Volkswagen-Audi-SEAT-Skoda-Porsche: The only group of companies in the world that can get away with the most blatant forms of badge engineering and serving of cold soup.

If, say, Ford and its former subsidiary Mazda had done this (or the Fiat Group), everyone would be yelling and screaming "badge engineering". But now, VW gives us the PREVIOUS generation of the Audi A4, rebadges it and calls it a "SEAT". And still, NONE of the idiots that pass off as "car journalists" and "car reviewers" calls Volkswagen on its shit.

Well, that's usually cause badge engineering usually involves a car from a blue collar brand(say, any Ford product),adding about a couple hundred dollars worth of fluff while adding couple thousands of dollars to the price tag in a desperate attempt to have a more luxurious product(in this example, every single Lincoln made in the past 25 years). On the other hand, making an old Audi into a new SEAT really isn't all that much of a crime really considering SEAT is kind of a budget brand. This has been done for eons now,for example, all Chrysler was,and still kinda is now a days, were Mercedes-Benz's old pieces dressed up in American clothes with prices slashed(SLK became the Crossfire,E-Class became the 300,so on,and so forth).

Totally agree with Anon #2.

Prestige badge to budget badge won't have "the idiots that pass off as "car journalists" and "car reviewers" calling Volkswagen on shit. There ain't shit to be called on!

One question is whether or not it offers real value. The Used Audi versus the New Seat argument. I think it does, and who really cares if it's got four rings or a "s" on the front? (yeah, yeah, I know - lots and lots of people....)

I find no harm for the Exeo being an Audi A4 B7, since all its underpinnings are up-to-date (modern Audi engines-multilink suspension-multitronic CVT as an offer). The trim levels also seem to include a lot of stuff and the price tag is not bad at all.

Its inside VAG competitors - ie the VW Passat & the Skoda Superb Mk2 - are already scheduled to stay in the market, facelifted or not, for many years ahead from the present time, using technologies not so much newer than the Exeo's [Exeo > (Audi A4 B7) 2004 ,
Passat/Superb > 2005].

After all the Exeo is only a 'transitional' model for SEAT which is entering a new segment, and - as many times has been underlined before - its next generation is expected to be a whole new product. This 'launch tactics' has been repeated in the past several times, eg. with the first generation of the Skoda Superb being actually a badge-engineered Chinese VW Passat.

Oh and definitely badge-engineering is not a VAG exclusivity!

And you ignore the blue-collar passat and Jetta vs. the A4 and the Exeo?

Hypocrits.

The Passat and the Jetta have nothing to do in common with the A4 and the Exeo,
they are based on completely different platforms!

The PQ35/PQ46 platforms for the VWs (Jetta/Passat),
and on the other hand the 'premium' PL47 platform for the previous A4 and the Exeo
(add the premium PL48 platform for the current A4).

i agree with the first person VW Audi get away with alot of things that one are total crap that others get called on namely 3 Audi models based on an economy car????? the TT, A1, and A3 now if toyota did this with their corolla and yaris for Lexus, acura for the honda civic and fit, or if Cadillac got a version of its cobalt and aveo everyone would be going crazy but Audi can get away with this for what reason??? Im sorry I cant respect Audi as a luxury brand its just not....

Anonymous said... »May 26, 2010

Everybody has been doing this more or less, Mercedes with Chrysler, Ford with Volvo, Fiat with Lancia, GM with Saab etc etc... And still, NONE of the idiots that pass off as "car experts" and "car fans" has called them on their shit.

Anonymous said... »May 26, 2010

VW Phateton and the Bentley flying spur? Whio are they trying to fool?

Same fucking thing. Same blue collar to white collar bullshit.

Anonymous said... »May 26, 2010

And still, the idiots keep their jaws agape at the... technological marvels that are Audis, VWs, SEATs and their ilk. Get real. They're just badge-engineered tin-boxes.

Anonymous said... »May 26, 2010

While the idiots who buy a crappy Alfa Mito don't know it is a Fiat Punto...
Or shall it be the Lancia Musa for a Fiat Idea?

Get serious, everybody in the automotive world is being doing this for years.

wow! some lengthy and spirited comments above. cool to see how a car i am just learning about is garnering so much buzz. it looks neat. we miss out on many cars in north america, yet the market here is a bit overcrowded and the makes and models in the states represent the best in the world for the most part, in my opinion. still, i thoroughly enjoy the international flare found at carscoop.com. and love gaining knowledge about cars, trucks, suv's and crossovers here and abroad. kudos! just a couple of unrelated questions to the above featured car:

q: is carscoop a website based in the u.s.? if so, what state? if not america, where?

q: why the unscrambling of words (all of a sudden) prior to posts being entered? it is rather time consuming and i do not understand why there is a concern over information that i do not view as confidential and in need of security.

thank you, fellow posters and administration at 'scoop!

We know they've been doing it for decades. It's just that some people belive their favoured brands are above others and therefore their own biases keep them from rationalizing what the brands cars really are.

Mondeo to X-Type, not so good.
A4 to Exeo, Great!

A4 to Exeo, great?

I beg to differ, because I happen to own the previous generation of the Audi A4 and now this brings resale values for my car even lower. I'm not going to buy anything from the VW group again.

A seriously pissed-off Audi A4 owner, like you, my friend.

But should it not have been called the SEAT Exafour?

"Mondeo to X-Type, not so good.
A4 to Exeo, Great!"

I think this refers to the badge engineering debate.

How much of an effect has it had? The general public don't know the Seat is a previous gen Audi and from what I've read and heard it's not a huge drop. But would love to hear from an owner. Have you tried to sell?
