2010 Mazda3 SedanToday, Mazda fully revealed the second-generation Mazda3 Sedan at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The new compact sedan that will be followed shortly after by a five-door hatchback variant will go on sale worldwide in early 2009. Even though it is apparent that the new Mazda3 retains a similar shape as the current model, the Japanese automaker refreshed the design by adding styling elements from its latest models and especially from the Mazda6 and the RX-8. The result is a more aggressively styled sedan that won't go by unnoticed.

2010 Mazda3 SedanInside, the family-resemblance with other Mazda models is also evident with the Japanese firm supporting that the cabin has been further refined in term of quality and materials. Among other features, the Mazda3 sports a three-spoke steering wheel, a deep instrument cluster and a Multi-Information Display system which is positioned high on the center portion of the dashboard providing navigation, audio, and trip computer information.

The North American-spec model will be offered initially with two naturally aspirated, 4-cylinder engines. The entry-level "Mazda3 i" is powered the same 2.0-liter engine as before that develops 148HP at 6500 rpm and 135 lb-ft of torque at 4500 rpm. The more powerful "Mazda3 s" replaces the previous 156HP 2.3-liter unit with the larger 2.5-liter engine from the 2009 Mazda6. It cranks out 167HP at 6000 rpm and 168 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm.

A five-speed manual transmission is standard in the "Mazda3 i",
while the "Mazda3 s" is equipped with a six-speed stick-shift transmission. A five-speed electronically controlled Sport-AT automatic transmission is available in both models - the outgoing Mazda3 2.3 was fitted with a 4-speed auto.

2010 Mazda3 SedanThe Japanese automaker said that the "Mazda3 i" with its 2.0-liter engine achieves 25 mpg in city driving with the manual transmission and 24 mpg with the automatic. The highway mileage with the 2.0-liter engine is 33 mpg with either transmission. The "Mazda3 s" is rated at 20 mpg in all conditions (avg). Equipped with the six-speed manual transmission, its city rating is 21 mpg, rising to 22 mpg with the 5-speed automatic. The highway rating is 29 mpg with either transmission.

While Mazda has yet to announce pricing or details on the new 3's equipment levels, the company did not that all versions will be fitted with six airbags and active head restraints as standard.

The front of this care has a huge smile. It's almost laughing! Would I want to drive that is laughing at everyone?

Why oh why did Mazda put that ghastly gaping smile on the front?! It reminds me of those horribly styled new Peugeots.. Interior is rather nice, although it retains another annoying Mazda characteristic - tiny fonts on a tiny LCD screen in the centre console.

Sad shape of direction Mazda has chosen lately. I agree with the front end of this car, appears to be laughing? Maybe at the fool to purchase it? Mazda is so close on many occasions to offer what we need, but end up failing in the end. The CX7, turbo 4 cylinder, going well, but only 23 mpg? Most V6's can do that. How about a 2.5, 170 hp, 4 cylinder, and that 6 speed auto, maybe 27-29 mpg? The Mazda6, looked great in the rest of the world, but in America, lets super size it? Stretched it out of its sexiness, and right out of my garage slot. Now they give us the Joker Mobile?

That is one big Mazda smile.

Holy grinning idiot, Bat Man! That maniac mobile is gaining on us!

At 4590mm, the new Mazda 3 is simply too big.

Seems like the front overhang is also too long, are we witnessing this new Mazda's handling capabilities getting worse ?

So sad manufacturers no longer provide us a good size and proper wt. small and fun sedan like the G20/P11 anymore.

It’s difficult to fillfull everyone’s expectative, I think it accomplish at least 95% of the people’s expectative. In my case, I was already in love with the previous Mazda3, and now, I’m crazy in love with it. I will buy it, no matter what happens, I don’t care about any other car. He’s the only one that makes me feel happy and I haven’t bought it, but I will.

I think that Mazda designs are generally nice but this is just unbelievably ugly. Can't shake off that Joker smile look and the gaps on the side look like alongside the big mouth the face has two holes near the cheeks.

I doen't see anything ugly with this new model.
yet another great innovative design from Mazda.
if mazda can come with a speed version of this sedan, will be gtreat.

Wow! What can you say about that grille? To much 'Boy Racer' for me (New 2009 MX-5 Miata similarly effected). Hope it translates better in the flesh. Nice rear end treatment. Could do without that Civic dash blip. Last edition Mazda3 was a very well executed design for a small sedan/hatch.

Anticipation: Mazda got the RX-8 to be used in the X-Men film. They must be aiming for a role in a comming Disney film or Pokemon film. Because, all it needs to be modified is to have it paint yellow, and 1. make the side-mirrors larger. 2. put a arrow-looking like ear parts on the front top of the roof.
It's the only explanation that makes sence.
No offence, I pretty much like it, as a character car provided I'm not going to be in that show.

Seriously speeking, just a tad miss shot. Mazda did a great job on Mazda6, excluding the size made larger. Like someone above said, Mazda mostly works so much at the corner of the strike zone, and they aim too much that the umpire calls a ball. Just a bit more location and they wont have to go back and forth between the big leagues and 3A.
One more thing, please work on fuel efficiency in any style of power unit, and do it fast, please.

Who the heck thought of putting that dumb smile on the new Mazda? It looks ridiculous. Mazda probably realized their error too late and so are promoting it by trying to make you think that it is hip.
