New Buick Excelle for China: Rebadged Opel Astra Debuts at Auto Guangzhou 2009

|
The 'Opel-azation' of Buick continues in China with the introduction of the all-new Excelle that made its premiere at the Auto Guangzhou 2009 motorshow. In the same way that the domestic market Buick Regal is based on the Insignia, the compact-sized Excelle is a rebadged 2010 Opel Astra with a different grille treatment.

At launch, the five-door model will be offered in China with a choice of three gasoline units, the naturally aspirated 1.6-liter and 1.8-liter D-VVTs and a 1.6-liter turbocharged four.

The hatchback version of the Excelle will most likely be joined later on by a four-door sedan model.

I got sick of "badge-engineering"

Don't be dumb nothing is wrong with badge engineering if you are not selling the same car in the same MARKET! Duhhh. And if you are so sick of it then you better call every other car manufacturer!

"I got sick of "badge-engineering""

It's either this, or a costly bespoke platform for just one brand.

Badge engineering for every automaker is here to say, sadly.

gm owns daewoo. daewoo is just a brand name now.

Besides, the delta platform was done by the opel arm.

The "Buick Astra", I presume? Hope it comes to America, Buick needs to compete directly with Lexus once their hatch arrives.

Super hatches make sedans a difficult choice.

Now this is a Buick I would buy. Sure makes the Mazda 3 look ugly by comparison.

lol gm will bring it here to the usa 4 years from now after it is outdated and then ask itself, why didn't it sell good...

Why why why? They RUINED the styling with that grille! The car looks just fine as an Opel/Vauxhall Astra but OMG that grille on this Buick version is ATROCIOUS r u i n s the whole car!

Matt J, this is based on the German Opel Astra, not the new Korean Daewoo Lacetti aka Chevy Cruze.

They use a common GM Delta platform, but one is German and one is Korean, this happens to be based on the German design.

This isn't based on the Opel/Vauxhall Astra, it IS the Astra. Like the Buick Regal coming in 2010, which is an Opel/Vauxhall Insignia, GM oughta get this to US Buick dealers pronto. As reported here, they are in such a hurry (GM! In a hurry! Unlike in past Euro adoption schemes as referred to in a post above where the cars were alomost ready to be replaced in Europe by the time the Americanized version got here) that the first months of the Regal will really be Insignias made in Germany with Buick grills, steering wheels, and a couple of badges. The round Buick badge even conveniently exactly replaces the round Opel badge.

emjayay is correct, this is the Opel/Vauxhall Astra, new design and not related to the Daewoo at all. This new design replaces the old Opel Astra H design which made it's way to US shores in 2008 (only year)under the Saturn badge. The new design never saw US soil, but IMO Buick should grab this one up and bring it here. I own an Astra and it surpasses in quality most of the cr*ppy compact and midsize cars sold here in the US.
