New Alfa Romeo Giulietta with up to 235HP: First Official Photos [Updated]

|
*Update: Alfa Romeo has officially announced that the car's name is 'Giulietta'

After many bizarre events including a series of factory spy shots and more recently, a squabble with the current and former employees of the Italian firm's Milan plant that led to a last minute decision to drop the 'Milano' name, Alfa Romeo has finally published the first official image of its new compact hatchback that will replace the 147 and compete in the all-important C-segment in Europe.

Even though there have been rumors about the use of the 'Giulietta' name, the Italians have yet to announce something official.

However, there's still some time left to choose a name as the compact hatch won't be fully revealed until the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010.

The 147's replacement, which will be made only as a five-door model, is based on the Fiat Group's new C-Evo platform that will also be used in future Chrysler and Dodge products.

Measuring in at 4,350mm in length, 1,460 mm in height and 1,800 mm in width, with a wheelbase of 2,630mm, the new compact hatch is slightly longer, taller and wider than the current 147. It also features a boot capacity of 350 liters.

When it arrives in Alfa's showrooms in spring next year, the hatch will initially be offered with a choice of two petrol and two diesel engines, all turbocharged.

The range will include the 1.4-liter TB and 1.4-liter TB Multiair petrol units with 120HP and 170HP respectively, and the 1.6-liter JTDM and 2.0-liter JTDM diesels with 105HP and 170HP respectively.

Later in the year, Alfa Romeo will introduce a sportier version wearing the "Quadrifoglio Verde" (four-leaf clover) badge to compete against the VW Golf GTI and Renault Megane RS. The QV will be powered by a 1.7-liter (1,750cc) four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine delivering an output of 235 horsepower.

Nice try but Astra & mi-to better.

Absolutely useless comment above. This car is lovely.

A round backlight would be better (like on Mi-To).

i think they should soften the angle on the grill a bit. it looks too much like a skull which is a little creepy. the back end is too soft looking. styling on this car is definitely not very cohesive.

Same. the front triangled logo is too different from the front style, the front lamp are too much big and in external position, the back lateral area is too much light and do not give enphasis to the body ( as 147 and BmW 1 do ) and also it need of a line that divide the lateral view of the car as the door has too much planar surface. the shape of bravo is too much evident in this car. Better the 147 and the Astra draw. At the end also the front bumper is too much elaborated for the medium customer of this brand. It was necessary something more smart and leave this front bumper to sport versions. It doesn't beat the heart of customer in my opinion as 147 did.
(Sorry for my bad english)

It's a bit different from these pictures, I think you took the pictures of a prototype. However it's very similar, differences are some details.

I don't care much for the "hidden rear door handle" look. If they're gonna hide door handles, they need to hide them all for a more balanced look. No one will look at this car and think it's a coupe...

More successful design than the MiTo, and knowing how poor the MiTo looked in pictures and how much better it looks on the road, this could be the making of quite a nice looking car.

Are we totally sure that the new photos didn't come once again as spy shots, captured from the so called camera of a mobile phone, the same I guess just like it happened last time?...
Hmmm it seems that those spy shots did achieve their goal, they were accurate and provocative.
Or perhaps it should have been all the sudden changes in the 147's successor which have helped too, but the result is disappointing despite of all the efforts made to convince for the opposite.

The entry-midsize(C-segment) Alfa Romeo, the Giulietta seems handsome and well-engineered,yet upcoming small Chrysler sharing same platform with it would dilute her exclusiveness,I'm afraid.

altough, the new 149 sports similarity to Fiat Bravo... it's still a nice looking Italian car!

the interior has some nice lines to bring out Alfa sportiness in the car.

i feel that overall the car is a beauty... particulary the rear (even though some said it looks soft).

honestly, i can't wait to get my hands to test drive it!

Nicely sculpted distinctive looks. You know it's and Alfa.

Bring it to the North America... it will sell and apparently Alfa needs to sell cars.

Sergio Marchionne has let all the management for brands under the Fiat/Chrysler umbrella know, that have to justify their existence... This was aimed particularly at Alfa Romeo. Is Alfa's continued existence in jeopardy?

I personally would have done it differently - rear lights the same but without the circles, the front lights either in a double headlamp design similar to the triple system on the 159, or at least have put less gap between the lights and grill. Pretty car though, very!

Alfa should get back to it's true origins with the entire platform shifting back to rear wheel drive, as this is the true 'core' element of Alfa Romeo. I can't believe that a company with such a rich and pure racing pedigree switched to front wheel drive! Had Alfa Romeo persisted with rear wheel drive, they could now be claiming to have "The Ultimate Driving Machines" instead of BMW.

As they currently stand, their cars will unfortunately always miss that last 10% which is a great shame because the audio/visual sensations you get with Alfa is always spectacular, the Guilietta looks like it will continue with 'eye candy' looks and style that only the Italians seem to deliver year after year after year, their cars looks stunning today, beautiful tomorrow and spectacular when they are old enough to be considered classics. It's a little odd because the passion is alive and well but one of the fundamental elements that mechanicaly balances a car is missing. Alfa Romeo and rear wheel drive should always go hand in hand.
