SAAB 91 Concept Dreamed up by the Brand's Enthusiasts

|

What you see pictured here is a conceptual study for a B-segment SAAB hatchback model named 91 that was created by young Italian designer Fabio Ferrante with the help of an online community called "Saab 91 Petition and Support Group" - or at least that's what we understand.

The Saab enthusiast group, which can be found on Facebook, sprung up before the tie-up between Saab and Spyker N.V. with the goal of developing through an open collaboration similar to the Open Source movement a small hatchback model that could potentially save the company.

That may sound like wishful thinking, but the group is taking the project seriously. In an interview with Virtualcar, Ferrante said the group hopes that the final outcome can inspire the styling and overall character of the small hatch SAAB has reportedly been looking into lately (read more about that in our report here).

The SAAB 91 concept targets the likes of the MINI and the more recent Audi A1, measuring -according to Ferrante - 3,870 mm long, 1,420mm tall and 1,700 mm wide.

"The overall look deliberately avoids any rétro element, adopting the current design language of the brand, inspired by concept cars such as the BioHybrid and Aero X," says Ferrente.

Notable styling features -of the admittedly well executed from a technical standpoint- concept include the classic wraparound windscreen, the pronounced wheel arches and the drooping, teardrop rear window that brings to mind the Hyundai Genesis Coupe.

For the time being, the group has finished the car's exterior styling and will now concentrate on the interior design. Share your thoughts about the SAAB 91 in the comments section below.

WTF? Seriously, I like these concept GCIs and the like, but WTF? Even the homely Saab Sonnet looked better than this.

who need a futuristic Saab ?? Saab has enthusiast because of its classic and unique design and look, so do Mini Cooper, VW's bug etc.

Nice frontend.
But the rearend looks like it whant to be a ugly version of a mitsubishi colt!!!

Take a Mini Cooper and put a Saab fascia on it!!! ;-)

Seriously hot!
But a 9-2 based on a mini or bmw 1-series i more
likely to be produced, and would probably have more of a "drop" shape as the original saab 9-2.

I'm a Saab enthusiast. I appreciate what these people are doing. It's impressive. But PLEASE get rid of the Genesis rear window droop! And keep the headlights more like the 9-x concept please.

Looks like a three way wreck? Saab, Kia Soul, Hyundai Genesis Coupe? Using each, maybe we can call it the Goob? Actually i like it! It's orginal, compact, but sporty. Maybe not for Saab, and their clientele, but maybe another company should persue this and pick it up?

It certainly looks futuristic... and quirky at the same time... I liked it!

It looks like it should be a Hot Wheels car, not a Saab. At least it's not boring.

No-No-No!!!
Design Saab 9-X BioHybrid - respect!!!

Actually very interesting proposition...roofline somewhat to high in a proportion to the body though...

This car looks like it of the off spring of a Hyundai genesis coupe and dodge colt with Saab DNA THROWN IN the mix! I think it looks interesting with the front wheels and Hyundai genesis coupe rear window..I don't think I would buy this car but it sure looks as good or better then the mini does , maybe if the roof line was lower and the car was just a little longer from bumper to bumper it would look sexy like the Hyundai genesis coupe it inspires to be..Wait maybe Saab should strike up a deal with Hyundai to copy the 2012 Hyundai Veloster and make a 91 from that car! I really think both the 2012 Hyundai Veloster and the Saab 91 share a lot in common as far as a targeted audience

if they can match the cheap price of the minis here and the fuel consumption it would sell. If the Pontiac Vibe sold this will be a hit.

Same old SAAB story....

Anonymous said... »July 25, 2010

so beutiful! this would sell in europe!!

Anonymous said... »July 25, 2010

yeah ...
Hyundai Veloster x Genesis Coupe = SAAB 91

I will buy this over a GTI if you can give me RWD.

Beautiful renderings using I assume the latest computer program technology but....Jeeez, that's a hideos bunch of crap adorned with a few Saab styling cues over a bunch of cues from a lot of other cars.
From the beginning Saabs have been original aerodynamic teardrop designs with ideosyncratic features based on some designer's idea of function. This is an assemblage of junk with a couple of Saabish featutes, quite the opposite of the trad Saab idea.
