Today, Volvo unleashed a slew of photos and details of its very promising all-new 2011 S60 sedan that will have its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show on the 2nd of March.
The premium model, which this time is aimed directly at cars like the Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class, is described by Volvo as the firm's most dynamic car ever produced, not only in terms of styling but also in terms of driving characteristics.
It's sculptured shape with the coupe-like roofline was previewed by the S60 study at the 2009 Detroit Show, and even though the design has been toned down a notch, it remains very close to the (well-accepted) original concept.
"Its profile radiates so much coupe feeling that the rear doors come as something of a pleasant surprise when you examine the car close-up," says Volvo Cars' Design Director Peter Horbury.
Inside, the styling is equally fresh with Volvo's designers paying extra attention to details and the choice of materials. The Swedes also claim that it's more spacious that its predecessor offering 30mm more knee room for the rear passengers while boot opening has been made 107 mm wider than in the previous S60.
"The interior has a more extrovert attitude than before, but without losing any of its practical Scandinavian roots. The all-new S60 brings us up to a whole new level when it comes to the integral experience of colour, form, material and technology," says Peter Horbury.
Volvo is pitching the new S60 as a driver's car due to its refined chassis that is backed up by a range of electronic systems and the new engine line up.
The new sedan can be specified with a choice of two chassis - Dynamic and Comfort- with the differences concerning the dampers and the front and rear subframes.
In Europe, the newly developed dynamic chassis is standard, while most markets in North America and Asia will have the comfort chassis as standard with the sport variant available as an option.
All variants of the new S60 can be specified with the latest iteration of the firm's self-adjusting FOUR-C active chassis.
Special features include the new Advanced Stability Control with a new roll angle sensor, the Corner Traction Control that uses torque vectoring to improve cornering and the available Pedestrian Detection system that can detect pedestrians who walk into the road in front of the car, warn the driver and automatically apply full braking power if the driver does not respond in time.
At launch the car will be available with two diesel and two gasoline units with three more petrol and one diesel to follow later on.
The most powerful engine is the 3.0-liter T6 petrol with 304HP and 440 Nm of torque that's combined with standard AWD and second-generation six-speed automatic Geartronic transmission. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h (62mph) takes 6.5 seconds and top speed is 250 km/h or 155mph.
The new four-cylinder 2.0 GTDi (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) engine has produces 203HP and 300 Nm with acceleration from 0-100 km/h (62mph) taking 7.7 seconds with the manual gearbox and 8.2 seconds with the automatic. The top speed figures are 235 km/h (manual) and 230 km/h (automatic).
The S60 2.0T with manual gearbox uses 7.9 litres of fuel per 100 km equal to 29.8mpg US.
Volvo said that during the first year of production, the all-new S60 will also be offered with a 2.0 GTDi variant (T5) producing 240HP and torque of 320 Nm and a 1.6-litre GTDi engine available in two versions with 180HP (T4) and 150HP (T3).
All the GTDi gasoline engines will be available in combination with Volvo's automatic six-speed Powershift transmission or a six-speed manual gearbox.
The range also includes two five-cylinder turbodiesels. The D5 with 205HP and 420 Nm of torque propels the S60 from 0-100 km/h (62mph) in 7.8 seconds (manual and automatic) while top speed is 235 km/h (manual) and 230 km/h (automatic).
Fuel consumption is 5.9 l/100 km (EU Combined, preliminary figure) or 39.9mpg US with the manual gearbox.
In addition there is the newly developed 2.0-liter D3 producing 163HP and 400 Nm of torque. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h (62mph) takes 9.2 seconds (manual and automatic) while top speed is 220 km/h (manual) and 215 km/h (automatic).
With a manual gearbox, fuel consumption (EU Combined, preliminary figure) is now down to 5.2 l/100km or 45.2 mpg US
Both turbodiesels are available with six-speed automatic transmissions or a six-speed manual gearbox while the D5 can also be specified with all-wheel drive.
The most fuel efficient S60 will be the DRIVe version fitted with a 115HP 1.6-liter turbo diesel and a six-speed manual gearbox that returns 4.3lt/100km or 54.7mpg US.

What Have We done to Volvo?
Look what we've done...

this is no true volvo, this is a shitty ford!!
It's nice, but the asymmetric arrangement of the NAV screen and airvents is a bit odd looking.
The dashboard looks hideous- as if a Corolla got married to a Volvo.
Awesome exterior, not so crazy bout the interior however.
looks like they spent too much time designing the exterior of the car and then... they said: D#$m and the interior??
I don't like the interior, not even a little bit.
indeed dashboard and airvents looks really odd...
All the pics look like CGI. Is it a real car?
The set-up is quite odd, but the quality is good. So, no complaints from me.

....yeah, not a big fan of the interior but it fits as the latest incarnation of their standard dash.
The "floating" dash part, the centre vent and the sat-nav look extremely awkward however and there is definitely some room for improvement.
It's gone from the floating dash to the bloating dash!
(Perhaps the air vents would look better if they didn't have the "chrome" detailing?)

