2012 Chevrolet Sonic: First Photos of the North American Version of the Aveo

|

[Updated] It appears that the wait for Chevrolet's Aveo replacement is almost over as we have the first official photos of the North American-spec model. Confirming previous rumors, General Motors ditched the Aveo moniker in favor of a new name as the small car will be called the Chevrolet Sonic on this side of the Atlantic. The company noted that the model for markets outside the U.S., Canada and Mexico, which was first seen at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, will retain the Aveo name.

"The Sonic represents a new beginning for Chevrolet in the small car segment and so we felt it was time to give it a new name,” said Chris Perry, vice president, Chevrolet U.S. Marketing. “The new car is roomy, stylish and fun to drive, and Sonic is a youthful, energetic name that helps convey what this vehicle is about."

The five door hatchback version pictured here doesn't appear to be any different than the Aveo seen in Paris. We're still short on intel, but we gather it won't be long before General Motors releases full details on the N.A. Sonic, which will be manufactured at the firm's Orion Assembly in Michigan starting from 2011.

GM has not yet shown the sedan version of the Aveo / Sonic, but you can get a sneak peek of the car in these official patent drawings in our previous post.

I like it! Glad they got rid of that funky "Aveo" name

How's that Bob Lutz quote about "angry toasters" go again?

I suppose the Aveo name had too many bad connotations for American motorists.

Though Chevy Sonic isn't as good as Chevy Spark.

How about a Chevy Youshouldaboughtatoyota?

Hey Sonic, don't be shy, show me your damn face, stupid.

"Chevy Youshouldaboughtatoyota"

Come now, not everyone has a death wish and wants to 'deliberately' accelerate their cars in dense traffic.

Chevy can stand on its own but I would have suggested "Chevy Youshouldaboughtahonda". Glad to see the General finally getting with the program. Good show!

This is just a Daewoo isnt it??

@ This is just a Daewoo isnt it??
Not necessarily. Daewoo develops in most line vehicles for Chevrolet, because Daewoo is not sold outside of South Korea, but that's not to say that Chevrolet does not get any strong Korean influences. Of course the Sonic has also global influences from Germany, USA etc., but it was still and mostly constructed in South Korea, because Daewoo was engaged to develop the new global Gamma platform at GM. Apart from this, the development centers of GM (GMNA) in North America have not so much experience with modern and fuel-efficient small cars such as GM development centers in Europe or Asia.

- Yeah right.. the best car maker is producing deliberate acceleration vehicles in dense traffic to increase sales.

"- Yeah right.. the best car maker is producing deliberate acceleration vehicles in dense traffic to increase sales."

Not for sales, but the fact remains they did a very very sloppy job at trying to cover it up and to pretend it never happend.

You do remember the floormats? We're you one that took them out and threw them in the trunk just to be safe? Remember how they lied to us all about how it was a floormat that got stuck onto the gas pedal?

They simply can't be trusted. NO AUTOMAKER can be trusted.

The photo above does contain several differences compared to the car in Paris. The main changes appear to be the rear quarter panel which drops the fuel door, possibly to the other side, and caries the character line from the side all the way through the brow of the taillights, which are also revised. The rear door also shows some revision of the angles of the windows, giving the overall effect a less upright and more aggressive stance.

Very subtle, but nice.

^ It looks the same to me, just at a higher angle. I wager it's the same car, and nobody is seeing what I'm seeing (which is, "nothing new").

wow... chevy needs a better designer for their car bodies. everything new is ugly except the camaro!

Nice integration of finite flow and detail into a cubist regime. Kudos to the designers.

This is going to be a great, little car. It seems Chevy has finally gotten away from it's weak compact car roots, and come up with something that looks good, both inside and out, and will actually be fin to drive, something which sure couldn't be said of the outgoing Aveo. It's rolling off production lines now:
