It is without a doubt that future commenters will point out that this car's front end strangely resembles the current-generation Honda Civic, and I will attempt to pre-empt these remarks with one of my own. There are many different ways to go about copying other designs, and the design used by the Kia Forte WORKS. It may unabashedly steal the Civic's headlamps, but in the end, the whole picture works, and Kia's sub-compact line is moving in the right direction.

  2. Anonymous » August 24, 2008

Agreed Jenny. While the headlight/ grill resemble the current Civic's, the chiseled lines look wonderful and fully unique in their own right. This is what's going to make Kia a real player in todays market.

Keep up the good work Kia!

  3. Anonymous » August 24, 2008

That is a sweet looking little car. Much nicer than the Chevy Cruze sedan pics I saw recently. Hopefully the Kia will have good fit and finish and NVH levels. Add a decent engine and Im sure it will be popular. Nice work Kia.

  4. Rick W. » August 24, 2008

    True Jenny.

I agree that Kia is finally moving into the right direction. Even one up perhaps on top of the parent company, Hyundai. The power is OK, but with 5 people sitting in that car, it'll wind and downshift all too often to keep the car moving.

    It definitely needs a 160hp inline 4 or a turbo/sport version.

Perhaps, if sales "take off" then that would be considered, but Kia isn't well accepted and known, in my opinion, so I doubt that'll occur.

None the less ... good job to Kia.

korean version honda civic. i hope honda is not buying up kia.

"car's front end strangely resembles the current-generation Honda Civic"

    I agree...

  7. Anonymous » August 25, 2008

I agree with jenny - the front is so similar to the civic, is it so hards to design something original?

  8. Anonymous » August 25, 2008

    It's a fucking KNOCK-OFF....

I think even a MORON can tell....

I wonder what kind of idiots will pay money for those piece of shit??

  9. Anonymous » August 25, 2008

This is not the first to have a Civic front end, Hyundai's i30/Elantra Neos hatachback already has a thick chrome strip grille that looks even more like it's from the Civic.

  10. Jerry Tang » August 25, 2008

    so.....only Hyundai is copying?
why dun you all look at the new Ford KA, its front end is copy from Hyundai i10, the 2007 Mitsubishi i rear view is copying the 1999 Hyundai Atos
and do you see the 2006 Toyota Camry ? is the rear view is as the same of the 1997 Hyundai Sonata?

Honda ... everyone can see the Japan ver. Accord ... is copying from M.Benz E Class side, BMW 7 rear and Hyundai Sonata front !!!!

    design is copying
    just copying smart or not

Anon# What is your deal with Korean cars? All your comments - most of which are deleted due to abusive language- say the same thing over and over again: "F**** Koreans and F**** Kia / Hyundai"

Of course you're entitled to have your own opinion, but is it necessary to use foul language all the time?

It's as if your entire vocabulary starts and ends with the F*** word.
Next time try to make a point. Here’s an idea: how about you explain why the Forte's design is knock-off in your opinion? And by explaining we don’t mean writing F*** word 50 times in a sentence...

  13. Anonymous » August 25, 2008

    Here here.

I can't believe they accept and post his comments.

Grow up and make mature statements. Like John said everyone is entitled to their opinions, and for the most part, readers, like myself, enjoy reading what others have to say, but if you're just going to ramble on F this and F that, that's not an opinion, that's just annoying.

    C'mon man.

  14. Jerry Tang » August 25, 2008

they always use that foul language, because they dn know what can they say , cos they dun find anything wrong in Hyundai and Kia , they just hate Hyundai / Kia, but why they always leave comment here ? for what ? they did what only idiot did , u dun like Korean cars , just get off , dun click into these Korean's page again ! thats good for some idiot and some ppl really like cars

  16. Keith » August 26, 2008

It is a copy of the Civic front lamps but at least it looks better than the Civic. The problem with this design is the glass house - the black plastic at the rear looks really cheap and ugly, making the whole car look like the budget ride it is from the side. Otherwise a commendable effort. This anti-Korean basher should be banned if it were possible, obviously racist and inflammatory, adding nothing to the discussion. A hallmark of this guy is his poor grammar, littered liberally with F words and the sentence structure of a 5 year old. Tip to the guy: Please brush up your English before posting absolute rubbish. Your angry, crude remarks make you the brunt of Carscoop readers' jokes.

