Rhys Millen Wants to Climb Pikes Peak in Under 10 Minutes...With This

|

Rhys Millen will be tackling Pike's Peak in the unbelievably-modified RMR Hyundai Genesis PM580, set to run in the Unlimited Class. According to Hyundai's press release, that mean "anything goes". No rules, no restrictions; just build it however you want to and climb the mountain as quickly as possible.

Millen has created "a modern Le Mans style car", trying to keep the carbon fiber-bodied car's weight around 1,850 pounds. Power will come from a turbo'd Hyundai Lambda V6 that's been stroked to 4.1 liters, routed through a Weismann semi-automatic AWD transmission, and spun through a multi-Quaife differential setup to the 17-inch HRE wheels.

An active center differential "will allow a 10 to 100 percent torque split to the front wheels. This is important because the course changes from asphalt to dirt multiple times and allows the Genesis PM580 to have more than one set up on the 12.42-mile course."

Aerodynamically, the car is enhanced with an active rear wing provided by Aeromotions (the same people behind Switzer's recent R35 monster).

Millen says that according to the targeted weight, output would need to be around 675 horsepower to be competitive. With an engine capable of 750 horsepower (according to testing), he'd better hope those carbon fiber Brembos are good.

Scroll down for the specs so far.

Wow, it looks like a smaller and uglier Toyota GT One, recycled design much...

Agreed...it looks (almost) exactly to the Toyota GT LM racer... Despite that, it looks nice...and yes...Hyundai will need to give this Pikes Peak racer more ground clearance...

waaay more clearance...I don't understand how he can do the Pike with an inch to play with...isn't it uneven dirt road for a large chunk? We'll have to wait and see!

Phil....

Brakes will get you into trouble on the climb. You really don't need a lot of brake and when you do, it needs to applied with finesse and not a sledge hammer.

The climb needs tough drivetrains especially transmissions and clutches, as gears and compression braking are the primary modes of operation.

The climb for the most part is steep, and just backing off the throttle in the right gear is quite effective and leaves you in the right gear to exit corner.
