2011 Fiat Uno: First Official Photos of New Italian Supermini

|

These here are the first official photographs of the 2011 Fiat Uno, a new supermini that will sit between the Panda and the Grande Punto in the Italian automaker's vehicle range.

The car borrows its name from the predecessor of the Punto and Grande Punto superminis, the highly successful Uno that was introduced in 1983 as a replacement to the ageing Fiat 127. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the original Uno remained in production until 1995 having received a heavy facelift in 1989.

Its spiritual successor, which closely resembles a larger Panda in appearance, will be manufactured in Brazil.

It will be offered (initially) in two flavors, the standard five-door hatchback model and the crossover-ish Uno Way that boasts a higher road clearance and rugged looks.

There are no details on the engine range, but South American buyers shouldn't expect any surprises under the hood as Fiat will most likely use the same small displacement powertrains found on its other models.

Sources state that the new Uno will also make its way to Europe, Russia and other major international markets, but Fiat has yet to announce any specific details.

The engines confirmed for Brazilian market are 1.0 8v Flexfuel and 1.4 8v Flexfuel, from the Fiat-Powertrain Fire engines family.

OK, prepare for the usual 'what a piece of shit comments' but how refreshing and honest this car is, for most people a car is transport- and this will be great no-nonsense, rugged, cheap to run and repair- good on you FIAT for giving people what they actually need

Fiat Oh-no :D

"the original Uno remained in production until 1995"

Correction: Remained in production until 2002 in South Africa (I had a '96) and a revised model is in fact still being built in Brazil

Honest car, very cheap, in Brazil the old model costs almost half the price of a Grande Punto. The new one its revealed that will cost less than 2/3 of a Grande Punto. Thats very cheap, and the car very solid built. It keeps the Panda good driving qualities, while offers more space. A nice product for countries like Brazil and South Africa.

Great improvement over past Fiat models! Love the novel half grille.

Indeed...it does looks honest...Imo, I will need to acquaint myself of the new Uno's semi-SUV look...perhaps designed for the rough roads of Brazil and other similar countries (e.g. South Africa, India, etc)

The old Facelift UNO looks so elegant. Thats because the master himself ( Gugiaro ) designed it. This new one cannot compete in looks. And by the way , I'm in South Africa and I guarantee that nobody will buy this ugly hatch. The Panda is a flop here. South Africans like the POLO.

Anonymous said... »April 22, 2010

For the anonymous above, who lives in South Africa: the Polo costs almost 2x more than an Uno. How they can be possibly be compared? Besides, for my taste the new Uno is better designed than the Panda itself.

Anonymous said... »April 22, 2010

I like the front end, reminiscent of the 1980 Panda maybe?

Anonymous said... »April 22, 2010

To anonymous above , there's 2 versions of the polo in South Africa, the current European polo, and the older Polo marketied as "Polo Vivo" , which would be priced similarly to this UNO. www.vw.co.za

Its not "Fix it again Tony", its Fix it again today. Who`s today?

Have to say this is a total disaster. Such shoddy design. If I were Alan Sugar from The Aprrentice. I d say these words to the designer...."Youre fired"

I personaly love two companies, Honda and Fiat. And the reason is that their cars are built around human emotions. And thats why they all have a honest and low profile. I think that the way the designers of those companies work, dont start from the competition, but from a white paper, like building a sculpture. I use to have a Fiat uno, and this name is still alive in my heart. And I like the new one. I think of people buing VWs as people with no passion at all. Thanx, from Greece.

good comment above, this FIAT isn't shoddy at all, it is just function. FIATs always have great character and almost soul, yeah, maybe the ugly kid school but owners still love 'em, I've had FIATs and never had problems, the 'Fix It Again Tosser' tag has been around since the early 70's (according to my Dad) and it simply isn't true!

hi, the engines from Uno of brasilian, 1.0 - 75 hp and 1.4 88 hp. I'm from Brazil! Bye

BRASILLLLLLLL!!!

@ anon 14
-Honda is not low profile!!