Japanese automakers were accused of copying other mfg. designs in the past. No big deal. If it works, why not? Kudos for Kia.

I like Forte's appearance. "We like it, we take it" attitude is allowed nowadays, as everyone could adopt and modify design clues and mash-up their own design = less unique, more generic.
The performance of te engine is still unconfirmed, as nobody has tested it (Dyno'd) independently, but it must be close to the numbers of Hyundai Elantra (New Elantra).

    Here's my take on Forte.

  20. Anonymous » August 26, 2008

no wonder America's economy is crappy now... whole bunch MORONS want to get those freaking KNOCK-OFF from those BULL=CRAP auto maker....

    That's pretty sad....

cover your eyes and say it's not a COPY?! let the ppl telling the truth ok?

  21. Jerry Tang » August 27, 2008

okok.....all auto makers are copying u idiot

they copy other cars that also have 4 wheels
they copy other cars that also have lamps
they copy other cars that also
    have seats

all the ppl will accept that whatever hyundai or M.benz are all copying, ok?

    u are dam right , u idiot!!

This car looks very good inside and out. It is rumored that the US version will have the new 2.0l Theta engine that makes 160hp, and will finally end the production of the 140hp Beta II engine that was in the elantra and spectra. The beta II was a great reliable engine but the new Theta engine makes more power and will also be offered in a turbo version on other future kia and hyundai models. I think kia and hyundai have left their bad rep in the 90's and are just as reliable as any car today. if all you do is bash and hate on korean cars then you probably need to do more research and go test drive one today.

Hmmmm.... it's a fusion of Honda, Toyota and Mitsubishi.... hahahahaha....

The design it very unoriginal but to be honest the car looks great....

  26. J. » September 03, 2008

i dont like the pontiac G6-esque beltline (near the exterior mirrors). it also looks too short. and the front seats look cheap also. and another thing how come in hyundai/kia cars when you don't opt for a higher-end radio its only half of the space, makes you feel like you cant afford anything, but besides that its a good looking dash, honestly it i'll take it over a civic, civic's look too weird for me (dashboard)

Hello, I'm from Greece and here the Hyundai, Kia rank in the first places in sales. They are reliable cars especially for hard use in the traffic congustion in the big city. Not cretided for design awards but quickly pacing up. The car you buy depends on the money you can afford.Expensive cars owe to have sharp looks, where budget cars owe to be economical

    Bring in the Diesel ***

Great looking design, be it a copy or not. I like it better than the Honda. It'll do well.

...as for the guy with the foul language- GROW UP you child...and get a life. Be passionate about something important, rather than an object -after all, in the end it's just a car, a piece of metal on wheels.
There's much more important things in this world to get flipped out over, than a car...things that will truly affect your life, but until you grow up, you will be blind to such things. MAXIMUS IGNORAMUS. Sheesh!

  29. Anonymous » September 04, 2008

AMEN to bringing in the turbodiesel! Also, what happened to the 5-door hatch? Guess all of us 5-door, small wagon fans will have to buy the new Hyundai I-30 wagon (which really looks great - and is just the right size and price).

  30. 70OldsSportsCoupe » September 13, 2008

Or the Kia cee'd, if they ever sell it in the US. I happen to like our '07 Spectra5 very much I acknowledge that it's basically a copy of the Mazda Protege5, but it's a good copy, and cheap to boot. The 5-year warranty is appreciated, (though so far not used much!) as well.

Smart car. Cheap price. Good looking. Geek ready. Many tech gadgets only luxury cars have: USB - ipod, Bluetooth, rear sensors, GPS, etc. A choice for the commnon people who hates traffic, noise or long distances.

