywhere, at anytime”. The 480PS twin-turbo GT-R features a newly developed Premium Midship package, including the world’s first independent transaxle 4WD developed independently by Nissan. GT-R will be available mainly through Nissan High Performance Centers nationwide in Japan on December 6th.

GT-R was developed with a new understanding and appreciation of the Earth’s natural forces – gravity, inertial force and aerodynamics – and translates those forces into a completely new design, maximizing tire grip and airflow.

Basic vehicle dynamics and integration with the driver have also been examined, resulting in new componentry and creating a Human-Machine Interface (HMI) never seen before in the marketplace. All of these theories have been integrated to balance “speed and efficiency,” “high-output with environmental mindfulness” and “high performance and safety.”

Taking these factors into account, Nissan created the all-new Nissan GT-R, which offers advanced high performance for secure and enjoyable driving free of climatic, road condition or driving technique limitations. GT-R offers ultimate performance for virtually every driving situation – whether it be the Nurburgring circuit, where GT-R holds a top-level vehicle lap record, to snow, rain or urban areas – all manageable by the GT-R driver through advanced technology and driving dynamics.

GT-R’s unique characteristics are instilled not just in the vehicle’s design, but also through a specialized production process. Carbon fiber, aluminum and steel components are assembled with a special high-precision process, which includes a series of vibration tests. Engines and transmissions are assembled in a “clean room” environment and upon completion, every GT-R undergoes a battery of comprehensive tests to ensure the proper operation of all vehicle components.

To properly support the all-new GT-R, Nissan has established special Nissan High Performance Centers in Japan, where all certified advisors and technicians have received extensive training. Total support for the GT-R owner is offered for the first three years of ownership, including measurement and adjustment of the engine, transmission and wheel alignment after the first 1000 km, and again every 12 months, free of charge.

Packaging and Driveline Suited for a Supercar

The all-new Nissan GT-R uses a Premium Midship package, an all-new platform which enables the use of the world’s first application of an independent transaxle 4WD system. The transaxle’s layout places the dual-clutch transmission, transfer case and final drive at the rear of the vehicle (instead of the usual front location), which enables vehicle weight to be evenly distributed throughout the car. This gives GT-R a superb front-to-rear weight balance, while enhancing leg and foot space and allowing for an optimal pedal layout.

Under the hood, GT-R features an all-new 3.8-litre twin turbo V6 “VR38” engine, featuring plasma-sprayed bores and a special twin-turbo exhaust manifold system. A secondary air management system enables the newly designed powerplant to provide approximately 40kg/m of torque during ordinary low-rev driving, which provides for an optimum air-fuel ratio for around-town efficiently and helps GT-R meet ultra-low emission vehicle (U-LEV) standards in Japan.

GT-R’s new engine produces 480PS (353kW) at 6400rpm and maximum torque of 60kg/m (588Nm) from 3200 to 5200rpm. Putting the power to the ground is an all-new GR6-type dual clutch transmission, with paddle shifting and a Borg Warner six-plate dual clutch for direct control.

Suspension duties are handled through a special Bilstein DampTronic system, which utilizes all pertinent vehicle information to provide appropriate damping forces for all situations and helps maintain a high level of control for straight-line driving, cornering, and braking.

Braking is essential for a daily-driven supercar and GT-R features large Brembo full-floating drilled rotors, low steel high stiffness brake pads and Brembo mono block six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers, which in combination minimize fade and provide stable braking. Run-flat tires, exclusively designed for use on GT-R, balance high grip and all-weather capabilities and a comfortable ride in all driving situations. The tires are designed to maintain their integrity for 80km of travel at 80 km/h and also provide a level of performance after a loss of pressure.

High-Performance Safety and Environmental Technologies

Standard safety equipment includes a pop-up engine hood, system for enhanced pedestrian safety, driver and front passenger SRS Air Bag System, front seat belts with tension reducer, front seat belts with load limiter, and three-point rear seat belts. Driver and front passenger SRS Side Air Bag System and SRS Curtain Air Bag System are also offered.

