2012 Hyundai Veloster: First Spy Shots of Hyundai's CR-X-esque Small FWD Coupe

|
A South Korean forum member has posted these spy shots of what clearly looks like the production version of Hyundai's hotly anticipated Veloster that will in some way replace the Tiburon, aptly known as the Coupe in Europe and other markets.

There are only two shots of the car, but from what we can tell, it appears that Hyundai Motor America's CEO John Krafcik wasn't exaggerating when he told Inside Line this past summer that the production model will look 70-80 per cent like the 2007 Veloster Concept.

The small front-wheel drive coupe, which has been described by Krafcik as a "4-passenger Honda CR-X", is scheduled to go on sale at Hyundai's dealerships alongside the larger and more expensive rear-wheel drive Genesis Coupe before the end of 2011.

Krafcik has revealed that the production model, which may very well retain the Veloster nameplate, will be powered by a new 1.6-liter four cylinder engine with direct injection pushing out 140 hp. It is expected that the base model will return over 40 mpg US (5.8lt/100km or 48mpg UK).

There's a strong possibility that Hyundai may also offer the Veloster with either a turbocharged variant of the 1.6L engine or the firm's 2.0-liter GDI petrol that develops 198HP in the new Sonata. Europeans could also get a diesel version of the Veloster.

Guess Honda will soon be kicking themselves for not making a gasoline version of the CR-Z

This is rather good! I think Honda might have to rethink their CR-Z a little bit.

So, why is that every time HYUNDAI make something, all the trolls come out of their caves and start looking for any cars that looks "perhaps similar" to it so they can say Hyundai ripped off of others? Hyundai spends more resources, both money, time, and engineering more than any other non-luxury automakers on the planet. (sometimes alot more.. like 2011 Hyundai Sonata's 400 million dollar development cost vs 250 million Toyota Camry) Quit the mindless bashing and enjoy the automaker for what they stand for.

Remember the movie with Tom Hanks "The money Pit" ? That was the same thing when I bought a Ford ! Wife's Hyundai XG30 in seven years has only had an alternator, and my Elantra has only needed a sparkplug wire.Travel to countries like Cuba,Tanzania,Mongolia ect and Hyundai cars are everywhere,Toyota seems to be going the same way as Ford as a RAV4 in our family needs brake disks and drums at only 30k miles

I agree with John. Why some people never think that it can be the other way round:other automakers might be ripping off Hyundai hardworking efforts? Hyundai is really really spending a lot of money on their model line-up. I admire Hyundai for being so attentive to every details. Hyundai spend about 300million on Tucson2010 too. it is truly amazing and I am sure should Hyundai continue this momentum, they will easily outperform Toyota in just 5years. Love Hyundai lolz

Yeah, I agree with John too. I see other cars with 'potential copying', but they are not ripped apart. All cars look similar if you want to be that anal.

Hyundai deserves nothing but credit imo for their current quality cars, because they are veryyy good now. To be honest I really don't see any competition for them when you consider excellent quality with low price. The only potential problem is the branding, stemmed down from the early 80s, but people need to wake up to modern times!
