Nostalgic Styling Take on 2015 Volkswagen Transporter

|

Even though the current day Volkswagen Transporter is a descendant of the famous Beetle-derived Type 2 vans, it has never managed to enjoy the same level of popularity among enthusiasts as its predecessors did. One of the reasons why the past two generations of the Transporter (T4 and T5) never caught on as much as VW would have liked, could be that their styling is completely forgettable.

Eduardo Oliveira, a Brazilian designer who you may remember from the 2012 New Beetle study, has come up with a retro styled proposal to fix this issue for the Transporter's successor. Presented here in a variety of models, the conceptual Transporter is inspired by the famous T1 and T2 VW vans. Granted, the renderings need some polishing up but the idea is there. Hit the break for the full photo gallery.

Nice renditions of the Type 2..just the way I'd picture in my mind of a proper Kombi/Microbus remake. Eduardo Oliveira should work for VWAG...

The quirky design works for me... I like... But the designer should modify the rear lights... otherwise, it is a nice concept...

Very good. This guy has good work, he fuses nostalgia and futuristic very well.

I remember seeing the light blue rendering that is at the bottom of the first picture. It is a modern interpretation of the the Transporter, and not a retro-mobile like the other pictured below it. It could carve out a niche of it's own without having to resort to the retro styling used on the other interpretations, but at the same time, it pays homage to the original.

Awesome! Bring it!

If they really want it to be retro, it will have a pack of rolling papers and a roach clip as standard equipment!

This is what V.W. should build, not the Routon!!!!!

The only reason the origional VW van had more sucess than the newer ones is that it had very little competition. The whole transporter concept is a much less efficent package than the Routan.

The important part is if it has a rear engine or not. Not only does that give almost perfect 50/50 weight distribution for good handling, but it makes for a more compact packaging.

I'm sure the engineers can make the front drive position plenty safe. The vanagon was, so no reason this couldnt be.

Ask any westfalia vanagon owner who buys a 35-40k refurbished vanagon why they think it's worth it. It's simple; Short wheelbase (1 foot longer than a rabbit) makes for a nimble vehicle, but one can still get this vehicle with up to 16 seats. Interior size is larger than the MUCH larger on the outside eurovan.

Also, 4WD on par with the best land rovers or jeeps, make it a very capable vehicle indeed. Also, it's the only vehicle still on the road that not doubles, but quadruples as a daily driver, camper, big family hauler, and hauler of furniture or other big stuff.

Thats camry, RV, minivan and pickup truck abilities in one single vehicle. No other vehicle can match that. None.

Now build it already, and let people buy these vans for the same reasons they were popular in the first place. Versatility in a compact package. Don't forget though, make it affordable. A lux niche vehicle won't work.