Environmental technologies include extensive work to create an U-LEV certification in Japan for the 3.8-liter twin turbo engine and reduced levels of volatile organic compound in the cockpit.

Functional Design – High Performance Aerodynamics and Style

GT-R’s styling follows the function over form theory. Every styling aspect, from the overall design to the smallest details, is created to maximize the vehicle’s driving experience – as well as suggesting GT-R’s “supercar” level of performance. Utilizing advanced aerodynamics, GT-R’s aggressive styling evokes the lines of a well-trained athlete, combining strong character lines with smooth and solid areas.

GT-R’s body is created with a combination of steel, carbon fiber and aluminum, providing a unique combination of stiffness and lightness. GT-R features a low coefficient of drag of 0.27 which enhances fuel efficiency, which is balanced with high levels of front and rear downforce, which provides GT-R with enhanced grip in all weather situations.

The front fenders express power and stability, while the “aero-blades” on the fenders’ leading edges provide optimum airflow around the tires and along the body. The scoop in the fenders’ trailing edges assist in providing front downforce and optimization of side airflow. The aggressive front end, with a large hood budge and single air intake, provides a sophisticated style as well as undisturbed airflow for power and cooling. New “super wide beam” headlights feature three additional sub-reflectors (compared to conventional lights) to give a wider spread to the illumination area.

GT-R’s large, four-passenger cabin features a sloping “aero blade canopy” roofline and curved C-pillar “sword edge,” which expresses the distinctive GT-R identity, as well as facilitating air flow around the rear of the vehicle. GT-R’s hallmark four-ring taillights, efficient rear spoiler and large, integrated φ120 exhaust tips, provides an appropriate rear view of GT-R, as well as optimizing airflow along the top and under the vehicle.

The high level of advanced technology is evident even in GT-R’s paint – which utilizes a “double clear coat” and “anti-chipping” process and is painstakingly hand-polished by craftsman. GT-R features Ultimate Silver as a special new color.

An Interior Suitable for Daily Driving or Supercar Duties

Key to GT-R’s usability as a both daily driver and a high-performance supercar is its interior, which is designed to balance functionality, safety and comfort.

Sculpted performance bucket seats give the driver and passenger a comfortable driving experience, and soft pads are utilized on the lower portion of the instrument panel and doors to give an extra level of comfort and safety.

The instrument panel surrounds the driver, with all meters and multi-function meter at a uniform height to minimize the driver’s head movement when traveling at high speeds. A large center-mounted tachometer, with gear display on its upper right, as well as the easy-to-read graphics of the display, gives the driver instant detailed information, essential for the performance nature of the GT-R

Functional style is also evident in GT-R – each meter features a dial plate design that evokes the idea of engaged gears, as well as a three-dimensional metal-like ring, suggesting the multi-dimensional performance of the GT-R. A large, metallic-framed center console features the ergonomically designed shift lever and a red “engine start” button.

Adjustability is central to the daily-driver nature of the GT-R, with a special “set-up switch” located in the center of the instrument panel. This switch enables the driver to adjust transmission shifts, shock absorbers and the Vehicle Dynamic Control in three settings – Normal, Comfort or R, the high-performance setting designed for the GT-R “supercar” application.

A high-speed, high-capacity CARWINGS navigation system is available in Japan, with a powerful 30GB hard disk drive, features an easy-to-use touch pad, as well as traditional navigation switches. The screen interface features not only the navigation system, but also an enriched entertainment system with a Music Box hard drive, DVD and CD player, and Bluetooth® audio function.

For special use in the GT-R application, the multi-function display also includes mechanical and driving information for safe high performance driving, including accelerator opening, brake pedal pressure, and steering angle. It also includes an “optimal gearshift map,” to encourage economical vehicle operation.

A specially designed BOSE sound system includes two forward-facing woofers in the rear center armrest area combined with traditional door speakers. All speakers are mounted in rigid aluminum die cast panels, which combined with the design of the system itself, provide sound quality suited for a supercar owner.

