SEMA 2009: HPP Builds Dodge Challenger Daytona Concept

|
Back in the late 1960's, Dodge developed the Charger Daytona race car to compete in NASCAR but to comply with the rules, they also had to build at least 500 copies to sell to the public and thus was born the Charger Daytona, the most outrageous musclecar of the time. Taking a step back into the good old days, the guys over at Heide Performance Products created the modern day successor to the road-legal racer with the Dodge Challenger-based Daytona concept that was shown at this week's SEMA.

The concept model gets all the design features that made the original Daytona look special such as the 'mile-high' rear wing, the elongated front nose piece, the hood scoops and the front fender trims.

Other highlight of the Dodge Challenger Daytona include the Vortech supercharged 5.7-liter V8 engine that should be good for around 600 horsepower or more, the KW Automotive sport suspension and the Magnaflow sport exhaust system.

Seriously, WTF? I mean to anyone who actually lived those years I'm getting sick and tired of the rehashes that do the original no justice, and that includes the new Challenger.

Challenger even in the 1970's= too short and wide.
Charger = long, flat, skinny...

Not that impressive, it could use another round of development. I am sure there are tons of people that would love this though.

The second to the last picture is no Dodge at all...HINT: it's a Bavarian with 450hp ;)

It's funny, the original superbirds had that wing so high to allow the truck to open - nothing aerodynamic related.

I agree with Anonymous! If Dodge is going to make a new version of one of there 60’s and 70’s muscle cars they should do a much better job. Like the Charger. Does that car look anything at all like the old Charger?? Hell no not one bit!! Nice Mopar but Do Not call it a Charger. Then there’s the Challenger. Good try Chrysler but no cigar boys. Close but Nope. Look at the new Ford Mustang. Now that car looks like an old Mustang. Coming at you or going away from you on the road it’s hard to tell it’s a new one. Why can’t Chrysler do this. I’d like to see a New A-Body Machine.

We're living in 2009, not in 1970!
Try something else.

You guys are all wrong. Purists drive me crazy. The car looks good no matter what they name it. I can appreciate the old & the new. Actually, the original Daytona's were freakishly long. This version is much more proprtioned. Go drive a hybrid!

The mustang bares as much resemblance to it's late 60's/70's brother as much as the Challenger, I look at the Challenger of 2008 and see a CHALLENGER but with the Modern updated look. If you think it bares no resemblance then go buy a 1970 challenger.

BTW it's not the Charger Daytona, it's the Roadrunner Superbird!!!
