Peugeot Tries to Challenge Golf GTI with New 308 GTi 200HP

|

The GTI badge isn't dead for Peugeot after all. Despite previous reports from certain media outlets in the UK, the French firm has just launched a new 308 GTi sport hatchback model for the European market.

Available exclusively as a 5-door model (at least for the time being), the new 308 GTi gets the same 1.6-liter THP engine with a twin-scroll turbocharger found on other PSA Peugeot and Citroen and MINI products, including Peugeot's own RCZ sports coupe.

It produces an output of 200-horsepower available from 5,500 to 6,800 rpm and a maximum torque of 275 Nm or 202.8 lb-ft between 1,700 and 4,500 rpm. Power is sent to the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox.

Peugeot says that the 308 GTi accelerates from zero to 100km/h (62mph) in 7.7 seconds, while it completes the 1,000m sprint in 27.8 seconds and returns an average fuel consumption of 6.9 lt/100km or 34.1mpg US with 159 g/km of CO2.

The car's chassis has also been adapted to match the characteristics of the engine featuring a new suspension and steering wheel system setup, a 10mm lower ride height and 340 mm diameter brake discs at the front and 290 mm at the rear. The 308 GTi rides on 18-inch alloy wheels shod in 225/40 R18 sport tires.

The styling upgrades over the standard 308 are rather subtle and include a bright black carbon-style insert under the front bumper, a lower front panel derived from the 308 CC, roof spoiler, a rear diffuser finished in Perla Nera black, GTI badges and twin chrome exhaust pipes.

Distinctive interior features include sports seats at the front, aluminum foot rest and gear knob, leather sport steering wheel with a flattened bottom and thumb rests, and piano black fascia trim.

In France, the 308 GTi will be launched on the10th June, with prices starting from €26,900.

Thank God we "screen" what is sold here in the United States. This car looks hideous. The VW Golf GTI is a beauty, and fortunately available in the states.

Doesn´t deserve to be called a "GTI". This thing is so boring!

thank god not all opinions are american otherwise we would all be fat barstewards stuffing ourselves with beef burgers, invading other coutries to steel their oil and pretending to be a world power when china is clearly going to knock you into touch. You see the french have a bit of class, style etc and thank god for that!!!

I don't thank god because there isn't one at all.

Please Peugeot, offer it a new face and the 3008 interior...

I must chuckle at the post bashing America. I travel extensively and have homes in various parts of world and conduct successful businesses throughout the entire world; yet, despite being born outside of the United Stated, I never felt more blessed, safe, surrounded by the kindest people and fortunate enough to say that the good people here respect and welcome wholeheartedly your valued opinion - even if baseless.

Ugly, Bloated and driven by people with no dress sense,

There's only one GTi, and that is a Golf.

I'm an ardent Peugeot-Citroen follower and own one myself, while this for me is a way over-due introduction of the car...the name for me is not spot on, I think Peugeot should only reserved the GTi for the 207 only, the rear roof spoiler should be optional,it doesn't need it (I wouldn't want one) ...interior wise I'd like to think it's better than the Golf GTI, but that's my opinion ...7.7 is really nothing to rave about which is why I think it would generate more noise if was just given another 308 derivative name instead of GTi..they should just leave the sporting to the small cars like the DS3 and 207 ....

At least it looks as happy as the Mazda3. It makes me wonder if French designers have become the new Chinese.

Many here need to drive a new Peugeot because you talk a lot about the brand but you have no clue.

Anonymous said... »May 21, 2010

Maybe just the look of these ugly Peugeots is enough to put anyone off wanting to drive them.

How clever idea this 1.6-turbo unit is! 200bhp from 1.6-litres,that's a triumph of engineering.
So her poor visibility, too steep A-pillars,and not-too-wide back space are regrettable, not only hardly practical but also against Peugeot's traditional conscience about ergonomics!

my golf gti mk.6 is beautiful... this is a peugeot... ahahahahahahah!!!

have we got some worried VW employees blogging here.....I have been told (from an VW source) that they are!

Shame on you VW group getting your people to try and knock the competition.

You should be concentrating on making the TT better so at least it could challenge the RCZ.

As for America, I don't agree fully with any of the comments above, but the first guy is nearest the mark. The americans for example support Israel whilst Israel is making the people of Gaza starve....terrible countries!

Have own/drove several Peugeot cars before(204,504,406,407).....They are great cars and have their own characteristics, typically what french vehicle are famous for(road holding,comfort,design,reliability).....

Never own,never know.....

whereas VW cars, are typically German(Performance, engineering dynamics),it is totally different feeling you will get out of German cars & French cars....

Well,it is depends what you are looking and enjoying for..... ;-)

@sup3rduke: this is sport car. No matter who's manufacturer all of them are based on performance, engineering dynamics... So comments here are expected from poeple who drive 308 gti and golf gti, not the peugeot or vw funs.

Awesome car. Too bad for the Pug-hate. I wonder why when a Pug article is posted, VAG worshippers often swiftly post their hate comments, while the reverse seldom happens. BTW, The GTI was never a VW creation, it was Maserati, which Peugeot once owned.