BMW’s surprise debut for the 2007 Tokyo Show which starts tomorrow (Oct. 24) is a sport concept version of the recently introduced 1-Series Coupe that evokes memories of the original E30 M3 -despite the fact that it’s named after the classic BMW 2002 tii. The pictures that were leaked into the net a few minutes ago, reveal a low stance 1-Series Coupe with black decals, an aggressive bodykit and several interior mods.

We haven’t got all the details in our hands yet, but according to our sources, BMW’s 1-Series tiii Concept is equipped with a wide range of lightweight features serving to minimize the weight of the car and its axle load distribution. Unfortunately, our sources also told us that BMW won’t announce any engine specifics as the 1-Series tii Concept is a pure design study -at least for now. We’ll have more on Bimmer’s surprise debut later on. Until then, follow the jump and enjoy our image gallery. -Continued

Lotus is gearing up its Elise range for the 2008 Model year with the introduction of the most powerful production Elise to date, the 217 Hp / 220 PS Elise SC. Branded by a new rear spoiler and unique alloy wheel design, the Elise SC is equipped a supercharged version of the Elise’s 1.8-litre 2-ZZ VVTL-i Toyota derived engine. The Lotus-designed, Magnuson-produced supercharger uses an Eaton rotor pack (an M45 unit), and it’s married to the intake manifold plenum as part of a single-piece casting.

According to the Brits, the 903 kg (1987 lbs) Elise goes from standstill to 60 mph in 4.4 secs / 0-100 km/h in 4.6 secs, to 100 mph / 160 km/h in 10.7 secs and off to a top speed of 150 mph / 240 km/h. Not that it matters but the Elise SC features an estimated combined fuel consumption figure of 9.1 lt/ 100 km (31.0 mpg UK or 25.8 mpg US). -Continued after the jump

Along with the introduction of the Elise SC, Lotus also carried on a few minor enchantments to the whole Elise range. These include the standardization of driver and passenger airbags on all models, the newly designed instrument pack that features a high-definition LCD message panel displaying a scrolling text message with vehicle systems information and a completely new alarm/immobiliser system.

Furthermore, because airbags are now standard across the Elise range, the number of trim option packages has been cut from four down to two. Sales of the Elise SC and the 2008 Elise models will start in Europe towards the end of October.

We’ve seen forklifts move a ton of things (crates, portable toilets - you name it), but we’ve never actually seen a forklift try to move a car up to now. But as you can see in the video there’s a damn good reason why not. To make a long story short, former Miss New Zealand beauty queen, Rachel Huljich had illegally parked her brother’s 1999 Maserati 3200 GT Coupe on Sydney's Bilyard Avenue in a construction zone after 7am. Not knowing what to do with it (…) some workers decided to act on their own and move the Italian beauty with a forklift. The rest is history, and from the looks of it, so was the car.

The European Court of Justice ruled today (Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007) that Germany’s so-called “VW Law”, which shielded car maker Volkswagen AG from hostile foreign takeovers is illegal. The Court found that the Federal Republic of Germany failed to fulfil its obligations in respect of the free movement of capital in the European Union. The termination of the law allows Porsche, Volkswagen’s biggest shareholder the same voting rights as the German state of Lower Saxony, the company’s second-largest shareholder.

Porsche has made no secret of its desire to fully acquire control of the Volkswagen Group . Just the other week, Porsche’s CEO Wendelin Wiedeking revealed in an interview on the Sunday Times (click here) that his company is prepared to take control of the company, if the “Volkswagen law” was ruled illegal. Well, Mr. Wiedeking, here’s your chance. -EU Court press release after the jump

PRESS RELEASE No 74/07

23 October 2007

Judgment of the Court of Justice in Case C-112/05

Commission of the European Communities v Federal Republic of Germany

THE VOLKSWAGEN LAW RESTRICTS THE FREE MOVEMENT OF CAPITAL

By maintaining in force the provisions of the Volkswagen Law concerning the capping of voting rights at 20% and the fixing of the blocking minority at 20%, and the right of the Federal State and the Land of Lower Saxony each to appoint two representatives to the supervisory board, the Federal Republic of Germany has failed to fulfil its obligations

On 4 March 2005, the Commission brought an action against Germany on the ground that the Volkswagen Law1 adversely affects the free movement of capital and the freedom of establishment.

