These are the first 'real life' pictures of Citroën's latest concept car, the Metropolis, that gives certain German makers (see Porsche and BMW) a lesson or two on how to design an eye-candy luxury sports saloon.
The styling of the 5.3m long and 2m wide but only 1.4m high Metropolis has echoes of the French automaker's well received GT supercar concept of 2008. This one was developed by Citröen's Shanghai-based design team.
Under the subtle "Pearl Silk" colored bodywork there's a plug-in hybrid drivetrain that utilizes "an optimized" 2.0-liter V6 petrol engine, an electric motor and a 7-speed, dual-clutch electronic gearbox.
According to Citröen, at low speeds the Metropolis runs in Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mode, with its electric motor developing a continuous 55bhp peaking at 95bhp. At highway speeds, the petrol powerplant provides 272bhp and 375Nm of torque.
We don't how Citröen came up with this number, but the French claim that when the car uses both the electric motor and the combustion engine, the combined output is 460bhp and 430Nm of torque.
The Metropolis also benefits from a four-wheel drive mode and a Hydractive suspension.
The four-door sports saloon will be on show for the public in the French Pavilion at the Shanghai World Fair in China from 1st May to 31st October, 2010.

It's... different.
Around the c-pillar area it's basically a Lamborghini Estoque.
Omg...I want one
Nice. Much larger than the present day's largest Citroën.
I love Citroen latest concepts I wish they were sold here in the states. Everyone has been a home run
blimey Citroen!!! That is one long car, the front and back end will be in different time zones
this is what the new Aston Martin Lagonda should look like...
I love it.
....wow. Seriously, I'm struggling for words. It's simply amazing.
Incredible!
Finally. Proof that car makers are still capable of designing something stunning and coherent from all angles. Like it wasn't designed by a committee, or as a response to competition. Looks inspired. Love the luggage compartment shape. I'm starting to show my age, but in the '70s and '80s, car makers debuted even sedans which made you go "wow!" and I think they've lost a lot of that since. Bulbuous fronts (dictated by pedestrian safety laws), high rear ends which require cameras to see out of (dictated by aerodynamics and fuel consumption reduction), it's so difficult to find cars these days that look distinct.
There's a lot to like, here...
This Citroen looks nice and very elegant - it's adeparture from their usual hatchbacks and funky designs - but what really impressed me was the intro video!
The flying lights effect is awesome, along with the music/soundtrack... A great presentation! Very creative!
WOW! What a great car should look like!
Very very nice.
Stunning effort from the Shanghai based design unit.
Would like to see something similar as a future Chrysler 300/Imperial. Impressive!
this car for some reason looks like something infiniti would produce nissan gtr front fenders and infiniti essence gt made into 4 doors with a long wheelbase aka what infiniti should look towards for the a new Q-series i truly like this direction of car design nice citroen
if they made 90%-100% like a concept, they will have 100% success with this car... it's beautiful.
"this is what the new Aston Martin Lagonda should look like..."
I absolutely agree with you... AM Lagonda should have designed this concept... and yes ... it looks (almost) similar to the Lambo Estoque (side to back)...
This car is fit for an emperor... Kudos to Citroen's Shanghai-based design centre for producing this beauty...
"developed by Citröen's Shanghai-based design team."
Chinaman Design?
wow... this thing just illustrates how boring all the 7-series, A8's etc are..
Just like the release of the DS3 instantly made all the MINI's obsolete.
Now just make a smaller C5 like this please.
Not balanced at all. Too much going on in the rear and on the front end. Detail is nice, but rein it in some.
Not balanced at all. Too much going on in the front and rear. Detail is nice, but overdone, and needs to be reined in. Front hood and rear trunk are too long. Nice, but too many issues for me.
I sow Metropolis few days ago & feeling sick ever since!!!!
Je sème la métropole peu de & il y a jours ; se sentir malade depuis ! ! ! !
Damn! now that is how you make a statement. Be a rich fool rockin' up to the club in that! Fuck yeah!
Now that's a head turner. Haters stay curbside you can't jump in this ride.
Hey wait a minute! We got some extra chrome trim laying around...lets extend it way out into the C pillar. Seems like an after thought!
This car is just too awesome for my brain to absorb.
What a way to shut'em up, hopefully Peugeot will follow suit...the the SR1 is a great concept which leads me to hope that Peugeot will follow Citroen with consistency and bravery as well, especially since Giles Vidal has crossed over to Peugeot...I still read a few comments from those who want Citroen to fail...hating on what is a flawless car ..."Lambhorghini Estoque" people don't want to remember that the Peugeot Hymotion4 was a more precise execution of what Lambhorghini attempted with their Estorque...
Absolutely gorgeous!!!
Bring it to USA!!!
Wow. This car is stunning! And it's... French!? The country of "Twingo" and "Clio"!? However, lest we forget, before the socialists made of the once-great-country of France a mediocre shadow of its formers self... France is also the country of the Citroen DS, of high fashion, of La Fayette and of the Statue of Liberty.
Now why can't this car be from an American manufacturer!? This car actually LOOKS American to me. The length of it, the dramatic, confident, aggressive styling, the squared C pillar... it looks like a vertical skyskraper.
Yes, the French have a flair, a talent, a... je ne sais quoi... when it comes to creating beautiful things... but engineering-wise I'm not so sure, I trust Japanese, German and non-union American engineers better. What is crucial is THE ENGINE! Is it a 4 cylinder puff-puff machine, or is it a powerhouse of epic proportions that will make it a credible competitor to the big Germans and now, with that gorgeous XJ, to the big British cars?
It seems that the age of socialist mediocrity is now visiting America, even our cars suck. The Ford Explorer will be a FWD 4 cylinder crossover that will at most "explore" the back of parking lots, while any good-looking American car such as the Chrysler 200C or Buick Regal are actually European cars rebadged (Lancia Delta for Chrysler - it's Fiat, and a German-made Opel Insigna for GM).
Anyways, if the engine is powerful, and Obama's ecofreak CAFE standards don't get in the way... PLEASE BRING THIS CAR TO AMERICA!!!
WELL DONE, FRENCHY FRENCH MAN!
"Yes, the French have a flair, a talent, a... je ne sais quoi... when it comes to creating beautiful things... but engineering-wise I'm not so sure" = blah blah blah ..."France is also the country of the Citroen DS" = ...blah blah blah ....
Peugeot-Citroen are world leaders in Diesel Engine technology, have been colaborating with Ford for years now...and with BMW on 4 Cylinder engines...so your talk about engineering is unfounded and subliminal,...you can only wish the american cars looked like this...academically speaking European cars are way better in all departments...performance without fuel efficiency is almost null and void in our days..I'm yet to see an american built car this side of the planet with a 4 Cylinder Turbo engine...
FUCKING UGLY!!! WAT THA HELL IS WRONG WITH CITROEN!?!?!
Can they not make a DESIRED car right???
this car would have been PERFECT, if ONLY it was about 3/4 the length. so pretty much shorten it by 25% and make it a 2 door (in other words completely cut out the 2 rear doors, and make that the beginning of the rear) and the car would be perfect. tooooooooo long now!!!
Developed by Citroen's SHANGHAI based design team.
