Surprise, surprise; 14 official, high-res images of the forthcoming Hyundai Genesis Coupe found their way into the internet this morning, despite Hyundai’s initial plans to reveal its first rear-wheel-drive coupe at the New York Show opening on March 19, 2008. To be totally honest, the Genesis Coupe’s appearance is no shocker for us here at Carscoop -and not because of the LA Show Concept, but because we had the chance to see the production model in a set of pics shot during a marketing presentation that took place in the US in June 2007 (click here).

Despite the fact that we don’t have a press release in our hands yet, Hyundai did reveal a few official details on the coupe last year. According to the Korean carmaker, the Genesis coupe will be powered by a 3.8-liter V6 engine producing more than 300 Hp. Matted to a six-speed manual gearbox, the 4,666 mm / 183.7 in. long 2+2 coupe will sprint from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in under 6.0 sec. Sales of the Coupe in the US are expected to start in early 2009.

Although this hasn’t been verified, at last year’s marketing presentation it was said that the Genesis Coupe will also be offered with a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder unit producing 215 Hp with prices set at $19,900 and $25,900 for the 4- and 6-cylinder models respectively. We’ll have all the official information on the Genesis Coupe at next week’s NY Show opening. –Image gallery after the jump

WOW, Hyundai is moving up rapidly. The design reminds me of a cross between a recent BMW and the Infiniti G35 coupe. For the price I think these will sell like hot cakes...the turbo 4 should get great gas mileage while the 300hp plus V6 is bragging rights, but 0-60 should be under 5.5 to be serious.
    Either way, great job Hyundai!

A rather awkward looking coupe, looks like its been designed by a few different people, one front, one middle, one back, then they all brought their effort to the table on a piece of A4 and taped it together. Rubbish.

The rear quarter windows remind me of the tin top Z4 as do the bulging rear shoulders, I'm very impressed, it's got a sexy arse. Not so sure about the front, it's almost there, The small grill and squinting lights are a bit weak and fussy compared with the boldness of the rear.
    It has promise though.

John@Carscoop, thanks for keeping it clean, there are a few Auto blogs I simply will no longer post in because all you get are comments from people like Anon #2. I have a lot of respect for Carscoop for that reason. Thanks again.

Anon #2: Your subjectivity is almost as entertaining as your grammar.

Some of the detailing, such as the rear side window, looks a bit weird, but overall I think it looks great, and should look even better in a less boring colour.

It's quite good looking, I have to admit, but I do think that the front end looks too Lexus-IS-ish :D

Nice looking coupe, to bad GM or Ford can't build one with that much refinement for under 20k. They can't even build a car all the safety bits that come on hyundai's for under 25K not to mention all the pieces don't fit correctly on American made products.

Car looks good, a natural evolution for the Tiburon.

it is a step forward of the Tiburon!! Thats for sure. But the curb weight is over 3580 pounds for the V6, and its still almost 3500 pounds for the wimpy turbo four =( Its cool they got a rear drive coupe, but i think there are way to late into the game and need to focus on small cars. I mean, they bench marked a G35, which is now a 5 year old car already and was replaced with the G37!!! Why benchmark something they dont make anymore? hahahaha Anyways, i am sure it will appeal to some young buyers who might cross shop a mustang. Buy i am afraid it is still not going to scare away G35-G37 owners at all.