In particular, the Commission criticises the following points:

• The right of the Federal State and the Land of Lower Saxony each to appoint two representatives to the undertaking’s supervisory board, on condition that they hold shares in the company;

• the limitation on the exercise of voting rights to 20% of the share capital in the case where the holding of a shareholder exceeds that percentage; and

• the increase to 80% of the shares represented for the majority required to pass resolutions of the general assembly of shareholders, which, under the Law on public limited companies, require only a majority of 75%.

In its judgment delivered today, the Court grants the Commission’s application in so far as it invokes a breach of the free movement of capital. As regards the breach of the freedom of establishment alleged by the Commission, the Court dismissed the action by reason of the Commission’s failure to make specific arguments on this point.

Restrictions on the free movement of capital

1 Law of 21 July 1960 on the privatisation of equity in the Volkswagenwerk GmbH (BGBl. I, p. 585, and BGBl. III, p. 641-1-1), amended on 6 September 1965 (BGBl. I, p. 461) and 31 July 1970 (BGBl. I, p. 1149).

The Court holds that the Volkswagen Law, as an expression of the Federal State’s legislative power, constitutes a national measure. The disputed provisions of the Law are attributable to the Federal State since it alone can amend those provisions in its capacity as legislator.

The Court points out that the EC Treaty prohibits any restriction on movements of capital between Member States. A national measure which is liable to deter direct investments by limiting the possibility for shareholders to participate in the company with a view to establishing or maintaining lasting and direct economic links with it which would make possible effective participation in the management of that company or in its control constitutes such a restriction.

The Court finds that the provisions at issue are liable to have such a deterrent effect.

The capping of voting rights at 20% and the fixing of the blocking minority at 20%

The Court does not exclude the possibility that those two provisions, taken individually, may operate both to the benefit and to the detriment of any shareholder in the company. However, it points out that, when the Volkswagen Law was adopted, the Federal State and the Land of Lower Saxony were the main shareholders in the recently privatised company, in which they each held 20% of the capital, and that the Land of Lower Saxony still retains an interest in that amount. The Court holds that, taken together, the provisions in question enable the Federal State and the Land of Lower Saxony to exercise considerable influence over the affairs of Volkswagen on the basis of a lower level of investment than would be required under general law. This situation is liable to deter direct investors from other Member States.

The right to appoint two representatives to the supervisory board

The possibility for the Federal State and the Land of Lower Saxony, on condition that they are shareholders in the company, each to appoint two representatives to the supervisory board places those public shareholders in a privileged position as compared with that under general company law, under which they would together be entitled to appoint only a maximum of three representatives. Furthermore, on condition that they hold shares in the company, they enjoy the right of appointment irrespective of the level of their shareholding. It is thus possible for the Federal State and the Land of Lower Saxony to exercise influence which exceeds their levels of investment and thus to reduce the influence of the other shareholders to a level below that commensurate with those shareholders’ own levels of investment.

The restrictions on the free movement of capital are not justified

The Court points out that the free movement of capital may be limited by national measures that are justified by legitimate interests. However, the Federal Republic of Germany, beyond setting out general considerations concerning the need for protection against a large shareholder which might by itself dominate the company, has in the present case failed to explain why the provisions at issue are necessary to protect the interests relied on.

First of all, it has been unable to explain why, in order to meet the objective of protecting workers, it is appropriate and necessary for the Federal and State authorities to maintain a strengthened and irremovable position in the capital of Volkswagen.

Secondly, it has also failed to demonstrate why such a position has to be maintained in order to protect the general interests of minority shareholders.

Finally, the Federal Republic of Germany has not explained why the provisions of the Volkswagen Law are appropriate and necessary to preserve the jobs generated by Volkswagen’s activity.

The Court accordingly finds that the Federal Republic of Germany has failed to fulfil its obligations in respect of the free movement of capital.

