What's One More? Toyota Announces Voluntary Safety Recall on 1998-2010 Sienna Minivans

|

In what is shaping up to be a huge corporate nightmare, Toyota today announced that it will launch yet another voluntary safety recall, this time involving approximately 600,000 first- and second-generation Sienna 2WD minivans sold in the U.S. to address potential corrosion in the spare tire carrier cable.

The Japanese automaker said that the recall affects certain 1998 through 2010 model year Siennas that have been primarily driven in cold climate areas with high road salt use.

Here's how Toyota describes the problem: "Continued prolonged exposure to road salts may cause excessive corrosion of the carrier cable in some of these vehicles. In the worst case, the carrier cable may fail and the spare tire could become separated from the vehicle, a road hazard for following vehicles that increases the likelihood of a crash."

The company said that it is currently working to develop a remedy for this condition adding that until it finds a solution, owners of the affected Sienna minivans will receive an interim notice instructing them to bring their vehicle to a dealership for a preliminary inspection.

Well, I guess they wanna take it out all in one shot. Unlike, Chrysler which was suppose to die back in the 80s, but now is dying again.

Might as well clear out all the bad blood and start in a clean sheet. If they are really serious about going back to quality/reliability again than 2010 is the year to clean house.

Another cover-up; 12 years in the making.

"Another cover-up; 12 years in the making."?

A corrosion issue, hardly a safety issue. It is common on ALL manufacturers, especially in the snow states.

Jerk.

@Anon#2: Haven't thought of it that way, but it makes a lot of sense. I completely agree with you.

Now for their car designs.... I hope they address them too.

Not unlike Audi (in the past), Toyota will soon excel in auto safety again. A company this large has put safety on the front pages for the ENTIRE industry to address issues throughout. I remember back to the disastrous Ford Pinto and Crown Victoria (more recent), Chevrolet Corvair and Vega - amongst others. It took these U.S. automakers eons to address these deadly concerns, with perhaps the exception of Ford putting bladders around gas tanks of these vehicles (Crown Victoria's/Mercury Grand Marquis' after numerous police officers were killed in CV Interceptors following separate rear end collisions. I wish NO company bad press, but support to address issues ASAP. Anyone laughing at alleged defective vehicles has a screw loose - unlike a car in need of repair. By the way, my cousin was one of the officers killed roadside when his Ford Patrol car was struck from behind. We, as family, welcome the Taurus squad car, believed to a safer alternative.

Annon 9 - and the best example you can think of defective yank cars are those that haven't been built in over last 30 years whereas we have defective cars coming out of toyota now in the present.

Fool.

Anonymous 13 - Toyota isn't the only companies that have recalls right now... Honda, Nissan, GM and Ford have recalls also. You have to read the small articles to find out about those though. Toyota is just easy game right now, so it makes headline news.
