New York Show Déjà vu: Remind You of Something?

|
The term déjà vu is French and it literally means, “Already seen”. As with most auto shows, we got that overwhelming sense of familiarity with some of the vehicles that made their debut at New York’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center too. Leaving aside the 2009 Acura TSX and the Pontiac G8 Sport Truck that are re-grilled versions of the 2009 Euro Honda Accord and Holden Ute respectively, we found several cars that reminded us of other vehicles in one way or another.

Just to set things straight, we’re not saying that these vehicles are the product of cloning, but they do share a number of common design elements with other cars. Sometimes, this is more obvious like for example the front-end of the Kia KOUP Concept with that of the Euro Honda Civic Type-R, other times, less apparent, like the overall shape of the Hyundai Genesis Coupe compared to that of the Infinit G37 Coupe. –Check out our comparisons right after the jump

Durrrrrrr

Pontiac G8 is built on the same production lines as the Holden Ute in Australia. The only meaningful difference is the badges!

Look no further than China for REAL copy-cat designs

JB, no one said in the article that they where copy-cat designs: "Just to set things straight, we’re not saying that these vehicles are the product of cloning, but they do share a number of common design elements with other cars"

as said before, the pontiac and holden are pretty much the same car.
now if you nutters didnt already know (which you do), the acura TSX is exactly the same as the euro spec accord.
both are badge engineered models for different markets. gahhhhhd.

Guys, we said that in our article: The G8 and the TSX are "re-grilled" versions of the Holden Ute and Honda Accord respectively. We did not say that Pontiac or Acura copied anyone.

I want to work for Hyundai/Kia. It's so much easier to design a car! All you need is some photoshop skill and go out there download some pictures of other cars and cut them apart then put different pieces together. A new car is now born! Such EASY JOB with DECENT PAY.
Anybody know where I can send my resume to?

lol.. this is funny... it looks as though design isnt unlimited at all... im not saying theyre copying other car makers. im just saying, when you come up with something, its already been designed by some other car makers...

Man, that's why I liked the KOUP so much. The front part is exactly like the Civic's. The same with Saleen.

The Genisis coupe from Hyundai better looking then a G35. It is the biggest car of the NewYork auto show.

Durrr

JB of London youre half right. They are the same car more or less but I believe RHD are built in Melbourne and LHD are built in Adelaide. Dunno why....

But if you think about it.

How many cars we see out there own a particular "unique never been done" design element out there?

Sure the Kia looks alot like the Civic... Yeah and the Genisis Coupe looks somewhat like a G35, but does it look bad? not the least. But as a car enthusiast I won't be caught in one anytime soon.

And then again someone out there might because something out there that looks good that gets them from A to B and for the right price it will sell.

Car Manufactures with less badge credibility have to employ this copycat strategy as a way to launch thier business. These companies cannot afford to spend a huge amount on creating unique designs and risk it being unsucessful on the market. It's better for them to loosely base it on an already sucessful design. Just look at Toyota in the 70s they were copycats then as well, but now they are amoung largest car firms in the world.

So there is lots of Deja-vus in this year's autoshow, but hey, everyone gotta start somewhere.

"These companies cannot afford to spend a huge amount on creating unique designs and risk it being unsucessful on the market"?!?!

wake up man.... hyundai/kia cannot afford to get new design on their own?! HA!!

It's NOT they cannot afford it, they are too CHEAP to pay for it...

It's pretty SAD to see those people drive those CHEAP KNOCK-OFF CRAP....

copy and past... those koreans should be shame about it...lol

My friend, when I say "Afford" I don't mean fiancially, I'm not saying they don't have money to pay for an original design.

Let me explain, Lets just say you were say Kia or Hyundai and you paid for an amazing original design, the question is how many of you are willing to pay for a great unique looking Kia?

Mind you the price of this original design will reflect in the price.

Will you pay $60,000 for a Kia? I sure won't.

Most cars you see on the road today like Mercedes, BMW, Audi, VW, Chevy, Chrysler etc all have heritage... and thier trademarked designed image to some are even viewed as being iconic.

Relatively young brands from Korea have difficulity finding a unique brand image. What's even harder is for general public to be convinced that thier new "unique" image upholds quailty and coolness.

Like I said even I can't find myself to like any cars that comes out of Korea or China becuase I am a badge snob, it's true the diffrence is that I understand why they choose to copy.

furthermore, anyone who thinks Kia or Hyundai copies should try to design a car themselfs in which is appealing Without copying any parts of any exsisting cars... just try.