This print ad is the work of the Danish advertising agency, “Robert/Boisen & Likeminded” which is based in the city of Copenhagen. The advert utilizes a set of roll-coaster style protective bars to accentuate the Japanese mini’s youthful character. In our humble opinion, the ad would have been better targeted if the Danish agency had used the Suzuki Swift Sport with the bucket seats instead of the basic model, which to be honest, isn't what we'd call fun.

The October issue of the official NAIAS (North American International Auto Show) newsletter took us by surprise today as it revealed several of the premieres that will take place at the Detroit show in January 2008.

Among the worldwide debuts revealed in the newsletter are the U.S. version of Ford’s Verve compact hatch that was shown in Frankfurt (click here), the production version of the Kia Mesa SUV concept (okay, we knew about that), Hyundai’s V8-powered, rear-wheel drive luxury sedan, the Genesis, and a new model from Subaru and Mercedes-Benz (most probably the compact SUV, GLK). -Follow the jump for the details

From NAIAS’ October Newsletter:

Ford will unveil a new small concept vehicle for the U.S. market that will share the underbody with a concept that Ford unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The Ford Verve, revealed in Frankfurt, is a crossover vehicle carried on a small B-segment platform.

The Detroit concept will use the same platform, which is smaller than that used for the Ford Focus. But the Detroit concept will have a different body, details of which are not being revealed. Ford executives say the Verve and the upcoming Detroit concept hint at the automaker’s new design direction for future compact cars. The company plans to gauge public reaction to its proposed “super-mini generation,” a vehicle segment Ford anticipates will grow substantially in the future around the world.

Kia has announced it will hold the worldwide debut of its new seven-passenger sport utility in Detroit. The SUV, which goes by the codename HM until the real name is announced, is derived from the Mesa concept. It will be a 2009 model built in Korea and will have three rows of seats, making it larger than Kia’s current Sorento.

Mazda Always to be counted on for unveiling innovative concept cars, Mazda will do it again at NAIAS 2008. The automaker will hold the debut of a new concept car, the name of which has not been revealed, that takes its Nagare design theme to its “most realistic level yet,” company officials said.

Hyundai will unveil to the world the produc-tion version of its flagship Genesis sedan. It will be similar to Concept Genesis, revealed last spring. The 2008 Genesis rides on a rear-wheel-drive pre-mium sports sedan architecture and is powered by a V8 engine – both rear-drive and V8 power are Hyundai firsts in the U.S. Executives at Hyundai have said the car will start at “well under $30,000.” Always to be counted

Mitsubishi plans two worldwide debuts –one a concept car and another a production car. Details on those debuts will be available in December, the automaker said.

Suzuki will hold the North American introduction of a global concept to be first unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in late October. More details will become available at that time.

Subaru plans a global debut in Detroit.

Mercedes-Benz will hold the worldwide debut of a new production model, details of which are being withheld.

GM’s 2007 SEMA Show (Specialty Equipment Market Association) offerings will include a wide range of vehicles many of which will use “eco-friendly” solutions running on alternative fuels, like E85 ethanol. Among GM’s 28 vehicles that will make their way to Las Vegas on Oct. 29 are a specially tuned version of the forthcoming Pontiac G8 GT (Holden Commodore based) built by rapper 50 Cent and Unique Autosports, a Pontiac Solstice SD-290 concept (picture) which features a closed passenger compartment reminiscent of vintage racecars, and a tuned version of the upcoming 2008 Saturn Astra. -Details after the jump

PRESS RELEASE: LAS VEGAS – A diverse array of customized and high-performance cars, trucks and SUVs again dominates the General Motors display at the 2007 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show, but this time there is an underlying message: Green goes with mean.

Many of the 28 vehicles GM will bring to the annual convention of the automotive aftermarket performance and appearance industry either run on alternative fuels, such as E85 ethanol, or feature fuel-efficient performance without compromise. The lineup is headlined by an E85-powered Corvette Z06 owned by Jay Leno. The “Tonight Show” host’s new supercar boasts a custom, 500-cubic-inch engine that generates approximately 600 horsepower and is fueled solely by E85.

