BAW's Land Rover & Jeep Wrangler Lookalike SUV Models Scooped on Posters

|

The 2009 Saab 9-5-derived C71 sedan isn't the only model BAW (that's short for Beijing Auto Works) is planning to reveal at this month's Beijing motorshow. Other debuts from the Chinese automaker include a little egg of a car and some very... Land Rover- and Jeep Wrangler-like entries into the sport-utility segment.

The smaller, electric hatchback model is called the C30 EV (somewhere a Volvo attorney just got a migraine), and it looks like a first-generation Insight-baby after a few too many Happy Meals, with a Yaris and a Fit for parents...

The SUVs are:

1) "007" (in black): Using what is no doubt some sort of reference to the secret agent, BAW says this is a compact SUV with "Jeep family characteristics". I don't see it. It may be coming with both a 2.0 and 2.4 liter engines and 2- / 4-wheel drive.

2) the Land Rover-y "B90" (in silver): No information, other than that it "resembles a Land Rover style, body dominated by straight lines and edges." Clearly.

3) the Jeep Wrangler (body) /Land Rover (fascia)-inspired "B40" (in red): Supposedly based on a shortened platform and the mechanics of the B90.

Ah, Beijing Auto Works; keeping the Chinese design-ripoff stereotype alive and kicking well into the 21st century.

Let them copy! So they don't develop the abilities to create. So it's ok.

The 'red one' reminds me of the 70's and the Matra-Simca Rancho. Hopefully not as fragile!

Keep those things INSIDE China

Remember when everyone laughed at Hyundai/Kia for copying? Remember when Hyundai was one of the few companies to turn a profit during the carpocolypse? Seems to me some recent Buicks have been designed in China and are getting good early reviews. All I'm sayin is...keep an eye...on the Chinese auto industry. You have been warned!!

a few days ago, carscoop showed us some very unique designs from china. i applauded them (and still do) for those, but i cannot say one good thing about these copycat designs. i do give credit, where credit is deserved!

Yes, we've been warned...we've also seen the crash test results.

You act as if suddenly the consumers won't bother looking at the crash ratings so long as the price is low.

Fool.

That's not a concern. Chinese cars have improved significantly in the area; by the time they reach American shores they will have solid 4+ star ratings.

One star short of a gold standard. Unacceptable.

Chinese cars with 4 stars won't cut it in NA. You know this; I know this; everyone knows this.
