Donahue-Driven Champion AMC Javelin Trans-Am up for Sale for $950,000

|

Found in the Canepa Collection is this 1971 AMC Javelin Trans-Am champion. It's said to be the only car built by Roger Penske Racing in 1971, and the last car driven by Mark Donahue before he retired from Trans-Am.

According to the seller's description, this 1971 car was actually a 1970 racer that was re-bodied as a '71. After a 2nd-place 1970 season, Penske must have thought they already had a good thing in the chassis.

For the 1971 season, the Javelin got wider fenders and a new spoiler in order to help dominate the track.

Fully-restored to its 1971 championship specs, a very clean restoration makes this million-dollar museum piece. Well, actually they're only asking $950,000.

It's a nice car, but no AMC is worth $950k.

I'd have to agree. It's super clean, correct and has a great pedigree but $950 large is over the top.

You don't have any idea on what you are looking at. AMC only started racing in 1968. Years behind other companies who had an unlimited supply of money. A brand new team of nobodies with a very limited budget that finished third overall for the season. They ran a single 4bbl carb when other cars had dual carb set ups. They set a record that is still unbroken today. They finished every race entered. Roger Penski and Mark Donohue took a great thing and made it better. In 1970 the Penski team in a brand new car came in Second in the series overall. In 1971 it was a different story. The AMC Javelin ruled Trans AM racing. This 1971 car won 7 of 10 races. This is one of the finest AMC's on earth. One Million dollars for an AMC? I think cheap! Mike from Ohio!

I AGREE MIKE, YOU CAN FIND BIG 3 RACE CARS FROM ALL SORTS OF MOTOR SPORTS, BUT WHEN AMC, HAD A LIMITED BUGET, ONLY A FEW UNMOLESTED CARS EXSIST. SO $950,000.00 IS ACTULY CHEAP FOR A PIECE OF HISTORY NEVER TO BE SEEN AGAIN, I MEAN THEY ARE STILL RACING FORD, CHEVYS , MOPAR. SO THE CARS THAT SET RECORDS ARE MANY IN THE BIG 3.