Another mean, green Chevy at SEMA is FlexFuel Chevy Hot Rod, built by GM Performance Division – a re-creation of the hot rods that competed at early drag strips and land-speed venues of the late 1940s and 1950s. With bodywork inspired by a 1934 Chevy and period styling touches, FlexFuel Chevy Hot Rod mixes vintage style with contemporary technology; it’s powered by a 500-horse FlexFuel version of the turbocharged Ecotec engine. It runs on E85, gasoline or any combination of the two.

In addition to the alternative-fueled performers in the display, GM will also use the SEMA platform to introduce some influential concepts and production models, including the Pontiac Solstice SD-290 concept, which showcases a unique passenger compartment closeout evoking the spirit of vintage racecars, and a tuner-inspired version of the upcoming 2008 Saturn Astra. Chevy will make a couple of sport compact production announcements on Monday, Oct. 29, that will surely please the tuner crowd.

Celebrity endorsements will be in full force all over the SEMA show floor as three urban-inspired Enclaves customized by a trio of the industry’s most influential designers, including Rick Bottom, former NBA star Jerome Williams’ Automotive Street Style, and Mitek will be on display, along with a new Pontiac G8 GT built by rapper 50 Cent and Unique Autosports.

Additional concept and specialty vehicles in the display include:

Cadillac –Factory customized CTS Sport and Escalade Sport concepts show how sporty these new models can look with a few, carefully crafted styling and stance enhancements.

Chevrolet –In addition to the E85 ethanol-powered machines described above, Chevy is featuring a bevy of tricked-out trucks and custom cars, including:

  • Silverado HD Crew Cab Z71 “Big Red” concept, influenced by last year’s Dale Earnhardt Jr. Big Red concept
  • Silverado HD Country Music concept with fold-out, portable stage
  • Silverado Major League Baseball show vehicle
  • Silverado/GM Performance Parts LSX-powered regular cab truck with 640 horsepower
  • Suburban HD Z71 diesel, with a new 4.5L diesel engine
  • Camaro Convertible concept
  • Impala SS “Car of Tomorrow” NASCAR racecar show vehicle

GMC –The Yukon All-Terrain show vehicle follows in the tracks of last year’s Sierra All-Terrain concept and is designed to complement active lifestyles; and the Sierra HD Denali is a “what if” look at applying GMC’s most premium aesthetic to the Sierra 2500HD.

HUMMER –A pair of serious off-roaders is on hand, including the racing-inspired H3R and the adventure-seeking H2 Safari.

Pontiac –Along with the Solstice SD-290, Pontiac will feature two new G8 performance sedans, including a slightly enhanced version of the G8 GT production model and a completely customized G8 GT from 50 Cent and Unique Autosports (viewed in the Pirelli Tires display).

A collaboration between Pontiac, 50 Cent and Unique Autosports – the New York-based custom shop featured on the show “Unique Whips” – 50 Cent’s red-and-black performance sedan is equipped with a GM Performance Parts LSX 427 engine, custom paint, 22-inch chrome wheels and a custom-tailored interior boasting an 800-watt audio system.

Saturn –Marking the introduction of the all-new Astra sport-compact, Saturn shows off a tuner-inspired example that uses subtle exterior and chassis mods, as well as unique wheels, to give the car a street-wise stance.

GM Accessories and GM Performance Parts

In addition to the concept vehicles at the GM display, General Motors introduces products and initiatives that will surely influence enthusiast projects of the near future, including a collaboration with DUB to develop a variety of appearance and performance components.

GM Performance Parts (GMPP) teamed up with GM Performance Division to give the most famous 1957 Chevy magazine car of all time – Popular Hot Rodding’s Project X – its ultimate “rectification.”

GMPP also introduces a bevy of high-performance engines and engine support components, led by the Anniversary 427 crate engine – a limited-edition, all-aluminum big-block based on the legendary ZL-1 engine. It is completed by the ZZ427, a regular-production crate engine that features most of the same high-performance attributes of the Anniversary 427, but with an iron cylinder block.

Also new from GMPP is an LS3 crate engine, tall-deck LSX cylinder block and a trio of “LS” engine controller kits that make engine integration easy.

