Insider: VW to Unveil Golf GTI VI in Paris

|
Continuing our 'Tour de Paris', we have just received word from our European inside sources that along with the more humble versions of the sixth generation Golf, VW will also take the wraps off the highly-anticipated 2009 Golf GTI at the Paris motorshow. Unfortunately we weren’t able to obtain any official information (or unofficial for that matter) on the GTI’s powertrain options. Most likely, the range-topping Golf will get the latest version of the VW Group’s 2.0-liter turbocharged TFSI engine channeled through a six-speed manual or the highly acclaimed DSG dual-clutch semi-automatic transmission.

I had an 06 GTI MK V and sold it to get an 07 Porsche Boxster. I am not keeping the Boxster due to current economics and am waiting for the Mk VI GTI...others considered are the o9 MINI Cooper S and the upcoming Honda CRZ. The 06 GTI was well made with a high quality interior and during the 13k miles I owned it it was trouble free. It was fast but didnt handle as well as the 2002 Mini Cooper S I also owned due to weightdifference. I am not sure if the handling will be improved as it seemed to need even tighter sway bars. I heard the current Mk V's have a slightly lowered suspension. My advice keep the price low, tighten the handling and I would go for the MK VI over the others mentioned. The MINI can get expensive quickly. The GTI comes fairly well equipped even without any options so the value is good as well. Honda will be trying to add a AMV ( adjusted market value ) to the CRZ I'm sure. Just MHO. KJS
