Patent Designs of Chevrolet Sedan with Camaro-esque Read End: Is it the New Malibu, Impala or Something Else?

|

Fact: these official drawings of an unnamed Chevrolet sedan were filed with the U.S. patent office by General Motors. And well, that's where the facts end and the speculations start. Looking at the photos, we assume that this mystery Chevrolet four-door saloon with the Camaro-inspired rear-end design is either a mid- or full-size sedan.

And while we know for sure that General Motors is readying a redesign for its Camry-fighting Chevrolet Malibu, we're not at all certain that this is the car depicted here.

For all we know, it could be a replacement for the Impala or (less probably) maybe for the European market and Daewoo-based, Chevy Epica sedan.

Hit the jump to check out the rest of the drawings and tell us what you think in the comments section.

chunky, square-ish, sporty.. looks good to me. I remember something about the next Malibu getting a sportier design in line with the Camaro. Maybe...

Nice, it reminds me a mercedes e class with insignia frond and camaro end. lol.

Next gen Impala.

Anonymous said... »March 11, 2010

I'm going to go with Malibu.

Anonymous said... »March 11, 2010

The proportions of it would suggest a Malibu, looks too small for the Impala. I sure hope the car looks better than the drawings. It looks like Chevy took their inspiration from a '90's Chrysler Cirrus and also the Mazda Millenia, with the Chevy Uplander nose grafted on. This is not going to help them win back sales.

That, my friends, is a Malibu.

Hey MR.Carscoop

Have a nice day.

Mr JokeforBlog

Fact 1: These drawings are from the U.S. Patent office and not the European Patent Office. Get your facts straight.

Fact 2 : I personally searched for these photos on the U.S., Patent Office. Again, get your facts right before you make accusations.

Fact 3: Here's a screenshot of the Chevrolet sedan patent:

Need more facts?

Joe, you've been pawned man. Now to the Chevy, I'll have to disagree with some of the previous readers. To me, it simply looks too big to be a Malibu so I'll go with the Impala

Impala, Malibu, whatever. I like what I'm seeing in these drawings.

JOKEJOE said... »March 11, 2010

More facts..?

No thanks.

You are right

That's my fast EURO screenshot:

So now discovered the US patent office.

bye.

JokeJoe, it appears that it was filed first in the U.S. last year and that this article was posted here before on your site. Why don't you just leave them alone here.

since they are coming out with new caprice (impala) rwd interceptor for the police aka pontiac g8 long wheelbase seems most likely the consumer counterpart

Anonymous said... »March 11, 2010

It is quite clear based on the Opel Insignia. I have compared the technical drawings.

Anonymous said... »March 11, 2010

John @ Carscoop
One question are the technical construction plans of Opel are also there? I've read that the intellectual property or patents of Opel are at a subsidiary of GM in the U.S. and not in Germany. I remember than GM has pledged its and therefore of Opel patents at the US government for money. The developments that Opel does get into the U.S., but that's only been a few years so. Previously, the patents were always at Opel in Ruesselsheim. It could be possible that the Chevy was designed in Europe and then the patent moved to the US.

John @ Carscoop said... »March 11, 2010

@Anon, Only of the the Buick Regal (Insignia).

Anonymous said... »March 11, 2010

Ford taurus high proportion copy. High clearance should be a good looking Impala looks to big to be a malibu if so whats the range for the new impala 30-35K

Anonymous said... »March 11, 2010

This is the Malibu, and they should replace the aging and boring Daewoo made Epica with this, because there is nothing epic about that car.

Braddo said... »March 11, 2010

I sure hope its a replacement for the (Holden) Epica - What a horrendous piece of rubbish that car is - And to think we get that instead of an Opel Insignia here in Australia.. These Daewoo/GM cars are crap.. Holden Here has sold out with replacing its european sourced Opels with Korean Garbage. . .Sure dont see many Barinas or Vivas (astra replacements) on the road.. Think they are built for people who know NOTHING about cars at all..

Anonymous said... »March 11, 2010

Looks like someone "Bangled" the butt of this car.

Anonymous said... »March 12, 2010

Anyone who says that this resembles a Taurus is truly delusional.
I doubt Chevy waited around for Ford to re-hash that aging Volvo platform, yet again, to get design inspiration.

Anonymous said... »March 12, 2010

The front reads more Mercedes C-class(ish) to me.
And since C-classes have become so bread-and-butter, why not copy it at this level?

Tom said... »March 12, 2010

I am a GM Engineer and can say for a fact that this is the new Malibu.

Anonymous said... »March 12, 2010

The styling of the car is too close to the Insignia/Regal. Lacrosse or Saab 95 are based on EpsilonII too, but they looks unique.

Anonymous said... »March 12, 2010

Is the new Malibu Chevy's G8 rollout?

Anonymous said... »March 13, 2010

Patents are usually filed world wide.

Anonymous said... »March 13, 2010

No one outside of a few within GM knows fir certain, so guessing is fruitless.

It has been made very clear that Chevrolet is about to replace the current Malibu before they finalize plans for a new Impala or Impala replacement of a different name, perhaps Capric.

The 2010 Mailbu is gorgeous. The Impala is ugly and in long need of a new design. GM dropped the ball with the present day Impala.

Anonymous said... »March 13, 2010

Impala SS , Same transmission and engines as camaro.

Anonymous said... »March 15, 2010

ugh, the wheelbase needs to be longer, but keep the same overall length. too much overhang!!!!

Anonymous said... »March 16, 2010

It looks like a Chevrolet. Chevrolet has for years had hoods that had lines and impressions that scooped to each side of the front grill. Not a Buick, or Cadillac. The styling is Chevrolet's. Hope it is a new Impala to replace the current design that is five years old now. The new design is cool looking. When is it going to be available to the public? It looks like it will be a hit.

Anonymous said... »March 25, 2010

The front end looks like a middle eastern Caprice, I take it it's probably its successor. Perhaps G8 replacement since it's on the same platform.

Brend said... »July 15, 2011

Impala, Malibu, whatever. I like what I'm seeing in these drawings.