Kumho Epoch: Eco-Friendly Racing Concept

Monday, October 22, 2007 | 0 comments » Categories | , | Bookmark and Share

So there’s no misunderstanding, when we say Kumho we do actually mean the Korean tire manufacture. Well, the folks at Kumho seem to have found some time off from making tires to create an environmentally friendly Le Mans racing concept – on paper of course. The Epoch was penned by Kumho’s in-house designer, Rob Dolton who works at Kumho’s European Technical Centre in Birmingham, UK.

According to its Dolton, the single-seater Epoch, features a chassis made from bamboo while its lightweight body panels are formed from recycled tire tread rubber. Power in theory comes from Maglev (Magnetic Levitation) units integral to the four-wheel hubs (an electromagnetic technology used in the railway industry). -Continued after the jump

As you’d expect, the Epoch also features innovative tire technology. Kumho calls it EAP (Electro Active Polymer) and it allows the tread and even the shape of the tires to be altered simply by passing an electric current through the rubber. The latter is achieved by the positioning of magnets on the hubs and within the wheel rims allowing the characteristics of the tire to be altered at will in order to suit different tastes and conditions.

A couple of days ago, Chrysler organized the “Sweetest Day the Jeep Way” challenge in Cleveland where contestants had to lick their way through one of seven chocolate-covered Jeep vehicles. The first two that licked their way through the chocolate had to find a set of keys hidden in a Liberty filled with wrapped candy. In the end, Anne Gemkow from Chicago, won the Jeep Liberty

Honestly, it’s been a while since we laughed so hard. You can get a taste (…) of the contestants in Jeep’s official video above but in order to fully appreciate the art of licking you HAVE to see the b-roll footage. Trust us; you’ll find it hilarious - though we do know a couple of lads that might actually find this umm kinda hot… Click here to see the b-roll footage on Jeep’s official site

Look Mo, no hands, no remote control! This weird looking Land Rover LR3 (Discovery) has been crafted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to drive all by itself avoiding obstacles, even merging into moving traffic without any human assistance whatsoever.

The fully autonomous LR3 is designed to take part in a driverless car competition dubbed 2007 DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) Urban Challenge which will be held on November 3, 2007 in Victorville, CA. During the event, the driverless vehicles will have to cross through a 60-mile mock city course completing a stipulated route within a period of six hours. It remains unclear whether the cars will able to receive the prize all by themselves or if human assistance will be needed... -Details after the jump

PRESS RELEASE: IRVINE, Calif., Oct 22, 2007- Land Rover has joined forces with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) by donating a Land Rover LR3 that has been built to be fully autonomous so it can take part in the forthcoming 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge.

MIT has completely modified the LR3, a vehicle already packed with technology, so that without human driver assistance or remote control, the vehicle is able to drive itself and perform simple tasks such as avoiding obstacles and merging into moving traffic.

The LR3 uses state-of-the-art hardware to view the environment and to track its own motion while driving on major roads or moving through cities. It is equipped with LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) range finders with vision sensors in order to view the environment, helping it avoid obstacles that might get in its way. In order to track its progress along the roads, the vehicle uses a combination of GPS (Global Positioning System) and INS (Inertial Navigation System).

With this combination of technology, the vehicle can locate itself within half of a meter anywhere in the world, giving it the ability to stay on road at all times. By grouping these technologies, the LR3 can navigate itself while avoiding anything that might get in its way.

The DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) Urban Challenge is an annual competition where several autonomous vehicles, like this specialized LR3, compete against each other in several different rounds.

After successfully completing the qualifying round in early August, Team MIT and the LR3 have been invited back to compete in the challenging semi-final round taking place on October 26-31, with the goal of making it to the final competition.

The DARPA Urban Challenge final event will be held in Victorville, CA on November 3, 2007. During the competition, the vehicles will need to traverse through a 60-mile mock city course within six hours, and will be challenged with tasks while completing a stipulated route. Some of these tasks include executing simulated supply missions while merging into moving traffic, navigating traffic circles, negotiating busy intersections and avoiding various obstacles - all without a driver or via remote control.

