2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 Breaks Cover at the Chicago Auto Show

|

Dodge’s rejuvenation under Fiat's umbrella continues at the Chicago Auto Show with the unveiling of the range-topping Charger SRT8. As with every SRT model, the highlight of the performance orientated version of the Charger is the new 6.4-liter HEMI V8 powerplant producing 465HP and 465 lb-ft (631 Nm) of torque. According to Dodge, the new engine is not only more powerful than the 6.1-liter HEMI unit it replaces, but also more frugal thanks the standard Fuel Saver technology, which cuts off four-cylinders in certain situations in order to improve fuel economy.

The HEMI is coupled to a 5-speed automatic transmission that can also be operated via paddle-shifters – a first for any SRT model.

“We’re continuing the fast-paced rebuilding of Dodge as our performance brand, and the expansion of our SRT product lineup in 2012 is an important part of our rejuvenation”, said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO, Dodge Brand — Chrysler Group LLCs. “The new 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 builds on the iconic four-door fastback coupe design of the all-new Charger and adds a much larger power band across the rpm range, along with intelligent performance attributes and safety and creature comforts for customers who are passionate about performance driving.”

The Charger SRT8 also comes with adaptive damping suspension, which can adapt to specific conditions by monitoring the vehicle speed, steering angle and speed, brake torque, throttle position and lateral acceleration. The refined, fully hydraulic steering system and oversized 4-pot caliper Brembo brakes round up the technical tour de force.

On the outside, the 2012 Charger SRT8 can be recognized due to its exclusive front and rear fascias, complemented by a new rear spoiler, “racetrack” LED tail lamp and split five-spoke, 20-inch lightweight forged and polished aluminum wheels.

Inside, the SRT-exclusive steering wheel with a flattened bottom, carbon and aluminum trim pieces, plus sport seats set this car apart from the standard Charger.

The new Dodge Charger SRT8 will go on sale in the U.S. this fall as a 2012 model.

GT-Rish snout. Still can not get my head around a "four-door" Charger.

Looks too long

Anon #1, that snout is virtually a carbon copy of the Evo X, not the GT-R. Those side notches really destroy the profile.

The new front fascia looks like a giant a-hole. "Hey, let's put a giant engine in something that looks like a turd and sell it. Who cares that it looks like it was designed in 1986, the engine is big!"

Butters want....

That front is eyecatching and also a one look wonder. You look at it and just wonder what the heck it was that passed you. I don't like it much, I think the look would do better if the crosshair grill was color-coded instead of all black.

hideous

The pictures do no justice to this I am sure. The first Charger SRT-8 was iffy looking in pictures but in person was and still is impressive if not intimidating.

I like the new direction Chrysler is taking Dodge. This car is lacking the 6 speed manual it needs to set it apart. Wonder if there will be special edition versions as well.

Saw live shots of a silver version from the Chicago auto show. Looks much better. Black would camouflage the wide snout a bit. Anyway, it sure is "in your face" macho! Can't wait to see it in person to make a final judgement.

Better get it now before all the gas runs out! Or worse prices rise to $20/gal!

That cover photo looks like a stretched GTR . ..

The after market billet grille makers are going to have a ball with that huge hole in the front

The $40000 billet,"poor-man's Mercedes E63AMG"!
As an "AMG for hoi-polloi",she does quite well. Her fuel consumption has some room for improvement,if realized she would become a towering achievement of muscle-car culture.

where's the f'ing 2-door?!?!?!!!!!!

I have to commend Dodge for refreshing and updating the long out of production Oldsmobile Alero. I just wonder why if your going to update an old, dead, turn of the century sedan, you don't start with its much better looking 2 door version? But Dodge dumps the Magnum. More bad decisions.....

Funny how this Chrysler has taken on a very Nissan GTR like persona :-)

Do your homework man.....
The side indentations are tribute to the old Dodge Chargers side profile... you have google .. use it.
As far as the front it is more like the Lancer than the GTR. You all need Glasses,.

Agreed! You are all brain damaged

I hate chrysler to death but this is what i was waiting for finally chrysler accepting the inevitable, either you copy and improve or GTFO of the market, No more gay ass Hemi's I am here in Europe right now and their cars here are 90% diesel and guess what those diesels are from ou Renault/Peugeot on America YES you heard it on Amerian companies cars, chrysler , ford, Gm and even toyota, honda and others do that shit , the cars we get in the US would not last a month ( suspensions ) here in Europe, I am going around the bends at 60 km without the car flipping on its side, The suspensions in America need to GFTO and put a proper euro suspension going around the bend at 90 kmh without flipping over type cars. chrysler is going bankrupt again unless they ditch all their sorry to say lame ass v'8s and start copying more !!!
I commend chrysler for finally getting off their ass and stop making lazy ass models ( cookie cutter designs). The minivan design needs to go looks a breadbox, aka nissan and honda style needed. I tested a honda odissey there and put the thing at 220 kmh no shaking on highway, not the same with the chrysler at 130 kmh started to get noisy and too much rattling, they cost more than the honda how on earth is chrysler still putting out this crap.

Bye and again my hat off to chrysler for finaly copying the other guys at least it's a good thing
VVT hahahah Honda and Nissan terms now on the pentastar.
