This strange looking minicar is the all-electric GEM Peapod that is scheduled to enter production in 2009. GEM, which stands for GreenEcoMobility, is a small company owned by Chrysler LLC that specializes on electric vehicles (EV). Since its founding in 1998, GEM produced around 38,000 EVs which are primarily used in settings such as city centers, military bases, college campuses and national parks. According to Chrysler, the plug-in Peapod EV features a newly designed center console that will offer iPod integration, as well as hands-free operation of the iPhone while other innovations include supportive, mesh seating, which enables air circulation for comfort and uses eco-friendly recycled and recyclable materials. -Continued
“We have evolved the GEM design language to better reflect its eco-friendly performance and its upbeat, positive image,” said Peter Arnell, Chrysler LLC’s Chief Innovation Officer who led the design process. “These vehicles use no gasoline and emit no pollutants. So whether it’s a trip around the neighborhood or the drive to school or work, the GEM Peapod is the ideal way to contribute to a greener planet, and a healthy lifestyle."
During the presentation of the 4-seat minicar, GEM’s CEO Bruce Coventry said that the Peapod represents the first in a series of product launches that will redefine the future of electric vehicles. The company did not reveal any technical details on the Peapod.

I believe you have the spelling incorrect, as it should be Peepod. Like Chrysler is even going to be around to produce this anomaly.
The closeness of the appearance to the Smart car is no accident. It makes sense that they look almost alike. Diahmler Benz owned Chrysler and Smart. This GEM program existed before Chrysler was sold off by Benz. It's probably one of the many aspects that will connect Chrysler and Benz for many years to come.
Go to Chrysler's Home Page and you will see a huge 300.....nothing has changed.
The small car market is still far down the list for Detroit.
They need a complete change of Management to wake them up!
Mac
Holy! It looks like an aliens scull.
Let's see... first, we'll have Chrysler take a number and get in line for their bailout - only 50 or maybe 25 BILLION (and with that money they will be able to afford to have surgery to have their heads pulled out of their asses!)... then they'll give this car a short range and a low top speed... and then they'll charge 30 or 40 thousand for it SO NO ONE WILL BUY IT... and then finally Chrysler will be able to tell us that nobody in the USSA wants electric cars!
Wow.. I can definitely see it now...
All of America buys these Peapods... and INSTANTLY....
... we no longer need nueclear weapons for war....
We just get hit with Electromagnetic Pulse burst nation wide... and all our electronic world goes... KAPUT!
The GEM isn't new at all. It's been around for 10 years. I've been driving one for 2 years. This is just a new design. See http://www.gemcar.com for the current design.
I like my 06 300C
GEORGE
It was on the Today show this morning. It only goes 25mph with a price tag of $12,500.
WTF? For that amount of money I can buy a car that I can actually drive around town. With this I would have to go from neighborhood to neighborhood so I wouldn't hold up traffic. By the time I got to where I need to go the battery would be dead.
If it went 40, then I'd totally consider it.
