We’d totally understand it if someone took a mid 90’s BMW M3 E36 with half a million miles and turned it into a nice weekend track racer, but completely gutting out a 2006 BMW M5 E90 -yes, the latest model with the 507Hp V10 powerhouse- is something that doesn’t quite sound right.
The owner of the car says that he was able to remove a total of 600 lbs or about 272kg from the BMW M5’s body – mainly from the interior which now features a roll cage and a set of light weight bucket seats. I'd tear up the dash, throw in an oversized, fighter jet style starter switch, bang on a big spoiler and put 'MUGEN' stickers down the side.
Why? Because if you can afford to be a douche in your Beamer, you can afford to be an even BIGGER douche in a RICED Beamer!
Wow. And it was fast already. But when you take out 600pounds of fat, it would be even faster, stop better and transition even quicker. Someone put a stop watch on this thing, it's gotta be 1/2 second quicker or maybe even a full second to 60mph. Lower the fearing to 160-170 mph and it'll be a phenomenal rocket ship.
Nice job, nevertheless.
Whatever makes you happy eh?
definitely a step in the right direction; a big departure from the average bimmer driver.
600 lbs is A LOT. It has to be really really fast now.
I love, but 2 suggestions
1. got to put 2 buckets in the back cos what's the point of a 4 door track special if you can't scare the kids/friends/mother-in-law etc
2. and rip the dash out (6Okg?) and put this in

too much money makes kids paranoid.
I believe he could make minus two seconds per lap with that kind of lightening weight. In case he's gonna join the WTCC :))
I think this was an excellent idea. What better place for making the most of an brilliant driving machine than on the track? Face it, when and how often do you think most M5s get to stretch their legs for more than a few, sweaty minutes when the coppers aren't looking? Or on an autobahn, but frankly, going fast in a straight line just isn't all that fun. So the logical thing is just what this owner did, strip it down to the basics and have buckets of fun.
600lbs? Hard to believe from just gutting the interior. Those seats must weight a ton.
In any case, more "power" to him. ;)
Halldor^^^
I own an E39 M5 and I live in Germany; legstretching on the Autobahn is my forte, and straightlines? have you been to Germany and seen the 'bahns? or your standard ausfahrt? if it ain't twinsting you in your seat its not in Germany!
Either way that E60 is badass. Gives me a very good idea:
What do you do with an E39 M5 that you don't want to get rid of but don't wnat to drive daily? :)
This is a track car. Anybody who hasn't participated in a local track day really has no right to judge this person's actions. Arm-chair quarterbacks, just relax, don't hate. It's addicting really. You want to do everything you can to maximize your car's potential on the track. For those lucky enough to have a dedicated track car, this is standard issue treatment.
BTW, I love that color. I need this car in my garage today.
I'm pretty sure I saw this car at Mid-Ohio in June of 08. I was there with the BMW CCA licensing school and there was an E60 ///M trailered-in for the DE portion of the weekend. There can't be too many E60s prepped for the track like this one...
Actually, I just fitted a UUC Corsa exhaust on an E60 today. Came back from the test drive not 5 minutes ago. Oh, the wonderful sounds...
Looks nice, but that isnt a rollcage.
You did see this car at M-O. I was there too, in my more-stripped but far-uglier E36. By the way, that is an E60 M5, not an E90, and the thing was FAST and sounded amazing. Fall-Line does good work, but not cheap by a long shot. And yes, just a 4-point roll bar, not a full cage.
Useless. What class, what ruleset, what position in class, why? HPDE champ ftw. He could have bought 2 IP cars, a stacker and a dually for what he paid.
This guy has the right idea, track cars are so much quicker then road cars and it all comes down to weight. A lightwieght track car can easily take on cars with motors 3 times the size and put in comparable laptimes.
This is the way to go, rock out bro.
