BMW Officially Confirms 2.0-Liter Turbo for Z4 and 5-Series

|

Earlier this week, BMW unveiled its new 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine which will effectively replace the firm's classic, naturally aspirated straight-six. The force-fed four banger made its debut on the X1 compact crossover, but today, the Bavarian automaker officially confirmed that the new engine will be available in other models "such as the BMW Z4 and 5 Series in due course." While BMW did not give out a launch date, expect to see both models towards the end of the year or early 2012, depending on the market.

In the X1 28xDrive, the new turbocharged twin-scroll engine churns out 245hp and 350Nm torque from just 1,250rpm, with BMW claiming that the four-cylinder unit is lighter and more compact than the equivalent six-cylinder engine, while also returning 16 per cent better fuel consumption and lower CO2 emissions.

I know the straight Six purist will cry foul at this new engine even though it is lighter, more compact, more fuel efficient and most importantly a lot more powerful offering 260 lb/ft of torque vs 200 the 6 puts out.

Personally I don't have a problem with this new turbo 4 as long as BMW can make it at least as durable and desirable as the NA inline 6, something which they have not been able to do with turbo 6.

Hopefully this new engine will make the Z4 much more affordable. I'd really like to order one this year
and the 4T may work fine for me.

The question is, which engine will be most reliable after they've done 200000km?

People will complain until they drive one. If it pulls low down anything like my twin power 2.0 diesel it will be a winner. My other car, 325i feels like a slug compared to the diesel.
Lets hope this new motor is smooth like the 6, something that the diesel isn't.

This will be awesome. Hopefully they pull the price down some with an entry model. The Z4 is the best cure around for a mid-life crisis.
