All-New Hyundai Elantra / Avante Sedan Unveiled at Busan Motor Show

|

Only days after the unveiling of the new Accent small sedan (Verna for South Korea) in Beijing, Hyundai rolled out the next generation of its Elantra saloon - badged as the Avantre in its home market- at the 2010 Busan International Motor Show today.

Boasting a much sportier look than its rather dull predecessor, the new Elantra continues Hyundai's 'fluidic sculpture' design philosophy in a package that most automakers would describe today as a "four-door coupe".

There are no photos of the new Elantra's cabin, but we assume that the interior styling will be heavily influenced by the larger Sonata.

Hyundai has kept most technical details to itself, but the South Korean maker did reveal that the front-wheel drive Elantra / Avante will be offered with a new 1.6-liter Gamma Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The four-cylinder unit is rated at 140-horsepower and 166Nm or 122 lb-ft of peak torque, and according to Hyundai, "it's about 10 percent more fuel efficient than its closest competitors."

Tech goodies will include HID (High Intensity Discharge) headlamps, LED combination lamps in the rear, heated rear seats, puddle lamps and a color TFT LCD information display nestled in the gauge cluster.

"The new Avante encompasses Hyundai's latest ambitions, featuring the best styling and performance in its class," Steve S. Yang, President & CEO of Hyundai's Global Business Division, said at the Busan Exhibition and Convention Center (BEXCO) today. "We're confident that it will once again redefine the compact segment worldwide."

South Korean sales of the Avante are expected to start in the second half of 2010, with the rest of the world to follow either towards the end of the year or early 2011.

Looks very Honda City/Civic-ish.

Anonymous said... »April 29, 2010

That's a nice looking car. Much nicer looking than a civic, imho.

Rick said... »April 29, 2010

Wow, another class killer. Where's the interior shots?

Anonymous said... »April 29, 2010

nice car! looks like some hondas parts went in it!

Anonymous said... »April 29, 2010

Very beautiful car, I want one!

dis is one awesome ryd nuthin like a honda....u guyz shud jus stop with d hyundai hating..cuz it's nw becomin too obvious. Hyundai is a class leader

The previous Elantra looks pretty ugly, but the new one is really good. I really like the exterior! If the interior looks good like that, I will buy it. How's the mpg? I'm also expecting 6 speed manual and navigation. What about a Hybrid version like Sonata? I'm sure Elantra Hybrid version will be great killer through all classes. I think it's much much better than civic or corolla. Gooooo~d luck Hyundai!!!

In spite of FWD, the short front overhang is really amazing. It looks like RWD. I like that.
Hyundai's recent design is really good. Now, Elantra is my the top of my next wish list. I'm also really expecting Hybrid version.

Once again...Hyundai has proven that it can build aesthetically-pleasing cars... and again I would like to offer a cup of soju (Korean rice wine) to Hyundai for the good job...

Anonymous said... »April 29, 2010

it looks like the concept "i flow" ... maybe we'll see it in europe under the badge 'i 40"

Anonymous said... »April 29, 2010

@ Anonymous #1 true that i think its more on the City side.

Anonymous said... »April 29, 2010

ummm...i just googled the honda city and the new elantra doesn't have any resemblance.

Anonymous said... »April 29, 2010

"In spite of FWD, the short front overhang is really amazing. It looks like RWD."

I disagree. It still screams FWD and the distance from the edge of the front wheels to the edge of the fornt doors is far too short to be mistaken for RWD.

Not bad at all, almost beautiful. I like it.

Another hit by Hyundai ... this is a VERY pretty car! It doesn't cost more to build a good-looking car. It's nice to see that Hyundai is taking the fuel efficiency route instead of loading up their vehicles with overpowered gas guzzlers. Kudos to Hyundai for that! Now I'm hard pressed to decide if I'd like the Accent, Sonata, or Elantra best. The interior pictures will help when they come along.

btw ... here's a link to a spy shot of the interior.

honda-ish is a good thing. i agree with the striking similarity, but applaud them for not aggressively copying honda. both look different enough and attractive for unique reasons.

