Peugeot SR1 Hybrid Roadster Showcases New Design Language, Marks the end of Gaping-Mouth Grille Era

|

This here is the Peugeot SR1 hybrid 2+1 seater roadster concept that will be displayed for the first time at the upcoming 2010 Geneva Salon in March. The significance of the SR1 lies in its styling as the French automaker revealed that it foretells the stylistic design trends for its future models.

In short, this concept car showcases the firm's new design language that abandons the chunky shapes and the much criticized gaping-mouth grille of the current Peugeots in favor of more elegant and sharper looks that hark back to the Pininfarina-era Pugs.

The concept itself, which bears a passing resemblance to Aston Martin's Vantage V8, is a proposal for a low-slung roadster model with a hybrid powertrain.

The SR1's interior, is pure concept though we might see the driver-orientated center console making its way into Peugeot's future production models. The roadster can seat up to three in a 2+1 layout with the rear seat mounted centrally.

The roadster makes use of Peugeot's HYbrid4 technology, which will be available in the company's 3008 crossover from 2011. A front-mounted 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a power output of 218 bhp is combined with a rear electric motor developing 95 bhp.

When the two power trains work simultaneously, the SR1 develops a potential maximum power of 313bhp and also benefits from four-wheel drive.

Peugeot said that in electric only mode, the car becomes a Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV), with a combined cycle fuel consumption of 4.9 lt/100km (48.0mpg US) and CO2 emissions of just 119 g/km.

The concept model also benefits from the adoption of 4-wheel steering with the turning angle of the rear wheels controlled as a function of the vehicle speed, via motorized links on the rear wishbones.

Vive le France! Always hated the new Pugs, this one looks promising

this thing here just BLOWS my mind!! amazing, Peugeot can really look cool when they want to...

Finally, a Peugeot worth owning? Dream on...it's only a concept model.

Hey,Peugeot is back in the business of making automobiles and not angry looking kitchen appliances on wheels!

The design definitely looks forward to the future and back to the Pinifarina days. The 4WS is funny since it's a technology that Renault brought back a couple of years ago with the Laguna which itself has a slight resemblence to Aston Martin. The previous Citroen design chief now in charge of both design groups seems to have brough a very cool design approach that is different from Citroen. Check out the mirrors, they look like they are attached to the hood... Pretty cool

Renault didn't bring back 4ws, they stole it from nissan that has been using it for 25 years.

Looks very promising. Finally it looks like Peugeot is getting back on the right track which is not that difficult when you see what they brought on the market the last several years.

Now let's hope this doesn't just stay a concept car and makes it to the actual production without too many changes.

Front looks Aston Martin 'ish, but overall it's a really stunning design, well done Peugeot :D

lets hope that the next coupe - possibly the replacement for the 407 coupe, has some of this concept look and takes on this new design

Anonymous said... »January 08, 2010

thanks Aston and Nissan !!!!
Anyway another concept who will never make it to production..
Nice effort though !

I like the way Peugeot is heading to

Last Peugeot I liked was the 406 Coupe, stunningly gorgeous. Downhill since they dumped Pinninfarina. Recent Peugeots haven't been as durable or reliable as the old legendary 404's, but at least if they looked good, there would be more reason to take the risk.

God, I hope it doesn't lose to much of its incredible design through the production stage.

An absolute stunner!

This marks the behinning of a new era! Citroen with the DS range and now Peugeot with a new design language and a focus on sport....who knows...maybe we'll even get to see the RC Hybrid and 908 RC one day....a great comeback from my beloved Peugeot....salute to Phillipe Varrin, Jean Marc Gales and Gilles Vidal!

If it weren't for Aston Martin, what would Peugeot do? Nice work Aston, oops, i mean Peugeot!

Anonymous said... »January 09, 2010

OMG!!!! .... bring that "ASTON copy" to the masses instead of "TT copy" - RCZ.
Also make it a proper RWD drive coupe.
You know as BMW does .... you've all ready shared power plants.

Nice!

This is more Chris Bangle and ZZ8, then Aston Martin.

So...it doesn't have 'roll up' windows?

Looks really good! I can see a lot of Fisker here as well. The interior looks messy, but this is an interesting direction.

Anonymous said... »January 09, 2010

Finally! They lose this horrendous gaping grille-design of the current ugly-ass models.

This one looks really nice!

Anonymous said... »January 10, 2010

Perfect ... especially now I have a family of 3 --- myself, baby in the middle, and wife on the side.

This is very nice. Hope they make it a reality!

All the "Aston Martin" copy remarks are subliminal, have you blithering twats even put a picture of the Aston Martin and this car together...that's right you'll see that the there's nothing really identical ...the grille is no similar! the lights are no way similar, the hood is now way similar...I have to agree with you though I have seen thos Michelins on a alot of cars ...maybe you gusy are referring to the Michelins...I fully agree...Aston Martins have used Michelins before...

it looks similar to an aston martin and even a jaguar, but there is nothing wrong with that. some designs are simply "classic" shapes. take the beauty of the human body (not in a "dirty" sense) and you have the glorious shape of a graceful car. a great design often evokes nature, like a large cat, as with jaguar -- the car and impressive feline.

It's useless 'Voltron'

You all look at the design language of the BMW Z8 and to some degree the recent BMW 650's.

sexy and cracking design. Peugeot is a brand on the move. What do they say....Motion & Emotion!

Anonymous said... »January 25, 2010

Great job, brilliant car, so elegant, smooth and at the same time sporty and sexy. this one should definitely go into production (with some changes made with regard to the interia; i don't like the driver-oriented console; it's an old-fashioned solution), but the exterior is cracking, breathtaking, just so good, i simply can't get my eyes off it.
am glad peugeot quit its terribly ugly gaping front grill, and the cat eyes (front lights) are a bit out of date now.
this is what peugeot needs.
i would really want to see this one on the road unchanged (except the interia)
well done!!!

This is one BEAUTIFUL car. I don't see the ASTON copy here, but if so it is certainly NOT A CLONE. So all that matters is whether its breathtaking or not. This one is pretty darn breathtaking to me. Id have one in a minute.

And it has got to be the SEXIEST hybrid proposed !!

WELL DONE
