Pony Wars: 2011 Ford Mustang GT gets a New 412-Horsepower 5.0-liter V8

|
Following a supposed leak on Facebook and twitter, several outlets and blogs such as Inside Line and Autoblog, which had already been tipped off under-the-table by FoMoCo, confirmed that the 2011 Mustang GT will get a new 5.0-liter V8 engine delivering a respectable 412 ponies. The new powerplant will replace the Neolithic 4.6-liter V8 unit with its pathetic -for an engine of this size and this era- output of 315-horsepower.

In comparison, the 2010 Chevy Camaro SS gets a 426HP 6.2-liter V8 while the 2010 Dodge Challenger SRT8, a 6.1-liter Hemi V8 with 425 ponies.

Do the math, and Ford's V8 makes 82.4 HP per liter, GM's V8 churns out 68.7 HP per liter and Chrysler's Hemi, 69.7 HP per liter.

Unless Ford plans to hold back until the year 2020 and surprise our kids the next generation of Mustang owners, we assume that, unlike the current GT which gets 5-speed transmissions, the new V8 engine will be coupled to 6-speed gearboxes in both manual and automatic forms.

We remind you that at last month's LA Auto Show, FoMoCo unwrapped the 2011 Mustang V6 with a new 3.7-liter six-cylinder engine producing 305-horsepower.

woohooo! the return of the 5.0 mustang!

Anonymous said... »December 17, 2009

The five-oh returns!! Boo-ya!

Also, hp-per-L is ricer math and doesn't show anything as specific output decreases as displacement increaces...especally when it still doesn't match the output of the ls3.

Been there done that. My 2000MY Honda S2000 gets 120 hp per liter. Hell, Honda's 1990's 1.6 liter VTEC returned 100 hp for every liter

who is the guy(wt* lmao) in the pic that is burning out? Great job FoMoCo, 5.0!

Yeah v8 is not really that great. To many V6 cars that can straight up beat a v8 in a drag but the one thing i wish v6 had was that roar a v8 produces that is definitely worth it. But aside from that ill take a v6 which is a bit more comforting. But dam nice power boost by Ford. To bad it way to late. Imagine all the angry people who just got a v6 or v8.

HondaBoy I'll ask you one simple question. How many torque do all honda got? Its not all about HP per liter calculated there. The reason the liter is low to achieve that HP is because of it only produce none the less 120 tq????

Mustang has alot of torque compared to your honda's, I know honda engines are high rev engines. but muscle cars has instant power and torque on the wheel on initial low rpm!

Wow! Long-awaited genuine "muscle Mustang" has arrived! Her 412bhp/5.0-litres V8 would post 1/4mile sprint in below 13sec,under good condition, considering previous GT V8's time of around 13.5sec(whether stick-shift or automatic). If so,she's the very "bargain-priced Mercedes E550 Coupe" as well as "BMW M6 for hoi-polloi"!
In Japan,my country, previous 315bhp-powered Mustang GT is currently sold for $55000(without registration fee),as dear as the Lexus IS350(my own car) and the VW Passat 3.2. But her acceleration is rather mundane for a 4.6-litres V8(similar performance as the Jaguar XK 5.0/XF 5.0),respectable yet hardly a fire-cracker. If the sensational 412bhp(306kW) Mustang GT is sold for below $60000,she's a unique choice as "a Maserati Grand-Turismo pace for a VW Scirocco R tariff"!

hondaboy, all you honda's power sucks, all the power comes after 6000-6500 RPM.

janist said... »December 18, 2009

yes but honda dose it whit a turbo.
if you put a supercharger kit for 1500 eur on this mustang you can get more then 610lb-ft of torque and 600hp.

Welcome to 2002 Ford!! About time!!!

2011!!!?

With the Camaro selling at (4 to 1) against the Mustang the past six months, Ford had to do something to grab back some attention and sales, but apparently are in no rush to add more content for the dollar. The soul-less Ford Bean counters sure are happy though.

At 82.4 HP per liter (Which is automotive engineering language) it is still reasonably low stressed and has some room left to play around with, but not as much room as the faux Hemi and new 'Small Block' Chevy.

Reg; "but honda dose it whit a turbo."

Honda has never relied on external pressure to motivate their production cars offered here in the US. I'm also unaware of any pressurized production models offered anywhere else.

As for the unfair Tariffs applied to American products in Japan (And elsewhere), we need to petition Congress to stop so called 'Free Trade'. Americans need to start building products again and to do that we need to level the playing field with Tariffs. We already have many tariffs on the books, but they are not enforced, costing us jobs.

This isn't 'Flag Waving' it's reality, it's 'Fair Trade'. We need to get back to producing quality products that have a fighting chance against subsidized foreign imports. We need the 'Option' of buying a quality American product versus a quality foreign product.

The US already produces quality automobiles, I'm really talking about TV's, appliances, computers, clothing, etc. and to do that we need to apply tariffs that work for those lost industries and us, not corporate profits for a few with so called 'Free Trade'.

The corporations are trying to enslave/indenture the American worker by taking away your jobs and making you suffer so bad you will work for anything. Stopping 'Universal Health Care' almost ensures that, by making us less competitive to those countries that have it so it's not added to the cost of their products.

Spend some of the energy you use to view and comment on blogs and call your congress person and tell them to enforce our tariffs, support unions, and bring the US into the modern world with Universal Health Care.

goddamn ricer guy makes the rest of us honda guys look completely ignorant and starts a flamewar...

i have an s2000 also but i applaud ford (or any other manufacturer regardless of country of origin) for FINALLY seeing the light that their prior engine was badly outdated.

now... about that rear suspension...

wow sweet mustang! nothing like the sound of a v8 - s2k cr owner

Anonymous said... »December 19, 2009

who would have thought a bunch of s2k guys liked mustangs? ha ha ha... wonder if mustang guys respect an s2000 in turn?

I can't even speak!

You nailed it right on the head!

Anonymous said... »December 20, 2009

No point in getting upset over comments like Hondaboy's He's trolling for abuse but I suspect in true "hondaboy" fashion, there are no balls attached to that mighty e-penis, just delusions of grandeur for which his equally egregious ricer mates will respect him. YEah, way to go man...

HondaBoy said... »December 20, 2009

What can I say, some of you guys think Honda uses turbo to achieve high outputs from its engines. Maybe in another 20 years Ford will make a Mustang that actually turns, weighs less than a truck and doesn't need a 5 liter engine to be fast. By then Honda will probably be making cars that fly

Anonymous said... »December 20, 2009

Hondaboy,
You shouldn't say anything at all actually. It's quite obvious you're not here to speak intelligently, you're just posting to antagonize people, impugn their choice for liking Mustangs and to flaunt your ignorance. Your points about Honda's power making abilities aren't in question, just your intelligence. You're lacking in that department.

I don't believe that the new Camaro has any place in this article. As well as the Mustang has been maintained in design, feel, and power, I am ashamed for Chevy at the look and revitalization of the Chevy Camaro.
