Volkswagen proceeded today with the official unveiling of the all-new 2011 Jetta sedan that will go on sale in the U.S. this October with prices starting at $15,995 (about €13,050 at today's exchange rates). European-market availability and pricing will be announced at a later date.
As we pointed out yesterday after the first batch of photos were leaked online, the new Jetta's crispier exterior styling with the Audi-esque rear-end and Scirocco-like fascia was inspired / previewed by the NCC coupe concept car shown at the Detroit Show this past January.
For the first time, the new Jetta will not be sharing any body components with its Golf brethren, though underneath, the two models share most parts as the four-door sedan uses a modified version of the Golf's architecture.
The saloon's dimensions have been re-proportioned compared with those of the concept car and the outgoing Jetta model. The 2011 Jetta measures 182.7 inches (4.64 meters) long, 57.1 inches (1.45 meters) tall and 70.1 inches (1.78 meters) wide, making it 3.54 inches or 90mm longer than the previous model.
In addition, it also boasts a 2.76-in. or 70mm longer wheelbase with obvious benefits for passenger space. According to Volkswagen, legroom is now a 38.1 inches or 967 mm, which represents a gain of 2.6 inches 67 mm over the outgoing Jetta.
Inside, the 2011 Jetta's interior styling is far less refreshing than the exterior. In fact, it's as if [almost] nothing changed over the outgoing model. Even the instrument cluster looks eerily similar as VW did not go for the deeply recessed main dials of the Golf VI opting instead for a more plain looking instrument panel.
In Europe, the new Jetta will eventually be offered with a total of six engines, all turbocharged. The petrol range includes the 105HP 1.2-liter TSI, 122HP 1.4-liter TSI, 160HP 1.4-liter TSI and the 200HP 2.0-liter TSI.
Diesel fans will get two common rail units, a 105HP 1.6-liter TDI and a 140HP 2.0 TDI. Except for the 1.2 TSI, all engines may be paired with either a 6-speed or 7-speed (depending on the model) DSG dual clutch transmission.
The 1.2 TSI petrol and 1.6 TDI diesel are also equipped with the BlueMotion Technology package that includes a Start-Stop system and battery regeneration.
VW claims that the 1.2 TSI BlueMotion Technology model consumes 5.3 lt/100 km (44.3mpg US or 53.3mpg UK)with 123 g/km CO2, while the 1.6 TDI BlueMotion Technology attains a combined fuel consumption of just 4.1 l/100 km (57.3mpg US or 68.9mpg UK) with 109 g/km CO2.
Unfortunately for North American consumers, VW will not offer (or at least not for the time being) the 1.2 TSI and 1.4 TSI petrol units. Instead, U.S. and Canadian buyers will continue to get the same ol' 2.5-liter five-cylinder petrol found on the outgoing model.
Other powerplant options will include a 2.0-liter turbodiesel featuring common rail injection with 236 lbs-ft. of torque (320Nm) that can propel the car from 0 to 60mph in 8.7 seconds, a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated petrol, and from 2011, a range-topping 2.0-liter TSI turbocharged petrol.
All Jetta engines will be equipped with a manual transmission as standard with automatic transmissions offered as an option. On the new 2.0-liter TDI and 2.0-liter TSI, Volkswagen will offer the 6-speed DSG.

It is ugly as hell. Compared to new Focus and new Elantra.
would't change my 2007 1.4 tsi jetta over this one...
Wow ! Below 16k but with this looks ?!
If I'm not a strong Toyota supporter , I would forget all others to buy this ! It have the best looking shape compare with new Ford Focus and new Hyundai Elantra ! I think it's even better looking than current VW Jetta and Honda Civic !
its a mini Audi A5...kinda cool
what a gorgeous vehicle and surprising low price for a sedan that looks like it could be a far costlier audi a4. kudos vw!
I like it! Looks nice and finally not like Golf!
The price may seem low, but you have to factor in all of the repairs that you will probably be making once the warranty has expired. The reliability of these things were not good before, and they have done some cost-cutting on this one. Buyer beware.
Now I see why everybody loves Golf.
Sleek, pretty powerfull, easy to make an u-turn in every town, unlike A5 which can block a street until you can go.