Anonymous said... »April 29, 2010

Hyundai is not copying... Just go look at all of their concepts vehicles. You'll notice that all of their production models are a logical development from their original concepts.. Many people do not see this & say that Hyundai is copying just bcus some parts reminds them of something... to a grandmother even a VW beetle reminds her of a Porsche Boxster she saw at a mall parking lot an hour ago....

Anonymous said... »April 29, 2010

yep this is definitely the production version of the iflow concept. It has to be badged i40. The Sonata is going to be badged i45 in Australia and i would say the new accent will be the i25.

Anonymous said... »April 29, 2010

lol wtf corolla against this...

Anonymous said... »April 29, 2010

I think Honda is pissed that Hyundai came up with this design sooner than they want for their next Civic!!

Anonymous said... »April 29, 2010

"fluidic sculpture" design= trouble for the competition. The majority of people go with the looks first...Honda, Toyota and others keep coming up with hideous designs, while Hyundai is creating nice designs...

Anonymous said... »April 30, 2010

"sayonara" Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Suzuki & other Japanese automaker.

Anonymous said... »April 30, 2010

Looks awfully flat in some angles.
I'm a fan of the current Elantra more.

Anonymous said... »April 30, 2010

Holy hell!

AMAZING!

Anonymous said... »April 30, 2010

You ARE a SuperStar Hyundai!

To those who pretend to like angular design of VW and Audi, they can go crash.

Anonymous said... »April 30, 2010

Goodbye Honda, Toyota, Nissan and Chevi. This Elantra is a serious killer. My mom has the current Elantra model. When I show her the pics she said: "I've to get this, it's so sexy".
I've compared the new Elantra with the new Ford Focus sedan and it looks nicer than the Focus too.
Great job Hyundai!!!

Anonymous said... »April 30, 2010

Email me one please.

Anonymous said... »April 30, 2010

Looks nothing like a Honda, if it did, i would be driving Hondas. This is a stunning car for its market. I really like the new Sonata, but i am thinking this might look even better. Great job Hyundai!

Anonymous said... »April 30, 2010

I can't wait for this! Please bring to North America quickly. How about light yellow or lemon color? I'm rally expecting the Hybrid Hardtop convertible version based on this model in the near future. Great job Hyundai! You will be the winner soon.

Anonymous said... »April 30, 2010

My short over hang means from the front end of the car to the edge of the front wheels, not from the edge of the front wheels to the edge of the front doors! And I also like the long wheel base of this.

Anonymous said... »April 30, 2010

Looks nice, but what about practicality? With the swoopy roofline, rear head room looks very limited. Wish the high belt line/swoopy rooflines w/ go away esp. in 4 dr sedans. Visibility/roominess/practicality are more important in a 4 dr sedan.

Anonymous said... »April 30, 2010

......sounds like a typical design student desperate to show off his knowledge about functionality/usability in design. The interior package of this new model is bigger than the oputgoing model in everyway so why don't you just go back to your studies... come back when you have finished school.

Finally, Hyundai found their own design after 2011 Sonata. Not a civic like. The new Sonata, Accent, Elantra all look similar, but diffenent.
It's like Europian automakers' design for example, BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Volvo. Now everyone knows the three cars are all Hyundai's.
Good job Hyundai!

Anonymous said... »May 01, 2010

The Hyundai Steam Roller continues it's take no prisoners path good design and value for the money.

Meanwhile back at Honda HQ's: wtf how do we keep getting upstaged by Hyundai? I want the one who told me Hyundai was never going be a threat, fire him now ...stay tune for the break down of honda's CEO

mean while at toyota's HQ's Sh@t we don't have time to look at pictures of hyundai's amazing products, we gotto stop our runaway cars ! d@mn why is hyundai being shown so much love and all we get is hate, stay tune for the bail out of toyota by lord knows who!

