Jeep Wrangler EV HybridThe Jeep EV is one of three electric-drive prototype models revealed today (see here) by Chrysler LLC. Unlike the Dodge EV that is equipped with an all-electric drivetrain, Jeep’s proposal that is based on the 5door Wrangler Unlimited features a hybrid system similar to the one used by GM on the Chevrolet Volt. What this means is that the Jeep EV uses an electric motor, a lithium-ion battery system, and a small gasoline engine with an integrated electric generator to produce additional energy to power the electric-drive system when needed. -Continued

Jeep Wrangler EV HybridThe electric motor generates an output of 200 kW (268 HP) and 400 Nm (295 lb.-ft.) of torque. Chrysler supports that with approximately eight gallons or about 31 liters of gasoline, the Jeep EV has a range of 400 miles, including 40 miles of zero fuel-consumption, zero-emissions, all-electric operation. As for performance, the Jeep EV sprints from zero to 60 mph (96 mph) in 9.0 seconds and on to a top speed of more than 90 mph or 145 km/h.

Chrysler officials said that along with the Jeep EV’s hybrid drivetrain, the company’s engineers are also exploring an advanced system with in-wheel electric motors that will offer the Wrangler EV a four-wheel-drive configuration.

Cool concept! I hope they would plan to offer a Rubicon edition, complete with differential locks, ultra-low transfer case gearing, disconnecting swaybar, and easy addition of lift kits, rock sliders, bumpers, and other off-road accessories.

I have been waiting to see if Jeep was creating an EV or hybrid and now I am so glad to see they do! I have been a huge supporter of Jeep and didn't want to turn to a different brand due to fuel economy and Eco friendly-ness. I will definately get this car when it hits the market.

WHY? Aerodynamic as a BRICK, rides like a truck, butlooks COOL. This is a perfect vehicle for stylestas to drive to High School In their North Face jackets and Diesel Jeans.

Who in their right mind would take a hybrid off road? True off road ability is dependent on reliability not economy.

    More PR Crap.

For years I've been wanting to get a jeep but they never update their engines, for example their 3.7 liter v6 must be over a decade old.
Plus the fact that a 4 cylinder engine has more HP than their v6's means their engines aren really efficient hence the poor mpg ratings of like 12mpg to 20mpg...
most people buy jeeps because of offroad capability is second to none, but when gase prices hit the sky...if they dont move on to new tehchnology and more effient engines, they will be a thing of the past...I'm glad they "FINALLY" decide to do something worthwhile.
I still think they coulda done better in the looks department..um I mean make it look more futuristic
    and better water proof materials.
I understand jeep wants the nostalgic looks but there are better ways to make it look futuristic and still keep the jeep look!!Some of us would be happy to design a new look if jeep will make use of It!

Offroad ability with electric would be excellent! Their 4cyl engines have been poor at best over the years, the V-6s offered have been so-so. The 4.0l straight 6 was a powerhouse and loaded with torque.

This is definitely a step in the right direction. I would buy one providing they are affordable. Great for the backroads, and trails while still getting me to work.

I think this could be just as, if not more reliable than all of the others Jeeps.

Who would take a hybrid off road? The U.S. military...check out their Shadow concept vehicle that will replace or complement the Humvee.

Give me a diesel electric set up with in hub electric motors and it could not be stopped.

Do not let this slip by, Jeep people.

I've owned a Jeep since I was in high school (now 50). If, by the time I'm ready for another, Jeep doesn't have a viable fuel-efficient, off road vehicle, I've been thinking I'd have to move to a Toyota. At least this is moving in the right direction. Maybe I won't have to change my preference afterall. We can only hope.

Got to be a 4WD option from the start or it is doomed to not do well.

If they build this 4 door hybrid wrangler I am all over it. Just what I want to see out of Jeep!