Unless you shut down your desktop computer, threw out your laptop and moved to a remote area in Alaska for the past two days, you couldn’t have missed out on the ZR-1 frenzy that went on during the weekend. To make a long story short, GM rolled out a prototype version of the Corvette at California’s Laguna Seca Raceway and everyone went completely haywire as the vehicle is believed to be the long rumoured ZR-1, previously know as the “Blue Devil”. Today, ALMS (American Le Mans Series) released a new set of images featuring the ZR-1 running around the Californian race circuit. In case you really spent the weekend in Alaska, click here to see the video of the alleged ZR-1. -Image gallery after the jump

Once upon a time, not long ago, an over-optimistic Korean carmaker set plans to sell 1 million cars in the U.S. market by 2010. Today, the same Korean automaker will be lucky if it manages to surpass the half-a-million mark by the end of 2007, let alone reach 1 million sales in three years from now. Hyundai’s U.S. sales through September reached 358,407 units, down 0.2 percent from the same period last year. In 2006, full-year sales were 455,520 units which makes you wonder how Hyundai will manage to reach the revised goal of 512,000 units (down from 555,000). Hyundai even had to halt production (see here) of its best-selling car, the Sonata sedan, sales of which are down 19.6 percent through September.

Poor sales have created havoc at Hyundai’s American headquarters which is responding with a constant reshuffling of top managers and strategic moves. As Automotive News points out, Hyundai’s decision to bring back dealer ad associations just nine months after getting rid of them is a perfect example of the situation. Guess Hyundai has to learn the hard way that it’s one thing playing the game as an outsider and another as a major player.

The C30 now sprints from 0 to 100km/h (62 km/h) in 7.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 225km/h or 146 mph. Here we go boys, let the tuning games begin! Shortly after the Japanese market debut of the all-new Mitsubishi Lancer EVO X (click here), HKS revealed a teaser shot of the high-performance sedan featuring prototype sport parts. From what we were able to make from the translated release, the Japanese tuner will focus on two main areas: extra power and increased grip thanks to new suspension parts, lower ride height and different tire/alloy wheel combinations. By the way, doesn’t the white HKS EVO X RS with those alloy wheels looks outright sick?

Funny how a different mixture of colors can totally screw up a good design. If you follow the jump you’ll see that apart from the “alpine-white” version of the 2008 Le Mansory Bentley Continental GT featured in the above picture, the German tuning and design shop also offers the British luxury coupe in a “bumblebee” themed color choice which just makes you wanna puke honey. So unless you’re one of those people who think that Carrot Top looks cool, we’d advise you to go for the ‘alpine-white’ version. -Continued after the jump

Whatever color you choose though, if you're seriously interested (and rich), better hurry up as the 2008 Le Mansory Bentley Continental GT, which pays homage to the 24h Le Mans race, will be built in a limited quantity of 24 sets. Wide-bodykit aside, the supped up Bentley coupe also gets 22-inch alloy wheels in 265/35/22 high performance profile tires up front and 305/30/22 tires at the rear-end.

Inside, Mansory equips the Continental GT with carbonfibre trim inserts, sport steering wheel in combination Leather/Carbon, illuminated sill plates in stainless steel with a lighted LE MANSORY Logo, foot deposit pedals, brake- and restpedal in stainless steel high polished punched and floor mats with LE MANSORY logo stick with leather border.

Under the hood, Mansory’s electronic engineering package helps the 6-liter Twin-Turbocharged W12 engine’s performance grow up to 641bhp (650PS or 478 kW) at 6100rpm and peak torque to 780 Nm (575-lb/ft) at 1.600 rpm. The British coupe now accelerates from 0 - 100km/h in 4.6 seconds (0 - 60mph/h 4.4 seconds) and goes on to a top speed of 205 mph or 330 km/h.

Along with engine enhancements, the German tuner has revised the braking system which gets massive BREMBO 412/38 rotor discs with 6 piston aluminium fixed calipers in front and disc dimensions 405/22 with 4 piston calibers in the rear.
