Just as we where getting ready to call it a day, a reader of ours dropped us an e-mail that included the first official images of the all-new Fiat 500 Abarth that’s set to be unveiled in Geneva next month. If you liked the standard 500’s appearance then you’re definitely going to fall in love with the 500 Abarth.

The sport version of Fiat’s hugely popular minicar has been fitted with an aggressive bodykit that included new bumpers, side skirts, a rear diffuser, wider fenders that house larger alloy rims, a roof spoiler, red mirror caps and Abarth decals. Add the twin exhaust outlets in the rear and this is one 500 that you won’t call cute. There are no images of the interior, but it apparent from the ghost sketches that Abarth has equipped the sporty 500 with a pair of red bucket seats.

Sorry to say, we don’t have any technical details in our hands yet, but we’re guessing that the 500 Abarth will be equipped with Fiat’s 1.4-liter turbocharged engine developing between 120 and 150 HP. –More images after the jump

Thanks for the pics CC!

wow, an '89 CRX, but without the 160hp b16a option...

Thanks kiwi kung fu for your gross ignorance.

The original Fiat 500 Abarth was introduced when Honda was still in nappies.

And how on earth could you draw a conclusion with a CR-X? If you're saying they look similiar, well get your eyes checked immediately.

looks like rendering to me, but i could be wrong.

From a marketing stand point, IMO, they need to play with the bhp number a bit so on paper it matches the cooper S's figures.

Personally, i like this much more than the mini.

I drove the standard 1.4 Sport on launch and felt that it was definitely i. a bit too girly and ii. lacking in power by about 30 or 40bhp (it sounded great but had no 'go' for s small car).

The Abarth - which looks great -seems to have fixed those reservations, although I would prefer it to have 150bhp for around £14k, with an option to upgrade to 180bhp for another £1500.

Despite the previous comments, this isn't really a competitor for the MINI in terms of size (that would be the Punto Grande Abarth), but on style it IS a competitor and so Fiat must make the price a good deal lower than the MINI. In other words, if I was spending £16k/ £17k and perhaps considering a 500 Abarth SS, I would just go for the safer bet, the Cooper S.

In a auction held in london a modified Fiat 500 was sold for 1.5 crore rupees. The modification in the car was the painting done on the body by Tracey Emine, a leading european artist. The money which came from the auction went into the charity for children.........

you seem to be autophilic. I can provide you with details of event and the pics. You can publish it on your blog.........cheers

just thought id post some information that will impress you all. ive been to fiat and got the specs of the engine they have had word that the 500 engine is going to be a 1.8 turbo producing a wopping between 150-200bhp the true figures are not in but fiat has emailed them and the engine will be around this figure. also the new punto abarth will have a 1.8 turbo petrol with 220bhp and there is rumors of a abarth bravo which will have a 2.0 turbo with 250bhp.

Im not sure if you know already but I know a few details on the Abarth 500 that I havent seen on here yet.

The standard Abarth 500 will be a 1.4 Turbo petrol engine, with 16 valves and 135 horsepower. Which Fiat are selling 200 to start with. But the one to have is the Esseesse which is a 1.4 16v Turbo T-Jet engine max power 160 bhp top speeds of 211km/hr and o-100 in 7.4 seconds. There are 5 options for paint,2 options of alloys and 3 options of interior, you don't get as much options as the Fiat 500 but it's a beautiful looking car.

They wont be with customers until March, by the time you've ordered it and its been delivered to the dealer.

available in US market for 2009?

I saw a review on the fiat 500 abarth, on Top Gear, it is said to have 160bhp, and Clarkson loved it, and to be honest it looked fun as small cute "wannabe" lambo :D

to Kiwi Kung Fu- "looks like an 89 CRX" ??? only if you have been kung fu'd ,chop su eed or feng shui' d in the head ( apparently repeatedly). WHAT??? take your vitamins and the doctor will see you now for your shot.

With the news of Fiat gaining a massive stake in Chrysler to act as a bridge to re-open it's US market I can truly get excited about these. Before I thought it was a great car, but with all the customs and shipping it just wouldn't be worth it to move a small car, you would pay more for the shipping than the car itself.

Then again the US probably won't see the abarth or any sport versions especially due to the nasty EPA requirements.

Ordered mine in '60s Campovolo Grey for 1/6 delivery. It's to replace my Elise, which has been a great car, but I was 'blown away' by this stunning little car.

    i love the 500

The CRX comparison has no weight because the Honda had to be thrashed within an inch of its redline to generate horsepower and torque. Mini, and now Fiat, have figured out that a fat torque curve with the goods delivered at 1500-2000 rpm is where it's at for *usable* high performance.

After all, who wants to cane the tits off their every day driver in order to get some giggles?

  20. Anonymous » April 08, 2009

Your right, it doesn't look like a CRX. It looks like a piece of junk that will adorn Chrysler showrooms right next to the stylish Sebrings.

I'm in Minnesota and if this tiny little thing thinks it will survive over here???? Fiat is making a huge mistake. No way would this toy make it here. Maybe in warmer less rigorous climates like ITALY but out here you need a large vehicle with high ground clearance, 4 wheel drive and built rugged. Fiat CEO's should fly over in January and check out the market here when it matters. Had a Fiat 128 on the east coast and it hydroplaned in the rain and 4 people could pick it up! Rust issues, transmission problems but otherwise fun in the summers around town. Not practical in much of the USA. Just saw a 1940 Ford pickup which has never had any work done on it and it purrs like brand new. Italy doesn't get it and neither does Obama.

Thier are also cold climits in italy to genius and guess what I know a guy who happens to live in Norway who owns a fiat it runs great... And how long has Obama been president and he still is alot better than mister totalitarianist bush you want a demcracy yet the man you support bush his doctrine happens to say we are the next Rome and with out Rusia we now can do what ever we want.. Now this is a wonderful car and apolled that it was even compared to a ford, or a front wheel civic.. It has wonderful handiling and I only prey it comes to the US

Totally disagree with other Minnesota resident. I've driven a 1984 Pontiac Fiero YEAR round, including the Winters with NO problems. (48 years)It is about ability and skill more then a large over weight GAS HOG. We need more small, efficient and safe vehicles. I welcome FIAT and look forward to driving one in the near future.

We LOVE the new Fiat 500. Our company has been making carbon fiber parts for the new 500 in the UK and Europe where this car has been a smash hit sales wise. It's a great car, well built, reliable, and fun to drive. This car will help keep Chrysler dealers alive and preserve dealership jobs. Get ready america!
