Just a week after the presentation of the all-new 7-Series, BMW has now taken the wraps off the facelifted 3-Series sedan and touring models that are due to make their first public appearance at the Paris motor show in October with sales following shortly after. The most significant changes in the 2009 3-Series concern the fresh front and rear styling, partially inspired from the new 7-Series.

In particular, the 2009 3-Series’ reworked front end is more dramatic thanks to the sculpted hood, the new heavily profiled bumper, the revised headlights and the new grille that lost the chrome “eyebrows”. At the rear, BMW’s design team (finally) added a new set of tail-lights reminiscent of those found in the new 7-Series along with a newly shaped trunk lid and bumper. The exterior mirrors are also new.

Inside, minor tweaks include the new trim combos, a revised armrest and an updated version of BMW’s iDrive controller along with a new, high-resolution 8.8-inch color monitor. There are no changes under the hood as the 3-Series retains the same engines as before. -42 high res images after the jump

I wonder if this will have the all new iDrive version, as seen on carscoop on the new 7? I note the buttons by the iDrive dial are new?

I wonder how many of those 'new' parts are 'borrowed' from Mercedes in their new parts sharing plan?

Finally, a less ugly version of the 3 series

I can't say i see great improvement in the design. It is not really a pretty car in terms of steel to windows to wheels ratio, and not balanced in those terms. It does not seem as sporty as it actually is and claims. The Facelift did not improve as much as expected.

For the second last anonymous poster, obviously "ugly" is the operative word. The facelift is less ugly but the car is still ugly. Further proof that Bangle's cars may sell well but they sure look like hell doing so. Squashed up and fat in profile and rear, with an ugly glasshouse and weird proportions. Even when Bangle tries to go conservative, he fails miserably.

What a car, sheer driving pleasure!!

Not a big change, but the front does look better with the new lower air inlets giving a better overall look. Looks are subjective - I actually like Bangle's style on the upcoming 7 series. I have a 2006 3 series and I'm quite happy with it. I wish they'd ditch the run flat tires - they're just awful.

Wow! I wasn't sure Bangle could make the back end look even more like a mid-90s Civic, but I stand corrected. Still one of the worst 3-series ever.

Lol looks like someone's been multiple posting with vague, monosyllabic press release exaltations on this model which still looks bland at best, a confusion of lines and bulges at worst. One only needs to look at the E46 to see how BMW has regressed in design.

I don't know why they're wasting time rearranging the deckchairs on this titanic of a mis-design. What they really need to fix is the dreadfully boring and regressive interior/cockpit. A Plymouth Valiant had a more invigorating layout and makes better use of space. My E46 coupe will be a not be replaced anytime soon......

Is there any difference to the current, really? A gay car, definately.

The rear end treatment still looks
    like a Japanese import--pudgy and
boring. I much prefer the styling
    of my 2003 325ci.

I'm really conflicted about buying a new BMW. I'm a fan of the E34 to maybe E39 styling. All the stuff after that just went to hell. This car seems to be simply adding lines to a style that sucks. It looks like a Toyota Camry.

A BMW is supposed to look like a BMW, not just drive like one. The engineering is always pretty consistent on the inside, but for fks sake. Who do we have to screw to get a car that looks like it's not just another POS on the road?

I agree. What is needed is a clean sheet of paper. Headlights do not have to sweep back to a sharp point! They ruined the later E46's with this wretched 'feline' design after 2002/3. At least the new X5 is not quite as severe in this dept. A sign of things to come hopefully.

I own an E90 (325D) which drives superbly and looks awful. It looks ugly and dated compared with the new designs from Ford and Vauxhall at a fraction of the cost.BMW offer little for much money, even the Sports seats have no lumbar support. It'll cost you around £40,000 for a 3 series with extras which come as standard on other cars.Forget the useless rain sensor and make the front seats comfortable. The water based paint is not very robustresulting in lots of stains and scratches.I will buy another one, fortunately I can afford £40,000.
