John and Helen Taylor have secured a place in the “2009 Guinness Book of Records” as the gallant couple set two new fuel economy records when they drove around the coast of Australia in a standard Peugeot 308 HDi 110. During their 25 day, 9,000 mile long journey around the coast of Australia this April, the couple not only managed to record an unprecedented 1,192 miles or 1,917 km on just 60 litres or 15.8 gallons (US) of diesel fuel, but they also averaged a fuel consumption of 75.6 MPG US or 3.1lt/100 km.

According to Peugeot, with their accomplishment, the 308 HDi 110 hatchback now holds the World Record for both the highest average fuel consumption on a journey, a record previously held by a Peugeot 307 hatchback, and the record for the furthest distance travelled on a single tank of fuel. -Continued

John Taylor, commented: “We were very aware of the strong environmental credentials of the 308 before we set out on this journey; but we had no idea, however, that it would be such a record breaker. For us, the Peugeot 308 is the perfect family car; it can comfortably seat five adults and during our 25 day trip, the boot space proved itself too, swallowing up our entire necessary luggage.”

People have achieved much higher fuel economy than that, some up to 200 mpg and over 2,000 miles on a tank. It's called hypermiling. It also makes sense that a hybrid would be able to set the record over a diesel, as well.

When the hell are we getting this in the U.S. The car is much more attractive than the Prius. Big Oil is raping us while Europe and beyond enjoy these new fleet of super-mpg cars before anyone else.

Know about Hpermiling. My Hilux 4x2 2.4l Diesel, 1989 model, I was able to get 1,100 kms out of tank driving around Adelaide. Could have gotten more, but got sick of driving it so slow, no more than 50Km/h.

Why do people complain that "We do not have high MPG cars in the USA"?

The 1985 Chevy Sprint with a 3cyl was rated 39city/47hwy. I personally know of an owner who regularly got 52hwy.

Mind you this is GAS, not Diesel.

The reason we do not have high mileage cars in the US is because the government would miss out on to much tax revenue. A 100 MPG car would be like a 75% tax cut for the people. We all know that will never happen. Please stop complaining about the oil companies and the car companies, think who has the most to lose.

Why aren't these cars here. Because of the same reason that the Chrysler PT Cruiser is listed as a truck by federal regulations, draw your own picture of how that happened.
