New Alfa Romeo Spider Design Study

|

Here are the names of the three designers behind this Alfa Romeo Spider: Alberto Gaiani, Massimo Paparella and Michela Zedda. They're from the Politecnico di Milano University, and this is the result of a project in conjunction with Alfa.

If ever built, this Spider would likely have an FR layout, a power cloth top, and retain the trademark Alfa nose. From these shots, it looks like a Pontiac Solstice / Saturn Sky from Alfa, a higher-luxury would-be Miata hunter.

Samuel Codegoni, a teacher at the university, explains the design like this: "One of the main ideas that drove this project was to express a sense of tension in action. This decidedly moves away from the first production model takes as a reference: the iconic Duetto of the 1960's - the second reference was the Alfa Spider from the '90s, with its typical wedge-shaped profile."

It seems like Alfa is getting closer and closer to prepping a new, smaller Spyder. Is it too much to hope for something like this in the States?

This looks great.

Looks awfully similar to a combination of the Pontiac Solstice / Saturn Sky. Even the interior has the almost-identical prominent three dials/knobs on the center stack.

The interior is not bad,
while the exterior I think is the wrong kind of sharp surfacing. The flared arches and general hard edges remind me too much of past BMW Z/Roadster concepts...I think the colour choice also doesn't help.

I'm finding it hard to see any brand heritage in this design, nothing reminds me of it being an Alfa.

For once in my life I will say, UGLY to Italian design, looks like a hybrid bmw z mixed with pontiac solstice.

A mix of alfa grille and a solstice... Back to the drawingboard... Alfa has looks... if only the quality could be as good...

Nasty. Alfa's recent design study was draw-droppingly gorgeous. This however, is just jaw -dropping.

If you take away the badge and the triangle below it, you wouldn't have a clue what it is.

2 thumbs down

BMW Z4 much?

Ollie said... »May 20, 2010

God...I cannot start to be-lieve how wrong this is for an Italian design.

I thought the Sky was dead.

Terrible. Looks like a bloody Opel!

I concur with the users here... this design will look more at home with BMW, instead of Alfa Romeo... Imo, AR design language is all about smooth curves with some minimalistic flared edges (e.g. 8C Competitzione). This example simply shouts flame-surfacing!

Nice and controversial try anyway...

Oh one more thing (to the student designers), though the feedback given in this post are negative... it serves as an opportunity for you to improve your designs further, one design case never represents the successful definition of your efforts and it takes tremendous hard work (I know because I have attempted it before) to win people's hearts and minds.

Once you have done that, you are a victor! And never be complacent after your victory.

A true masterpiece. The above comments prove that it will sell. Nothing boring about this sexy roadster. Passion sells and polarizing views guarantee its success in a niche market. Brilliant. Just Brilliant. I will be the very first to flaunt one in Palm Beach and a second in the Hamptons, where I reside. We have Bentleys, including a GTC Speed but something this size makes perfect sense for jaunts along the Atlantic Ocean, Long Island Sound and Gulf of Mexico.

"Passion sells and polarizing views guarantee its success in a niche market"

What polarizing view? Everyone hates it except you.

Maybe you should have a look at some more deserving Alfa concepts to realise how bad this thing really is:

When taking this car out for your 'jaunts' also be ready to take some 'taunts'.