Meanwhile at Ford, how the blanking holy He@ll did Hyundai make our new festiva look like it was design 5 years ago,,oh lord we better go get more loans to stay afloat so we look like we know what we're doing !

Meanwhile at Hyundai's HQ's ...CELEBRATION, COME ON FEEL THE GOOD TIMES, OH YEA

Anther thought, This could be really beyound cool if hyundai put the 2.0 turbo from the genesis coupe in this car or even go crazy and put te sonata's 2.4 turbo engine in the elantra

Anonymous said... »May 02, 2010

^ there is no 2.4 turbo in sonata, but anyway, nicely done again by hyundai...

Anonymous said... »May 03, 2010

Mazda 6

Anonymous said... »May 03, 2010

Hyundai already has a gasoline direct injection 2.0 turbo pumping out 275 horses which will be in the Sonata Turbo coming out this fall...

Maybe Hyundai can put this in this Elantra & make a performance version. Well done hyundai.

Anonymous said... »May 03, 2010

Nice car

Anonymous said... »May 03, 2010

Beau~tiful!!!
I want nice 5 spoke wheels for this car.
How about convertible version?
Now, it's the time Hyundai should make some convertible versions (Sonata or Elantra) with hard top. I think Hyundai's technology is enough for that, and Hyundai can make it at reasonable price. I really want a nice convertible but all convertibles from other makers are still so expensive or have poor performance! Hyundai, you can do it!!!

Anonymous said... »May 03, 2010

^^^ what about mazda 6 ?!?

Anonymous said... »May 06, 2010

There aint a dud angle on that car. It's so hard to design a medium sized car with all the safety and packaging constraints and still deliver a pleasing shape. Congrats Hyundai. It's beautiful.

The Ford Focus 2011 will beat this ugly thing by far .

Anonymous said... »May 09, 2010

Ford Focus is ugly, cant be compared to beautiful Elantra

Anonymous said... »May 09, 2010

VW Golf is better than any cars in its class you guys mentioned. all of the major car companies are copying from VW Golf. see y'all.

Anonymous said... »May 09, 2010

yes, I agree with VW. after all VW owns Lamborghini, Audi, Rolls Royce, and Bugatti. Das Auto!

Anonymous said... »May 09, 2010

"after all VW owns Lamborghini, Audi, Rolls Royce, and Bugatti."

By that measure, I can then be as blind as you and say that VW is junk because they also make Skoda and Seat.

Moron.

You don't think you're worthy of the title of 'moron'? You are considering you think the VW brand owns the Rolls Royce brand. Check your facts.

The brands owned by a parent company DO NOT reflect upon the products made by another brand under the parent company.

Furthermore, the VW brand DOES NOT own Lamborghini, Audi, Rolls, and Bugatti. All of those brands, including the VW brand, are owned by a parent company called VW group.

VW group is not the same thing as the VW brand.

Anonymous said... »May 10, 2010

VW , the poorest quality for last 3 years by JD- Power, check the facts "moron", also check , on what position stays Hyundai, by far over "DAS AUTO" ...

Anonymous said... »May 10, 2010

u guys also compares engine by "DAS AUTO" 2.0L Turbo= 200 hp, and engine by "HYUNDAI" 2.0L Turbo= 274 hp ..."DAS AUTO" making that type of engine for YEARS, just check the facts!

Anonymous said... »May 15, 2010

simply awesome...

Hyundai POWER!!!!!!!!!!! Keep up the good work!

I just bought a 2011 new avante. for the money, it handels very well and the suspension is not stiff like the Honda. It reminds me of the GTI if hyndai is getting serious about making quality cars, they just hit a homerun with this one. The interior is well designed and the trunk looks like a cave. I'm almost 6 feet tall and the leg room is more than adequate. its very agile for the engine size and boast about 16.5KM/L.
