Only a few days after announcing that it would recall approximately 2.3 million vehicles to correct sticking accelerator pedals on specific Toyota Division models, the Japanese automaker said today that it will temporarily suspend sales of eight Toyota vehicles that are on the recall list in the USA. No Lexus or Scion models are included in the sales suspension. The affected Toyota models are listed below:
- 2009-2010 RAV4
- 2009-2010 Corolla
- 2009-2010 Matrix
- 2005-2010 Avalon
- Certain 2007-2010 Camry
- 2010 Highlander
- 2007-2010 Tundra
- 2008-2010 Sequoia
For the record, the Toyota models not affected by the temporary sales halt are the Prius, Tacoma, Sienna, Venza, Solara, Yaris, 4Runner, FJ Cruiser, Land Cruiser and select Camry models, including all Camry hybrids, which will remain for sale.
According to the company, the new sticking accelerator pedal recall is separate from the on-going recall of around 1.7 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles to reduce the risk of pedal entrapment by incorrect or out of place accessory floor mats.
In this latest recall, the Japanese automaker said that it has investigated isolated reports of sticking accelerator pedal mechanisms in certain vehicles even without the presence of floor mats.
According to Toyota, there's a possibility that certain accelerators may, "in rare instances, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position."
"Helping ensure the safety of our customers and restoring confidence in Toyota are very important to our company," commented Group Vice President and Toyota Division General Manager Bob Carter.
"This action is necessary until a remedy is finalized. We're making every effort to address this situation for our customers as quickly as possible."
Because of the sales halt, the company said that it will stop producing vehicles on certain production lines for the week of February 1. The affected factories are listed below:
--Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Canada (Corolla, Matrix, and RAV4)
--Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana (Sequoia and Highlander)
--Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky – Line 1 (Camry and Avalon)
--Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. (Camry)
--Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas (Tundra)

Lo' and behold! What else does your company have to offer the world if all the cars you make are a public safety hazard?
Reliable my ass!
Funny seeing the lexus ES killed that cop and has family a few miles from my house in so cal wasnt enough to suspend or halt sales of any lexus models, and i read the tacoma is having the same problems but it aint included ?

-Then ride on your reliable ass.
If Toyota is not reliable then which other company is? Every comapany will have issues at some point or the other and this has been blown up i think.
There is no choice other than your reliable ass.
wonder if the rental car companies are going to pull these cars from their lots....Hertz for one has a ton of all of these models.
Hmmm - not only is Toyota not moving forward, they aren't even moving. Biggest recall in history?

The answer is every other automaker seeing how Toyota can't even make a car anymore without it trying to kill you.
As for reliablity, gas pedals aside, the Tundra and FJ-Crusier have frame strengh issues and they rust permaturely. Toyota can't ride on past glory forever, especally if most of their cars are unsafe.
while such recalls are quite unfortunate and should put a huge question sign over Toyota, this new measure of suspending sales should be appreciated
The purpose for suspending sales to not create more inventory that will sit on dealers lots and have to be repaired, at additional cost to Toyota, after they come up with the fix. What is to be appreciate here is that they are minimizing their losses.
Toyota's initial actions in this situation are wholly owned by Toyota and problematic, but not the cause of the problem
The part in question is a sub-contractor part supplied to Toyota by an American subcontractor.
Toyota's are still very good cars and I for one would have no issues or reservations owning or recommending one to anyone and I'm not a big fan of Toyota, but that's an issue with excitement not quality.

Baa, baa! Funny to hear all the Toyota sheep! Toyota is recalling 2.3 million...*2.3 MILLION*...vehicles, and it's all, "Good for them! Excellent job!" LMAO
Toyota is recalling & suspending their vehicles world wide but in America. So, it might be that only American built Japanese cars are having this kind of problem. As stated above Land Cruiser is not in the list of cars which are being recalled or halted b'cuz Land Cruiser is purely Japanese built.
But how do you explain a recall that covers 8 different plants? Yank workers can't take the blame of consiously arranging and planning to make defective parts, a consipracy of something that large can't be hidden by non-unionized workers. Toyota knew and if it wasn't for that family that they killed, this would have been a cover up.
It doesn't matter if their cars were built on the moon. They knowingly sold cars with defective parts that costs people's lives...2.3 million's worth.
Ford has just announced that they will be recalling cars that have the same defective components supplied by the same subcontractor sourced by Toyota.

It's interesting how all of these Toyotas are made in America. The ones made in Japan or those VIN #s starting in JT are not in the recall.
This just proves that American-made no matter what origin the company is from are just crap! So much for being the "#1 country" in the world, if it can't even fix this.
did you forget about the denso gas pedal made in japan that were used during assembly in the US?
The part was made to toyota's specs. They are entirely at fault. You can't blame workers or nations for this, only a corupt multi-national corporation.
Si TOYOTA construyese automóviles y no lavadoras, es decir se tomaran el negocio como algo más personal, seguramente no deberían realizar estas revisiones masivas que ofrecen una imagen muy pobre de la compañía (como la estética de sus creaciones....)
I give credit to Toyota for stopping sales of the models that are affected. I am a big fan of some Toyota models and I have family and friends that drive Toyota vehicles and I hope that FULL THROTTLE acceleration does not happen to them. I just hope because of this that it will save more lives.
I just leased a Toyota Camry last fall, I didn't realize it already had a recall regarding the front floormat before I even made the deal. I sat at a Toyota service center and got both recalls taken care of. The head of the service area did not calm my fears, just said this service is what "they" say will take care of the accelorator issue and mat issue. Oh well, I wish I had stayed away from Toyota, I'm afraid to drive it too much, feel as though it could be a deathtrap, but what can I do? Nothing, I can't get out of the lease.
