The brand-new, seventh generation of the Nissan Patrol had its world premiere in Abu Dhabi on Sunday. The Japanese firm claims that the 2011 model year of its Toyota Land Cruiser rival builds on its history as one of the most capable 4x4s in the market adding a more modern design, enhanced interior comfort and luxury as well as a more powerful V8 powerplant to the equation.
Nissan's product design director, Taiji Toyota (how ironic...), tells us that the Patrol's all-new exterior design, which was previewed by the 2006 Terranaut Concept, is less rugged and more upscale.
"Not as edgy and hardcore as its predecessor, the softer new surfaces are beautiful and add a sense of modernity to the design equation, while still maintaining a ruggedness and commanding road presence" he said.
In similar fashion, the new Patrol's interior is a much more luxurious place to be with the company claiming that since most customers spend less than 15% of the time off-road, it wanted to create "a better, higher quality interior for the whole family".
That translates to a more premium design with generous amounts of leather, polished aluminum and wood grain paneling as well as a bevy of luxury features such as a new multi-screen DVD entertainment system with two rear-facing 7-inch screens embedded into each front seat headrest.
Furthermore, Nissan says that it has improved passenger space with the 2011 Patrol offering over 100mm more legroom for second row passengers, and a roomier third row of seats as well.
The latest generation Patrol is built on a new platform and is offered with a new and more powerful 5.6-litre V8 engine that replaces the previous model's 4.8-liter V8. Featuring direct injection technology, the new V8 produces 400hp and 550Nm of torque. Nissan did not disclose any details on any other future powerplant offerings for the Patrol.
The 5.6-liter V8 engine is linked to a new 7-speed automatic transmission and an upgraded 4WD system that incorporates a variable 4x4 mode package allowing the driver to quickly switch between four drive modes: sand, on-road, snow and rock.
The 2011 Patrol gets a new suspension setup that now employs 4-wheel independent suspension, upgraded from the previous rigid axle setup, while Nissan also equipped the SUV with a Hydraulic Body Motion Control System (HBMC), which is said to reduce body roll during lane-changing and cornering.
Other highlights include the new Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control and a revised brake system with new hydraulic brake booster and a 4-piston opposed front caliper setup with larger 358mm front discs.
While the new Patrol will form the base for the 2011 Infiniti QX (see here) - due for launch in North America towards the end of the year or in early 2011- it remains to be seen if Nissan's luxury SUV makes it on this side of the Atlantic.

Huh. Korean design is better than Japanese. Hmm.
Nissan Joke, err Juke, now this......
You know, I'm not a suv type of guy. They are really not my type, because most of them lack substance and quality. In my mind they are just big boxes on wheels with no emotions or intentions. This though makes a point to say that it has a purpose and not just a box with an engine in it. I always love the design philosophy of the new infinities; so unique and different.

That Could be a suitable replacement for the Current Nissan Armada
I hope we get this in North America as the next Armada/QX56. Looks nice.
Park this thing beside the new Land Cruiser or Lexus or other Japanese 8 seat-SUV and you won't see much of a difference.
Landcruiser and patrol is Orthodox design.
Because these not a tool for play.
These cars required to make a journey to ensure the-road performance and Reliability.
Other SUV is useless on real desert.
beats land cruiser for sure
i like the upscale and macho look, but i am getting sick of the side vents, portholes and gills that look silly on many of todays cars, trucks and suv's. try something novel or create a unique look. other than this distraction, the car has a rich design.
Somewhat ugly and rugged, she's an incarnation of poor man's Porsche Cayenne. She'll cruise as fast as 160mph(250-260km/h) on very long straight in Middle-East,with delimitered. I was truly knocked out by the news about Buick Enclave scorching at 150mph(242km/h) on US freeway, yet the brand-new Nissan Patrol would be a regular cross-country GT!
love the design and better than land cruiser.
I am impressed with this SUV. I would seriously consider this compared to Range Rover as well. Almost flawless design without being Land Rover or Jeep off-road specific and at the same time perfectly fitting Nissan and serious SUV.
Just one question - why does it have almost SAABs traditional grille, not to mention less obvious exterior details like it was inspired by all Saab concepts?
it's nothing more than one just big UGLY thing.
One of the best design now a days and not a copy of other automobile, Nissan always are independent in terms of design and they have the best technology deployed for this particular Patrol to be a true segment leader in its class
looks like a Toyota eww
awesome
id like to buy one... when it comes to philippines...#
question???? what is the exact date to be in the philippines..???
It Will be release on July 2, 2010 with an introductory price of 5.4M. If you want to have one ahead visit your Nissan dealer.
What are they thinking in Japan this would have to be the most ugly vehicle I have seen looks like a girls car, if I wanted that I would buy a Toyota or a Hundi.Have they ever been to the Australian outback? I have been a nissan patrol owner for 10 years, I won't be getting this one, please build a mans 4x4.
Who the hell would seriously take something with 4 wheel independent suspension into the bush, desert, or anywhere requiring off-road prowess?
Another soft, yuppie-friendly, watered down reincarnation of a proven workhorse.
Solid axle rigs will always outperform this over-sized wuss-mobile with car bits underneath in stability, reliability, articulation, and stoutness. To call the latest generation Patrol rugged or even capable, is a complete lie - a marketing tool sold to Joe Starbucks that's feeling a bit emasculated from the kid-glove lifestyle he's been pampered with living in an urban hell.
Ugly. Why do they all blindly follow fashion ?
And independent suspension is not the way to go.
We want a solid truck, not a wuss-wagon.
Increase top gear ratios and decrease transfer case ratios and get rid of the trendy glitz then Aussies might buy one.
The only good thing is getting rid of that 3.0l diesel.
I am not really into offroading, but would like to do some offroading in the future. This new Patrol is on my top of the buying list. Hope the price will still be affordable like the previous model when it was new to the market.
Does anyone know the prices and release date of the new Patrol in Australia?