For the guy from South Africa: we have the old Polo in Brazil too. It costs 1,6x the price of the new Uno. Its a huge difference. And BTW, our old Polo is really basic, as yours. So I repeat: its not a matter of taste, Uno and Polo just can't be compared. If you doubt me, check the VW and Fiat brazillian sites.

uno é o carro mais barato do brasil

SamuraiJack said... »April 24, 2010

#Anon from Brazil

What Anon from SA is trying to say is that VW sells 2000+ Polos per month in South Africa while Fiats sells less than 20 Pandas a month. A 1.2 Panda costs R125900 while a 1.4 Polo Vivo costs R101500. That is why people in SA prefer Polos (which is actually SA's top selling car)

Anonymous said... »April 24, 2010

money to burn then... buy a Polo along with your personality bypass, no-one cares if you all follow eachother like sheep, bahhh, buy a souless vw

Marchionne said... »April 25, 2010

Fiat are known for controversial design, Like the Multipla & Doblo. If this car was just an ordinary looking cheap car like the Polo, Who would buy it? The Polo is tough competition and if FIat decided to make the Uno similar it would fail. But since it's bold and refreshing and there is no other car around even slightly like it (Apart from the Panda) It will succeed.

Anonymous said... »April 26, 2010

Of course Polo is superior. The intriguing part is: why the Panda costs more in South Africa? Thats very, very weird. As said, the Panda costs only a fraction of a the old Polo in Brazil. To me the problem seens to be on SA Fiat. They don't really want to sell Pandas there, theres no other explanation. So, wake up Fiat!

Yeah italian cars do have a soul,
the one that constantly denies not to break down and fall apart. lol

Come on victims of the italian marketing,
keep on buying their useless crappy cars!

Anonymous said... »April 26, 2010

Im pretty sure that 99 % of bad commentaries are from people that HAVE NEVER HAD A FIAT.
When you get one, if you ever have the chance, you will understand the "they have souls" saying.
Its a car that becomes part of you.
And indeed this cars need more love and care than other brands, but when you treat them good they give you back 200%, and that is satisfaction.
These are not fun-less soul-less generic cars like most Japanese cars that are basically a form of transportation.
Italian cars are part of ones life not a lifeless block of metal.

Anonymous said... »April 26, 2010

Oh!! I forgot to mention too this car is way nicer than xion XA XB XC, Nissan Qube, Kia Soul.
I do not see this car in the Corsa/Polo category.
THINK ABOUT THIS!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said... »April 27, 2010

Hi I am Brazilian and surely buy this car here it will compete with polo Sandero and other hatchs premiuns this car has a design harmonious and with great style.

O Novo Uno deverá se chamar EVO!

Anonymous said... »April 29, 2010

For the ones that criticized Fiat autos, these cars are, as a matter of fact, know by being durable and reliable in Brazil. The competition? VW, Ford, GM (Opels). So you see, that old image about Fiat is clearly not the same anymore. I strongly suggest a ride on one to understand what I mean.

Anonymous said... »April 30, 2010

The old Uno will be sold in Brazil until 2013 (never stoped). It is the cheapest national car and one of the top sellers.

Anonymous said... »May 29, 2010

it looks so "made for india"...it should come to india and before the jimny or the mahindra mini suv launches.. especially with the mini suv concept just opening up in india fiat could do a cameo with this car.. indians do like small vehicles that look big.. n ya they love the kms the car goes before a fill n ya they drool over low prices… the x-factor--indians do like domination on road having a suv or even a mini suv they look down at a Merc besides them... so if it has a good mileage n costs less than say 6-7 lacs, theres nothin to stop it from being a leader in the new trend.. it has looks anyway..

In terms of Styling and Design, I have to say Im am disapointed with the New Uno. Although in truth it's an excellent car technically!I just wish Fiat could have kept, reintroduced and updated the 1983/1990 Giorgetto Giugiaro Design Formula! For me the original Uno Design is already perfect! Why change it! just for the sake of change!
