Swedish carmaker Volvo has popped the covers off its new S60 sedan that will make its first public outing at the Geneva Salon in March 2010 with production and sales set to start in early summer of the same year. Albeit toned down a notch, the exterior design of the production model has remained incredibly close to the concept model that appeared at this January's Detroit Show retaining its sloping, coupe-like roofline and curvy waistline as well as the distinct front-end styling.

While Volvo has yet to release any photos of the interior, it is believed that the styling will again be influenced, though to a much less degree, by the concept model's cabin featuring a same shape dashboard.

Contrary to its predecessor that was awkwardly positioned between the BMW 3- and 5-Series, the new S60 is sized and designed to compete directly against the smaller bimmer and the Audi A4 in the small executive sedan segment.

Underneath the sheetmetal, the 2011 S60 uses a variation of Ford's EUCD platform that underpins cars like Volvo's own S80 and the European Mondeo and S-MAX / Galaxy.

No technical details were disclosed, but Volvo promises that the new S60 will be more driver orientated that its predecessor.

"The all-new Volvo S60 is sculpted to move you. It looks and drives like no other Volvo before and the car's technology will help you to be safer and more confident behind the wheel," says Stephen Odell, President and CEO of Volvo Cars.

The new sedan is expected to be offered with a variety of gasoline and diesel engines including Ford's new EcoBoost 1.6-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine featuring turbocharging, direct injection and outputs ranging from 150 to 180 horsepower.

Among other highlights will be a new Pedestrian Detection system that can detect pedestrians in front of the car and brake automatically if the driver does not react in time.

Very nice shape...except for the whole front. The front overhang is too long, the shape of grille, headlights and air inlets seems to be random to me and there isn't a hint of harmony among them.

    What???
    the car or the husband????

  14. Anonymous » November 11, 2009

??? ...All, this fuss over a rather Squishy, Bland design. Volvo's need balls not limp curves and a weak attitude.

Wonder what her husband really looks and acts like?

I apologize for my opinion... just couldn't help myself ...LOL!

great car! this and the xc60 will lead volvo to a new generation of cars. I dont think that the front looks that bad at all, in fact, it looks pretty daring...am I right?

Sagging front end and headlights that look fairly ordinary and bland. The whole front end doesnt have even a hint of originality in it,body shape on the other hand is pleasing to the eye, and it's a pretty decent attempt overall though.

Virile design, tender and quality-oriented amber metalic color, and high-efficiency units make the new Volvo S60 a small yet precious jewel.
She'll become a formidable contender to the Audi A4,the Mercedes C200K,the Citroen C5,and the Lexus IS250,I hope so.

seeing this car in high resolution makes a HUGE difference, so if you think that the front is sagging and out of place then you're in for a surprise!!

this is more impressive than my audi A4!!! I was planning on getting another car, perhaps a c class benz for my wife but I'l really have to reconsider. she always wanted an xc60 in a sedan shape, so I think this will do the trick :)

I want this car-plain and simple

  23. Anonymous » November 16, 2009

To the dude who says that S60 is the most beautiful car ever made: Stop the drugs you re on, it messes badly with your head.

The headlights design is ripped off the new Mercedes. Definitely the Chinese way of making cars.

  26. Anonymous » November 24, 2009

Very nice looking car, except that the interior still looks snug.

  27. Anonymous » November 26, 2009

    holy!!!
that is one hell of a car. volvo is on a role, good for them!! the whole econ. depression thing really hasnt changed volvo's marketing strategy, or a lot of their goals, this shows determination and good product :)

  28. Anonymous » November 26, 2009

the interior has ot to be bittchin!!!

  29. Anonymous » November 28, 2009

yeah, I heard from the blind guy that the center stack will be symmetrical? what about the concept's centre stack? nothing similar

  30. Anonymous » November 29, 2009

    hot

  31. Anonymous » November 29, 2009

I cant imagine that there's much from the concept thats going into the interior....nothing except the steering wheel and a few buttons

  32. Anonymous » December 04, 2009

Nice design improvement compared to "nothing changed past 8 years" S lines. But with that kind of engine performance, there is no way they can compete bmw and audi.

    not necessarily