Another first-class second-hand car, like the Phaeton.
Coupe-like rooflines - I know this is the current design direction but...
I miss good visibility, headroom in the back and the ability to get into the back seat without hitting my head.
(yeah, yeah, I know buy a Superb instead)
One of Volvo's best cars (even if it was FWD) was the 850 and you didn't need cameras to reverse, a helmet to get into the backseat (no puns about getting your helmet out in the backseat) or the need to cut the top of your head off to sit at the back.
When will someone get the form v. function balance right again?

loving this car, it's promising for Volvo, attractive and purposeful, do miss the days of a chunky 'non-sporty' Volvo aka 240 estate; maybe they should have an un-sexy sister model!?
the dashboard is really ugly. the odometer reminds me something very old...
the photo with the guy with the skateboard is really funny..like an old STAR TREK !!!!
on screen mr.Spock!!
i was waiting more from the interior....anyway...
Very nice exterior , the rear is perfect & sexy
The front is like a chinese mercedes
Interior nothing special
but...the T4 , 1.6 , 4 cyl in-line , 180 bhp , 240 Nm engine....hmmmmm....a real smasher !!
I love it all, you guys need to give this time, just like the honda crosstour, lol
with everyone saying that the airvents nd the navi are at awkward places I think is too bad. I think this brings more unique style, not all elements of a dashboard or centre console have to be symmetrical you know, just think about that for a while
Most have been ticked off by the interior but its refreshing and i like it. Only problem if it is, that the 5th last image showing the side profile of the car shows the centre console has a steep angle from the back and may be that will cramp up room for the arm while gear shifting. but then car is not yet been tested.
Overall a wonderlful car from Volvo
That interior is so ugly..
Are those GTDi engines Ford's EcoBoost engines?
What a Geely design! I don't like at all.
"not all elements of a dashboard or centre console have to be symmetrical you know"
- Yeah but, it fucking looks better

Worthy attempt to revitalise the S60. Kudos to Ford for allowing Volvo to genuinely capitalise from the whole groups R&D, while allowing some decisions on self identity/input to remain. Unlike arguably some other American-Swedish ventures!
The engine range is spot on, comprehensively covering all global mass market demands, with only a halo extreme performance model missing (but they still have the possibility to release one later in the model cycle).
In the spirit of brand reinforcement I see that the 960/S90, 2nd gen V70, XC60 get the oh-so-subtle cameos in the ‘real world scenario’ pictures, with even a nod to the brothers at Volvo Trucks with the pedestrian hiding FM. Brand identity is not dead at Volvo!
However, it’s a little worrying that the initial annual target is no more in absolute numbers than what was actually achieved with the previous S60 in its early years. Is it caution, lack of ambition, or is the profitability of the new S60 way up? The new S60 will certainly make big gains in certain markets like Russia, but with Volvo claiming no overall gain in net sales for an all new model, are they possibly resigning themselves in the more established markets to just targeting the market share lost in the latter years of the previous S60……

I love it all
A beautiful car!!
2009 Volvo sold 65000 XC60
Now we have S60
Later this year V60
V60 will be, without hesitation, the best selling model in the 60-serie.

"Are those GTDi engines Ford's EcoBoost engines?"
Yes they are. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_EcoBoost_engine#Marketing:_GTDi
i would like to see more materials and colour combinations :D
The GTDi engines are not Fords, They have been created by Volvo at there Engine Plant i Skövde, Sweden...
Love the saddle tan! Gray should be banned by the UN Council on dreariness.
An awesome new comer from Volvo. I'm truly knocked out by the 3.0-turbo 304bhp petrol T-6 version. She'll become a formidable rival for the likes of BMW 335i,VW Passat R36,Opel Insignia OPC,Audi A4 3.2,and parallel-imported Lexus IS350 in crucial EU market. Ergonomics with environment-friendly concept never contradict high-performance intention, that's what she incarnates.
Along with it,the T4 with 240bhp and 2.0-litres diesel with 205bhp show excellent mechanical efficiency, the superb combination between fuel consumption and power delivery.
On the contrary, her front mask seems somewhat cluttered and undigested, frankly speaking. And her body shape makes steep fastback styling with not-so-good visibility as well as tight headroom. Her lambent beauty seems to sacrifice some amount of practicality especially spaciousness,in my notion.
As a conclusion,"impeccable engineering wrapped in cool beauty without sheer inevitability"!
PS:correction
sixth line from top:(wrong)2.0-litres diesel (right)2.4-litres diesel
hard plastic dash?????
Rear = Honda Civic
Can't wait to see the V60 wagon version. Looks great in the coppery brown with tan interior (that orange is not what it looks like)
YUCK!!!!! I was going to purchase an S40 R-design this summer (2010) and learned that it was being replaced by this horrid, ford taurus/buick cross-bred contraption. Not only does it resemble an 80`s taurus/buick boat, but I see a bit of Honda,Toyota and Hundyai mixed in with it. Too bad....I`m sure they will sell a handful in the states to Volvo loyalists, but I doubt they stir much with the rest of the market.
Guess I`ll dump a couple of extra bucks for an Audi. Bummed.
Unfortunately for Volvo, they are now owned by China.
