The pictures, courtesy of Jalopnik and their reader “Polar” whose friend was behind the Smart’s wheel, show that the Fortwo received quite a battering. However, the driver managed to walk away from the accident with minor abrasions from the airbags. Having said that, the first-gen Fortwo did its job by protecting its passengers. We’re not aware of the extent of damages, but bear in mind that the Fortwo’s exterior body panels are made from (interchangeable) plastic. -More images after the jump

That accident was in Toronto, Canada, not the USA.
considering the damage in smart car was basicly the plastic body panels, and the trucks got quit damage (for a hit with such a small car)....i would say that smart is much safer than it looks or anyone thought!
yeah, the fortwo has ontario plates on...
Definitely Toronto given the wording on the Fire Dept jacket.
More importantly the letters CDI on the Smart diesel?
Probably a gray or grey market vehicle
yeah it is an early model from the first generation and it is diesel.from the pics it is clear that the tridion cage does its job right (in city speed accidents) and to let you know cause i got one, the back of the seats is metal in order to give extra protecion to passengers.
Yes, CDI for diesel.
No, probably not a grey market vehicle - Canada has been getting the Smart car for a few years now.
And I believe that the smartcar is produced in France...
germany man
I had a for2 and a roadster - excellent cars.
It has a triple re-inforced steel cell under the plastic, and it has next to no crumple zone, so it's tactic is to activate the crumple zone on the other car... it's hard as ****!
If 2 crash in to each other, god knows what happens though?
It is a german car but the factory is in France, he is right about that. Mercedes makes it, so it's safe.