But the automanufacturers still do not get it! The world's car population is increasing not shrinking and the paved roads cannot be built in the air.
Are those Audi tail lights?
Once this Jetta comes out that shoud stop the
comments that the "Suzuki Kizashi looks like a Jetta"!
dis is one handsome lukin ryd........tho d hyundai elantra still looks better!!!!
Would not trade my 2009 2.0 TDI for this one.
How cheap pricetag !! Lucky you american guys.
i'm not sure if styling is crispier. Its too straight forward(the front). You can counter that by saying, whats wrong with straight forward but as it is the Jetta, you know it has some fans, they wouldn't like it.
But car design is as difficult as hell especially nowadays. So its still a non-conclusive issue, this design.
The earlier Jetta was horrible, but this one is just amazing. Finaly we have a realy nice car.
"Suzuki Kizashi looks like a Jetta"! -> That's wrong!
"Suzuki Kizashi looks like a Chevy Cruze"! -> That's almost right!
Oh, my good, how nice have you become, my dear beloved Jetta! But I must tell you, that unfortunately I will not buy you. Even if I would be able to buy you here in europe for the same cheap prize as in the us, I can't, sorry. I also can't buy the nice Cruze, even if it is here as cheap as the new Jetta in the US. But instead of my beloved Bora / Jetta IV I have to switch over now to a Touran, my family requests for more space. But I promise you, I will remove the TOURAN letters on it's back, and replace by "JETTA plus"... hehe...
Looks hot. I hope the states gets the TDI turbo diesel!
the person (above) preferring the vw golf is exactly the point: two very different cars, people, lifestyles. it is all about choice!
Suzuki Kizashi is Suzuki Kizashi, its like nothing else on the the road. Its got best balance of a design, not too simple nor too exotic. And really good performance.
What a good-looking car!
Certainly an improvement on the bulbous current/previous model. Even the new Focus looks a bit flabby compared to this. :)
Looks good!!. Glad they kept a normal beltline and avoided the high beltline and swoopy roofline design so many new cars are getting. Visibility and rear seat headroom are always appreciated.
Yawn.
Sharp-looking car in my opinion, though I can see how the more sophisticated exterior styling might not appeal to younger buyers. I test drove a 2010 TDI model in Nashville last week and was pleasantly surprised by the power and overall ride. My biggest hang up at the moment is so many negative reviews and comments out there about quality, costly repairs and VW's unimpressive warranty.
I like..... Das Auto!
Still boring as hell, but far better than the current feminine corolla knock-off
It looks like VW has lost all of their integrity in their puruit of market share. I test drove a 2011 Jetta last week. I felt like I was driving a 1992 Dodge. How could VW be so far off the mark?
hav neva liked vw designs cos of how dumb n golf they r but i think they ve tried n deserv the benefit of the doubt wit this...cheers volks!!!!
but this is free consultation to vw...imagine if u took off the vw badge @ the front grill and put in letters of ''volkswagen'' in red @ the lower right hand side of the grill, their cars wld look more presentable...lets say the span of it ll cover up to between the last lower 2 slits only...think abt it volks...i gave this consult cos i can now see u r thinkin now...
Looks good!!. Glad they kept a normal beltline and avoided the high beltline and swoopy roofline design so many new cars are getting. Visibility and rear seat headroom are always appreciated.
I had Jetta 1999 A3 Jetta TDI, then I purchased 2003 Station Wagon Jetta TDI (was built in German), now I have a Jetta Sedan 2011 TDI with all the bells and whistles. In terms of quality of materials in the cabin, 2011 is several steps backward compare to previous VW Jetta models. But I didn’t mid it since the new TDI engine and 6-speed transmission are very good.
What I cannot get over it, is the very poor handling of 2011 Jetta simply due to rear torsion beam axle, both rear tires hoop over small bumps, and if you are on a on/off ramp and going over bumps, the back of the car slides. All previous models of Jetta had independent rear suspension, in 2011 VW cheeped out in interior materials and read suspension, and the price didn’t really drop, my 2003 Jetta TDI was fully loaded and I paid $32000 Canadian for it, exactly the same price I paid for 2011 model.
I am very unhappy with my purchase, I do think I would purchase another VW again.