Ok lets take the time to be rational here and to realize something, ok well alot of things. The reason that vehicles look alot like other vehicles that are out there on the market is simple. Automakers share there ideas, and don't just use there own designers or engineers in order to create a car. I mean really. Toyota and subaru have come together to design a rear wheel drive sports coupe, and well you know what??? It looks a tone like the KIA KUE concept car. The final designs on this prototype aren't done yet, and you can guarantee that if you took the two cars and placed them next to each other, some wacked out nut who knows crap abou the automotive world and doesn't follow the designs that have been going around, and just follow there favorite manucaturer "aka" HONDA. Will pipe right up and say that Kia is copying the design ideas off of this car and start to spout off as to how Kia is just stealing the design. Another strong point is well GM and Toyota lets see could the Pontiac Vibe resemble any other cars out on the market, HMMMM..... OH!!! the Toyota Matrix. The Vibe was designed by Toyota's engineers. It has the some engine same interior. Like lets face reality here, there are so many different options out there for cars right. It is impossible for every single one to be different and unique.
Not only that but the designers are always switching companies in search of better chances and positions. That being said, just recently KIA just got one of the most influencial minds in the automotive design world. The man responsable for the Audi TT and the A6. This man worked for Audi for years and then on to volkswagon. Now one of the most well known and respected designers is lending his image and his creative mind to Kia motors. This mand is Peter Schreyer. http://www.cardesignnews.com/site/designers/whos_where/display/store4/item45209/
Now a "HONDA NUT" would be saying why would anyone want to do that, but the fact of the matter is that there just insecure and pissed that honda can not seem to get themsevles into the top 5 for the automakers in the world. No matter what they do or how are they try, they always seem to be right behind Hyundai-Kia. Oh ya the new generation civic by the way took styling cues from GM, taking lines and styling from the G6 and the Cobalt. Now all Honda fans will say our concept was out first. But get real and pull your head outta the dirt, everything that honda does just isn't the most unique thing in the world. Oh yes and the Ridgeline they took cues from the Avalanche. Oh and wait a second when you look at the Fit it looks a tone like the 2004 Aveo 5dr. HMMMM. Lets see here i would say the General Motors sure did good designing cars for Honda. But no one ever says anything. Why is this?? Cause its only the "Honda Nuts" that like to point stuff like this out in an attempt to belittle the other manufacturers

    Kia = Hyundai
    Forte = Avante

The whole car looks like an Avante only sharpen. That is where it gets the idea from, even for the front headlights.

I was at the KIA Showroom yesterday. I was driving out of the carpark and I happen to catch a glimpse of one that had just being detailed up. I drove right past when I noticed the badge was plastered with black tape. Just then I remembered the "guesswhatcar" contest. I knew it had to be a KIA.

I have never been a fan of Korean cars, due to its design, performance, engine etc... etc... I'm biased...

But I have to say this, this is the first Korean car that made my head turn and look twice literally...

First glance at Forte: Me like.
Second glance, side view: Me go, "Meh...."
Third glance, back side: Me scratching head.

Final observation: Me don't like so much. BUT...I can see lots of people buying it as an alternative to a Civic if it's priced just right. In this regard, KIA has a winner of their hands. :-)

I thought it looks more like a compact BMW.
If they match with a good engine, I wouldn't mind owning one.

    Looks so sporty!

I was always a fan of the Jap and Conti made cars for many years till I first saw the Hyundai a couple of years back. Was impressed.

Have owned 5 Jap cars and currently a Civic. My wife was looking for a car and Forte happened to launch at the right time. Went to view and test drive the car. My view over Korean cars have an absolute change since then. The Japs is going to have a tough time from now onwards! This Forte is not gonna look a class lower than any Jap made.

A old friend of mine had 2 Kia before and is still currently driving one. His comments: Cheap & Good!

Of course, we booked the Forte in April. Though the design is not something that is very "original", but it does put things together nicely. So nicely that it make a lot of heads turn to look at it. Some even comment that they thought it was a beemer or an audi, and this car has no essence of any Korean look and feel. Nice and handsome are always the words from them.

To those who condemned the Korean cars before, better think twice now.

The reason that this anonymous person uses such foul language is, as you can see he can't spell very well so probably is neurologically challenged and is suffering from cerebral dysfunction due to a ruptured endoplasmic reticulum of the brain cells causing the mitochondria to drain out.

They're still crappy cars, they hope making them look like reliable cars will create sales. Im sure most Americans will see right through this. If you don't beleive they're crappy, look at the broken down cars on the sides of the highway.
